The distributor is Digital Classics and it was produced by West Park Pictures, but I'm not having luck finding contact information for either of those companies. Re: [Videolib] documentary films on radical social movements
Hello Matthew, Zeitgeist Films has a number of documentaries that might fit your proverbial bill: I'd HIGHLY recommend our latest doc: Let the Fire Burn: On May 13, 1985, a longtime feud between the city of Philadelphia and controversial radical urban group MOVE came to a deadly climax. By order of local authorities, police dropped military-grade explosives onto a MOVE-occupied rowhouse. TV cameras captured the conflagration that quickly escalated—and resulted in the tragic deaths of eleven people (including five children) and the destruction of 61 homes. More info: https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film.php?directoryname=letthefireburn Also: !Women, Art, Revolution: An entertaining and revelatory “secret history” of Feminist Art, ! Women Art Revolution deftly illuminates this under-explored movement through conversations, observations, archival footage and works of visionary artists, historians, curators and critics. More info: https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film.php?directoryname=womenartrevolution Paul Goodman Changed My Life: Paul Goodman Changed My Life immerses you in an era of high intellect (that heady, cocktail-glass juncture that Mad Men has so effectively exploited) when New York was peaking culturally and artistically; when ideas, and the people who propounded them, seemed to punch in at a higher weight class than they do now. More info: https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film.php?directoryname=paulgoodman Trouble the Water: Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, this astonishingly powerful documentary is at once horrifying and exhilarating. Directed and produced by Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, Trouble the Water takes you inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen. The film opens the day before the storm makes landfall—just blocks away from the French Quarter but far from the New Orleans that most tourists knew. Re: [Videolib] Is Viewing a Movie on an aggregator a Copyright /piracy issue?
I am a little confused since I honestly don't watch stuff online but if I understand this correctly the patron is watching an illegal copy from an illegal source. I think it is aggregator who is trying to skirt the law by saying they don't actually host the title but the person who watches it is actually going to illegal link so again if I am understanding this has even less of a legal defense than the linking site. I think the short answer would be there is no legal way to watch an illegal copy. If you watch say a copy of popular Hollywood film in theaters online there is basically no way it is legal. I use this as the most obvious example and the one most likely to get you in trouble. Realistically this happens possibly millions of times a day but I don't understand why the patron would think it was legal. Highly recommended...This film reminds us that governments and industries can exert a lot of influence over individual citizens, even perhaps to the extent of manipulating facts.--Educational Media Reviews Online ...a relevant purchase at a time when hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is on the rise and its safety is in question. --Library Journal [E]xamines the environmental effects of drilling...this involving program portrays both sides of a complex issue and is a definite discussion prompter.--Booklist UNITED STATES OF AFRICA Revisit the great figures of Black consciousness and their struggles in the 20th century in this portrait of an empowered, youthful and politicized continent, refusing to be cast in the role of victim. STATUS QUO?: THE UNFINISHED BUSINESS OF FEMINISM IN CANADA Through the lens of childcare, abortion rights and violence against women these three short films examine the feminism in the 1960s and now. Re: [Videolib] documentary films on radical social movements
Hi Matthew, Women Make Movies has some titles you may want to consider: The Feminist Initiative http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/pages/c745.shtml A film by Liv Weisberg http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/makers/fm722.shtml The Feminist Initiative reveals the passion, pitfalls and promise of a diverse group of women working to establish the world's first feminist political party in Sweden in the spring of 2005. Even in one of the most gender-equal societies in the world, the advancement of women's agenda within the patriarchal establishment requires a revolution. Beginning from the innovative and inclusive decision to elect three party leaders rather than one, the film charts every trail-blazing step (and misstep) of the Feminist Initiative (F!) from their energetic start to the climactic moments of their inspiring, celebrity-supported rally. Grrrl Love and Revolution: Riot Grrrl NYC http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/pages/c828.shtml A film by Abby Moser http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/makers/fm817.shtml Fed up with the calcification of punk into a male-dominated, misogynistic and increasingly mainstream movement, the birth of Riot Grrrl inthe late 1980s brought together feminism and pop culture in an empowering, noisy union. The angry music of Riot Grrrl bands such as Bikini Kill and Bratmobile became a creative outlet to confront issues too often silenced in the media: rape, domestic abuse, sexuality, racism and female empowerment. Riot Grrrl created a feminist subculture which made its members active, front and center participants in the alternative punk scene. Filmmaker Abby Moser was at the heart of the NYC Riot Grrrl movement, filming them between 1993 and 1996, creating an invaluable archive for students learning the history of feminism. Interweaving contemporary interviews with archival footage, this documentary examines the role of Riot Grrrl in launching third-wave feminism, and changing the face of women in music for future generations. Guerrillas In Our Midst http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/pages/c327.shtml A film by Amy Harrison http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/makers/fm190.shtml GUERRILLAS IN OUR MIDST presents a savvy exploration of the machinations of the commercial art-world during its boom in the 1980s, and brings the Guerrilla Girls to the screen. This anonymous group of art terrorists has succeeded in putting racism and sexism on the agenda in the art-world since 1985, and their witty and creative tactics have changed the face of political and cultural activism. Interviews with key figures in the Manhattan art scene, record-breaking auction sales, exhibition openings and interviews with the Guerrillas Girls themselves combine to highlight how the myth of the heroic male painter is perpetuated. Africa Rising The Grassroots Movement to End Female Genital Mutilation http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/pages/c762.shtml A film by Paula Heredia http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/makers/fm742.shtml Every day, 6,000 girls from the Horn of Africa to sub-Saharan nations are subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM). With fierce determination and deep love for their communities, brave African activists are leading a formidable, fearless grassroots movement to end 5,000 years of FGM. An insightful look at the frontlines of a quiet revolution taking the continent by storm, this extraordinarily powerful film is one of the first to focus on African solutions to FGM. It may be too personal and essayistic, too European, too epic and wide-ranging, or it may provide just the historical perspective the professor is looking for: in my opinion no documentary on radical politics can match Chris Marker's A Grin without a Cat (1977), on the turmoil of the 60s and 70s, in scope and ambition. At the very least it provides opportunity for discussion of May '68, if you want to go there. http://icarusfilms.com/new2001/grin.html For something more current, though I personally found it a little disappointing, The Square, about events in Egypt, is streamable on Netflix. NO, but if a borrower notes a problem with a disc it is sent to our Preservation unit for inspection / polishing, etc. ONLY if it is determined to be irreparable is it then sent to me to determine the need for a replacement copy purchase, and availability. IF a title were determined to be unavailable for purchase we would invoke Section 108 provisions to make a copy, borrowing a playable disc to do so. This has not occurred with DVDs (yet) Again, any input would be very helpful.
