Most of the time most humans only want to be seen.

It must be difficult to be evolved to the next step where you actually
see others. Very lonely and painful indeed.

You're drawing conclusions that can be supported by text.  You are
infering the motive of manipulation and making the demand of making a
list based on that inference.  Such inferences go beyond the
limitation of text messages like this -- assumptions are often made
about people that go beyond what is written.  And why often it is
requested that a videoblog be made on a subject of discussion instead.

[videoblogging] Re: The Shallow Nature of Video Blogging

2006-06-02 Thread Gena

It is the stories that we tell that are important. It is the attempt
of one person trying to convey narrative to another. That has an
spiritual value. It can have a base level one too.

It doesn't matter if the stories are profound or silly. Meaning
changes over time anyway. It is important that we communicate to those
that come after us that we had a particular view of our world - "here
it is, this is what I see."

It is no different that the griots sitting around telling the tales of
the ancestors or the cave paintings or the etchings in pottery. It is
no different that what countless writers, artists and future-sighted
people do.

That is how we (humans) build communities - by knowing each others
stories.

Fine

I disagree.  A living human being is objectively true as alive.  The
meaning a human being develops relates to their purpose in being alive.

Evidence studying the neocortex shows planning as a natural occurence

There's significant creative proof that human beings are capable of
much more than parasiticaly living off each other.

The editing and narration of that piece is propagandizing a point of
view on the war.  Statements like "...the most dangerous country in
the world." could probably be disproven.  One can compare the genocide
in the Darfur region of Sudan and other locales.

Has anyone every really compared performance between FW400 &
800?  I have an 800 drive plugged into the 800 port on my G5, and
I honestly do not see any better performance than with my other 400
drives.  Seems to me there's a bottleneck elsewhere that doesn't
let the entire system really take advantage.  Instead of calling
it Firewire 800, I think they should have called it Firewire
430nc.  nc stands for "new connector."On 6/2/06, Jen Simmons <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Why two Firewire 800 ports on the card, instead of just one? Probablysimply because the room to fit them both was there and it was just as
easy to do two as it was to do one. Plus, sometimes it's just easier /fast to plug a second drive into the computer -- ie: I'm working agroup of people in our studio these days, passing drives back and forth
and need to get into one quickly and then pass it back... I might throwit into the second port on the laptop instead of the back of my drive,to prevent jarring / disconnecting the cables on my drive. If thesecond port wasn't there, it might not matter... but since it is... And
yes, as someone said, not all devices have two ports, so you'd have toget a hub -- which is a pain in the ass on a portable system that youare moving all the time.As for the slot itself, I've also seen gigabyte ethernet cards, and
serial ATA for the new slot.http://www.expresscard-info.com/What I WANT a videocard for that slot, so I can hook up two externalmonitors at the same time -- or rather, two projectors so I can do cool
multi-projector things with MAX-MSP / Jitter and my laptop in liveperformance settings. The project I'm working on right now is a fourprojector gig, and so we've loaded up a Quad PowerMac with videocardsto give us the ability to send separate signals to four projectors and
a monitor at the same time, but for smaller versions of this same kindof work... being able to use a laptop would be ideal. Any thoughts onwhether or not we'll see a videocard? It sounds like there will not be a compact flash card reader, however,
because the 34mm slot is physically too small to fit flash cards.People are bummed out about that.jenjenSimmonshttp://www.jensimmons.comOn Jun 1, 2006, at 10:18 PM, Michael Verdi wrote:

adding meaning to things is what humans do. do you think it is possible to make media free of interpretation, or subjective meaning?an example:to me, my father's 8mm films hold endless amounts of meaning (I never knew him, and now i can feel a connection, and know something more about him)
to you they may seem like crappy videos of boring people walking in a lake or leaving for prom... they are "meaningless" to youTo me those videos are extremely significantto the rest of the world, nothing would change if they didn't exist.
meaning, interpretation, significance, it is all subjective. but the meaning intended by the author, the meaning that i bring to something, or the meaning you being to something have the same "worth"

i dont think this makes my or anyone's work less significant.
but you are right
if these bombs attacks were to happen in the USit would be the

huge memorials, exhaustive news coverage, policy changes.
but its not happening here.

more revealing video made available more often could change that.

Nope, it doesn't work with FLVs encoded by YouTube (bottom of
http://utilities.cinegage.com/vpip-test-page/ ).  However, it works
with FLVs encoded by blip.tv
(http://www.cirne.com/vlog/2006/04/14/pixars-acquisition-by-disney-509/ ).

Try downloading a video from YouTube and tell me if that works for you.
Use http://keepvid.com to get the FLV from YouTube.

I'm using the MediaDisplay control with the associated Media class.
Although the documentation says the total duration is only available
when the FLV completely loads, I'm abile to get it at the start of the
FLV load in the Media.progress event.  This seems to work on Flash 7.2
and 8, though I haven't thoroughly tested it.

Here's a sample of the progress event:

flvListener.progress = function(){
...

  if (nPercentLoaded > .01 && nTotalTime <= 0) {
    nTotalTime = [MediaDisplay instance name].totalTime;
  }
...
}

Let me know if this works.

Correct, I don't think FFMpeg will be supporting On2VP6.
But, you can get the On2 Flix Exporter and run that on your server.
Not sure how expensive it is. I'm pretty sure that's what most of the
upload-your-video-here sites are using.

Yes, I'm pretty much combining Jeroen's FLV player and his MP3 player
that handles RSS/XSPF playlists.

I'd like to support FLV, and that means both Flash 7 and Flash 8 (and
Flash 6?? not sure if FLV was part of Flash 6).

I'm using NetConnection and NetStream. Currently getting duration
metadata through the NetStream.onMetaData method. Older versions of
FLV simply return "undefined" because they don't properly have the
metadata inside. Hence the need for the metadata injection.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Flash Video question for Actionscripters

2006-06-02 Thread Joshua Kinberg

Hey Will,

This is great info!
Just a couple notes... this is not part of the FireAnt desktop
application, but just a small little web app I'm making. I don't have
Flash Media Server (seems expensive for a small little side project
like this).

Re: FLV support in FireAnt, this is definitely something we wish to
improve. The Mac version of FireAnt supports FLV playback, but it
could be done in a much better way (we have this duration issue with
FireAnt on the Mac too). On Windows, FireAnt plays Flash through the
Flash OCX, but it does not yet handle FLV. This is something we plan
to address soon. I've done some research here and think I have a good
starting point for that problem on the C++ side. Perhaps we should
also join the Adobe Developers Network.

Thanks!

-Josh

If your app is a desktop app, then write your own  very simple parser that would figure out the duration of a FLV file and build it  into your app.  Since FLV is an open format (see http://www.adobe.com/licensing/developer/), this  should be simple and quick.  In fact I know it's both since a guy at  VitalStream wrote exactly this to figure out the duration of user-uploaded files  (they have the same problem of missing metatdata from older encoders) and it  only took him a morning to create. I doubt they would release that code, since  its company specific, but if you approached your Fireant C++ guru, he may have  as quick an answer.

designs that you can customize if you know Flash) and am currently
on my second design, which still requires some tweeking. But you can
see it in action on my vlog. Everything seems to run fine on my Mac.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: question for Macbook Pro owners

2006-06-02 Thread Jen Simmons

Why two Firewire 800 ports on the card, instead of just one? Probably
simply because the room to fit them both was there and it was just as
easy to do two as it was to do one. Plus, sometimes it's just easier /
fast to plug a second drive into the computer -- ie: I'm working a
group of people in our studio these days, passing drives back and forth
and need to get into one quickly and then pass it back... I might throw
it into the second port on the laptop instead of the back of my drive,
to prevent jarring / disconnecting the cables on my drive. If the
second port wasn't there, it might not matter... but since it is... And
yes, as someone said, not all devices have two ports, so you'd have to
get a hub -- which is a pain in the ass on a portable system that you
are moving all the time.

As for the slot itself, I've also seen gigabyte ethernet cards, and
serial ATA for the new slot.
http://www.expresscard-info.com/

What I WANT a videocard for that slot, so I can hook up two external
monitors at the same time -- or rather, two projectors so I can do cool
multi-projector things with MAX-MSP / Jitter and my laptop in live
performance settings. The project I'm working on right now is a four
projector gig, and so we've loaded up a Quad PowerMac with videocards
to give us the ability to send separate signals to four projectors and
a monitor at the same time, but for smaller versions of this same kind
of work... being able to use a laptop would be ideal. Any thoughts on
whether or not we'll see a videocard?

It sounds like there will not be a compact flash card reader, however,
because the 34mm slot is physically too small to fit flash cards.
People are bummed out about that.

Does this mean that flash 8 is basically unproblematic with respect to
duration and scrubbing?

I've just started working flash and flash video and love the
flexibility of it. The sad thing is that ffmpeg does not transcode to

There is a lot of nice options, and there is a basic playlist support. It should be easy to ask the developper to add a rss support or to do it ourself as it is open source.Bertrand

Done, where's the meat? :o)

In other news: There will be a prize of MONTREAL SMOKED MEAT for the most
innovative idea proposed during the Interactive Videoblogs panel (Sunday
afternoon)! Unless MONTREAL SMOKED MEAT is really good in which case there
will be a private, invitation-only tasting after the click.tv party
(invites available on eBay).

[videoblogging] Jet Set Show - New videoblog for the kid in all of us

2006-06-02 Thread Zadi

Hey all, some of you know I've been working hard on a new videoblog
show for the past couple of months... and it's finally up and running!

It's a videoblog for kids (and the kid in all of us) with new stuff
every Thursdays and Fridays (interviews, d.i.y. workshops, sketches,
etc). It's something I've been wanting to do for a very looong time
and I've gotten awesome support from Andrew and Amanda. I love kids,
working with kids, video, and just plain being a kid, so what better
way to celebrate that than through vlogging?

Okay, so go to http://jetsetshow.com and let me know what ya think...
I'm excited, it's so much fun to do! :)

Best,
Zadi

Dreamhost by a long shot.  DH offers over 1,000 GB per month versus
the 120 GB max on VizaWeb.  Not to mention the cost of those... $8 vs.
$30.

[videoblogging] Re: Flash Video question for Actionscripters

2006-06-02 Thread Enric

Which is the lowest version of Flash you want to support (7 has
several versions, I think the most recent is 7.2)?  And how are you
loading the FLVs?  Is it with NetConnection and NetStream or the Media
class?

RE: [videoblogging] Re: Flash Video question for Actionscripters

2006-06-02 Thread Will Law

Josh

1. There is no magic workaround. If the duration is missing
from the metadata of an FLV, then your only options are a) inject it yourself b)
use FMS to query the file length. You cannot get or even estimate the
duration from the NetStream properties that are exposed, other than by playing
it to completion.

2. If your app is a web app, then keep a local copy of FMS
running and use it for nothing but querying the length of FLV files on your
SAN.

3. If your app is a desktop app, then write your own
very simple parser that would figure out the duration of a FLV file and build it
into your app.  Since FLV is an open format (see http://www.adobe.com/licensing/developer/), this
should be simple and quick.  In fact I know it's both since a guy at
VitalStream wrote exactly this to figure out the duration of user-uploaded files
(they have the same problem of missing metatdata from older encoders) and it
only took him a morning to create. I doubt they would release that code, since
its company specific, but if you approached your Fireant C++ guru, he may have
as quick an answer.

Cheers

Will
