I'm not asking the moderators to read my mind, just to consider how they do their job.Clearly, the old hands on this list value a wide open style of moderation. But other opinions about this style of moderation do exist. To speak up engenders the condescension (learn to filter) and disrespect (overseers...squelch speech) that makes this list such a tough place for outsiders.
Moderation is about tone, certainly. But it's also about keeping discussion on topic. I fail to see what threads like Just before you start belitting me again have to do with videoblogging.

Re: [videoblogging] Four Eyed Media Monsters

2006-02-22 Thread Joshua Seiden

The point of the recent Four Eyed Monsters discussion seems to have been how to use the Internet to promote your more traditional film, which I'd argue has jack to do with this list.

[snip]

What do you think?---I've been putting video on a blog since October '05, and have been on this list since about the same time. Does that make me a videoblogger or not? Frankly, I don't care. I'm interested in exploring rich communication, and the way that communication changes according to the medium employed. The intersection of video and blogs is interesting to me as a medium, and I enjoy experimenting with it to see what is possible.
Recently, I've been struggling with a direction for my blog. When you point a camera at your face and speak into it, you have nowhere to hide, except within yourself. The technique is so personal. So while I started the blog to explore the communication possibilities of the medium, I've had to confront the personal nature of the work I'm producing. My most recent post is about the difficulty of being personal in a medium that threatens to reveal all. The post was a direct (and very clumsy) response to FEM, especially the incredibly inspiring Episode
3.5, which did a beautiful job of exploring the difficulty of the creative process, the difficulty of confronting personally revealing material, and was itself incredibly open and personal. It moved me deeply. I'm trying to do work that moves me. I'll leave the naming of that activity to others.

I'm glad to see people responding to this idea. I'm seeing a couple of
people have started adding videos to Wayfarer, which is very cool!

One clarification: I was hoping that we could all add our videos to ONE
map, instead of having lots of little maps. I think it will be really
cool to have all of our videos presented next to one another. Imagine
selecting some address and seeing three different perspectives from
three different people.

Right now, the map will be thin, but perhaps over time, our work will begin to rub shoulders...

Thoughts?

[videoblogging] block by block video

2005-12-16 Thread Joshua Seiden

I'd like to invite you all to help create a collaborative videoblog neighborhood guide.

I've kicked it off here: http://wayfaring.com/maps/show/2721

A few weeks ago, Randy Wicker shared an idea to create a video guide to
our cities, towns, and neighborhoods. I thought, why not? I found a
site that allows you to create community maps, and I've created one
and linked to a few of my more place-based videos.

A couple of thoughts:
1. Right now, I've made no attempt to be guide-like in any way. I've
just linked to some videos that I think give a sense of place. So it's
more of an evocative guide than a factual one. But who knows how/if
this will evolve?
2. This seems like an obvious extension of vlogmap. I love vlogmap, but
since it only maps entire vlogs not individual posts, it didn't seem as
if it could accomplish the same thing. Perhaps someday...

So...do you know something about a place? Add it to the map! (Just get
yourself a free account on wayfaring.com, then edit the map.)

I hope you'll all participate and/or share your thoughts.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Matching music to video?

2005-11-22 Thread Joshua Seiden

Does anyone know of any book or internet resource that doesn'tjust give free music but which suggests certain music (free or otherwise)to convey
emotions like sadness or tension or even joy, etc? I'm sure such a thing exists and I just have to find it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the way music works depends a lot on
the images on top of it. Somthing that's sad in one situation could be
funny in another. So any reference work that suggests some type of
absolute feeling delivered by a peice of music is likely to be of
limited value.

This idea of the context-dependent way we respond to music (and other
elements) is one of the things that really interests me, and I've been
playing with it on my vlog.

For example, in this post of mine, I took what could have been a fairly
saccharine set of images of me and my kids, and contrasted them with
some fairly gruff music. I think the contrast is what makes it work.
(At least, I think it works.) But it's not like everything contrasts:
the music set the tempo for the piece.

http://more3.blogspot.com/2005/11/tag-at-guggenheim.html

One of the things that makes music pleasurable is the way it plays with
your expectations--often by using contrast and contradiction. I talk
about that here:

http://more3.blogspot.com/2005/11/annotation-roll-um-easy.html

On the other hand, in this one there's no contrast, because I wanted to treat the subject without irony:

Re: [videoblogging] Re: My hellos

2005-11-15 Thread Joshua Seiden

What puts me off is that those client apps do not do justice to the variety of media that can be combined in any particular post - they concentrate 'too much' on the video. I realise that statement may
sound paradoxical, but I don't really want a single medium to dominate the delivery of my digital stories.

This is a really intersting post Christian. One of the reasons I started videoblogging (about a month ago) was that I was frustrated by the text-centric nature of the blogosphere, and frustrated by the way RSS readers decontexualize the content of a blog.

Many in the web community view RSS as a boon for users: Some folks claim that with RSS, users now have complete control of their experience of content, and can consume and package your content to suit their needs.

My perspective is perhaps less rosy: RSS users can see some of your work, but in a presentation context controlled by the RSS reader. This changes the exprerience--maybe for better, maybe for worse, but certainly changed.

I set out to start a multimedia blog to explore the idea that when you present content in a given context, the content itself is changed when you change the context. And though I was thinking multimedia, the path of least resistance with the current tools led me to a video blog. Nothing wrong with that. But it's not a multimedia blog.

A multimedia blog would not bias one medium over another, because the readers and agregators and social bookmark managers and tag managers would see into the content in a deep way. They can't do that now, because of the infrastructure that's emerged to date.

For example, take a look at my post called Annotation. http://more3.blogspot.com/2005/11/annotation-roll-um-easy.html In this post, I took an MP3 of a song I like, imported it into a movie, and used the titling capability (of iMovie) to present a textual commentary about the song that runs as the song plays.

It's encoded as video, so of course the search engines have no idea what's going on in the clip. Another file format would allow the underlying MP3 to expose it's metadata--when you search for this song or the band, search engines could find the post. Similarly, another file format could expose the text in the titles sequences that I used (as a hack) to provide commentary.

The point is that if we were really building a storytelling medium, we would conceive of the building blocks in a different manner. But the video blog--as cool as it is--is only secondarily a storytelling medium.

Re: [videoblogging] anyone used a canon powershot A520?

2005-11-06 Thread Joshua Seiden

I've been using a Canon PowerShot SD400 to shoot my recent vlog entries. I use the standard settings (640x480 @30fps) but I render it at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Judge the results for yourself here: http://more3.blogspot.com

Everything was shot with the SD400, except the first two (talking head) entries.

I have a 512mb SD card in the thing, and it fills up quick--somewhere around 3-4 minutes of video.

Thanks,

I'm interested in the video quality for 320X240 15 FPS setting. Anyonehave a sampleon the web?
I'm thinking this camera might work for the teens i'm gonna teachvlogging to. It's cheap, bigger than ultra compact cameras (which Ithink is good---harder to drop and less tempting to steal), and has anAV out. Clips are limited to 3 minutes each, but I see that as a
positive too. What I don't know if the video looks acceptable.
