[videoblogging] Re: how do you feel about video popping up in a new window?

2005-10-10 Thread aroundtheperimeter
I have to say that I think I agree with you. Sometimes I don't mind
it, but sometimes I hate it when a new window pops up. Of course now
that I tab everything its not really a big deal for me (firefox). You
can say "offensive". Who cares! I posted some ideas I was having and
someone responded with "Everyone's an expert."... I KNOW I'M NOT
EXPERT! I can't even figure out how to get my QT PRO TO work on my
PC. Sorry for that tangent. Maybe I should creat a poll about the
window pop up..hmm

For me it is very annoying.

Web content is made out of text, graphics, video whatever, and
presented together in a single page.

I won't use the word "offensive", because I got in trouble for it
last time, but for a web site to then make a decision to open a new
window for you, is against the whole point of the web:
interconnecting content, presented in a way decided by the viewer,
not the author.

If I want to open a new window, I'll either Apple-click in Safari, or
shift-click in windows to do just that. I'll make the decision thank
you, I don't want the content guessing the way I like to work.

If a page opens a window for me, I'll usually close both windows and
not come back to the site. There's a million sites to look at,
without having to deal with ones that waste my time and effort to
look at them.

Just my opinion. :-)

  Richard

You need popups whenever you spin off an independent timeline. An
edit box has a timeline, a video has a timeline, but a passive control
like a title doesn't have a timeline.

[videoblogging] Re: Vlogging Highs and Lows

2005-10-10 Thread Gena
Aw hell, I'm never gonna get any sleep at this rate...As usual I have
questions.

1. Why did you vlog/blog? What was your reason?

For me, blogging was an extension of what I do verbally, sharing
information, seeing the world anew, discovering new destinations.

Video blogging allows me to do that and make the invisible, visible to
more people. That is partly why I am here, as in earth here, not just
yahoo here. It allows me to communicate. Whether I should or not is
another topic of discussion.

It also taps into my need to create. There are no gatekeepers. I
choose. I can choose to do or not do. So my next question to you is:

2. Why do you have to put out "great content?" Why do you have to put
out at all? (I'm not talking about anything you do with your wife ;-])

I'm not Rocketboom. Or Verdi or Keever or Zadi or Carl Weaver or any
of the other 1,799 folks. I just do the best I can. I have to remind
myself of this from time to time. There are folk doing stunning work.
I have to allow myself to be myself - not someone else's work.

3. It is also okay to take a break. A rest period. Why is this not
okay for you to do? There was a time I loved doing collage. Then I
stopped. I had done what I needed to do. I can pick it up again if I
want to but it is okay if I choose not to do this. But I am not at
that point.

4. Are you worried that you are gonna miss the "Pioneer Train?" That
you will sit back and say to yourself "Oh, I use to do that and now
people I know have hit the hights. Gee, I was on the ground floor and
I let it pass me by?"

Too much pressure. Live for the moment. Be here now. Lemee, see what
other cliche can I pitch out, oh yeah... take care of yourself.

Maybe you like "new experiences" and this is no longer "new" Or you
just might be a bit burned out. Take a pause for the cause.

And a bubble bath. I know most men don't like taking bubble baths but
they are really a form of medicine. You get some chocolate, some
bubbles in the water and submerge/emerge.

I'm just saying, it is an option.

[videoblogging] Re: Not a videoblog, a 'signlog'!

2005-10-10 Thread Gena
I'd like to take a different approach to this. Most folks start with
the technology and not with the potential viewers needs. Nothing wrong
about looking at the tools but let me suggest another way to look at
this challenge.

*What is the bandwith that most of the viewers will be using? If they
are on dial-up for economic reasons then the videos are gonna have to
be <5MB or 160x120, at that size not good for signing. Yes, more and
more folks are moving to affordable cable/broadband but what are the
bulk of your potential viewership using?

This will help you make decisions based on their current needs not
what you feel they ought to have. You know you have to have a higher
frame rate than what we normally do here but you are gonna have
balance that with what folks use to connect to the Internet?

*If you are starting small, then a single source solution (free to
experiement with) would be Blip.tv. In terms of getting folks use to
the processe and finding out what your particular group needs. It is
pretty straight forward.

I do understand you want a community vlog with multiple features but
think of this as step one - getting folks to understand what a vlog is
and how it can be used to communicate and preserve culture/language.

*I think for the young teens/adults it is not going to be that much of
a learning curve and one of the missions here is to teach as many
people as possible how to do this. Young, old, everybody that wants to
learn.

We have started classes around the country and are figuring out how to
do explain this process to all kinds of people. Thanks for the butt
kick to remind me to write down an accessible (for all) lesson plans
outline.

*If you are choosing between mpeg-4 and 3ivx I'd go with mpeg-4, many
people have QuickTime and would be able to access the videos with no
problem.

If there is one thing we love around here is pushing boundries and
inventing new ways to do things. And don't be so hot to chuck the
video part of the signlog - what if there is a different narrative
structure when a deaf person makes a video that doesn't have signing?

I'm taking your questions to bed now, keep in touch.

i like it if it is a size controlled window with embedded player, and
its helpful if it places itself in top left of screen.  i am doing
this for video playlists on vlogdir.com
its nice because i can watch an entire rss video feed and still browse the web in main window or whatever.

[videoblogging] get yo vlog on... featured video and videoblog on vlogdir (request)

2005-10-10 Thread Michael Sullivan

hi.
here's the deal.  on vlogdir.com, i have been featuring 1 video
and 1 videoblog on the main page for calendar months.  these have
been of my choosing for sake of temporary ease.
i have a submission queue feature sorta ready for the community to
use... but until i turn it on and decide how it will work (random or
selecting from batch etc), i am just going to start posting call-outs
here to the community and let you choose.

if you would like your video or videoblog featured for 1 calendar
month, rest of october in this case because i slacked, then simply
respond to me off-list with url etc.
of course, you could suggest other peoples if you like but i will
prob start asking permission first since it will get you alot of
hits/downloads and would need to make sure this wont cause a
problem.

it's your call.
first response first serve deal.
1 for featured video and 1 for featured videoblog (i know its basically the same result but i like to put both up ;-)

for the past month, I have featured Zadi's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" video and Schlomo's
Echoplex Park Videoblog

also, if you have suggestions on how to feature videos and vlogs, i'm
all eyes and ears.  ourmedia approach seems to work well...
or maybe just make a pool and run a script to do random selections every few weeks??

alright, thanks!

get   yo   vlog  on

[videoblogging] Vlogging Highs and Lows

2005-10-10 Thread Tim D

Hey Vloggers and Vloggettes,

At the risk of going out on a limb here personally, and as something of
an attempt to start a conversation about the more psycho-social aspects
of videoblogging, I thought I would talk to you all about
feelings.  You know, touchy-feely kinda stuff.  As a
counselor, I excel at that sort of thing, so gather round on the green
shag carpet, turn up your listening ears, and hear my
story.   I'm hoping some of you out there may have
experienced what I am going to call the highs and lows of personal
media publishing.  When I started vlogging back in May, I had been
looking for something new and innovative to funnel my creative energy
into.  Being introduced to this community was the start of an
awesome time of discovery for me.  Hell, I didn't even know I had
video editing software on my computer, let alone how to use it!  I
swore that this was finally it.  I had found my niche.  I've
learned so much since then.  I was tired of simply blogging, and
vlogging was the next level.  Why hadn't I found this place
earlier?  For the last several months I have made videos about all
types of things.  I've grown more and more comfortable in front of
the camera, all while dealing with my own personal privacy
issues.  I've been acting as a reporter for We Are The Media for
the last two months, and that totally legitamized what I was
doing.  I felt accepted.  I even got a digital videocam as a
wedding present from my wife!  The point is, right now I am
experiencing my personal vlogging "low".  Even after all that
self-discovery, I'm losing it.  I'm having a hard time turning on
the camera.  I am finding it difficult to edit footage that I
would have jumped at not that long ago.  I'm not even watching
vlogs as much as I used to.  My poor FireANT is getting all backed
up.  I guess I'm having a hard time figuring out why I've lost
thatoomph.  Maybe it's pressure to perform, to put out great
content, meaningful content.  What is meaningful anyway?  I
feel like it has been only 5 short months, and I'm already losing
it.  I'm feeling this squeeze, and I'm starting to walk the other
way.  Perhaps it vlog overload.  Then I have to ask myself,
am I taking this too seriously?  Or maybe I'm not taking it
seriuosly enough.  Am I cut out to be part of the early stages of
a movement?  That is what this is, afterall.  You know that,
right?  So many questions with so many different answers, I
suppose.  I'm hoping one or two of you out there have experienced
this before.  After blogging for about 2.5 years, I just decided
one day that I was through, and I ripped my whole site down, archives
and all.  Vlogging was my "re-birth", if you will.  Now I'm
feeling that same pointlessness all over again.  I feel very
disconnected, and I'm thinking about entering the cocoon phase again
(don't worry...I won't emerge as Wilford Brimley...at least I hope
not).

Listen...I'm not a dramatic person, but I was encouraged to throw this
out there to the group to inspire some discussion.  I think the
list has been very technical lately, and it's good to mix it up a
bit.  That's what I'm doing.  Mixing it up.  Take it as
you will, and vlog on.

[videoblogging] Re: Not a videoblog, a 'signlog'!

2005-10-10 Thread breesidhe2000
Thanks for the good advice. Although not a solution, it gets me closer to one.
=)

Your advice to start small is quite wise. I'm actually aiming to do that, but
trying to be
forward thinking so I resolve problems before hand, instead of being trapped
into platform
that can't grow with the site. I think an open source solution more ideal,
since once the
site expands, I can try to customize the code to make it more suitable to our
needs. For
now, what ever is closest to 'good enough' will have to do.

The question then becomes what I can use that can be moved from 'good enough'
to great
in an ideal future.

Let me answer your questions though...

> How big will the videos people upload be? Uploading via a browser has
> seriously problems when files start getting bigger than 10 or 20MB or so.

My thought is that if i limit the time to a maximum of 2-3 minutes, remove the
audio and
have good compression, I can aim to keep videos at or under 8 MB. Likely
smaller, but that
number gives me breathing room. I'm still trying to figure out how much smaller
to aim for
in an acceptable quality/size ratio.

I've been experimenting with compression types, and would have to say that
signed videos
are more ideal at at least 25 fps. The problem is that some people sign VERY
fast, enough
to seem off at a slower frame rate. (To put it in perspective, a pissed-off
rapid fire signer
can sign fast enough to blur under your own two eyes. )
A more leisurely signing pace seems to work ok under a slower frame rate
without
problems but I can't rely on that. Thats really the only encoding issue that
gives me any
problems. I do need to keep the quality and data rate slightly higher to ensure
'crisp'
visibility of the signs, but from my experience following normal suggestions
for
compressing a video at a higher quality works just fine.

Yeah, I think this is actually how archive.org's system currently works.
The downside of this process is that it adds latency to the request and
can't be implemented in straight HTML or Javascript.

The Javascript-based tricks can be trickier to understand, but don't
require any back-end code, and more importantly, can operate in the
background once the linking page is loaded rather than waiting until the
user actually clicks the link - no latency.

Yeah, Swarmcast is a proxy-based peer-to-peer system that supports
progressive video playback. So any app that speaks HTTP can
transparently use Swarmcast for peer-to-peer delivery. It definitely
works with curl, and likely works with FireANT.

Its still an early BETA and the P2P component is only partially enabled
as we continue our scaling tests, so don't expect too much yet. When
done, we think the approach will be great for folks trying full screen
or HD-quality video.

Yes, I'm also curious about this. Can one copy, say, a 30-second clip

vlog? Is that considered Fair Use?

And yes, I know, you're not lawyers ;-) and no, I don't want to start

[videoblogging] Re: Not a videoblog, a 'signlog'!

2005-10-10 Thread Steve Watkins
Greetings,

Welcome to the group.

Im just about to eat dinner but here is a brief start at replying to
the questions youve raised.

I havent seen the features you need in a CMS. I havent seen a CMS
thats truly built video into the heart of its system. Drupal and
wordpress video modules do work, but they are far from a polsished and
hassle free experience for the user.

Part of the revolution in text blogging was how easy and intuitive the
publishing tools became, I dont think we are quite there with video yet.

How big will the videos people upload be? Uploading via a browser has
seriously problems when files start getting bigger than 10 or 20MB or so.

Ourmedia is a good example of a community site using drupal, but also
it would seem a possible example of one of your fears, being a victim
of own sucess, in terms of available server capacity not matching
demand etc. Id start small, whatever solution you go for, take it in
steps and see how well it scales to increased numbers of publishers
and viewers.

In the absense of an existing CMS with amazing intuitive and flexible
video features, you can either find ways to encourage such
developments to happen, or try to dodge the issue. Use a CMS for the
site, but make use of a seperate service provider who hosts the videos
and has an easy publishing/upload feature for video.

Im really out of date when it comes to how good the video publishing
features of services are, rather than available opensource DIY
systems. But maybe there are some that are great, if you are prepared
to pay a little. Whats that audioblog.com or whatever its called like?
Se I dont even know the right names, Im just saying you may have luck
with combining a CMS with an external video service.

Also agree with you that the solutions for saving bandwidth mostly too
clunky and spoil ease of use for users.

Is sign language fast enough that youd want to use 25/30 frames per
second for video rather than the more typical 15 fps that a lot of
videobloggers use? Video formats are a nightmare, there is no
universal agreement, luckily your situation probably still fits most
encoding advise that people will give you, just maybe not framerate.

Im out of time for nowm my pies are cooked

Good luck with this stuff

I've heard good things about Drupal, and Mambo might also be a good
solution for this. Both are more community oriented than some of the
Blogging solutions. They also have RSS built in which is handy.

[videoblogging] Not a videoblog, a 'signlog'!

2005-10-10 Thread Brein
Let me introduce myself here, as I'm new to this group.
I'm Brein Mcnamara, a 28 year old new transplant to the wilds of
minnesota. The most interesting thing about me is the main reason I'm
sending this message.

I'm Deaf.

The majority of deaf people communicate in a visual medium. That is,
sign language. Videoblogging seems to be a great medium for
communicating in sign language. The trick is to find a way to take
full advantage of the medium, and to encourage more use of it. Deaf
people are an odd mix when it comes to technology. Many are not
exactly technically inclined, but at the same time very eager to use
tools that make it easier for them to communicate. (for example, many
deaf people use video relay services...like http://sorensonvrs.com
for one).

As a solution to this, my thought is to create a video news site in
ASL(American Sign Language) that is community oriented. This would
both provide a beneficial use of video in ASL, and allow user
participation and learning about the medium.

At the risk of being redundant, I'd like to ask this group some
questions, (I've looked through the archives, but asking in the hope
of getting answers more specific to my needs can't hurt).

Which content management system would be recommended in this
situation? to clarify, I would need:

* community focused features, not just for a single blog.

* EASY ability to upload and post videos. Posting videos by hand
isn't enough, there has to be an easy work flow for users to be able
to do this on their own. I will provide a tutorial on how to create a
video, but after that, its best if it requires zero intervention on
my part.

* user friendly enough for it to be accessible to those with lower
technical literacy.

I'm looking at drupal now, but the video module being in beta isn't
exactly encouraging.

What type of videos would be recommended?
Four fold requirements here..

*With the least bandwidth.. I'm looking at potentially providing a
large amount of videos, so a free provider would not likely be an
option. Thus, serious bandwidth issues will kick in.

*with the most accessibility.. for people to view without problems,
or complicated steps.

*with the ability to easily create and post. .. essential if I am
going to allow others to provide their own videos. (read: no
conversion steps on my part required after I receive them. )

* the best quality... sign language has relatively fast motion, and
also requires the need to clearly see facial expressions and body
language. (audio would likely be tossed out the door since its not
needed). This is a different and more strict set of requirements from
most videoblogs.

My first thought is to use either either the mpeg-4 or 3ivx codecs
with quicktime streaming (more accurately, progressive downloads) as
it seems less bandwidth intensive while at the same time being very
accessible.

Is there any alternative way to cut down on bandwidth thats still
easy to use?
If i can get away with using the free video hosts, i'd try it, but I
don't think thats an option. I've been looking for a torrent
solution, such as broadcast machine (http://participatoryculture.org/
broadcast/) but I haven't seen anything that is easily incorporated
within a CMS system. Torrents are a kind of manna from heaven
solution of bandwidth, but unless its easy to use, It's not useable
with a deaf audience.

I hope I've provided you guys (and gals) with an interesting
challenge and not bored ya with newbie questions. My needs are a
little beyond the videoblogging most people do, since I want to have
a community oriented video blog, and its also a niche I'm sure many
haven't thought about. Although I have asked questions more suitable
of a newbie, I think my approach kind of requires re-evaluating the
basic videoblog needs here.

Thanks,
Brein

Justin -

Interesting idea, but I for one would not want to use a link that requires the viewer to install software.

However this could probably be done on a server side solution - it could work alot like the tinyurl service except that the server has a 1-many rather than 1 to one map for urls it creates ... for example, maybe users sign up with a service and can then enter in a series of urls to be hidden behind one url with the service.  Upon a request to that url the server would then have to check http request header results or something to find the first / prefered available link in the set ... and then redirect the users browser to that url.

(maybe that wouldnt work...I dunno...just kinda thinking out loud)

Thank you for all your comments. I just wanted to be a bit more
specific though.

I'm looking to host a vblog site. Blogger or some other services
wouldn't help me do that. I was poeple to sign up at my site and
submit videos.

For example, a person stated that they were using phpBB to host their
site. So I'm actually looking for the backend software. phpBB, mambo,
php-nuke, would all be excellent examples, but I don't know if their
the best for a video blog.

Wordpress seems to be something some people are using, but I wanted to
get everyone's opinion.

I'm not familiar with Swarmcast, but this is what I imagined doing...

1. On my site, I'd enter all of the urls where my video is stored.

2. I'd then have a url like http://mysite.com/serve?latest-video.mov

3. When the url is requested, I would then check each url where that
video is stored, so I do a head request to ourmedia.org and if all is
well, send a 302 redirect to to the client to get the actual file. If
ourmedia.org sends anything but a 200 response to my script, I move on
and try the next server, perhaps blip.tv, etc...

I'd worry about the overhead of making the request to the remote
servers, but without trying it, it's hard to tell how bad it might (or
might not) be.

As far as Swarmcast, it sounds like it does some sort of proxying and/or
BitTorrent like stuff. The site says "Works with Windows, Mac OS X, and
Linux running Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari." - Um yeah, but
what about FireANT, curl, etc?

Thats actually the way we were doing it back in 2002, but adding
Javascript to a site was too confusing for a lot of people. I think
you're right though and I should probably brush up the old Javascript
code and at least document it to give people another option thats a
little more tricky to use, but ultimately more reliable.

The software itself doesn't rely on swarmcast.net itself once it

the source URL is whats actually used.

Many many apologies.  I had apparently misread the posts about the
Cogent/Level 3 issue.  I didn't mean to besmirch blip in any way.

No worries, Justin.

I should have been more clear. The swarmcast solution doesn't only
require swarmcast for generating the link. It also requires that
swarmcast be up and running for the link to work. Swarmcast is acting
as a redirector.

What would really be nice is if there was a piece of _javascript_ that
could handle this, instead of simply relying on one more server
somewhere.

[videoblogging] Multi-Linking Blip.tv and OurMedia Together

2005-10-10 Thread Justin Chapweske
One approach to dealing with the recent unreliability of Blip.tv and
OurMedia is to use both rather than just relying on one or the other.

Normal HTTP links require that you point to a single server, and if that
server is down, you're toast. With the multi-link feature that we're
testing out with the current Swarmcast beta, you can use multiple
redundant sources for your data, so you get fault tolerance as well as
faster downloads.

So, if anyone is feeling adventurous, you can try out the LinkGenerator
at (http://swarmcast.net/toys/LinkGenerator), upload a file to a couple
of different servers, and try out a multi-mirror link. Heck, you could
even add a Coral CDN link in there for good measure and to save you some
money w/o being slowed down when Coral is slow.

If this feature actually ends up being useful to folks, there are a
number of optimizations we can do, so any feedback is really
appreciated.

More info is available at (http://swarmcast.net/).

Thanks,

-Justin

[videoblogging] Re: blinkx

2005-10-10 Thread Steve Watkins
Thanks to the people who took time to fill me in on what blinkx is
doing that is wrong.

This has caused me to think a lot about licensing issues again. To me
its never cut and dry, and the intellectual rights laws are not setup
to protect us automatically, tragically we cannot sit back and expect
everyone to honour our rights.

I keep reading the full legal version of the various creative commons
licenses, and other stuff on the cc website, and I cannot help that
thinking that is we want protection and to actually gain the benefits
of the cc licensing system, content creators need to be more
proactive. We must follow the letter of the license ourselves, and
take steps to raise awareness of these issues with commercial
violators that come along.

People vary as to how much they care about this stuff. If you care a
lot about your rights being protected, I ask you to consider the
following:

1) How prominently is your cc license displayed? Is it present only on
your website, or also in your RSS feed, embedded metadata or as video
within the video? Rocketboom does not even show the cc details on the
same page as the video content, something I mentioned previously.

We know how automated things have gotten due to syndication etc.
Theres a creative commons module for RSS, we need to use this stuff
and then show violators how they can clean up their act by harnessing
this technology.

2) Does your own content invalidate the license?

If you use content within your video that you know you dont have the
rights to, your cc license is invalid.

3) Attribution.

The creative commons license says that attribution should be done in
the manner that the original author of the works requests. Yet I see
nobody who has ever stated how attribution should be performed. Does
klinking to your original RSS feed count? Thers massive variety in how
this issue is tackled, for example when videobloggers use eachothers
stuff, theres variation in how much attribution they give eachother.

4) Hypocracy and double-standards.

Moral ground is lost if videoblogggers have a lax attitude towards
checking the rights on material they use. o we even look at eachothers
licnses? eg I just looked at Ryanne's and it says NO DERIVATIVES! How
does that fit made to match the remix-culture attitudes that feature
in this community? Did everyone who ever remixed Ryanne ask permission
first?

Now I get the feeling that its the NON-COMMERCIAL element of most CC
licenses that people here are most interested in. Attribution and
derivative issues only seem to get talked about here when a violator
is also considered commercial. Well thats not what these licenses are
saying, they arent saying 'oh do whatever you like as long as you
arent commercial', everyone is supposed to adhere to all of the rights
granted in the license. OK, I know, its easier to just invoke two
little words, 'fair use', and overstretch this to act as a defense of
the individual. Simplify things down to the favoured 'good and evil'
way of seeing things/making decisions, the individual can do no wrong
and doesnt need to bother reading licenses, the commercial must follow
things to the letter. A nice simple attractive way to not have to put
any more energy into thinking about the issue, but bogus and flawed if
you ask me.

Dont get me wrong, in the case of Blinkx its fairly sure they are
breaking peoples cc licenses, their use of the material should be
considered commercial (though id only be 100% certain of that if you
had to pay to watch content, or their were adverts in the video). The
attribution issue is greyer cos they do provide links to original
authors RSS feed, which is better than nothing. They certainly break
the cc license by not displaying a copy of the license with the
redistributed work, but as I said earlier I feel some work is needed
by videobloggers to make their CC license terms syndicate along with
the content.

Then we get back to what to do about violators? I suggest that maybe
if theres a few of us who are interested in this stuff, we could join
together and use collective power to try to enforce some of this
stuff. However rather amusingly, taken to its most efecive conclusion
this sort of thing would see us acting sort of like the RIAA, which
leads us back to the obvious double-standards people have regarding
rights issues.

Hi Kevin,

There's a variety out there.  Free vlog sites provided by free video hosting companies here:
http://freemediaguide.com/free_hosting.html

I use my web serivce but creating a regular webpage and linking to videos located on a variety of other server sources.
http://www.thevideoqueen.com/blog.html

I also use blogger.com and link to videos on a commercial video host here:
http://www.drjoevitale.blogspot.com

Many vloggers who host their own videos on their own domains get them linked (or embedded with players) just by using HTML code.  You can create html for your own videos for free here:

2005-10-10 Thread Jayme
I am laughing so hard I am crying! This was the most hilarious video series
I have seen yet! It's too bad it's not a real vlog that I can subscribe to.
I bookmarked it the old fashioned way though. it's just too good to pass up,
but you may want to consider a real video blog with an rss feed. You'd have
an even wider audience!

Thanks so much for the wonderful laugh on this Monday morning :o)

I have tried a few searches from the material that they have copied
from us and while I would assume a high margin of error, I'm pretty
sure no audio scans have been transcribed. Al least I haven't
witnessed any sign of that feature yet.

[videoblogging] Re: Re: blinkx

2005-10-10 Thread Bill Orr
Blinkx is owned by Autonomy (www.Autonomy.com) or at least it was developed
by them. I use to work at Virage and Blinkx was developed by Autonomy to
show off the technology. Blinkx is using the Automony, Virage
(www.virage.com) and SoftSound software to index and search video files.
Suranga Chandratillake is listed as the CEO of Blinkx. He was the
operational CTO of Autonomy in the US. I don't know what they are trying to
hide but you can't find an address or phone number for Blinkx. Maybe it's
because they keep saying that it's a separate company but my guess is that
it is not. Autonomy is known for spinning off companies and pulling them
back in. They did the same thing with Dremedia (www.dremedia.com) which they
later dissolved after acquiring Virage.

Here's what's total bullshit about blinx to me (besides the

They are a commercial entity and they are republishing my content

[videoblogging] Re: blinkx

2005-10-10 Thread Kent Bye
Three thoughts on the blinkx issue:

[1]
What I wonder is why did two journalists get it so wrong?
Were the journalists complicit or just plain negligent?

If you want to investigate this further, then I would get the
journalists on the record for why they didn't vet some of their
reporting that now appears to be made up out of whole cloth.

[2]
Another point is that according to James Whittaker (the e-mailer to JD
Lasica --
http://www.newmediamusings.com/blog/2005/09/blinkx_a_citize.html),
Blinkx is NOT doing automatic audio transcriptions of material.

They're just using a normal metadata search, and NOT doing anything fancy.

Haven't personally tested this myself, but I'd be really surprised if
they were doing automatic transcriptions of the audio.

[3]
The other thing is the whole murky relationship with Autonomy.

Whittaker suggests that Autonomy is using Blinkx as a front because
their first search engine called Kenjin realeased in 2000 was complete
bunk.

Whittaker, "Maybe Autonomy is deceiving people because they are scared
of a repeat of their first attempt at web search, called Kenjin which
they released in 2000, saying it was going to be the biggest thing ever,
before it was shot down in flames as it didn’t work."

See this CNN review linked in JD's post, "I found that Kenjin did not
work as Autonomy promised."
http://archives.cnn.com/2000/TECH/computing/02/15/kenjin.search.idg/

Hmmm...

I figured I should comment on this since my name is in the subject. ;)

I think there will be space for both - or should I say - all kinds - of
aggregators. Look at what we've got today. There are use cases for each.
Desktop aggregators work great if you are going offline, traveling,
certain net connections, etc. Web based aggregators work great if you
are always online, use different computers, want to leverage
community/social aspects of a web site, etc...

We're only going to see more innovation in this space. (I hope!)

[videoblogging] Re: The backend

2005-10-10 Thread Bill Streeter
A lot of people are using either Blogger, Wordpress, or TypePad and
a few others. Pretty standard stuff for blogging. Many of the stand
alone solutions (not hosted sites like blogger) run on PHP with
MySQL (or some opensource flavor of an SQL database) on Apache
servers. That's a really general answer, but probably accurate for
*MOST* video blogs.

Not
sure if this is exactly what you mean.  An example I'm thinking of is

After I post the main video, I post the other bits as sort of DVD

Oh,

Korea's unique culture, the exciting lifestyle, and most of all, food.  I
joined to learn techniques to help my site run more smoothly, to find means to
generate more hits, and to find new interesting vlogs.  And if you look at

How do you feel about having a b-roll in video like some bloggers have
an "asides" category on their blog? A space on your site where you place the
little thoughts, the quotes, the small things that interest you; the little
details that might - in fact - just inspire you to create some of those more
full-fledged vlog entries? These b-sides of vlogging - how would they
work? Would it be within the same rss-feed as your main feed? Would it be a
different feed? How will consumers of your rss media feel about the more
regular vlog entries being mixed with little thoughts, quotes, glimpses of a
different life? Personally I would feel great about other vloggers including
some b-sides to their vlog-sites. Things that are not Supposed to be fully

[videoblogging] Yahoo! & Podcasting

2005-10-10 Thread courtwms777
I just heard on Fox News that Yahoo! is going to offer a special
search category for podcasting.

That's pretty cool, eh? :-)

(Don't know if someone else has already posted this here... if so,
please excuse the "old news").

[videoblogging] Adjusted description

2005-10-10 Thread petertheman
Hey all,
Just a notice:
I adjusted the description of this group a bit:
- added a link to the event calendar at wearethemedia
- focused the first paragraph on "it's for beginners"
- shortened the text a bit here and there.

Cheers!
Peter

[videoblogging] DLTQ 2.0, asides categories, stuff

2005-10-10 Thread R. Kristiansen

Hey all,

I haven't posted on this mailing list for some time, and there are also
hundreds of threads I have not even glimpsed at. For some reason I feel
this space has become too cluttered. I cannot even imagine how it then
will feel for many newbies, newcomers to this forum. I don't know - I
can only guess.

I am back from a vacation away from vlogging, so to speak. I went tired
of the way I was taking my videoblogging. I went tired of the trite,
the endless obsession with creating media.

DLTQ now goes into version 2.0 (mock reference to web 2.0) and it is
more about the connections, the pieces of information loosely joined,
and about re-mixing content that I have made myself, or others have
made. Bringing to the front new and old questions. Questions that we
have lost. Lost in the clutter.

I have a few questions about the asides category, and no, this is not
because I don't know how to google things, but I do want to raise the
issue in this arena:

How do you feel about having a b-roll in video like some bloggers have
an "asides" category on their blog? A space on your site where you
place the little thoughts, the quotes, the small things that interest
you; the little details that might - in fact - just inspire you to
create some of those more full-fledged vlog entries?

These b-sides of vlogging - how would they work? Would it be within the
same rss-feed as your main feed? Would it be a different feed? How will
consumers of your rss media feel about the more regular vlog entries
being mixed with little thoughts, quotes, glimpses of a different life?
Personally I would feel great about other vloggers including some
b-sides to their vlog-sites. Things that are not Supposed to be fully
formed sentences. But maybe that's just me :)

I use wordpress as my blogging tool for http://www.dltq.org - I would
like to create a hierarchy on the site. Where I - or a visitor to my
site - can promote media, or old or new vlog entries, to a different
section of the site. I have not seen examples of this being done in
wordpress - anyone have any examples?

Also, does anyone remember a good place where you can read up on how to
display for instance the last 5 posts from other rss-feeds on your
wordpress blog?

Otherwise, I send you regards from Norway. Viva la vlog!

best,

Raymond Kristiansen
