[VFB] Elk Hair
I want to thank all of you for the suggestions about getting Elk Hair for my Project Healing Waters group. Chris Helm sent us 24 pieces, which will help out quite a bit. Again, thank all of you for the assistance. Mike Drew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VFB Mail" group. Re: [VFB] Elk hair
We usually have 12 soldiers per fly tying session (7-weeks each) and 3 sessions a year. The fly fishing trips usually have between 6 - 12 soldiers and I'm not sure how often they go out, since I've only been with PHWFF since November. I do know that we pay to send a group on a guided trip in Montana each summer, and we are given access to private waters in the local area a few times a year. We use Skip Morris's book to teach the fly tying class. The recipe in the book calls for bleached elk hair, but I suspect that we'd settle for any type of elk at this point. I discussed this with higher headquarters (my wife) this morning, and she's given me the ok to buy some hair for PH, as long as I keep it reasonable, and she doesn't have to see it. (She got very upset when she walked into my fly tying area and saw the hare's mask on the bench). I do appreciate all of your suggestions and recommendations. Thanks again. Re: [VFB] Elk hair
Mike, You people are doing a great service for our troops, wish I could help. The Smuckers at Wapsi are good people and they have donated to my tying classes when I was teaching. I am sure Tom, Joe or Eric will help you out on this. Feel free to use my name at Wapsi or with Chris. Chris is another good guy. Thanks for working with the troops. The fly shops in the area also help out quite a bit, but right now all the fly fishing clubs in the area are soliciting donations for their fund raising raffles and auctions, so I am a bit hesitant to ask them at the moment. The regional coordinator here does have enough for this class of soldiers, but would rather get a donation of Elk for the next class instead of purchasing it, and use the savings for a guided fishing trip for the soldiers. Re: [VFB] Elk hair
Mule deer would work in may opinion. I have used it in place of elk with good results. You may also go to somewhere like a Sportsman's Warehouse and on their bulletin board put up a 3x5 card asking for a donation of elk hair. Many hunters tan a hide and then never really use it. Some tyers in the area may donate as well. Mike On Thu, Feb 10, 2011 at 5:58 AM, Michael Drew wrote: > I live in Colorado Springs, and volunteer at Ft. Carson.
