As a filmmaker, I find it astounding to think any real money could be gotten
for your county/state by going through this kind of process.there are so few
filmmakers who actually make a real living out of just that (and into
figures enough to make a tax bracket difference) that this seems pretty
ridonculous.I hope negative press wakes them up.

2011-06-10 Thread Rachel Gordon
Hey folks!

For the first time, Passion River Films will be exhibiting at ALA and we
look forward to seeing you all in New Orleans!

Some of the more recent titles to be available for viewing at Booth 3462
include:

Houston We Have a Problem: Step inside the energy capital of the world, to
hear the hard truth about oil, straight from the Texas oilmen themselves.

InGreedients: Ride along on this culinary roller coaster as Registered Nurse
and filmmaker David Burton finds out from cornucopia of leading researchers
and the most respected scientists and health care professionals in the world
just what partially hydrogenated oil is and what zero grams of trans fat per
serving really means.

Music By Prudence: This Oscar winning film give us a heart-wrenching look at
life in Zimbabwe, where disabled babies are often killed at birth. Follow
the story of how Prudence and a band of people with disabilities triumph,
and gain acceptance, over seemingly insurmountable odds.

But we also encourage you to take a look at our website before you leave for
New Orleans and drop us a note with any requests of our films that you'd
like to see when you stop by our booth. Please email Mat Levy at
m...@passionriver.com with your interests.

A little more about Passion River:

various notable film libraries and institutions. Their deep catalog

Am helping out a few more films while attending ALA next week:

Fatal Promises (www.fatalpromises.com <http://www.fatalpromises.com/> ) - In

Hey folks - you've probably answered this before so I apologize if this is a

adaptations courses)? Do the faculty you work with care if the original

I was thinking of the computers and robots in Woody Allen's Sleepers. There
is a bossy computer in a Prisoner episode, "The General" I think. Benign
computers are harder to come up with. There is that uncanny valley thing
that skews narratives away from it.
Benign computer techs, though, i.e. humans who interpret computer
information to people, are pretty common. But I guess you would call that
"the good geek."

Hi

I served as consultant for this enterprise in its start-up phase. I think
their list of titles is interesting, albeit a bit uneven and off the
beaten track for mainstream Asian/Asian American studies. I believe
Rachel Gordon (a member of this list) is currently working with
APF...maybe you can contact her.

I'm currently trying to persuade Stephen Gong at the Center for Asian
American Media to hook up with an established streaming provider (ASP?)
THAT would be a real coup!!! CAAM's list is absolutely essential, in my
book, for any institution with interests in Asian American history and
social/cultural issues and events.

I've always been a fan of Hellraiser and Hellraiser 2, though after that the

28 Days Later was pretty impressive

[Videolib] VHS donations?

2011-10-26 Thread Rachel Gordon
I know this is going to sound crazy as everyone on this list is involved
with DVD, streaming, and other diverse modes of delivery, but I have to try.

My nephew is going to a small private elementary school in northern VA.
Since I'm involved with educational media, I was asked to go to their
library and see if I could help with adding/matching materials to their
curriculum. It turns out that they don't even have a DVD player and can't
get the acquisition of one approved. The newer teachers are expecting to
highlight their content with media, but the administration of course thinks
it's "leisure" and the sweet librarian is trying very hard to make everyone
happy. It makes me wonder how rampant this type of situation is.

I'm donating a DVD player, thanks to the National Media Market giving them
out with registration a couple of years ago. PBS is actually looking to see
if they have any tapes left lying around. I know A&E destroyed any they
had. If you know of any source that might still have some lying around that
they'd like to get rid of (for K-8) I'd really like to hear about it.

On a happier note - Michelle Obama visited my high school a couple of weeks
ago!

Best,

Rachel

Re: [Videolib] VHS donations?

2011-10-26 Thread Rachel Gordon
Yes, because all they have right now are VHS players. I am going to donate
a DVD player, but for an entire school to use 1 DVD player that has to be
checked out of a library I don't think is going to enough for the amount of
usage. plus, I don't expect that anyone will donate DVDs because they are
commodity that are current in mass circulation/demand.

Sorry to be confusing.

On a happier note - Michelle Obama visited my high school a couple of weeks
ago!

I have a faculty member who is looking for academic articles, white papers,

couple articles in Comm/Mass Media Complete and Film/TV Lit Index. However,
I am really having a hard time finding books on the topic. Does anyone have
any suggestions on alternative subject terms or other sources to search?
Specifically, the professor is looking for information on the basics as well
as future trends.

Thanks!

Hope you're well.

I have to teach about three lectures on interactive documentary in Leiden

identify some academic papers on the subject. I am looking for the basics
and perhaps something on future trends.

What do you recommend?

[Videolib] Video Capture Question

2010-07-14 Thread Rachel Gordon
Hey folks,

I sent this to the wrong email yesterday, silly me!

I have a technical question (or it may be a series of them) that so far I
have not been able to find a "we have done this" answer to yet and I thought
to see if this is already done in your institutions and I'm just not aware
of it.

As many of you know, I'm creating an introductory documentary on
homeopathy.I'll be shooting it through the end of the year.

I've decided to include short interviews of people who have used homeopathy
to help fix/cure a variety of problems. I don't have the money to go
gallivanting around the universe so I am hoping to figure out a way to video
or internet conference, capture it, and use the footage in my final film (as
well as for future website/training tools).

What I've been told so far is that any taping/capturing done like this is
only good enough - picture and sound quality wise - for web usage and that
nobody has included this type of content yet in a finished film project.

So if any of you have experience with helping out a professor with this, or
doing it in your library, or any other great anecdotes/stories, I'd love to
hear about it. Feel free to send me info off list.

Thanks! Hope you're having a great summer!

Best,

Rachel

[Videolib] Now working with economics...

Hello my favorite community!

Starting tomorrow morning I'll be doing outreach for the economics videos
created by the International Monetary Fund. I don't know how many of you
know that they make videos (I didn't) but wanted to alert you in case you'd
find them useful, or you have used them and you have feedback.

The best part about their content is that it is free. They just want more
people to use their content! I'm still learning about their delivery methods
but have been told they can be downloaded for free via NewsMarket. You can
also view them here: http://www.imf.org/external/mmedia/index.aspx

Hope the start of school goes smoothly for all!

[Videolib] self distribution

2012-08-31 Thread Rachel Gordon
Self-distribution.ah.one of the most complicated things to explain to
someone just starting to figure things out. But please tell this person that
the good thing about education is that you can take your time to figure
things out. Unlike other markets, you can go slow and ask as many questions
as you want because there is longer usage of your content in education than
in the commercial environment.

The first thing I'd say to anyone is that if you're not willing to devote at
least a year to it - either by yourself or with an assistant or intern -
that you basically want to go with a distributor.

Some time ago I wrote an article for Shooting People on whether to choose
self-distribution or not. I'm not suggesting to read it because I wrote it,
but because it gives a sense of the investment they are in for.

Best of luck!

Dear Reframe Partner,

We are excited to announce a new service to all Reframe partners: OverDrive.

OverDrive (
http://www.overdrive.com/About/) is one of the nation's largest distributors
of digital content to public and school libraries, as well as to K through
12 schools, universities and colleges. Founded in 1986, OverDrive has become
a leading source of eBooks, audiobooks and videos for institutions, reaching
95% of the country's public libraries and 15,000 libraries, schools and
colleges nationally and internationally.

Overdrive is a download-only service that enables librarians and other
institutional users to order a digital download of a title for use by a
single patron at a time, and optionally, to curate a series of titles to
offer to patrons or students via subscription. Among the distributors or
aggregators of independent media that currently use OverDrive are PBS and
Film Movement. A brief summary of the OverDrive service and how it works is
attached.

After months of review, we determined that OverDrive gives you a new way to
expand your markets that is complementary with Amazon's CreateSpace that you
could not access on your own, and that is easy to implement. Reframe's
agreement with OverDrive provides the following benefits:

* Access to OverDrive, which is only available through an aggregator
or distributor;
* Enables Partners to benefit from two platforms with complimentary
strengths to reach individual users (Amazon) and institutions (OverDrive);
* Ability to effectively reach the public library system, which
otherwise is a very difficult market to enter;
* Increases the revenue potential for work suited to the institutional
market, in particular non-traditional work (such as shorts, experimental
films, etc.) that is often is excluded by commercial platforms
