Independent Online Facebook page Sometimes a criminal dies doing something so ridiculous that you can't help but chuckle a bit, despite the fact that a death is involved. When someone is hoist by their own petard we can take some satisfaction in the fact that the buffoon may no longer be able to breed, hence the popularity of the Darwin Awards. However, when somebody removes himself from the gene pool and in the process tangentially aids other people in breeding through their crime, well, that takes it to a whole new level. Take the case of one German man and his buddies. They thought a vending machine would make for an easy target for some quick easy coin and attempted to rob it. Not by prying it open with a crowbar or by picking the lock or anything like that. No, these fellas decided to blow the machine up with explosives. The explosion was successful -- a little too successful in fact. The man, who has not yet been identified, so we'll just call him the Prophylactic Pilferer, or PP for short, was struck by a piece of shrapnel from the explosion. The shrapnel, most likely from the machine itself and not one of the prophylactics, hit him in the head, ending his life of very low end crime. His buddies took him to the hospital and spun a yarn about him falling down the stairs to explain the head wound. The hospital staff didn't buy it, because they can tell the difference between somebody's head being damaged on a floor or by a piece of flying metal. The crime raises a few questions, like how much money could there really be in a condom dispenser to risk an explosion? If these kerls could afford explosives, why did they need a few Euros from a vending machine? And, perhaps most importantly, why weren't they practicing safe theft? [VFB] Prayer Request
To all who know us I request prayers for our family and friends locally. On Friday morning at 0930 Wilma Berry passed from our presence to a place without pain, suffering and a sound mind. The last year has been a test of patience and disappointment in hoping she would improve to a better state. Wilma is the mother of my Bride Theresa. The family is in Odessa Texas making the plans for her funeral and celebration of her life and the lives she has touched with her presence. [VFB] RIP OFF AT THE PUMPS
Good email and better advice. Got this from a email friend today she saysI ALWAYS check the first gallon before pumping more – simply to MATCH the PRICE (advertised) against the ONE gallon pumped into my car. – I “caught” a SHELL station (here in Mesa , Arizona) that had the price 12 cents per gallon HIGHER than the advertised price on the pump AND the sign out front. – I called the local Department of Agriculture (weights and measures division) from my cell phone immediately – waiting for them to show up. They did, some 20 minutes later. The Department taped all the pumps – stopping ALL traffic from using the pumps. They (two men) checked all 6 pumps, finding them all “rigged” at a higher price (by 12 cents) per gallon than advertised. PS – That particular SHELL station was being operated by 2 men from India. WOW! Somehow I believe this. SHOULD NOT DELETE WITHOUT READING! This is especially prevalent at places owned by foreign born entities. In some case, they even have counterfeit Department of Agriculture stickers to put on the pumps when they re-calibrate. The State seldom physically inspects the pumps as it is very labor intensive, so it often goes overlooked for months or years. I usually buy all my gas at Sam's Club, but always get receipts wherever I have to get fuel. Often, I will pump exactly ONE GALLON and check the pump pricing before continuing the fill up, and even then, I am aware of how much fuel I should get within a couple of tenths of a gallon from experience. This is true. It happened to them three weeks ago somewhere in Pomona on our way to Penchant. The pump should have totaled @ $68.00 (and change). When the receipt was printed, and she checked it was $77.00 (and change). She got mad, went inside the store, asked for a calculator and let them do the math. They refunded her, she told them that if they cheat, they had better make it right. Normally, her husband would skip printing the receipt. Not her. We saw on the news the other night that this is happening everywhere. Brian pumped exactly one gallon of gas. The price did not match the cost of one gallon. It was higher. He went inside and complained, got a refund. There is also a number on each pump that you can call and complain. This is a true story, so read it carefully. I stopped at a BP gas station in GA. My truck's gas gauge was on 1/4 of a tank. I use the mid-grade, which was priced at $3.71 per gallon. When my tank is at this point, it takes somewhere around 14 gallons to fill When the pump showed 14 gallons had been pumped, I began to slow it down. Then, to my surprise, it went to 15, then 16. I even looked under my truck to see if it was being spilled. It was not. Then it showed 17 gallons on the pump. It stopped at 18 gallons. This was very strange to me, since my truck has only an 18 gallon tank. I went on my way a little confused, then on the evening news I heard a report that 1 out of 4 gas stations had calibrated their pumps to show more gas had been pumped than a person actually got. Here is how to check a pump to see if you are getting the right amount: Whichever grade you are using, put EXACTLY 1 (one) GALLON in your tank, then look at the dollar amount. If the dollar amount is not EXACTLY the price of the fuel PRICE ADVERTISED, then the pumps are rigged. In my case, as I said, the mid-grade was $3.71 per gallon; my dollar amount or 1 gallons should have been $3.71. I wish I had checked the pump. It doesn't matter where you pump gas, please check the 1 gallon price. If you do find a station that is cheating,contact the state Agriculture Department, and direct your comments to the Commissioner, the info is on the gas pumps. Please don't delete this until you have sent it to all people in your address book. We need to put a stop to this outrageous cheating of customers. [VFB] A thought for you...Jimi
For those who have had the honor of experiencing the presence of a warrior from our previous wars and conflicts, and of special praise to the family of those who have one as a relative, I salute you. For today is a day to honor those that came before us, and have paid a price none of us could, or have, experienced. It is our duty to remember them in a solemn and sincere way, with utmost respect. One of the finest ways I can think of is to visit the family of those who have fallen, Absolutely do not thank them for their loss, Rather offer your condolences, even if it is a wife of a fallen WWII soldier. Even though it has been over 70 years, they still feel and know the loss, as do their children and grandchildren. All deserve honor and respect. Show it. For those who have served since 9/11 never forget that most have left someone behind to continue serving in their steed. Don't ask them what happened, just acknowledge the fact that they carry hidden tears for someone who watched their back when it counted. Please, don't forget them. Myself, I will spend the day with my Dad, yes, he crossed over in 1977, but he is always with me. He proudly served during WWII, and quietly went after insisting that I not cancel and appointment for my flying instruction. He loved to fly, he was 12th Air Force. He lost many friends, one of which saved his life, even though he was dead at the time, a story for another time. I will be praying for the decedents of those he lost, and pray they carried their legacy with pride and honor. I will not have a party, and I will not BBQ and have a few beers on this day. I will respect this day as it was meant. That notwithstanding, there are still tens of millions of genuine American Patriots who will set aside the last Monday in May to honor all those fallen Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen who have refreshed the Tree of Liberty with their blood, indeed with their lives, so that we might remain the proud and free. Yes Chuck, clean off the old fiberglass, a lot of times you can just peal it up when you get ti started. Use a disk sander rather than a grinder, the grinder is to rough and thins the metal before you know it. As to the stress point, yes 2 patches cut and drill together so as to match the drill holes, then use one to match drill along the crack with JB slathered on the insides of the patches and both sides of the hull and riveted works fine. Example; if your crack is 3 long, cut your patches 3x5, one inch over the crack with 1 inch apron and a 1 inch apron on each end should not leak again and will dissipate the stresses of stepping on it repeated. Is that as clear as mud? Morning Chuck, and all. Big tip, never use auto store or auto anything fiberglass and resin to try to fix an aluminum boat. Common mistake and recommended all the time, but you see the results yourself. For patching any seam leakage or holes up to 1/2 buy the JB weld in a set. It has parts A and B, mix equal amounts by eye, (not absolutely critical to have exactly 50 50 mix). You can get it at any auto parts store, note, don't get the small 1 oz tube kit, get the professional 5 oz kit. As long as it is closed it lasts for years, (I have some over 30 years old that works perfectly. Nor the repair. sand the area to be patch with fine sandpaper or emery cloth, both sides, (in and outside). Us acetone to clean the area in and out. Use the ice lolly stick you used to mix it with to place a blob on the hole. If it is small, (pin hole to about 16th inch no real backing is needed), press the blob a bit till it oozes thru. Take another small blob and put on the other side from where you started. Take a stip of clear packing tape and place it centered over the patch and gently press so the JB spreads out a bit and then smooth to a genital 1/16 to 1/8th high in the center out patch. Repeat on the other side. Let cure overnight and go fishing. Now, for holes 1/8 and larger, same process, (sand clean etc.), but we add something, your pop can. Take the empty pop can you have been enjoying while cleaning the area and snip it open with your scissors, (note, using the same scissors you normally use for trimming hackle is not recommended, it will give your Royal Coachman a bad hair day...). Trim the aluminum from the can to a patch that will overlap the hole by a minimum of 4 times the hole size for holes up to half inch. Over that have the overlap about 3/8ths to half inch all the way around. Note, the inside of the can is coated so you need to sand and clean it with acetone till it is bright aluminum and you and see the sanding marks in it. Again, mix your JB and coat the hull and the patch and place. Press it into place and tape as before, repeat with a second patch on the inside, or outside if you started on the inside. If you put enough JB on the inside it should spread around the edges enough to make a nice clean patch suitable for bare feet. Now, the big question, did all that make sense? But, that regular fiberglass resin, the type that is clear, when you walk through the boat, as in getting in or out of the boat, that stuff cracks pretty easily. They make a “Bondo” type fiberglass that is an opaque and green in color. Does anybody here know if that “Bondo type” does a better job on things like this than the traditional clear resin, used WITH fiberglass cloth as well. I will also use the cloth with the Bondo type if that is what I end up going with. And help though, no matter what it is, as far as fixing cracks, or pinholes in the bottom of an aluminum jon boat would be greatly appreciated, cause I sit up front, and run that foot controlled trolling motor, while my wife had a regular trolling motor with her, and so when we are ready to go a cpl MILES to the end of the other end of the lake, or if it comes up a thunderstorm, we crank BOTH trolling motors up on HIGH and a Half LOL, and high tail it to the boat ramp. Thanks a lot. I wish I still had my welding torches and tanks. I would just get aluminum brazing rods and braze the cracks and holes. Cast to a few more rises that yielded another two more Rainbows in the 14 class. In a sloppy cast I hit the dock rail that broke off my fly. It was the only one I had like it. I tied on another soft hackle with a Peacock Herl body. No takes and then tried another with still no takes. These two were sz 14 flies. I guess they wanted the smaller flies. By this time my legs and back had given out so I decided to call it quits. I had been on the dock almost an hour. As I was leaving I heard a big splash. Waited a bit and watched the area where I heard the splash. Sure enough It came up again clean out of the water. This trout had to be at least a three pound fish. What a thrill to see a Trout that big come full body out of the water. It cleared the water by several inches. I did not know what it was taking ,I could not see any bugs on the surface. Don O, What I think would be interesting is a side by side video with the same exact fly start at the same time and show the difference in speed as well as effect. Say a Hairs ear or black gnat. It would show the segmenting of the body on both a nymph and a dry. I think it would be fascinating to show just how realistic of an imitating nature with man made skill can look so lifelike. Just a thought, if you and understand what I just wrote. [VFB] Update on my Shoulder for those interested
Had an appointment with the VA in ABQ yesterday, 6 days after the surgery to see how things were going and get stitches out. I swear, one of those stitches on the back over the Deltoid felt like it ran all the way down to my left great toe. Doc Lesko was more than pleased with my progress. His intention was to evaluate and schedule me for physical therapy after examination. Mind you I set up my own therapy to keep the mussel structure from getting stiff and work it a bit since there were no clear instructions other than to keep it moving and only sling it when necessary to alleviate pain. Doc Lesko was impressed that my passive range of motion was nearly 100% and my active ROM was about 60%, (50% greater than expected). He ask about my régime and workout times and how I came up with the ideas for it. Told him went back to my Books and did some research on mussel movement and uses and worked from there. He said he would see me back in 4 weeks and was not going to waste my time with scheduling a therapist since I was 3 weeks ahead of where I was expected to be in passive and active range of motion. Did want me to refrain from any lifting or stress workouts using the biceps for fear of damaging the tendon attachment to the soft tissue after being snipped. Guess having all those books over the years and the varied interest I have help paid off in time and recovery. Never said I had a limited interest in subjects, but being a Jack of All Trades paid off I think. Still have discomfort and it hurts after hauling hay or feed, but life goes on. [VFB] Docs and Surgery
Well, had my shoulder work done in ABQ at the VA. Part of it was taking about 1/2 off of my right clavicle at the AC joint. They found a couple things not planned but fixed them since they were in there. List of procedures follows, with the exception of 2 I have to get clarified. Subacromial Decompression Distal Clavicle Excision Bicep Tenotomy And some procedures in my rotator cuff. Right now I have an elbow and hand but moving the shoulder draws excruciating responses. Finding a way to sleep is an excursion into pain and frustration. Should be gaining range of motion as the days go on and healing starts. Obviously will not do and rifle range work for a bit, especially High Power. A few extra prayers would be appreciated for a rapid recovery. Thanks, because a few ask how it went. [VFB] Update on Amanda
Well according to Amanda about her surgery Friday, It went well, Eh, I'm really sleepy and a little nauseous. Sore as all Get out but good. They got everything out and it looks clear I think. I have another appointment to go over the lab results in a couple of weeks. I had one incision in my belly button, another lower and they went in where I had the appendix surgery long ago.. Those are quotes from text messages from her over the last 3 days. Her mom and I are finally breathing normal, (have been holding our breath off and on since thanksgiving), because she said that apparently she is cancer free now. However, we still have to wait for the labs and then we have a couple more questions for her. I have 2 days at the VA this week for my surgical procedures so Theresa and I will hold back anything we can after that so we can try to keep a reserve ready in case we have to make a flying trip down to see her. Theresa and myself, on behalf of Amanda and ourselves want to thank everyone for the prayers for her. God has worked through experienced hands and the initial prognosis at this time is good. We will endeavor to keep everyone posted on her progress, and again, thank you everyone for your prayers and other help through this time. Sorry folks I have not updated everyone on Amanda, Things have been Interesting around here to say the least. She refuses to, and demands that everyone that talks to her not us the C, (Cancer), word at all in addressing her. She refuses to talk to us at all about it. Her comment is, I'm Fine, don't bully me. She has said that she will refuse the Chemical, Cut and Burn approach to it. Dad has started a never ending search for information, and alternatives. Thanks to those that gave me input and links to information. The hard part will be presenting any information to Amanda, and getting here to at least look at it and consider it. For me, many late nights and early mornings spent researching and downloading information, reading it, and printing a bunch of it out to put into note books so I am not tied to the computer all the time and I can go out to the medicine wheel garden we are making for quiet and solitude. Best I can do now. Theresa was heading down there to see her yesterday, but got shut down and turned back because Amanda said she did not have time to talk to her mom, or me right now. She says she is busy studying for the MCAT test and doesn't have time for US right now. Theresa was heeding down there today and again, curt, don't bother me texts turned her around again. She has Promised to come down Thursday and go back Sunday, so we put some money in her account for her travel. One thing that really has us concerned is that She doesn't like to drive or make road trips anymore, For anyone that knows her, she used to love to travel, there was no distance to far for her and her friends to go. This is beyond a 180, it is totally out of character for her and has her mom and me not only concerned, but incredibly worried. We do know that she had to get All New Clothes, she went from a size 5/6 to a 1/0 between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Needless to say, that was a shock to us at Christmas, so she had to tell us a bit, There is a possibility was all she would say. I am going to turn it over to Theresa and let her fill you in on what she knows. She tells me, but for some reason I am having a hard time comprehending what has happened, and the only way I adjust to it is to find something to try and keep my hands and mind busy. Theresa cries a lot, I tend to hold it in until I cant anymore and have to go to the north side of the property so I can ell a bit and cry it out. A dad should never have the opportunity to outlive his daughter. I haven't given up, but it is hard for me when I don't have answers to needed questions. Here is Theresa, I need to take a brake for a bit. BTW, I can not tell you all how much your prayers and well wishes are felt and appreciated. jimi has covered much of it.she and I were texting pretty heavy yesterday-I got a little irritated at her and kind of cornered her somewhat. She says mom it's not as bad as everyone thinks.the docs aren't concerned about the spots on the liver and the brain.I am going to have surgery and I will let you know when I am going to the doc next.Of course I was caught off guard with this and I didn't ask her what the surgery was going to be on. so we continued texting and all and I I said Amanda can you put me on your hippa so I will no what's going onshe in no uncertain terms said she doesn't want me on itok..What am I to think? [VFB] Sometimes being a dad really sucks, a personal note, please read, Jimi
As some may have noted over the last while I have been a bit distant on my daily flooding of you with my e-mails and political views. There is a reason. As some of you may know, most don't, since about last June our daughter Amanda has had some medical problems with her female parts. During Christmas brake she alluded to the fact she may have cancer. That caused her mom and me to push for answers to many questions, and meet a stone wall of non answers. The more questions we ask, the less contact and answers we got. Last night we were hit with a bomb shell. Having not heard from Amanda in a couple of days, after many attempts, Theresa called a couple of her room mates at school, got no answers but left messages. One called her back fairly late. It appears that her friends and room mates thought Theresa and I were some kind of Monsters because we were not there for Amanda. It appears that Amanda found out last July that she had Ovarian Cancer, and it has now moved to her liver, and with all appearances, her brain. She lever told us about the first part, let alone the progression, and we don't know why. Needless to say, Theresa and I are at a loss of understanding, and have more questions than answers now as to why she never told us anything. Amanda does not know that we now know what is going on. Her roommate invited Theresa down to stay in her room and talk to Amanda with support from her friends. Spring break starts Friday and we are going to start today to try to get the funds together so she can go. If you would, please pray that we can get answers andwill know what to do and what to say. To say that we are at a loss of understanding would be an understatement. I thought I should let you know because many of you know and love our daughter and should know what is going on. 'Juice bugs' are just a style of fly that I've tied for 30 years, starting with Swannundaze. With new materials came new applications- Vinyl, Sof-tex, Jelly-rope, etc., Now UV as the latest improvement. The goal is to make a bug that looks 'juicy', that is, it looks like you can just 'squish it' and the juice will get all over your fingers. If you have some old Swannundaze, you could use that, or clear D-rib, or clear Larva-lace, or... I've even used strips of heavy mono to make a clear shell, and surgical tubing for salt shrimp. The one goal of any effort would be to create transparency. I don't like epoxy because of the smell and weight and yellowing and the time to dry (drying wheels) and the mess and fuss with mixing, the waste, and... On the simple side, just a scud rope-dubbed with reflective or synthetic dubbing, segmented, with a good coat of UV on the top side will make a juice-bug. Let it cure and pick out some legs and you'll have a scud like a lot of them look in my box, because that's just what I did. A 30-second fly to tie and doing a group with the UV doesn't take long. A second coat of UV and the results are amazing. A bare hook wrapped with pearl strip and then jelly-roped on the top, and then soaked with vinyl and then covered on the top with UV looks really cool- pearlescent-transparent. The thinned vinyl is to penetrate all your materials and make a solid fly, allowing the materials below to come to the surface as special effect colors. Then the UV coat gives transparent depth and allows all the undercolors to do even more amazing things. But after a few of these simple ones you may get adventuresome. Using the juice-bug tutorial as a basis lends for some experimentation. Nice thing is that everything comes out cool and fishable and gives you more ideas. So everyone's entries may be a hodge-podge of experiments gone well. I have a 100 or so in my boxes and have given away that many. I went back to old boxes and took out discard flies and treated them with the UV, glitter, and markers, and got some amazing new fishing flies. You'll find that markers and glitters are easy to use and give great results. You may hit on the simplest combo that the fish just can't resist. For panfish, I would do a pink ice-dub segmented scud with opal glitter in the UV- just a tad- would be killer. Chuck's pink panfish producer was rope-dubbed pink ice-dub. Just remember, it's a fun swap intended to let tiers play with techniques, especially Jelly-rope and UV goop. Right now there is no air conditioning in the family room so it is totally unbearable most of the time. Do combine my fly fishing with my Appleseed Rifle instruction when I can. Nothing like a couple of 8 rainbows in the skillet after a great day of shooting and history. Just wish it could be more often. Added a new pair of Apollo Bio Pro fins and love them. Might be a bit pricey but they work for me. It is good to be back.
