[VFB] Nahhh, this was just great... not!!!

2010-04-15 Thread Niclas Runarsson
Yesterday morning a volcano by the glacier Eyjafjallajökull said 'rise and
shine, let's have a blast'... and started to have a blast.

I booked myself a flight ticket to Finland day before yesterday... invited
to tie at Finnish FlyFair 2010, next weekend. Today I read that as of
tonight Swedish air space is closed... just like in UK, Belgium, Ireland,
Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, parts of Germany and western, northern and
middle of Finland. The volcano continues to spew out ash and the cloud is
spreading out over northern Europe and volcanic expert Reynir
Bödvardsson at Uppsala university says: "It can stop in a few days, but it's
just as probable that it can go on for weeks or even months."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8622978.stm

"'It is likely that the production of ash will continue at a comparable
level for some days or weeks. But where it disrupts travel, that depends on
the weather', Einar Kjartansson, a geophysicist at the Icelandic
Meteorological Office, told the Associated Press."

Videos at YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=icelandic+volcano+14+april

So, we'll just see if Finland will see my pretty face this year too.
Situation now: Nothing takes off from here... and nothing lands over there.

[VFB] Blue Gill Fly

2010-04-15 Thread Everett Hall

Spending the three days at the Sow Bug this year was truly an uplifting
experience. If you have never attended the Sow Bug you owe it to your self to
get to Mountain Home and see just how much you can learn about fishing and fly
tying. I had a lady sit at my
tying position the first day and she was very interested in my Blue Gill fly
that I was tying. After giving her a couple of the flies she said may I show
you a fly we fish her in Arkansas for blue gills. She did just that and I must
say she knew what she was doing. Well to make a long story short, I brought
that fly home with me back to Ohio. Well my friends I went fishing at my
favorite golf course pond today and took along that same fly that the lady gave
me. I was at least smart enough to have tied several of them so I would not
loose the one and only. On the very first cast I caught a hand sized slab
bluegill that I couldn't even reach around to hold him while I took out the
hook. About nine inches long!! Missed one on the next cast and caught another
on the third cast. I was about ready to fly to Mountain Home and thank the
lady. I caught several more and put them all back to catch again soon. I just
thought the list needed a fish story for a change. I can post the pattern if
someone would like it.

Or maybe it was like someone at Sowbug told us (was it Terry?) - my

Arkansas Pattern for Blue Gill fly:

# 8 hook  dry or
wet   Gills don’t care.

Body : black chinelle
medium.

Rubber leg material.

Black waterproof pen.

After making the body take six pieces of rubber leg material
still together

as you received them from the package.  Not separated.  Cut “legs”  long

enough to extend past the bend of the hook from the eye of
the hook folded.

Take pen and make several(6 or 7) marks across the
“legs”.  Let dry.

Fold the “legs” and pinch at the bend and tie to the hook at
the eye.

Several turns.  Whip
finish. Pull on “legs” and they will separate.

GO FISHING!!
Hope this isn’t too confusing.

If you mean just the fuzzies, the answer is yes. It does OK, but furs get a

Subject: [VFB] Question for Don O???

Don O... Have you ever taken marabou feathers (JUST the fuzzy part) clipped
them all off the stems, mixed them up, then used to to rope dub a fly??? If so,
did it work well??? I'm asking this ON list cause I thought somebody else may
have had the same or similar question. Thanks, Chuck

Re: [VFB] Picture and Pattern

2010-04-15 Thread Chuck Alexander
I can't wait to tie and try some of these. In Hot Pink of course LOL...But I
think any color will work in the right day.. I know bluegills are a sucker for
anything with rubber legs. Thanks for sharing. Chuck

Arkansas Pattern for Blue Gill fly:

  # 8 hook dry or wet Gills don’t care.

  Body : black chinelle medium.

  Rubber leg material.

  Black waterproof pen.

After making the body take six pieces of rubber leg material still together

as you received them from the package. Not separated. Cut “legs” long

enough to extend past the bend of the hook from the eye of the hook folded.

Take pen and make several(6 or 7) marks across the “legs”. Let dry.

Fold the “legs” and pinch at the bend and tie to the hook at the eye.

Several turns. Whip finish. Pull on “legs” and they will separate.

GO FISHING!! Hope this isn’t too confusing.

  Chuck,
If you mean just the fuzzies, the answer is yes. It does OK, but furs get a
better result. The marabou tips, on the other hand, make great fly bodies
rope-dubbed.
