Tom: here's a photo of that vise. I think I paid $39.95 for it. Don't waste
your money. It IS a rotary, but VERY cheaply machined. It rusted from just the
humidity in the house, and also the "pad" as you can see, that goes on the
adjustment screw to make it not bore into the table came off the first few
days. I'd rather have a $20 Thompson any day, rotary or not. HTH, Chuck

Folks: It's the dog days of Summer, and that means (at least around here)
that the snakes are crawling, and are meaner than ever. Yesterday, my son and

part off an old Ford we have parked there when they saw a huge rattler gliding
across the yard. They ran up and got me, and wouldn't ya know it but the firing
pin on my shotgun is broken, so I get my 22 magnum pistol and go out there. I
spot him, and you know how ppl are about telling you the size of snakes. It's
like telling you the size of the "fish that got away". But this was one of the
Eastern Diamondbacks you see on the TV shows, as in over 5ft long, and bigger
than my forearm. But the weird thing is, even after I shot (and missed 3 out of
5 times, cause it's hard to hit a snake with an old revolver at 15 yards, cause
that was as close as I was getting LOL). Anyway, through all that, he NEVER
ratted a single time. I shot and missed. I shot again and hit him. He stopped
dead in his tracks and I thought I had heart shot him, cause I knew it was a
"body shot". I shot again, and hit him again. (reason I know is cause after he
had gone, I saw the blood stains on the ground) He still didn't move. His tail
was straight up, and he had 7 or 8 rattles, each at least 3/4" across, but like
I said, they NEVER once rattled. I missed him three more times, and had one
round mis fire before he FINALLY started crawling off VERY SLOWLY. My son in
law had heard the shots and came down with his shotgun, and we went out into
the woods and hunted the snake for 30 minutes or so, but never saw him again.
Man, that really scared me knowing how close he was to my son and grand
daughter. He was a BEAUTIFUL snake as he had JUST shed his skin and his colors
and markings were really bright. But he'll be "dead and beautiful" if I see him
again and hopefully get more shots at him LOL. Anyway, if you live anywhere
that is snake country, this is a bad time of the year, so be on the lookout at
all times. Chuck

2012-08-11 Thread Chuck Alexander
Folks: What is your favorite way to finish off a popper (the tail etc I mean)??
For example, I normally tie in a marabou tail, put a few strands of flashabou

point of the tail.. But I have a lot of poppers that I have completed the heads
on, and need some new ideas on how to finish them . Thanks, Chuck

Chuck,

There are a few jigs tied with Awesome Hair in the photo (attached), to
the

right side. This is a group I tied for Skip Nance to give him an idea of
how to adapt many different materials to both the jig and rope-dub
technique. The segmented bodies come out really grubby looking, like
molded

jigs, but are very durable, shiny, and are easily rope-hackled if that is
being effective.

I have tied minnow patterns down to about 3/4" long, with just one small
clump of AH combed and tapered, with a marker color on top. Glue and pinch
eyes to the front just like normal AH Minnows. Jig-head AH minnows should
also be very effective.

Tom: I'll have to check, cause it's been so long since I bought a vise. i THINK
it is a "Peak" knock off" but will have to go back to my ebay auctions and
see, cause I have several vises now. The vise I use every day is a Dan Vise and

across the yard.
Anyway, if you live anywhere
that is snake country, this is a bad time of the year, so be on the lookout at
all times. Chuck

Re: [VFB] Attn. Don O.......

2012-08-11 Thread Chuck Alexander
WHOA!. That is a lotta different jigs. Bluegills, crappie and bass
here would tear those things up. My only problem with jigs, and I hate to
admit this after all these years is that all but the tiniest headed jigs are
hard for me to cast very far, unless I use my big 'ol 8wt bass road.
Specially the ones with the spinner blades cause of the wind resistance I
guess. But they are killer flies when I use the ones I can cast (1/8th
ounce and smaller on my 4 and 5wt rods). I gotta try to tie some of these.

I'll have to break out the 'ol rope dub DVD for a refresher course, but I
have been needing to do that anyway. On the real small awesome hair minnow
patterns, is the body glued in any way to hold the shape?? Or just combed
out and fished "as is"?? Thanks a lot. Chuck

Folks: I was watching the eight woman canoeing the other night, and if I had

Birdie: That's about the way it was with us as well, cause I have a Daisy BB

HAHAHA sounds like you need glasses or shooting lessons Chuck.
If we ever get rattlers over here in England I'll give Jimmy or Dono a call.
My mate is the same, he has a rat problem, they keep getting up on his bird
table so he bought an air rifle to deal with them, reckons he has had about 40
shots and not killed any although a pellet did ricochet off a metal garden
chair and nearly hit his wife in the head so he is getting closer to hitting
something.

Made my day reading your story.

Subject: [VFB] HUGE Rattler

Folks: It's the dog days of Summer, and that means (at least around here)
that the snakes are crawling, and are meaner than ever. Yesterday, my son and
grand daughter were walking to the edge of of or property to check on getting a
part off an old Ford we have parked there when they saw a huge rattler gliding
across the yard.
Anyway, if you live anywhere
that is snake country, this is a bad time of the year, so be on the lookout at
all times. Chuck

One (craftfur) is just like fur (obviously) while awesome hair is more of a

That would probably work great. When I was stationed in the FL panhandle, we
used to "rake up" oysters off the bottom of the bays with that setup, so if
those tines will grab little oysters, it should grab a fly rod easily LOL..Chuck

Drill a hole in the end of the garden rake handle so that you can tie a
length of rope to it, then go back and use it as a grapling hook..try it and
see if you like it. You may have to weight the rake a bit by tying on a piece
of rebar. Good luck. I'd not give up for sure. Joyce

I second the drag a hook suggestion. As a child, I and my sisters would
look for fishermen who got mad and threw their rods and reels into the
lake. Often there was a bobber attached. We'd wait until they were gone,

and then, without my mother's knowledge (none of us could swim) would
throw a rock out near the bobber and Shep, the faithful dog, would run out
to where the splash was, grab the bobber, and drag the line to shore. By
careful pulling we could get the rod and reel close enough that we could
wade out and get the pole. Of course, there was always the danger that the
dog would get hooked, but we were lucky and he didn't. We quickly learned

that a garden rake was the ideal gadget to "fish" for the rod and bring it
up. You may want to go back with a long handled garden rake and see if
you can't retrieve your lost rod. Just a suggestion. Joyce

towards shore and saw one sticking straight up. Went back and got it but
was really BUMMED. The one I lost was a Cortland Black
Diamond 9ft. 5wt. And a Scientific Anglers reel.

After getting my mind cleared I managed to get 4 small mouthed bass on a

Tried getting down with a sink tip and a wooly worm, but no luck.
Stuck with what was working and got two on two casts.

The water was like glass after the storm blew over.

I've got to find a way to secure fly rods so I don't loose any more.

After a couple of hours the fish stopped biting and we moved back to the first
spot. You guessed it, one of the fisherman on the boat hooked into something.
It was the rod that was dropped overboard. That is one in a lifetime chance.

Of course..we just were careful to dry off when we got wet so mother didn't
know. I asked her once, when I was older, and she said that she knew and did a
lot of praying for us, constant warnings, but knew we would play by the lake
(in our back yard about 10 rods from the  house).  I had the ideal childhood, a
horse to ride and a lake to fish as soon as I got my chores done. Joyce

I second the drag a hook suggestion.  As a child, I and my sisters would look
for fishermen who got mad and threw their rods and reels into the lake.  Often
there was a bobber attached. We'd wait until they were gone, and then, without
my mother's knowledge (none of us could swim) would throw a rock out near the
bobber and Shep, the faithful dog, would run out to where the splash was, grab
the bobber, and drag the line to shore. By careful pulling we could get the rod
and reel close enough that we could wade out and get the pole. Of course, there
was always the danger that the dog would get hooked, but we were lucky and he
didn't. We quickly learned that a garden rake was the ideal gadget to "fish"
for the rod and bring it up.  You may want to go back with a long handled
garden rake and see if you can't retrieve your lost rod.  Just a suggestion.
