And I still haven't heard back from Iain Short, or anything about him.
No responses on email, and no bounce messages.
He was ready to send the Classic Wet Fly Swap out, and then nothing.

My wide has a double appointment at the doctors office this morning and
normally she will be there for a couple of hours. I have permission to fish
the pond alongside the parking lot.I have never got to fish it because of
time of the year or having my appointment. It was overcast and real windy
but I gave it a shot. Tied on a Peacock and Bronze. Had nothing for a while
then I got a good fish on. I never did see it before breaking off. I had
some 7X tipprt on my leader and had no other with me. Then I tied in a
Peacock body nymph with a gold bead head. That did yeild a couple of
Largmouth Bass. The takes were real slow, just felt the line tighten up and
the fish was there.
Had another take and when the bass came out of the water, he broke off. Tied
in a Peackock body bugger. When I turned out of the wind, I noticed my wife
back at the van waving me to come back. I could not belerve she was already
finished. Heading back to the van I made another cast and hooked up with a
Largmouth. That made five Bass, two break offs and one miss. Not bad for
about an hour fishing.

[VFB] Coal Bed Methane (CBM)

2010-05-19 Thread Neville Gosling
And now for the fishing content:-

I and many other residents of Britsh Columbia (BC) are vehemently opposed to
coalbed methane extraction. The Government and Industry are only interested
in the almighty $ and will gladly destroy a pristine part of BC in the
process. This tends to happen around some of the best fly fishing rivers in
the province. CBM poses a risk to: -

* Water sources contaminated by chemicals used during the extraction
process, and by the unanticipated underground migration of methane.
* Farmers' fields rendered useless by huge volumes of polluting water,
produced during the extraction process.
* Rural landscapes transformed into networks of roads, pipelines,
flaring gas wells and compressor stations whose ceaseless hum has been
compared to that of a large tractor.
* Plummeting values of adjacent real estate.
* Conservative, multi-generation farmers turned activists after the
promise of land rental fees is overshadowed by ballooning industrial
development rolling unchecked over private land.

The Elk River near Fernie, BC and the Morice/Bulkley River near Telkwa.

[VFB] We are the problem

2010-05-19 Thread Neville Gosling
DonO and others:

You are absolutely correct. We are the problem. However, having said that, I
have a big problem with career bureaucrats who have no real knowledge of the
"subject" and who make bad decisions on behalf of the "people".

Proper in depth environmental assessments are minimized and in many cases do
not even take place. The companies proposing a project, by and large, have
a poor track record, especially in mitigation of the environmental damage
that they cause. As President of the Totem Flyfishers, BC's oldest Fly
Fishing Club, I am in the process of "informing" my club members about a
proposal to "Blow the top off "Catface Mountain" in Clayoquot Sound on
Vancouver Island and to turn it into an open pit copper mine. This is or
rather was a prime habitat for coho (Silver) Salmon. I am fighting against
open net salmon farms because there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that
they and the sea lice that they attract are detrimental to juvenile
out-migrating salmon that are too small to combat lice infections. Our wild
salmon are disappearing.
fast. We have Run-of-the-River private power projects, where rivers are
dammed to produce power. A lot of these are actually American Owned. GE as
an example. The projects have proceeded with no environmental assessments.
As a result, I am rapidly becoming a very active environmentalist.

Tony and others:

You might want to try one of these fly threaders. It holds the eye of the
fly in line with the groove magnetically. After placing the fly, one simply
pushes the tippet along the groove (from right hand side), through the eye
of the hook and as you can see the end of the tippet comes out on the left.
They green thread in the photo is simply a lanyard that the person is
wearing around their neck so that the threader is always available. They
retail online for about $10.00. The eye of the fly must be clear of any
threads or hackles.

RE: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2010-06-01 Thread Neville Gosling
Back in the late 1950's when I was a youngster, I used to buy the "Angling
Times" weekly newspaper for the princely sum of "sixpence" which was 6 old
pence before they buggered everything up and went to the metric system of
100 pence to the pound from 240 pence to the pound! Anyhow, I digress,
Arthur Ransome used to write an occasional column for Angling Times which I
always found interesting. He spent quite a lot of his time in Russia, but
I'm not sure when. It may have been pre WWII.

Subject: Re: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

My two cents:

His comment doesn't make any sense.

1. He says "during the time period (past two decades) we have a
proliferation in new tying materials...". This comment refers to materials
2. But then he says "Truth to be told there seems to be little that is
truly new in the fly tying world."Whereas this comment refers to fly
design or patterns.

See below for an example of tying a czech nymph by Davie McPhail. He
virtually does your rope dub technique but his attachment of the dubbing to
the hook is different to yours in that he does not anchor it first before
turning the dubbing araound the thread with his fingersBut he does hold
the bobbin and twist the dubbing around the thread in the same manner as DO.

So which is it? Since there are many new materials, like foam and
synthetics, there must also be new techniques for applying these to hooks.
There are new books, DVDs, PATTERNS, AND techniques.

Foam patterns are very productive, and it would be a stretch to say a foam
hopper is a "recycled variation or modification using new materials on an
old, forgotten fly." That's rediculous. Braided body materials have
sparked hundreds of new patterns.

I know tiers who feel this way. They never create anything new, so they
refuse to see anything anyone else does as new. They find the closest thing
to compare it to, and call it a variation of that. It becomes a matter of
limited perspective rather than an actual fact.

I feel that I am a creative and innovative tier, but I rely on the biggest
names in the business for 2nd-hand verification of that. I, on the other
hand, am continually amazed by the new things great tiers dream up. The
level of artistry in realistic tying right now is incredible. Check Paul
Whillock's site.

YES, there are many times when a tier THINKS he has a new fly, pattern,
technique, or material, and then can be shown something that makes his an
identical - even if not intentional. The fly-tying industry right now is so
huge that one cannot research all of the patterns in the world before
claiming something is 'new'. In many cases patterns resemble well-known
originals many decades old. Others resemble later patterns that other tiers
have published that are not very well known.

The drive right now is to call everything you tie by your name. Everyone
wants their name on the books. Did 'Dave's Hopper' start all this? I can't
remember too many flies earlier that had the tier's name.

This is where the problems start. Who developed the coachman? Are you
sure? When did it become a royal coachman, a leadwing coachman, a fanwing
coachman, a then a (whoops) Royal Wulff? If the original tier wrapped a
body in peacock, is every peacock fly a copy or variation of that fly? If I
sub. peacock ice dub for peacock, is that still only a peacock variation?
What if I use black ice dub. Is that just a variation now, or is it a
black gnat? Color changed it? Why not the synthetic as a changer? What
about a Royal Wulff with poly wings? Is that still a Royal Wulff, since Lee
only made a change from white feather fanwings to white calf-tail to call it
a Royal Wulff? Can I call my Winger Adams a 'Don's Adams' like Lee Wulff
changed the Royal Fanwing Coachman by just changing the wing material?
(Maybe there was a tier named Royal Fanwing. No Buggs, there wasn't. And
nooo, we can't call a green Adams a Don's Adams-apple!)

I have had many 'amused' self-appointed masters approach my tying table tell
me that there's nothing new, especially in techniques. And them I rope-dub
them a 20-second fly and change their minds. And then I show them the
'Baits Hotel', and they learn what new thinking is all about.

Maybe some day someone will show and prove to me that the rope-dub technique
has been used by others.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC2aO5X0IJA I checked for 8 years and no one
could produce anything. I will then humbly admit that we share the same
technique. (It is not Polly's technique, which some mistakenly apply to it-
but I have his book, and it's not the same.) I was definitely not taught it
and did not read about it, and no one else has seen or read about it either,
and no patterns exist that I have been able to find. So if someone has
thought of it, they didn't extend it into all of the sub-techniques either.

So yes, it does sometimes happen that a fly pattern or technique has ben
done before. But if one believes that NO pattern or technique is new, then
that person needs to get (his head) out and see a little more.

Off my soapbox...

[VFB] Fishing report

2010-07-22 Thread Neville Gosling
I have just returned from a week long camping and fishing trip within 200
miles of where I live. Primarily, I was trying out my new-to-me 2001 Chalet
folding trailer or pop-up I think they are called.
Unfortunately, I have this need to drag the kitchen sink with me when I go
on such trips. I took far too many fly boxes and only used a handful of
flies and even tied some more during the trip. This was lake fishing for
Kamloops (rainbow) trout I and I chose the smaller more intimate lakes as I
prefer them The actual fishing was great but the catching was rather poor. I
was hoping for some sedge (caddis) hatches but only counted 3 for the whole
trip. It seems that the cold and wet spring messed up the hatches. I tried
fishing chironomids without success and after 3 days without so much as a
bite I ended up trolling a leech pattern as this was the method chosen by
the only person who was catching anything. My larger leech was ignored but
after swapping to a burgundy coloured micro leech (size 12) I had two
hook-ups in short succession. The first fish jumped twice with the hook
coming out on the second jump. The second fish was quite different. It came
straight towards the boat faster that I was able to strip the line in and
without being able to keep the line tight, that fish was also gone.

The next morning I did land a rainbow of about 4 pounds but it was still
slightly coloured (spawning). After that I landed a bright silver rainbow of
about 2 pounds.

Moving to another small lake that I had never fished before, I decided to
fish from my float tube. You would have died laughing at me trying to get in
my float tube because the lake bottom was like quicksand only it was quick
mud. I had great difficulty in standing on one flipper equipped foot while
trying to extract the other from the mud and step into the float tube.
Eventually, after much frustration I succeeded albeit with mud from my
flippers flung here there and everywhere. Once on the water I started to get
hits almost immediately, but nothing that you could strike. There would be a
quick tug and then it was gone. I put this down to small fish but after a
while I replace my micro leech with one with a shorter body and virtually no
tail. I still experienced the quick sharp tugs as before then suddenly I had
a solid hook-up and the fish leapt out of the water some distance from me.
Kicking as hard as I could to assist in keeping the line tight and striping
in at the same time the fish jumped two more times. It was a beauty. Bright
silver and in the 4-5 pound range. By now, I had the line on the reel and I
was drawing the fish close to me when suddenly it dove into the depths with
a jag jag head shaking at the rod end and suddenly all went slack. The
barbless hook had let go.

Trying to extract myself and my float tube from the lake proved to be even
harder than getting in it.

RE: [VFB] Re: Hook Co-op swap like the Whiting Co-op swap- suggestion

2010-07-26 Thread Neville Gosling
I cannot find these hooks on Hagen's downloadable catalogue. I think that
there must be a separate catalogue.

However, having said that, I would like to know more about the quality of
the hooks and the steel before buying. I feel that Japanese hooks have the
best steel. The hook is one of the most important parts of fly fishing, and
where I don't want to take chances. I am a bit leery about Chinese
manufactured hooks, not so much the manufacturing but more the quality of
the metal. My favourite hooks are made by Hayabusa of Japan and are of
superior quality. Gamakatsu are also very good. I can buy Asian (Chinese?)
copies of Tiemco hooks for a lot less but is the metal up to standard?

In my youth, the only hooks available to me were English, Norwegian and a
few VMC French.

KP & Al, I finally got it to work today. Yup, managed to get the catalog
pages up...one at a time. Found a couple of pictures that didn't fit the
hook descriptions, so don't know which is right, the picture, the
description or possibly neither. I should get the hard copy catalog in a
few days if my request went through. If it says/looks the same I'll be
asking about the hook because it is a possibility as a hook I might want to
try.

Hey ho

KEITH

These are a starting point only- gotta start somewhere. 10 swappers have to
settle on 10 hook styles and sizes.

That's why the swaps need to be separated- too many options over the broad
span of fishing.

[VFB] Hagen's Hooks

2010-07-26 Thread Neville Gosling
Thanks Rodger:

As Harmen pointed out, these hooks are the same as Dai-Riki and the numbers
associated with the hooks appears to be the same. Dai-Riki were originally
made in Japan, then I bought some from Byard that were made in Korea. Now
Hagen's are selling the same hooks in bulk at a very attractive price
whereas Byard ran into problems with Dan Bailey, the supplier of Dai-Riki
hooks because Byard was selling at less than the recommended retail price
and Byard dropped Dai-Riki as a result. I wonder if they are still made in
Korea.

16 orders for 1,000 hooks each order

I am not sure how this is swap going to be distributed. If it was 10
different orders of 100 hooks each order for a single hook size & style it
would be as DonO suggested. DonO's order is for 10, 000 hooks & is going to
amount to some $400.00 excluding postage. How is this to be apportioned?

LOL, well I for sure don't want to buy 1000 of ALL of the ones I listed.
(not right now anyway)
Those were just my most-wanted ones.
Green is a duplicate of ones I wanted for swapping.
700B could be used as a parachute emerger dry fly.

For this to work, though, everyone has to agree on 10 styles & sizes,
so that they would get 1/10th of each 1000 hook bag.
That's why I sent in 10 picks. I won't get all of the ones I want, but I buy
one of the bags.

If you only pick one, then what are the other 9 that you'll be getting 100
of?
What can you use for your type of fishing?

Remember the Whiting Co-op swap:
Had to have 5 swappers pick 5 different saddles to divide up (I thing it was
5). Then you got 1/5th of each saddle- variety vs bulk and much better
pricing than the 10-paks. But these were dry-fly saddles all, a narrow
range for a particular fly. Byard picked out lots of 5 by requests and
availabily, like midge saddles, and 5 co-oppers signed up for each set. If
you didn't want midge hackles or dry fly hackles, this was not your swap.

That's why I had a narrow window of trout hooks, but I could branch out with
other hooks I can use.

Rick needs to evaluate the requests and negotiate the most favored hooks.
Swappers must give a range and not be too dead set. Once he has 10 hooks
styles in 10 sizes that 10 swappers agree on, he has a complete co-op swap.
I will donate some hooks to Rick and some flies and make sure he has enough
$$$ for S&H to make it worth his while.

Hardest part- 10 swappers settle on 10 hook models and sizes.
Send Rick the average cost of all hooks (once settled), so that you don't
buy 1000 expensive hooks and get 900 less expensive hooks back.
Pay with Paypal or direct to Rick.
Send Rick a SABox with postage to be determined by Rick. Include in box
whatever for Rick's efforts.

End result is that you'll have 10 bags of 100 hooks of styles and sizes you
want (1000 total) for around $45.
My 'tip' to Rick will be a 5-hook kick-back of each size. Fair enough for
the work he'll do.

Once we work out the bugs, this method should work out as well as the
Whiting swaps did.
And there's no reason we can't do another Whiting Co-op swap, even is Byard
is on a different venture right now.

Saltwater SS hooks should be a separate swap for those in salt water.

Now, as to thinning the vinyl cement, do I really need a mix of all three of

Rod making legend lays off entire workforce

Posted: 05 Aug 2010 12:02 AM PDT

 gudebrod NCP thread
 The
Gudebrod thread company appears to be another casualty of recent economic
upheaval, with banks unwilling to lend and small businesses caught without
capital.

Gudebrod has been synonymous with silk and rod winding threads for decades,
yet has been forced to lay off its entire workforce.

W.E. "Nat" LeGrande Jr., company president, said he is hopeful the layoffs,
which occurred Friday, will be temporary. He said about 60 to 65 union and
non-union workers have been temporarily laid off from the 274 Shoemaker Road
facility while the financially troubled, family-owned company seeks new
capital.

- via
 The Mercury

The company has been struggling since the loss of the Glide dental floss
contract in 2007, which represented 63% of their net business, proving yet
again how little angling dollars contribute to a company's bottom line.

Us hoarders have learned to snatch up whatever stocks remain, as too often
published reports of "temporary" setbacks are found to be permanent
closures.

It's likely someone will fill the gap, but if you're an aficionado of their
products I would lay in a goodly supply of the colors used most. They can
use the bucks, and you'd be covered for the foreseeable future.

Gudebrod makes a wide variety of silk, nylon, and Kevlar threads for both
rods and flytying. Their "NCP" (no color preservative) thread was quite the
rage in the day as it remained opaque with no loss of color when a rod
finish was applied.

Thread making must be a hellish business as we've lost both Danville's
Monocord and (perhaps) the entire Gudebrod line in the same year.

The report I received said the entire workforce - my take is that the are
totally closed down and unless they can find some capital, the company is
likely finished.

I was on the Gudebrod Pro Staff for 6 or 7 years. They closed down the
program because it was not financially productive. I guess that is the
reason for shutting down the tying thread production too. Personally I think
it was the best tying thread made. Yes, that is my opinion. Now it looks
like all thread production is shut down.

When retrieving the line and coming to the end ,especially when the leader
comes through the tip top. The line speeds up enough to form a loop that
wraps on the tip of the rod and "snap" the tip off. In the bamboo and early
glass days, it was something that happened a lot when retrieving the line
at the end of the fishing day, it would be retrieved fast without thinking .
You had to just "tap" the lever when retrieving the line so that it would
come in slow. These reels were nutritious for jambing up if any dirt got
onto them. If they did, the line could not be wrapped on the spool. When
taking them apart to clean them, the retrieve spring would come out and
"bite" you if you were not careful.. I have taken several apart and getting
the spring back was a chore.

[VFB] Ant fly swap

Crossed the Canada/USA border and picked up the ant swap flies from the Post

Great set of ants. Most of which were much more delicate and smaller than
mine. A good selection of well tied traditional style thread or fur ants, a
very nice CDC ant from Thomas (I doubt that I would be able to see it in the
water,- just hang on and wait for a pull!) , Wes's GT ant and detailed
instructions for tying and DonO's bead ant.

Since you are an owner of at least one Google Groups group that uses the
customized welcome message, pages or files, we are writing to inform you
that we will no longer be supporting these features starting February 2011.
We made this decision so that we can focus on improving the core
functionalities of Google Groups -- mailing lists and forum discussions.
Instead of these features, we encourage you to use products that are
designed specifically for file storage and page creation, such as Google
Docs and Google Sites.

For example, you can easily create your pages on Google Sites and share the
site (http://www.google.com/support/sites/bin/answer.py?hl=en
http://ww
w.google.com/support/sites/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=174623>
&answer=174623) with the members of your group. You can also store your
files on the site by attaching files to pages
(http://www.google.com/support/sites/bin/answer.py?hl=en
http://ww
w.google.com/support/sites/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=90563> &answer=90563)
on the site. If you're just looking for a place to upload your files so that
your group members can download them, we suggest you try Google Docs. You
can upload files (http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en
http://do
cs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=50092> &answer=50092) and
share access with either a group
(http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en
http://do
cs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66343> &answer=66343) or an
individual (http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en
http://do
cs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=86152> &answer=86152),
assigning either edit or download only access to the files.

Starting in January 2011, Groups will no longer allow the creation or
editing of welcome messages, files and pages; the content will only be
available for viewing and only existing files will be downloadable. If you
would like to keep the content currently on the pages and files sections of
your group, we highly encourage you to export and migrate it to another
product. In February 2011, we will turn off these features, and you will no
longer be able to access that content.

To make this move easier for you, we have enabled a one-click method for
downloading a ZIP file containing your welcome message and all pages and
files. Download these ZIP files by clicking "Download all pages" or
"Download all files" on the pages and files homepages of your groups.

Thanks for taking the time to read this email and for using Google Groups.

Yours sincerely,
The Google Groups Team

[VFB] Eggi Jaun Kenobi

2010-11-04 Thread Neville Gosling
Hi Joyce:

While I have never tied this particular fly? I have tied lots of Glo bugs.
For me, the key to a successful glo bug is tying the glo bug yarn as tight
as I can to the hook. I usually tie 3 or however many pieces of yarn at the
same time and not one after another. The key is to center the thread in just
one place on the hook, then it takes the round shape more easily after being
trimmed. You also have to pull upwards quite hard when cutting the yarn to
the desired length.

You photos were fine BTW.

[VFB] Tups Indsipensible dubbing

Hi Dono;

Here's a photo I have of some earlier attempts:
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii179/Waynebh/IMGP0015.jpg

The fly is composed of Gutermans sewing silk abdomen, with a home made wool
dubbing from the following reciepie: To prepare the dubbing, cut off
approximately 25 inches of natural-shade (#098) "Fisherman's Wool". This is
available from Lion Brand Yarn Company (http://www.LionBrand.com
<http://www.lionbrand.com/> ). Next, cut off 3 inches of True Red (#114)
yarn, also available from Lion Brand. The dull orange (needle felting) wool
comes from Felt Works Dimensions and is available from many craft stores.
Take the lengths of Fisherman's Wool and red yarn and cut into half-inch
pieces. First blend the Fisherman's Wool, then the red wool, then combine
the two and mix again in a blender. Once these are blended, tease out
approximately 1 inch of cheddar-shade needle felting wool and cut into
quarter-inch pieces. Blend with the previous two. This results in a creamy
pink dubbing with just a hint of dull orange scattered faintly throughout
the wad."

I know you can touch dub using a rope dub method, it was just not working
for me.

2010-11-05 Thread Neville Gosling
Hi Wayne:

It is not so much the making of the dubbing but, for me at least, it is the
time spent trying to track down the ingredients. It is possible that one
could get some of the ingredients here (in Canada) if one knows where to go
to get it. Sometimes, I find that I have to mail order from the USA which
is what I did for the jelly rope, however I got the wrong size.

You might as well use a flatfish!

Re: NorVise I have one. I bought it secondhand and I like it for certain
types of flies. You can sure apply dubbing very quickly and effectively with
it using the full rotary function. I use different vises for different
purposes. I use a 1984 Regal Inex for tying tubes and larger steelhead
flies. Each vise has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Agreed - but Neville, he says the fish love it. I may have to try
one of those out. Who knows? Maybe I'll become a lure fisherman. :-P

I still find it interesting that people pay all those big bucks for
true rotary vises (Nor-vise in this case) and barely use the rotary
function. The majority use it just to turn the fly over to look at
the far side AFTER they've finished the fly.

If you look at the terms and conditions google do own the list.

However, the group leader/owner is indeed Byard as he started it.
Linesend.com is therefore the right full sponsor of the list.

The list has it was before, I believe was on Byards server but I may be
wrong on this.

It would be nice if Byard put us right on this to stop the confusion but
this is my understanding of how it works.

Deb and Others

I attended a fly fishing show in Bellvue WA in February 2009 and while at
the show, purchased a tube fly kit from the Eumer stand.

I agree with Deb that the Eumer products are expensive and that the discs
tend to chip easily.

Since then, I have purchased some of the Mikael Frodin "Fits" tubes and
accessories including Hakan Norling's step tapered needle.

I am still playing around with both, but never seem to find enough time to
do what I want and so it becomes a seasonal thing. Tubes for steelhead in
the winter, Chironomid and attractors in the spring, dries & nymphs in the
summer, salmon flies in the fall and then start all over again.

RE: [VFB] Webcam

Hi Tony:

It's ok for Skype and similar communications where both parties see each
other on their PC or laptop screens. As I said before, they are designed to
view the face of the caller and personally I don't think that they are good
enough to view a tying sequence. I'm not saying it is impossible, just
difficult to do. I suspect that a person would have to set it up so that the
webcam pointed away from the PC operator in order to view a fly tying
sequence. Just my 2 Cents worth.

P.S. If you want to try it with Skype on a face to face conversation, I'm
willing to be your guinea pig!

used to capture pictures, and the dynamic pixel is to capture video. The
video pixel of webcam is more important if it is used for video, and the
picture pixel is more important if it is used to capture pictures. Our

2010-12-02 Thread Neville Gosling
Hi Nick:

I beg to differ. They ran into serious financial difficulties and layed off
the entire staff. Production was ended for a period of time while the owners
sought financial help. I believe that they sold off the medical and dental
floss side of the business and the electronics division assets only.

They are now back concentrating on what they do best - Fishing threads etc.

I couldn't get any fiery brown artic fox for the mouth or any wild boar

This is teid on a Eumer tube.

[VFB] tube flies

2010-12-18 Thread Neville Gosling

Hi Rene:

I've seen this idea before but it does not appeal to me. I prefer to have a
selection of tube flies ready built that work for me. I don't like the idea
of multiple tubes. I would consider placing a cone in front of a tube if I
wanted to fish deeper and did not have a heavier tube, however, that would
mean that I would have to ensure that the cone stays in place by jamming a
wooden toothpick between the line and the cone.

Neville (Nev) Gosling

Hi
in a recent mag I found an interesting article about a 'tube fly
construction kit' for streamside use.
The concept is, that you tie the components of a tube fly (Wing, body,
front hackle,..) on seperate, short tubes and later on the water, you
select a body, a wing etc., fiddle them on your leader, attach the hook,
and voila..
I' just started to build some of these components.
Anybody else has done this so far?
Rene

[VFB] Whiting Eurohackles?

2010-12-21 Thread Neville Gosling
HI Joyce:

Thanks for the info and link. I thought the marketing was interesting - the
name "Euro-hackles." If I walked into a fly shop that sells whiting
products and asked to see their Euro-hackles, they wouldn't have the
foggiest idea of what I was talking about. In fact, I might get some strange
looks!

Some of these Whiting saddles and capes look so appealing to a fly tier.

I think that it would have to be someone who is resident in the USA that
meisters the swap or there could be customs or tax problems.

Byard used to meister them and do the plucking & repackaging.

If someone had the time and inclination, and was a long-standing member of
the VFB in good standing and accessible by other VFB-ers, I could get them
set up with Dr. Tom to get wholesale pricing on 'co-op' saddles.

This time he will send the re-packaging bags and header cards, so there's no
problem with his re-packaging rules.

[VFB] Wrapping single foot guides.

2011-01-05 Thread Neville Gosling
The key to wrapping single foot guides is to start the wrap on the blank,
then wrap the thread over the guide foot and then place a small number of
wraps (3-4) immediately behind the foot and the guide. This helps to lock it
in place. Then coat the wrap with whatever finish you are using and one has
to look real hard to see the wraps behind the foot. I've never had a single
foot guide that I have personally wrapped come loose ...yet!

I made one rod with single foot guides quite a few years back (okay,
probably 30!). Never again. Even though they were tightly wrapped and had
several coats of epoxy on them, I had a guide slip out. I lost the guide,
but since it was the only fly rod I had, I went out fishing with it and
derned if another guide didn't come out of the wraps.

I"ll stick with Snake guides, thank you.

But of course, I'm old and crotchety.

good quality snakes for all my fly rods. I have modern fly rod with single
foots and I don't like the sound as the line passes through the single foots
- they are noisier than snakes. Rod manufacturers like single foots because
less wraps reduces the cost. I used to think snake guides were old
fashioned but in fact, they are quite efficient.

on single foot guides, you will have to take it home to wrap it. LOL Now I
stand to be stomped on by single footers.

Hi Tony;

I see, for me I started assembling spinning rods prior to fly rods. Most of
the spinning rods I built used single foot guides so I guess single foot
guides look more "normal" to me. I'm working on a 7'6" fiberglass 3wt and
actually using single foot ceramic ring lock guides just to see how it works
compared to more conventional fly guides. I have another 7'6" glass blank
that I plan on using single foot titanium fly guides to see how much the two
differ.

I think if I built a bamboo rod, I have to use snakes just for the nostalga
aspect. I do envision single foot guides on it though.

It is a personal thing, I just don't like them. I guess I was weened on
Snake Guides.
Another thing. if not wrapped right, they will slip out from the wrap. Again
we do what we want to do and what pleases us.

RE: [VFB] Fly rod guides

Wayne et al:

Apart from the ceramic lined stripper, the single foot guides are unlined. I
am using a standard Rio or Cortland line not the SA textured sharkskin
lines. I could be blindfolded and still recognize this commercially made
rod by the sound that the line makes passing through the single foot guides.
Having said that, I have not noticed any change to the distance of the cast.

Hi Neville;

I have an 8ft 6wt fly rod with gold single foot guides and don't notice any
sound at all. The builder did use pretty large guides though to keep the
line away from the rod, I think theyr'e sizes 4's and 3's. I also have
another custom built rod, a 7ft 11wt rod built for kayak fishing for
redfish. It has ELEVEN guides, first two double foot rest, single foot and
all are recoil guides. I know it sounds like a weird design but it's a real
cannon, even with a 9wt bas bug taper. I can't recall it making much noise
either. I don't fish it very often because it's a fast graphite rod and I
only use it if I'm fishing on really windy days, then it excells even with
an underweight line.

Hi Rene:

Here's what I do.

* Go to the blank maker's website and download their recommended
spacing for your particular rod.

http://www.fishpacbay.com/product-info/guide-spacing.html

* Using narrow masking tape, affix the guides per the recommended
spacings;

* Put a line (and reel if you have a handle installed) on the rod
and with mild tension on the line check the line spacing and adjust a small
amount as required.

I use typewriter "white out" liquid to mark the guide spacings. These can be
easily removed.

Now I'm determining the position of the guides. On my last rod I used

some tables I got from the web.

But for this rod I want to do it more precise. Base rule is that the

angle between blank and line should be equal on the left and right side

of the guide (When the blank is bend, for sure).

Therefore I assume that the position of the guides not only depends on

length and weight of the rod, but also of the action. Has anybody a

link, where I can find information about this dependency, maybe a table

which shows length, weight and action of the rod?

Right now I have the idea to bend the blank using some lead, measure the

curve of the rod, do a drawing and than search the positions of the

guides on the paper using the rule mentioned above.

What are you doing to determine the position of the guides?

Hi All;

I took a look and it appears that these would work except where the
diameter of the rod is ¼” or less.

found small rubber bands on ebay:

I still use the narrow masking tape, most likely do to the fact that one
roll will last a long time. I bought mine at an art/drafting supply store.

This stuff is made out of crepe paper with something added to provide a
straight edge. It may work but I wonder about the strength and stickiness
when

compared with regular masking tape. I have no experience of using it. I
still have lots left on my roll of 1/8th masking tape, but since it is 20+
years old, it has lost its stickiness and breaks easily when removing from
the spool.

Again, easily found on ebay:

If you really like the 1/8" masking tape, check the autobody supply
sources.
Or a local repair/custom paint shop.
My father worked in autobody repair most of his life. He had masking tape
