i think that the size of the viewership will be a big determinating factor in choosing one of these embedded player hosting sites to host video on...and i think that the size of the viewership is largely determined by the type of content permitted at the site.
i think that youtube is big because most of their viewership is there for porn/dancing girl and funny videos (bootlegged content or otherwise). people who want their videos viewed in the largest arena will choose a site like youtube to host it.
if yahoo has a policy that is as open as youtube, they will be able to compete. otherwise, they will never get the numbers that youtube generates. somehow, i'm not so sure that yahoo will be as open though. they have had run-ins in the past with chat.
i know that yahoo chat lost huge numbers when they clamped down on chat rooms and closed user rooms.i'm sure there will be some that will prefer to be hosted by other sites but, unless yahoo opens up in terms of content, i dont' see a mass exodus. mind you, i saw that they are also going to be a directory for off-site content. if they don't censor that content, it might help boost the number of viewers. hard to say what impact that would have on those looking for hosting services.
as for spam...is it spam to put your vids up on all hosting services or is it spreading your content around? not sure about the use of the word spam in this context...rss is definitely preferable to those who use it. unfortunately, the number of people using it is still quite low. i don't know if the majority of people watching online videos are concerned enough about it for rss formats to have an impact. i have three teenaged kids who are well aware of rss but opt for youtube instead. i have no idea why.

I don't necessarily think RSS is preferrable -- its just different.
With YouTube and other video portal sites you can browse around easier.
But, you don't get the same ability to syndicate. So for creators it
will eventually be limiting until YouTube and the other sites begin to
think beyond the web.

RSS will be built into your Tivo, iPod, cell phone, etc... many sites
and services today already support it and its only a matter of time
before it becomes pretty much de facto.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that RSS is not only about end users
viewing stuff in a News Reader application even though that is how
many of us experience it today. RSS is also used as connective tissue
behind the scenes of many current and future web services.

yes. it's those limitations that I am referring to when I say that it's preferrable. until it actually impedes user's in great numbers from viewing content, though, i dont' think it will have any great impact on sites like youtube.
as a viewer, i don't own a tivo, an ipod, psp or a cellphone so it doesn't much matter to me how the content is presented (although i absolutely can't stand autostart vids!)as a producer, however, i do care whether or not my videos are rss compatible and i prefer that they are. videobloggers might be more inclined to care about rss. i don't think it's particularly important to large numbers of video uploaders though...not yet, anyway.
many video hosting sites don't seem to be too concerned about it either and, imagine, they won't be until their uploaders/viewers demand it.On 5/31/06,

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Just look at what the normal user experience is... A user sees only a
small orange button that says RSS or XML or the square radio wave
icon. None of those are obvious to an RSS virgin. Most people browse
with IE, so even when they do get curious and click the icon, they are
taken to a page that is just code (hieroglyphics to most).

It is an absolutely horrible user experience. Where does it tell the
user to download an aggregator? How do they know to copy/paste the
URL into the aggregator?

I've been a web developer for 10 years and I was completely baffled
the first time I tried to use RSS. (Granted, that was when Bloglines
first came out and few sites had a feed.)

As for the video uploaders, most are using YouTube and/or MySpace.
Both those sites don't promote their feeds very well, which I think is
a sorry attempt to horde content. They rely on advertising, which
means they want people to visit the site and not syndicate it in an
aggregator.

I assume RSS adoption will increase when the masses upgrade to Vista.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Wired: Yahoo Video Mimics YouTube

2006-06-01 Thread Mike Meiser

On the subject of Youtube and those like yahoo who would follow in their footsteps. These sites have broken it down to lthe least common denominator... nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd. It's the race to the bottom as it weee. All the superficial characteristics of web
2.0 without the substance, the principals, the ideals.People will post their media at these places simply for the instant audience. But there is nothing more. It's disposable culture. We musn't loose site that it's all throw away media. It'll all be gone in a year or two, five? who knows... but do you really expect youtube to host it all for free for very long? And when they're done milking your media for it's value and ditch it, it'll be gone, because noone will have been able to remix it, revlog it, or host it anywhere. Unlike great
web2.0 services which drive traddic to the community (i.e. digg.com) all traffic is inbound to youtube... Other services drive traffic to the community... youtube sucks traffic and the media up. It's no community player. It is the center of it's own universe, and when it ends gone so too will be all that culture. But heh, maybe we can rent it from them on DVD eh?
But don't let this stop you from using youtube. In fact we should use it. By all means post to it. Why not, it's free, but keep in mind it's got no archivability, no portability, that it's contrary to remix culture... so post to your vlog first... then use youtube strategicly, smartly, evilly, the way they intend to use you. Post media purely to drive traffic to your vlog. Use it to advertise for yourself. Put the your shit on youtube, put the equity and time and good stuff onto your vlog.
Use them like they would use you. Companies that try to pull one over on their customers never last for long, they underestimate their customers. The only way to deal with such business practices is to use them the way they would use you. Take it for what it's worth, if it's worth anything, and throw it away when you're done. I ussually stand contrary to this disposable culture, especially when talking physical goods, but this is virtual goods for one, no lasting damage other to our own culture, besides there's just no other way than to take youtube for all it's worth.
Youtube is for shit, it stands contrary to everything we stand for... it's popularity is unnerving, but did we really think we were going to change everything overnight? That people would buy all our principals of interoperability, portability, remixing, archivability, and so much more. This crazed rush to get video on the web has proven the time was right, we should applaud ourselves for our part in igniting that, but it doesn't disprove the value of our principals and we should be vocal about it. Don't be afraid to speak your mind even about those sellouts like
Boingboing.net that have sold out their audience and their creative commons and remix culture principals in promoting such crap. This service that locks up and monopolizes the creativity of it's own participants.
This overnight mediatization of the web has happened so quick that youtubes and other businesses who's halmark is their greed and/or their web 1.0 business strategies like lockin have had the opportunity to stear the masses into new corrals, new box canyons of media. like the .com boom the land is now to fertile for those with quick dollars in their eyes to not jump in. But it doesn't mean this is where it'll stand. Youtube has one the first fight for market share. They still haven't made a dollar... let's stick it to them, so that when they weild their lock-in like a weapon we're ready with our message, our services and our principals like interoperability, openess, and portability to make converts out their customers, previously naive to their games.
A little ancedote... back when I first got into the web in 1993-1997 we all had such high expectations for the internet... academicly speaking... we had no reason to think the web browser and web page would be it Mosaic, the first web browser was just another application, much like youtube. People were working with far more interactive technologies like flash... technologies like VRML for creating 3D worlds... very much like the Metaverse invisioned in Neil Stephensons' Snow Crash... except for practical issues... some of us dreamed of rich channels of media... rivalling TV and radio then the innovation sort of seemed to stop and slowly became fixated on this stupid most boring of metaphors... pages aka. web pages.
Basically we were all sad that things seemed to have reverted a little back to the most basic and boring metaphor of the last 500 years. We all sighed and gave up on or vrml, and watched as multimedia formats like flash were relegated to the sidelines. The world became fixated on the page. Completely unspecial but to think we'd failed would have been criminal... as the saying (admitedly my saying) goes... the world of the future will be nothing that you

Re: [videoblogging] Recording audio itnerviews

2006-06-01 Thread Jan McLaughlin
I've been using Griffin's iTalk mic that sits on top of the iPod to great effect.

Great because iPod's native sample rate is low (8000 khz) and you need to practice a bit to understand positioning relative to how loud the speaker talks and background noise, but for ease-of-use, I've been really happy with it. It's unobtrusively small, can be mounted to a belt clip for that fast record-on-the-fly you-get-only-one-shot-at-getting-a-record-of-this kinda situation.

Workflow. It automatically syncs with iTunes, where you can metadata your heart out. It outputs .wav files that I import to Audacity where I cut out the annoying spffft you get on hitting record among other editing things.

Disclaimer: I work recording fine audio for a living so embrace the imperfection of this recording setup because of its ease, imperfections and limitations.

Best,
Jan

[videoblogging] overview of Pew report on broadband access and online publishing

2006-06-01 Thread Andy Carvin

Hi everyone,

I've just posted an overview of the latest report from the Pew
Internet American Life Project, which focuses on home broadband
access in the US and who's posting content to the Internet. Broadband
access is up across the board, with middle income family access
growing at the fastest rate. English-speaking Latinos are now almost
as likely (41%) to have broadband at home as white families (42%),
while African American families lag a bit behind (31%). Income and
education levels continue to remain major barriers, though growth was
seen at all levels. DSL access has become more affordable, though many
more households cite speed as their reason for getting broadband (57%)
compared to the lowering of cost (3%), suggesting that more people are
willing to pay for it in order to gain the benefits of high-speed access.

To me, though, the most interesting part of the report focuses on
online content publishing. Overall, 35% of Internet users - 48 million
people - have posted content to the Internet. Broadband users are more
likely to post online content than dialup users - 42% versus 27%. This
is especially true of bloggers and people who manage their own
websites. While an average of eight percent of Internet users publish
their own blog, 11% of broadband users had blogs, compared to only
four percent of dialup users. And amazingly, lower-income users were a
bit more likely to post content online than higher-income users, while
whites _lagged_ behind African Americans and English-speaking Latinos
- 32%, 39% and 42% respectively.

You can download the 26-page report here:
http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/184/report_display.asp

My overview of it can be found here:

What kind of wood do they burn to smoke it with?

In Missouri we call smoked meat Bar-B-Que, which is pork, beef, or

I BELIEVE it is actually steamed (or perhaps that's just how they

Basically, people could install the plugin and whenever a video link is added, either as
an

feed
with associated metadata, description, and thumbnail. Publishers can then go in and

Great because iPod's native sample rate is low (8000 khz) and you

the speaker talks and background noise, but for ease-of-use, I've been
really happy with it. It's unobtrusively small, can be mounted to a

Workflow. It automatically syncs with iTunes, where you can metadata

cut out the annoying spffft you get on hitting record among other
 editing things.

Disclaimer: I work recording fine audio for a living so embrace the
imperfection of this recording setup because of its ease, imperfections

Without any software or other mods the 20GB (8/2005 purchase) model
iPod records with the following specs:

bit rate = 128 KBps
sample rate = 8000 kHz
format = wav

Bill, the notion that there's a way to increase the sample rate is very
exciting indeed. The 44.1 kHz to which you refer is not bit rate but
sample rate, e.g. how many times per second the record head passes
over the recording medium.

128 KBps is very good for our purposes, but without a better sample
rate, it might as well be 64 KBps, kinda thin and doesn't hold up
through editing well.

Look forward to more information about this.

2006-06-01 Thread LeanBackVids.com

It can be hard to decipher jokes from text... I'm a business-minded
(evil?) person and I read the sentence literally.

The forwarded email is only slightly ironic. Freevlog may be giving
away free information, but the site is successful due to its
high-quality screencasts. Notice there is no tutorial on
screencasting. The ability to create a crisp looking screencast
represents the main barrier to entry. Giving away the secrets of
screencasting runs the risk of someone else starting their own
tutorial site.

I'm planning to build out screencast tutorials for how to use VlogMap,
but if that got expanded into basic vlogging tutorials it would be
competing directly w/ Freevlog.

That probably would not be seen as a communal move by Freevlog, even
though others may come to the site and see it as spreading
free/helpful info.

For the record I have no plans of doing so, but I can see why some
sites like to keep some secrets.

Anyways, I apologize for my half of the miscommunication and thank you
very much for emailing me the screenshot of settings.

Re: [videoblogging] Fw: RE: (ISF) Yahoo's video streaming service

2006-06-01 Thread Joshua Kinberg

I never really understand this... a lot of people think they *need* a
separate hosting solution for their videos. But for organizations that
already pay for a web server, this is generally not the case. There's
no reason they can't host videos themselves on their own servers that
they already pay for. Blip and YouTube are nice in that they make it
easy for people who don't have a server... typically people who use
Blogger, MySpace, or a very limited shared server situation.

Perhaps you are correct, Nathan -- there is confusion over the word
streaming and the perceived need for a streaming server when it
comes to video. For some reason people don't have this streaming
mental image when it comes to audio. MP3s entered the public
conciousness with Napster -- they are meant to be downloaded. This has
been reinforced with iTunes/iPod. Now, streaming audio usually refers
to something more like an internet radio station or live broadcast.

Blip and YouTube are not streaming services. They are hosting services
that offer easy uploads and progressive downloads (not technically
streaming).

I've been playing a lot with various video streaming systems recently
 and
have a bunch of different thoughts.

First, I should acknowledge that I haven't played with Yahoo's service,
 so I
can't comment on whether or not it is really worth it.

Most of the stuff I've seen recently has been focused on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com They provide free hosting provided you given
 them
certain rights to the videos. For the political campaign I'm working
 on,
http://www.nedlamont.com , volunteers have been making videos, posting
 them
on YouTube and then embedding them in blogs. For a good example, check
 out
 http://www.myleftnutmeg.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=1420

For most people it streams nicely within the context of the
 organization's
website (or blog as in the example above). There are problems with it
stopping and starting when people view it from a slow connection.

Meanwhile, other people have been highly recommending http://blip.tv I
tested them a little quite a while ago, and had mixed feelings.
 However,
they've made major improvements since then and should be seriously
 looked
 at.

I've written a bit about other video sharing services in my own blog,
 check
 the video section
 http://www.orient-lodge.com/taxonomy/page/or/14

There are three entries specifically about sharing videos as well as
 several
others that touch on the topic. They mention services like ClipShack,
vSocial, Castpost as well as a link to a great article sometime back on
 TechCrunch.

 I hope this helps.

As an aside, I am organizing a citizen filmmaking workshop and festival
 at
the Media Giraffe Summit at UMass Amherst on June 29th. Check out
http://www.mediagiraffe.org/filmmaking/ If you can make it please do.
 If
you have ideas for good panelists or good videos to display, please let
 me
 know.

is thinking of doing this with Dreamweaver-based site. Some of their
 concerns are:

 1) Will web surfers be move smoothly from the nonprofit
organization's web site to the Yahoo-hosted video, and then back to
the organization's web site, without losing their look / feel /
 branding?

 2) Are Yahoo's video streaming services a good value for the money?

 3) Do users of Yahoo's video streaming experience much in the way of
delays or downtime as they move between the web site and the video
 streaming?

 4) What other services are comparable?

Great because iPod's native sample rate is low (8000 khz) and you
need to practice a bit to understand positioning relative to how loud
the speaker talks and background noise, but for ease-of-use, I've been
really happy with it. It's unobtrusively small, can be mounted to a
belt clip for that fast record-on-the-fly
 you-get-only-one-shot-at-getting-a-record-of-this kinda situation.

Workflow. It automatically syncs with iTunes, where you can metadata
your heart out. It outputs .wav files that I import to Audacity where
 I
cut out the annoying spffft you get on hitting record among other
 editing things.

Disclaimer: I work recording fine audio for a living so embrace the
imperfection of this recording setup because of its ease,
 imperfections
 and limitations.

That's interesting.

So you could imply that the only place they are actually going to
display your videos is on Yahoo!, since if they put your videos on
DVD's they'd have a hard time removing them once you delete your video

Vaudiville consisted of many second rate, amateur acts with off color
jokes, low brow and imitation for the general masses. Services like

the successful and talented performers like Charlie Chaplin, W.C.

can host all three domains, I have a small monthly bill and they allow

Re: [videoblogging] overview of Pew report on broadband access and online publishing

This report affirming much of Eben Moglen's remarks
about 'prosumerism' at the recent isoc-ny meet, which I've put
at http://punkcast.com/964/ and that I can't over-recommend.

Prof. Moglen talks about how wrong many major media efforts to
co-opt the net into traditional modes of consumerism have been,
and points out Murdoch's purchase of MySpace as a major capitulation.

I remember explaining the 'Net to people, in the early days, - 'It's not like
television, it's more like the telephone, a global conference call.

Prof. Moglen gets positively gleeful as he notes that Bill Gates, hung up
on client-server in a P2P world, still doesn't get it.

To me, though, the most interesting part of the report focuses on
online content publishing. Overall, 35% of Internet users - 48 million

Yeah, it's listed on the Vloggercon wiki here:
http://wiki.vloggercon.com/index.php?title=Saturday%2C_June_10th

But, they ask you to confirm your attendance in advance here:
http://clicktvparty.wikispaces.com/RSVP

I'm used to either getting an open invitation and not replying or
getting an exclusive invitation and RSVP-ing. This is just foreign
and uncomfortable to me! Perhaps it's from working with diplomats too

just a side notehow would one do a screencasting tutorial?when getting info for people about snapz pro i often have to take screen shots *of* snapz pro itself, which is do-able because macs have hot keys in the system to do that.
but i dont know how you would make a screencast vid of a screencast appunless you pointed your camera at your screen.which would look crappy probablybut it would work i supposeoh yeah, and i dont look at anyone making tutorials as competition.

RE: [videoblogging] (ISF) Yahoo's video streaming service

2006-06-01 Thread Aldon Hynes

As the person who wrote the message on ISF and who has been lurking here,
let me explain my thoughts on why streaming is important and why some people
may want seperate hosting setups.

When working with a nonprofit or political campaign (and my focus right now
is primarily on political campaigns), you want to make sure that your videos
are viewed by as many people as possible. I cannot tell you how many emails
I get from people who are all upset because they can't get a 20 meg video to
display quickly on their box running Windows 95 on a dialup connection. The
ability to start viewing the video before the whole video is downloaded is a
very important feature. It has nothing to do with people somehow stealing a
video. Most non-profits and political campaigns I work with want their
videos stolen and virally distributed. I've been pleased that people have
taken videos from projects I've worked on and posted them to places like
YouTube, blip.tv, etc.

As to why you might want to host your videos other than your primary site,
well there are some simple economics here. Nonprofits and poltical
campaigns are often financially constrained. They want the cheapest
solution they can get. They often get accounts that are limited to as
little as a couple gigabytes of bandwidth a month. If they can have their
videos distributed without it hitting against their bandwidth alotment, that
can help a lot. If you have videos that are being viewed over 50,000 times
a month, it would be much nicer to have someone else pay for the bandwidth.
Likewise, if your traffic spikes, e.g. you release a video and you get
thousands of hits in the first hour, you want to make sure that the location
that is handling your videos can handle these sort of bandwidth spikes. If
you can get your videos distributed on sites like Yahoo, YouTube, Blip, etc.
it may well be worth it.

Another aspect to consider: To the extent that you want to encourage your
supporters, volunteers, etc. to create their own videos, you may want to
have them post to video sharing sites for other reasons. It relieves
administrative burdens that moderating and approving videos can produce, as
well as the concern about having to tell a volunteer that their video
doesn't meet the requirements of the organization, or the problem of an
inappropriate video getting on to your site.

An interesting cross post from another Yahoo group I'm on for non-profit
tech. This message discusses Yahoo vs. YouTube vs. Blip.

Note the use of the word streaming, a word that often comes up when I
talk about videoblogging with people outside of this sphere.
Much of the worlds entire perspective and expectation of video is still
based on a web 1.0, big iron streaming model (aka Real, microsoft
Asf/asx, etc) They don't know anything else - they think if you can
download a video file you are somehow stealing it.

Subject: Re: Fw: RE: (ISF) Yahoo's video streaming service

They are hosting services
that offer easy uploads and progressive downloads (not technically
streaming).

[videoblogging] Re: Wired: Yahoo Video Mimics YouTube

2006-06-01 Thread greg

Wow, i just posted a vid to YouTube, and i can't believe the drop in
quality!
I made an .mp4 using H264 in Quicktime 7.1, 320x240, 550kbps vid and
80 audio...
its a short video, so its only 5.7mb
Whatever codec they convert it to (?) looks awful and washed out...
certainly larger than 320x240...
So there must be a way to get better quality on YouTube...
by uploading a movie saved in a certain codec or size to begin with?
(so the double compression doesn't totally destroy your data)...
They have a limit of 100mb per video, so hmmm
Anybody have any ideas?
And what about Yahoo's upload specs / codecs?
thanks all!

That's interesting. I guess its best to upload uncompressed, or
compress as little as possible if you're going to upload to a service
that converts and re-compresses the videos.

[videoblogging] Flash Video question for Actionscripters

2006-06-01 Thread Joshua Kinberg

This is a question for the Flash developers out there...

I'm creating a little side-project Flash application that plays Flash
Video files (FLV) from a playlist.

I've run into a documented bug in FLV versions prior to Flash 8 where
the duration metadata is incorrect. This screws up the time progress
bar and seeking functionality of my video controller. There must be a
trick to get the duration for older versions of FLV since its obvious
that other Flash video controllers can do this. Any advice from the
Actionscripters out there?

Here's some documentation of the bug (scroll to the bottom):
http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=FLV_Video_Compression

and here: http://www.sti-media.com/blog/archives/000111.html

This documented bug is quite common since most video upload sites
automatically compress with Sorensen (Flash Video 6/7 codec).

I've used a tool called FLV Metadata Injector to correct the FLV metadata:
http://www.buraks.com/flvmdi/

This does work, but I'd rather be backwards compatible with Flash Video 6/7.

Hello Everyone...
Quick question, I bought my Dreamhost account last

couldn't find any info on renewing my account...

For those of you who have used Dreamhost for a couple

account, I would hate to wake up on July 26 and find
my site missing in action...

Could have mailed Dreamhost, but I know someone on
here would be able to help...Thanks...

on a sad note, I am not going to be able to make it
San Franciso...however, for those of you who follow my
vlog...here is a sneak peek into up and coming B-S...I
am going to Vietnam in August...oh boy!!

in a new home:

we're still tuning up, but c'mon over and kick the tires a bit.

Nathan,

You can go into dreamhost control panel and click the billing tab on
the side bar. It should be self explanitory from there.

I have an external FW 800 hooked to my G4 Tower and it
works as fast as the internals. Love it, never tried
an external FW 400.

[videoblogging] Re: Flash Video question for Actionscripters

Josh,

I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your problem but I would like to
know more about the project. I've been looking for a Flash player that
will load FLV files from a RSS feed and play through them. Any chance
that this project will have this functionality?

I've run into a documented bug in FLV versions prior to Flash 8 where
the duration metadata is incorrect. This screws up the time progress
bar and seeking functionality of my video controller. There must be a
trick to get the duration for older versions of FLV since its obvious
that other Flash video controllers can do this. Any advice from the
 Actionscripters out there?

Here's some documentation of the bug (scroll to the bottom):
 http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=FLV_Video_Compression

 and here: http://www.sti-media.com/blog/archives/000111.html

This documented bug is quite common since most video upload sites
automatically compress with Sorensen (Flash Video 6/7 codec).

I've used a tool called FLV Metadata Injector to correct the FLV
metadata:
 http://www.buraks.com/flvmdi/

This does work, but I'd rather be backwards compatible with Flash
Video 6/7.

I agree. I've been using Dreamhost for a few years now, the last
year or so for my vlog and I really dig them. I love blip as well
but haven't been using them much lately because my Dreamhost account
serves me well. If you do decide to use Dreamhost I set up a coupon

They give me a kick back for referals but that code allows me to
 share it with the referal.

Yes, exactly. It currently supports FLV videos from RSS and XSPF
playlists. But the videos must be Flash 8 (or have proper FLV metadata
injected) until I can figure out a work around for the issue mentioned
in this thread. Unfortunately, all the docs on Adobe simply suggest to
either re-encode the videos or inject the metadata...

I'm having a hard time believing that there is just no other work
around. Come on, Adobe!
