2008-08-04 Thread schlomo rabinowitz
When I get back to SF this week, I'll start to figure out how to make a
tracker for moneythong.com
I see it as a tracker for underground/independent visual work. Figured if
the Internets didn't have one of these yet, where people can go through
lists of artistic torrents, then now is the time!!!

Maybe, like Jackson mentioned, we put up Broadcast Machine to help people
figure out and use bittorrents. (we teach and entertain!)

I just need to find someone who knows how to create and maintain a tracker
that can teach me the ropes. Should be able to find that somebody -- if you
know anyone, send em my way!

Only problem, now it's searchable. I wanted it to be underground,
distributed via email and bittorrent. You'd have to know somebody who

So far nobody has blabbed that it's public. So my youtube fans are

I see another leecher sucking it off my computer. It feels great not
 to be hosted anywhere.

So if anybody wants my new online video you can do it the fun way and
send me an email. [EMAIL PROTECTED] John%40totalvom.com Or you can just
 search for
Information Dystopia and grab it off Demonoid.

This new video is a scorcher. I call out some of the corporate

You can use uTorrent to set up your own private tracker at your own
domain name or IP address.
I'd be happy to help if you need it, but it should be super easy.
Details here:
http://filesharefreak.com/tutorials/utorrent-make-your-own-bittorrent-
tracker/
When people create a torrent file, they would create it with the
Tracker URL:
http://moneythong.com/yourport#/announce

This covers the tracker part of the process, but not the index/
sharing of the torrent files. You can then share the torrent files
privately by email, or create an index that's either public or
accessible only to members, or use something like Pownce.

Hello,

We make a series of videos called SUPPENDAPO (Supplies for the Pending

automated phone line: 206-666-2621. Call the number, leave a message, and we
make a video based on the random things you order.

The latest video is below. It's one of the best calls we've ever received.
If you're at work, you may want to use headphones.

I highly recommend putting our number in your address book, and dialing it
late at night after several drinks. It's all automated, and you can erase
the message if you don't like what you said. No pressure.

2008-08-04 Thread Rupert
If it were me, I'd build it on Wordpress. There's a catalog/
directory tool for Wordpress called Scriblio.

http://about.scriblio.net/

It was designed by a team of librarians to be an open source OPAC -
Open Public Access Catalog for libraries.

But if you look at it, it basically turns Wordpress into an editable
catalog with pictures/screenshots and all sorts of other data.

It'd be searchable, cataloguable.

It's free and it's supported by grants and used by a few libraries,
so chances are it'll be well-supported as Wordpress gets upgraded.

And Wordpress, obviously, has the benefit of so many developers and
plugins - it keeps getting better.

You can allow people to register as Contributors and upload their own
files. Set different levels of permissions.

And you'd have a variety of feed options - Wordpress makes a main
feed and one for each category.

[videoblogging] Assistive Hiking Experiment

2008-08-04 Thread Caleb J. Clark
Brought a camera/monopod along for a hike recently. My uncle is in a
wheelchair and I guess I was thinking of him not being able to hike,
or those in the city.
HiRes 800bps/30fps Flash: http://www.techtrek.tv

HiRes h.264 2000bps/30fps.
http://blip.tv/file/1133050?filename=Techtrek-E17NorthPackMonadnockMountainExperimentInVirtualHiking595.mov

My uncle liked it, he said the sound at the top of the mountain was
the best. It's much different then the sounds he's heard for most of
his life. There's a sense of height and far off wind that he said he
could feel even after all the added noise and such from the
mics/compression/output, etc.

my underground tool of choice was always KDX (haxial.com).
it's been rewritten and KDX2 will be released at some point (or not).

is BitTorrent overkill for this though? i think it might be. unless you

I envision a bittorrent tracker only for original longish form video

anyone actually friend each other in their trackers? I dont, seems weird).
Awesome and easy to set up, where creators create to dialog with each other

I own moneythong.com, sounds like a good name for an Underground Video
Bittorrent tracker site. Does someone know how to make one of these?

And yes, I'm inspired and serious.

[videoblogging] distributive media monitor / capturing systems mini personal update

2008-08-04 Thread noel hidalgo
since coming back from my around the world journey, i've now found
myself working for a kick-ass non-profit that promotes remixes and
mashups www.remixamerica.org . as we navigate the murky ocean of
online video, i hope all y'all don't mind if i ask a few questions.
since all y'all have been extremely helpful in my endeavors, i PROMISE
that what ever help the videoblogger community gives Remix America, we
will ensure our work gives back to the videoblogger community. it's a
promise i pin my name on.

so Remix America is going to the DNC / RNC (that's short hand for the
two American political conventions). while we are at both conventions,
we will be mashing up interviews, speeches and the like... we'll be
sharing our content with a consortium of citizen-journalists and
online video producers - theUptake.org, EpicFU, Denver Film School,
and we're talking to a bunch of other outlets this week and next...

any-who, we are currently trying to figure out a soup-to-nuts
solution for the DNC/RNC where people from around the world can
digitally record on-air content and then upload it to an asset
management for all of us to use as source material. ideally we will be
working with a bunch of volunteers capturing on-air political
pundants doing their thing and saying their hootenanny. while
conceptually, this is easy to understand, the team at Remix America is
a bit perplexed on a soup to nuts solution.

first, as experienced video editors do you have a preferred workflow
for digitizing on-air content?

second, let me tell you about our goals...
- we'd like to have 6 to 10 volunteers plugging in out of the box
PVR/DVRs into their computers to digitize on-air content.
- at the end of the capture, the MPEG formatted video would be
uploaded to a central asset management system (we have access to a
video asset management system).
- citizen journalists / remixers / mashup artists can then login to
asset management system to view / download raw content for their
remixes / mashups / etc.

on the product front, things seem to be fairly straight forward.
- on mac, just grab an eyetv 250 plus http://tinyurl.com/6a5h37 .
plug, record, play, and upload.
- on windows, soup to nuts solutions seem to be a bit more diverse.
according to my research, SageTV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SageTV
contains all the components for an out of box solution we desire.
does anyone have any other windows based recommendations?

how you can help us all...
1. what's your preferred workflow for digitizing on-air content?
2. express interest in being a media monitor... the first catch,
you'll need to have a cable connection. second, tell me if you have
equipment or if you'll need equipment.
3. do you have any tips that can help us?

cheers.

[videoblogging] Re: H264 encoded movies

When will the players from blip.tv or vimeo.com will natively support
H.264 content? They have been promising it for ages but what's holding

Yes, some flash players can play H.264 encoded movies - it doesn't

You can watch these on Mac, Win and Linux (inside the flash player)

[videoblogging] Fwd: nettime breakthrough for open video on the web

2008-08-04 Thread Kath O'Donnell
perhaps of interest to some here?
is anyone doing much with OGG files?

-- Forwarded message --
From: Florian Schneider
Date: 2 Aug 2008 22:05
Subject: nettime breakthrough for open video on the web
To: nettime-l

It was my last day at ISEA 2008 in Singapore and we were supposed to
have a dinner with noborder/no one is illegal activists and the
panelists of the bordercrossing theme, when jaromil came down the street
smiling all over the face: I have great news he screamed. Firefox 3.1
wil support OGG Theora!

In other words: This is most likely the breakthrough for open video on
the web! OGG THEORA is the only open source video erncoding suite. It is
available for general use after the bitstream format for Theora was
frozen Thursday, 2004 July 1. http://theora.org

Native support in Firefox means that end-users on proprietary platforms
like windows or mac do no longer have to install additional software in
order to watch OGG encoded video. If you want to publish a video you
can just use the video tag like for any image. There is no need for
additional javascript or flash!

Slashdot writes:
http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/07/31/1752206from=rss
Ogg Theora support for the HTML5 video tag is in the Firefox 3.1
nightlies. Theora is the only video format allowed on Wikimedia Commons,
so Wikimedia people are pushing Wikipedia readers to download a nightly
and try it out. Break it, crash it, report bugs, get it into good shape
and nullify Apple and Nokia's FUD the best way possible. They may have
gotten the words 'Vorbis' and 'Theora' removed from the HTML5 spec, but
the market will tell them when their browsers are sucking.

Christopher Blizzard wrote in his blog
http://www.0xdeadbeef.com/weblog/?p=492 Mozilla is committing to
include native support for OGG video and audio in its next release that
includes support for the video element tag. (Very likely to be Firefox
3.1 if there no huge change in course.) The code landed for ogg support
last night. I suspect that the effects of this will take a long while to
be felt but it's a great first step in bringing open video to the web by
delivering it to a couple hundred million people around the world.

At KEIN.ORG and in many related projects (like the Dictionary of War)
we have been insisting on the use of an open video compression format
for many years now. Despite all the complaints about additional software
installations it seemed crucial to us to give proove of the
possibility to
publish digital video without the licensing and royalty fees or vendor
lock-in associated with proprietary formats.

In summer 2003 we started the open source video platform V2V
http://v2v.cc which is entirely based on open source code. Ralph
Giles, the maintainer of the THEORA project, was one of the speakers at
NEURO -- networking europe http://neuro.kein.org in Munich in
February 2004. Some months later Jan Gerber has developed ffmpeg2theora
http://v2v.cc/~j/ffmpeg2theora a simple converter to create Ogg Theora
files.

I am looking forward very much to a wide range of new projects and
initiatives which may come up now. For example jaromils video mixing
software FreeJ seems a great tool with huge potential: http://
freej.org

Let's build an open video alliance!

very best,
florian
