it is not "way different".so, tell me like i'm a 5 year old, michael.  what is the issue...  because it seems to me that your 2 points infer attribution concerns and are also speculation, which gets us nowhere at this point.

tricky, it is... right?like the fireant promo videos which i am guessing are people who dont use or never heard of fireant and were picked off the street  of course, like you that is just a piece of speculation.  but wouldnt that be dishonest too?
or maybe i can speculate on why fireant.tv doesnt link to other projects in this space since launching your new directory... blip does, mefeedia does, vlogdir does, vlogmap does, vb-universe does.  again, busy i know.  but this is where speculation can get nasty.
frankly, i am tired of hearing about it.  veoh heard the complaints and acted.  does apple do this?  any other company listen and act as veoh has done?  let's get honest, shall we?sull

No, its not about attribution.oh no?  i do recall you thinking i was somewhat nuts to not participate in sucking in feeds from
blip.tv as mefeedia chose to do.  now, maybe you didnt get to setting it up for fireant.tv, or maybe you decided i was right either way, make up your mind.
and you didnt answer my question.  do you have a problem with mefeedia having thousands of RSS feed that were not submitted by humans... thus creating, as you suggest and speculate, a false sense of an active and popular community?
like i said, i dont have a problem and i am glad that mefeedia exists.i didnt want to take that approach for vlogdir, but i think there is nothing wrong with doing this.i ask again, do you have a problem with mefeedia sucking in feeds?
what if mefeedia was funded or looking to land some investment money?i guess i am just trying to get your balanced opinion... and hoping that you are not putting down a potential fireant competitor.. like you recently did when you pissed on vsocial.

Hi Jeff

Rocketboom is not using WordPress but Movable type or MT as they say.
( see http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/)

I use WordPress on several websites and have about 250 templates but
nothing looks like RB.

Hey Jeff,You might try looking for "photo blog" Wordpress themes. Other than that you can modify most any theme to not include a sidebar and then set the number of posts that show on the main page to 1.

Hmmm, let's see. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that a bunch of 20, 30, and 40+ year old geeks think it's cool. If I'm not mistaken, the last time I checked that was a statistic that would pretty much make videoblogging uninteresting to anyone still in school.
Or more likely:Between school, homework, friends, boys, girls, sports, music lessons, etc, etc. when do kids have time to videoblog?-Verdi

[videoblogging] Advertise Your Vlog

2006-04-20 Thread blaknoiz67

Hi all,
I run a site call chartreuse (beta)  and I write about video blogging sometimes.
I thought it would be cool if I let some vloggers advertise their vlogs on my site.
All I ask is that it be less than 30 seconds and mention the name of my site  in the ad. That's it.
One of my readers already made one so you can check that out .
My site is not huge but gets a decent amount of readers . And I think this will be fun and others may start doing the same thing...

I'm talking about HTTP stats that would be known to the server serving up the content.
If Veoh has taken your content via RSS unbeknownst to you and is redistributing it from their servers as though you are one of their users who has opted in to the service (but you are not), then you would never know your content is being redistributed there and would have zero knowledge of the viewing statistics.

MN Stories is a perfect example of what I'm in the mood to ramble on
about, and an excellent example to those who will be inspired to vlog
for causes local and global.

Chuck, is the goals of MN Stories' community awareness or is it broade?
Is there a financial component (i.e., fund raising for community
projects, sponsorships, etc.) or is MNS strictly feed-the-brain?

Two things-

You might have to navigate through some parking lot walkways.

The ride should be about 30 minutes, and you'll either want to get off

both stops is not bad, as long as you aren't loaded up too heavy.

That's my two cents.

just a follow up on this meeting

some people said that the flashmeeting system prompted them for a
password when changing screen size

sounds like a bug with the software but you can get the password from
the meeting url

if the meeting is

http://flash.kmi.open.ac.uk:8080/fm/index.php?pwd=56bf97-4034

then the password is

56bf97-4034

flashmeeting can remember your settings and so you shouldn't have to do
this every time unless you like switching your view a lot :)

Paul,Hope some of the SF people chime in here, but I don't think you have to take a taxi in that I think the BART (subway) probably goes to the airport and I think I heard there is a BART stop very close to the hotel.
Of course, what do I know. In the Ozarks we have subway tunnels, but we  call them caves and the transportation is manual. Very glad you'll be coming, and really looking forward to meeting you!

Re: [videoblogging] Re: veoh

2006-04-20 Thread Joshua Kinberg

Its not just that the work is a derivative, or that its a full clip
rather than a "preview" -- the bigger issue for me is that Veoh used
vloggers and their content to make it seem as though they had a
growing and vibrant community, people who've signed up, agreed to
terms of service, and were participants in the Veoh community. This
was not true. They took people's content and made bogus profiles for
them. They forced "users" into an opt out situation when they had
never in fact opted in. This is dishonest.

Great cause, Chuck!  It's a shame citizen's journalism wasn't as big
back in 2000... then again, at least we got a great SNL episode out of
the whole thing.  After Alec Baldwin, Al Gore was one of the best

[videoblogging] Re: Can vloggers hack mountains

2006-04-20 Thread Chuck Olsen

Great thoughts.

FYI, I'm interviewing Jon Rawlinson about the Nata Village
blog/vlog project this weekend. Hopefully for Rocketboom,
or Human Wire. Or MN Stories, or anywhere really. :-)

Minnesota Stories sometimes dents molehills. Definitely
approaching things form the hyperlocal level, equally important
as the global. My goal is for it to be a place for otherwise unheard
voices. Most of the time it's just entertaining stuff around town,
but it's going in interesting directions.

One project I'm excited about is Citizens for Election Integrity.
Minnesota is going to audit elections to ensure accuracy in
every county through this nonpartisan organization. I'm going
to set up a vlog for them to get the word out and recruit
volunteers. I anticipate this will be the primary way people
learn about this issue and how they can help.

I think just about every non-profit could benefit from vlogging.
What better way to show the world what you're doing, what's
important, why you should care and participate?

[videoblogging] Can vloggers hack mountains

2006-04-20 Thread robert a/k/a r
Hey all,

The press appears to be cubbying peeps who make video (i.e., personal, documentary, comedy, etc.) and vlog it into types, which is not necessarily good or bad. I'm wondering if vloggers can leverage this tendency.

Also, as you know, I'm particularly interested in education and humanitarian projects and am curious how many vloggers have set their focus on such projects.

More, I tried to drum up support earlier this week for Jon's Nata Village

endeavour, and I don't believe a lot of vloggers have yet blogged about or re-vlogged the project though I did notice a few. Certainly a bit of press for such projects, not only Nata Village, has the potential to improve the finances, and in the Nata case that money, per the blog, goes fully to the village. If I'm wrong and a lot of you have participated by vlogging or directly donating I'll stand corrected, which I would certainly prefer.

Does anyone have insight into how many vloggers have focused in on and working towards a particular educational or humanitarian topics, I think it would be cool to help the press see that category, not only from the perspective of those in the category but for vloggers in general.

Wasn't vlogging going to be a tool to help change / improve the world? Wouldn't it help differentiate vloggers from those, who happen to be of great number, who just post entertaining video (not that I have anything against that, I attempt to do a bit of it myself)?

And speaking of saving the world, or at least the Internet, have a look at this, is there a possibility it can help?

Perhaps it's the fine weather here in NYC today, I'm feeling there's an opportunity to hack a few mountains out there. Can we make a list of those vlogging towards a non-entertainment goal, a new category for the press and for us?

FLV previews of content is a recent development, prompted by the YouTube envy, no doubt,

Andrew, why must you insist on not letting your head swell?
You should still buy 5 copies for your mom. Moms like that.

Anyway, you're going to have to butter *my* ears to push me through the doorway.

No particular reason, other than it feels good.

not at all?I mean cmon, you got to admit that it is kinda cool. who wouldn't be happy about getting some press, especially in a magazine that you yourself said you greatly admired. but perhaps using the metaphor as God as a stepping stone was a bit over the top...

Just to throw a bit of wood on the fire...I am noticing that 'videoblogging' is really starting to become a hot thing with these start upswhether they get what a videoblog is/can be or not.   It's getting attention, it's becoming a meme.
I wonder how many of these startups want to help videobloggers or really just want to cash in on the movement?Ideally it would be good if they could accomplish both...no harm in that.  If they can provide videobloggers with value and make a few bucks, bonus.

Have you looked at the binary bits.  They're not identical, they're
transcoded to Flash.  Even if your original was in flash, it's
transcoded again into flash of a different quality and bit rate.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: veoh article with "interesting" statements from the company

2006-04-20 Thread Michael Sullivan

I think the technology and probably Dmitry's experience in this space and with P2P technology is by far a larger factor than the amount of content and users that Veoh has or had.  People investing money are not usually ignorant to the core factors.  The fact is, Veoh can and now likely will become a serious alternative venue for independent media makers.  They have made it clear that they specialize in longer form higher quality videos.
Maybe not that enticing to some videobloggers who have no intention on creating 'more produced' and ellaborate video works, but looking forward it will be nice to have such an optional platform to utilize.
I can see you, Josh, making a brillian short film.  Something above and beyond what you have already created.  I can see you wanting to distribute a high quality version of it and not wanting to jump through the traditional hoops of the industry... and instead choosing to consider a service like Veoh.
Also, imagine all the filmmakers who are not bloggers.  Anything that gives them a new vehicle for moving out their content to the masses at no cost that is far from a bad thing!sull

I'm sure Veoh will/does provide statistics to it's users.I just cannot swallow an argument that puts P2P technology for independent media makers as being less significant than download statistics, especially when that P2P platform is also building a model to compensate media makers... financially and by giving them reach/exposure.

In my case, I'm commenting on the historical action-- Veoh's taken
down my stuff. I'm ok with that. I think the ideal solution would be
to offer an attributed, non-preview, non-hosted listing in the veoh
directory, but at least they're no longer infringing on any of my
stuff.

the only transcoding that was done and that was part of the issue were the video previews on veoh.com not the distributable originals via the p2p network. On 4/20/06,

Then they were hosting them and displaying them on their site with no attribution and under thier own license.
Apple provides no linkback facility in iTunes, which has also built in transcoding
for transfer of vids to the (very commercial) iPod.Apple does many things wrong but they're certainly not doing what Veoh was doing. If you search for me on the iTunes music store you will see a link to my videoblog (it says "website" with a little arrow next to it). Also the transcoding happens on your own computer. Apple isn't serving up any of my videos.
It's a huge difference.-Verdi joly>On 4/20/06, WWWhatsup <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:>Well, I have submitted my feed to all nature of aggregating sites/services including>DTV, and Veoh is the only one ever to have me put code in my feed

Re: [videoblogging] veoh article with "interesting" statements from the company

2006-04-20 Thread WWWhatsup

Veoh allows distribution through it's P2P network but, apart from that,
what transcoding was involved? It's the original file that gets cached and distro'd.

Apple provides no linkback facility in iTunes, which has also built in transcoding
for transfer of vids to the (very commercial) iPod.

[videoblogging] Re: Might be going to Vloggercon...(I hope)

2006-04-20 Thread Heath

I didn't think it was possible but this whole thread is making me
even more depressed than I am..late last week it looked like
I was going to be able to go and then in the last couple of
days.I don't see how I can make itI thought I had some
stuff lined up and like just about everything else that is going on
with me right now..it's falling throughstill an outside
chance but it is so slim it is almost invisibleI so want to
meet everyone and be a part of vloggercon but right now, it looks
like I have to choose to be responsible...man that just
sucks

[videoblogging] Re: Might be going to Vloggercon...(I hope)

2006-04-20 Thread littleblueriver7

Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. I'll just have to wait
another two weeks to buy a house...

I put my name up on the "I need a place to stay" list:
http://wiki.vloggercon.com/index.php?title=Hotels
but haven't gotten any responses. Anybody want to help?
Clearly the best situation would be to stay with a vlogger from SF
area but I everyone I've asked has a full place.
I'd be up for staying at a hostel but I'm not so sure that I'd like to
do it alone, as I may (if what I hear is true) be stumbling into bed
pretty late and "under the weather" - not the best situation if you're
alone in a open dorm...
Anyone, anyone.
