Re: [Videolib] pornographic films in the Library collection?

Way back 15 years ago, I was finishing my MLS with a culminating project
looking at the video purchasing patterns of Ohio public librarians
related to the MPAA ratings.
Basically, I found that while R rated films was the largest group of
videos being released, PG and PG-13 were evidenced in far greater
numbers in library collections.

X and NC-17 were virtually non-existent.

Behind the Green Door was an early feature porn film that created a big
stir. It featured the Ivory Soap Girl, who went on to act in one of
David Cronenberg's early horror films Rabid. The film does have some
social significance but I can't comment much on it since I have never seen
it. It is an important film in the history of porn.

Thanks for your kind email Matt. I am never offended by listserve

Re: [Videolib] pornographic films in the Library collection?

2014-11-18 Thread Matthew Gallagher
Hi Maureen/All,

Sorry for the late response and I don't want to add any fuel to the fire, but
feel the need to comment on something more procedural.

As someone who has been responsible for cataloging what many would consider
explicit material (I will not comment on the vast and highly subjective range
of sexual and violent explicitness one encounters in film of all ratings), I
asked that an informal, internal policy be instituted that gives the employee
the choice to opt out of working with those materials they are particularly
uncomfortable with or catalog the resource by the container instead of fully
cataloging the item in hand (ie, watching the credits, etc). We have also
decided to either forego authority control or limit the number of 'added
contributors' if pseudonyms are used. Finally, if someone is fully cataloging
the materials in house, I'd recommend purchasing a monitor filter so that the
random passerby won't catch a glimpse of anything they may consider
inappropriate.

Hope this was helpful. If anyone has further questions, they can contact me off
list so that we can give this group conversation a rest.

[Videolib] Listserv etiquette and update to vrtlists page

2014-11-18 Thread Gisele Genevieve Tanasse
Videolib-ers,

Over the years we have all benefited from many a lively, and occasionally
heated, discussion.

Since yesterday, I have been contacted off-list by several subscribers
(librarians and distributors alike) who are profoundly disappointed and/or
intimidated by some exchanges that have been interpreted as critiques or
personal attacks on specific librarians' curatorial practices and/or
character.

I have never had such a response to a thread before, and while there are
clearly some opposing and varied viewpoints here, I think we can all agree
that we have reached a tone heretofore not seen on videolib. There are
folks who are afraid to respond to posts-- and folks who have decided to
leave us because of a lack of collegiality in communication.

We have always included a sentence in the videonews subscription statement
reserving the right to revoke subscriptions in the case where the intent of
the list or general listserv etiquette is violated-- I have added such
language to the videolib subscription statement (please see
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/MRC/vrtlists.html).

Please note that name calling, personal attacks and impugning an individual
librarian's (or distributor's) ethical and professional values will not be
tolerated on this forum. I do reserve the right to revoke subscriptions--
it is not a power I take lightly-- and one I hope to not have to use.

Please never hesitate to contact me on or off list with feedback,
commentary, concerns-- especially those of you who may be considering
jumping ship. We need your voice and perspectives.

given the rights issues I am surprised anyone carries it.

I am curious though is it common for more than one company to have the same
titles for streaming? I know sometimes rights are split by use ( one
company carries it as part of larger collection and one arrange streaming
of just that title for a fixed period) but did not know more than one
company would be able to license same rights.

Subject: [Videolib] Listserv etiquette and update to vrtlists page

Videolib-ers,

Over the years we have all benefited from many a lively, and occasionally
heated, discussion.

Since yesterday, I have been contacted off-list by several subscribers
(librarians and distributors alike) who are profoundly disappointed and/or
intimidated by some exchanges that have been interpreted as critiques or
personal attacks on specific librarians' curatorial practices and/or character.

I have never had such a response to a thread before, and while there are
clearly some opposing and varied viewpoints here, I think we can all agree that
we have reached a tone heretofore not seen on videolib. There are folks who
are afraid to respond to posts-- and folks who have decided to leave us because
of a lack of collegiality in communication.

We have always included a sentence in the videonews subscription statement
reserving the right to revoke subscriptions in the case where the intent of the
list or general listserv etiquette is violated-- I have added such language to
the videolib subscription statement (please see
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/MRC/vrtlists.html).

Please note that name calling, personal attacks and impugning an individual
librarian's (or distributor's) ethical and professional values will not be
tolerated on this forum. I do reserve the right to revoke subscriptions-- it
is not a power I take lightly-- and one I hope to not have to use.

Please never hesitate to contact me on or off list with feedback, commentary,
concerns-- especially those of you who may be considering jumping ship. We
need your voice and perspectives.

Re: [Videolib] who is distributing the Eyes on the Prize streaming ?

2014-11-18 Thread Randal Baier
Jessica, I wouldn't know the answer about multiple vendors owning distribution
rights, but I have come across some examples where the filmmakers are marketing
as well as a licensed distributor.

given the rights issues I am surprised anyone carries it.

I am curious though is it common for more than one company to have the same
titles for streaming? I know sometimes rights are split by use ( one company
carries it as part of larger collection and one arrange streaming of just that
title for a fixed period) but did not know more than one company would be able
to license same rights.

Thanks for your kind email Matt. I am never offended by listserve
comments. My concern was about the issues. Censorship really pushes my
buttons. I am working in a public library now and have to worry about
this
all the time but really more from my administration. I keep a file of
reviews (and any other worthwhile information) on films that I think I
could be challenged. Bring 'em one! Best of luck to you.

   Hi Doug,

Thank you for your response, and I'm sorry if it seemed like I was
attacking you. I kept my language neutral and intentionally didn't
mention
anyone by name because I didn't want it it seem as if I was pointing
fingers or scolding. But I see my intentions went awry, and if I
offended
 you I apologize.

We agree on one thing though, and that is I no longer want to be a part
of
this discussion forum. So I will unsubscribe and leave it to you and
 others to carry on.

 Best wishes,

BULLSHIT I did not attack Darby or Maureen personally. I attacked
what they did. What they said. They were wrong. If you don't want to
have discussions then don't bother hanging around here. You Matt are
attacking me and I am sure you would not have the balls to say that to
my
face. I am not a bully at all. I am just stating my opinion. If
that's
not OK then let's just not even have this conversation or any on here at
all. Librarians are the worst of censors. And they do it all the time.
This should be an issue that is dear to everyone in the profession. It
should not be tolerated. We should be here to support in any way we can
people who stick their necks out and make the right decision. Not to
support the wrong decisions. I think that in both cases neither
Maureen or
Darby would have received any grief if they made the purchases.
