[videoblogging] Re: job for videoblogger

2007-03-21 Thread Heath
*Bachelor Degree mandatory Great, just great now not only can I
not get ahead in the corpatre world because I don't have a degree,
(was busy going to war and learning life leason's first hand) but I
can't vlog for a living for a grass roots campaign because I don't
have a @[EMAIL PROTECTED] piece of paper. just great.

My wife works for an organizantion here in Cincinnati
www.cincinnatiworks.org and we (they) are working on the very issue
of poverty, she doesn't have a degree and a few on the staff don't.
and they are doing a damn good job of fighting poverty one person at
a time. People in poverty don't need a piece of paper, they need
hope, and they need to learn it and they need to learn that they can
break the cycle and they need to hear from people who have done it
and continue to do it, one day at a time. And you can do that
without a piece of paper.

And just to be clear I am not dismissing the work involved to get a
higher degree, my beef is for something like a vlog I need a
degree. I mean honestly how could having a degree in this situation
make me a better vlogger or help communicate to the masses better?

I don't have a degree either Heath and I've gotten a couple of jobs in the
past that said they required a degree. I just applied anyway and showed them
in the interview that they weren't going to find anyone with a degree who

Yeah. I saw that, and thought the same damn thing, Heath. I went to

could laugh - the irony of linking videoblogging, poverty and
specifying a mandatory degree is pretty absurd, so maybe they're just

[videoblogging] Re: job for videoblogger

2007-03-21 Thread Steve Watkins
Often find the whole charity business pretty obsurd, especially with
charities that reach the size and atature, and use the same PR, as
corporations.

I imagine there are whole sectors where a degree is still the norm,
and well I dont know so much about this stuff really, Im hoping to
learn more when I visit old uni friends, one of whom works for a
charity and the other in government.

Education has a powrful historical link with what responsibilities you
are allowed, who is allowed to touch the levers of various important
institutions and fabric of society ironing machines.

Here in the UK class mobility has ground to a halt again, and higher
education will become more entwined with class and wealth again. No
matter all the hype, our leaders have the habit of having gone to the
best schools, where they are surely indoctrinated with the confidence
that they are the future rulers. Doesnt seem so different in the USA
from what Ive seen. Yeah sure anybody can become president, right,
thats why the last race was between 2 skull boners.

Oops there I go ranting again

Cheers

Steve Elbows

I'm with you Heath on this one. I think Verdi's advice is sound and if
you are interested in the job to give it a shot. Make a demo movie for
them.

I've had that happen to me many times. I had the knowledge and
practical know-how. Didn't have the degree. I would get turned down.

My feeling is they will hire someone who has a degree who will do a
google search for videoblogging grab enough lingo to bs the
interview and then try to figure it out after they get the job.

Might be a few lurkers doing that just now for corporate M$M.

2007-03-21 Thread francisco_daum
That's a great opportunity for someone who wants to help poverty out.
I think vlogging is something you don't have to come into the office
for either. If I didn't have a full time firefighting career in NYC,
had FCP 5 skills, and perhaps a journalism course somewhere I would
give it a try. I have a BFA in Painting Drawing that I paid for
myself in 5 years of college. Paid in full by doing three years in the
US Army. For someone with college bills, rent, and a normal life
though, I think it would take some good back up from mom pop, doing
anything in the arts.
