I don't have one, but any chance of you posting a couple of photos of the
motherboard connector?connectorpeople.com might sell the raw connector
and that would be handy info to have, but the connector would need to be
identified first, which involves me starting with number of pins and
location of notches and hunting through their list of connnectors...

Hello,
I'm interested in buying a Performa 631cd with the monitor that came with
it that had speakers, keyboard and mouse and an ethernet card for the comm
slot or wireless (if that is possible with this) and a 608040 cpu with fpu
to replace the lc one. Preferably one that hasn't discolored. I've looked
at ebay and there is one there but it is discolored, unknown if to work, no
keyboard, mouse or monitor. Thank you in advance.

Re: Mac LC 550 (Performa 550) can only boot to CD?

2017-07-25 Thread Jason Johnson
Well at the heart of this if you have read any of the posts on these threads
you may have heard some mention of capacitors. The little tin can looking
things on the motherboard. Your 550 almost positivly needs new ones installed.
All the LC type motherboards from the LC to Quadra 605, performa 5xx series
and color classics all have this problem now. Before you can do any real
troubleshooting (I am guessing the scsi hard drive is dead also, as that is
normal at 25 years of age also) those need replaced and a good motherboard wash
to get the goo off of it and check for bad traces that may have been eaten
through by the capacitor goo.

hi, I have a Mac LC 550 (Performa 550) that I used to be able to start up
without any problems, but, the mouse died. I recently found a replacement
mouse, but now the computer doesn't seem to notice both the internal HD or the
Floppy drive... without the SCSI cable, I can't use my zip 100 drive to boot
from, and, when I purchased it in 2003, it didn't come with this 'Macintosh
Performa CD' that the manual refers me to... how do I get it running again?
thanks

Mac LC 550 (Performa 550) can only boot to CD?

2017-07-23 Thread pat diddy
hi, I have a Mac LC 550 (Performa 550) that I used to be able to start up
without any problems, but, the mouse died. I recently found a replacement
mouse, but now the computer doesn't seem to notice both the internal HD or
the Floppy drive... without the SCSI cable, I can't use my zip 100 drive to
boot from, and, when I purchased it in 2003, it didn't come with this
'Macintosh Performa CD' that the manual refers me to... how do I get it
running again? thanks

Re: Getting software on a Performa (Or similar)

The easiest way to interface an old Mac with new computers is to give the old
Mac an Ethernet interface and have it talk TCP/IP. This is easiest to achieve
when there’s a NuBus slot available and with System 7. Some of the later 68K
Macs and most of the PowerMacs came wth Ethernet built-in.

Getting a floppy drive for your PC is also a good idea, and will simplify
getting the network stack and decompression software onto the Mac (if it isn’t
there already), but you might also need to do some mechanical maintenance on an
old Mac’s floppy drive - hopefully just lubrication. Use only the 1.4 MB
format, not the 800K, with a PC-type floppy drive.

A third option is to get a SCSI controller for the PC, and use that to
interface with the Mac’s HDD; the old Adaptec 2904 is ideal, but you can often
find higher-performance cards for cheap on eBay. You want one with a 50-pin
internal connector to attach an old drive directly, and/or a cable to go
between between the 50-pin or 68-pin external port on the PC card and the
25-pin external port on the Mac. (Crashing a Mac during the early boot
sequence disables the internal SCSI controller and lets you access drives from
an attached PC instead.)

Some Macs (even 68K) came with IDE HDDs instead; many PC m/boards no longer
have a PATA controller built in, but you can still buy PCI adapters for that
too.

The fourth option is, as you suggested, to burn CD-Rs to be read by a CD-ROM
drive. Note that original drives of the time will often only read CD-Rs, not
CD-RWs (they are not “multiread capable”) and certainly won’t handle DVDs of
any sort.  More capable, newer drives are available but might not be bootable;
this requires “blessed” firmware.

For all of the above options *except* Ethernet, you have the additional problem
of getting a PC to understand the Mac filesystem and preserving the “resource
fork” and metadata of Mac files during transfer. There is software to do this.
Obviously it’s all a lot easier if your newer computer is also a Mac.

And also be aware that Macs of this age often suffer from dying capacitors. If
they haven’t been replaced already, plan to have it done in the near future.

Re: Boot hard disc for Performa 631CD

2016-03-31 Thread Robert Hesson
I have a performa 631 and it will see most older IDE hard drives. I have a 30gb
drive with multiple partitions in mine. I also still have the working 500mb
unit too.

I still have the working restore cd I could make an image of too.

RE: Need Plastic foot for Performa 6115CD

2014-12-28 Thread Wesley Furr
Is the foot solid on top? Assuming there is enough clearance, could you
remove the motherboard (if it's in the way) and drill a hole through the
case and foot and use a small screw and nut and maybe washer on the foot to
hold it in place?

I'm pretty sure it's ABS, that's what the majority of computer cases and
case parts are made out of. Fairly rigid but brittle, especially after being
exposed to lots of UV. I didn't know that Gorilla glue would bond plastic
and metal, I would assume that you'd have to use something like JB-Weld or
an automotive adhesive.

Re: Looking for info on Performa 630 CD-Format

2014-11-22 Thread 'Keith Jamison' via Vintage Macs
Hi again, Ph.
Some CD-Dataformats could not be loaded. The remaining CD data formats have
 been activated:

 ISO 9660
 High Sierra
 Audio CD Acess
 Apple Photo Access  [CONTINUE]
It sounds to me that the list of files you mentioned HAVE been activated. I
notice that Foreign File Access was not listed and it's a translator
necessary for ISO 9660, PhotoCD and High Sierra to work.

Have you tried checking that Foreign File Access and Apple CD-ROM are
switched on in Extension Manager? You could switch off all the extensions and
then only switch on the system set and the CD access extensions. There may be a
conflict with a different non-CD extension.
Hope this helps to narrow it down a bit more.
Cheers,
Keith

I'm confident to make it work now, using either zip drives or the ethernet card

But before i'm giving up on the CD based solution entirely, let me give
additional info on the Performa. The SSW is D1-7.5.1 , also, upon startup it
gives me this error message: (my own translation into english, since the system
is set to german)

Some CD-Dataformats could not be loaded. The remaining CD data formats have
been activated:

ISO 9660
High Sierra

Apple Photo Access  [btn: continue]

Does this mean that ISO 9660 isn't activated (and thus means it could be,
theoretically)?

A quick Wiki research shows that this would be the format used through today
for all CD formatting, if i'm not mistaken!

Any suggestions on how to get the ISO 9660 activated on the Performa?

Thanks again, folks for the quick responses - i'm confident to get this done,
thanks to your help!

Cheers,
Ph

I read your LEM VintageMacs post for a Performa630 PSU part. I did'nt know
if you still want one, but -
Could you use a whole working PSU for a Performa 6300 that this 6300 had as
an original PSU ? I removed it, I then installed one that supplied a small
amount more power for supporting 6300 upgrades.I later sold that 6300. You
can see pictures of it if you want to see them,I will send you googlephoto

Re: Looking for info on Performa 630 CD-Format

2014-11-22 Thread 'Gregg Eshelman' via Vintage Macs

On 11/22/2014 9:36 AM, mrandmrs sync wrote:

Thanks a lot for all the replys!

I'm confident to make it work now, using either zip drives or the
ethernet card you pointed me to...

But before i'm giving up on the CD based solution entirely, let me give
additional info on the Performa. *The SSW is D1-7.5.1* , also, upon
startup it gives me this *error message*: (my own translation into
english, since the system is set to german)

Some CD-Dataformats could not be loaded. The remaining CD data formats
have been activated:

ISO 9660
High Sierra
Audio CD Acess
Apple Photo Access [btn: continue]

Does this mean that ISO 9660 isn't activated (and thus means it could
be, theoretically)?

A quick Wiki research shows that this would be the format used through
today for all CD formatting, if i'm not mistaken!

Any suggestions on how to get the ISO 9660 activated on the Performa?

You need the disc format extensions from the install floppies or CD for
your OS version. Use Tome Viewer to extract them.

Also get this Joliet extension. http://www.tempel.org/joliet/ Note the
info that the formerly shareware version is now freeware.

You can also do a custom install and just select those CD files, but
Apple being Apple, custom isn't quite what it should be. You'll likely
get a bunch of other things installed anyway, just because you *might*
need them. For example all the files for printers when you only need the
ones for the printers you actually have. That how it just works works,
using up a bunch of storage for drivers for everything you don't have
but could at some point buy and connect to your Mac.

** Lastly, you have mentioned that you received an error concerning data
formats on your Performa. According to specifications found on everymac,
the Performa 630 utilized IDE as a connection interface. I do not
remember how Apple interfaced non-SCSI devices with the OS. If you run
into problems with accessing CDs I would try installing FWB CD-ROM
toolkit software as it did provide reasonable support for many different
CD drives and interfaces.

Somewhere on lowendmac.com is an archive of software for Mac clones and
some upgrades. Among those downloads (IIRC for a 603 CPU upgrade) is an
OEM version of FWB CD-ROM toolkit. It happens to be a full version of
the software that works with at least 7.5 through 9.2.2, with both 68K
and PPC support. It also has CD changer/jukebox support.

An ethernet card for your Performa solves the problem and has other

Where can i find info on the CD-format that the old Performa

Re: Performa 631 trouble

2014-09-12 Thread Robert Hesson
I'll tear it open this weekend and give it a look. I did swap to a full '040
back in the late 90's and have loved this machine since then. This begs the
question.. What is your Hangup with the performa 63x series? They are a hell of
a lot better in my opinion than the 62xx/63xx series that replaced them, in my
opinion at least.

successfully rebuild one? I didn't see any on eBay

Usually it is one particular resistor, I think R44 if I recall
correctly, typically of green colour and easy to spot, that burns out in
the 63x power supplies. I've seen lots of those, and they always go in
the same way, although there are some variants of the power supply that
 are not affected (different layout).

Usually the board is already badly charred around that spot when the
power supply gives in, and I've never found it worthwhile to repair one
since I've had spares (and I never liked the 63x that much anyway). But
I assume that it should not be very complicated to do a bit of re-wiring
around that spot. Give it a try.

little lost as to what I have to do because I'm used to Windows simply
because of all the computers I normally use/d for work and school and such

I have a ClarisWorks folder that looks like this

Claris

I only have my Windows PC to work on as my venerable Power Mac G3 is

Re[2]: Performa 630CD Info

2014-07-19 Thread Scott Holder
68k Macs can't boot from an HFS+ partition, so that's expected. Mac OS
8.1 can handle HFS+ fine anyway, so you could have a small HFS boot
partition and big data drive on HFS+.

As for ethernet, this model has both LC PDS and Comm Slots, so you have
a pretty good list of options. Unless you need a modem in the Comm Slot,
you'll probably be better off using it for ethernet and keeping the LC
PDS for other options.

If you hunt around eBay or the Swap List, you can probably find it
cheaper, but http://www.welovemacs.com/comslotimac.html has some Comm
Slot I cards in stock. Make sure you watch out and don't end up with a
Comm Slot II card.

My only thing is that this machine is on a HFS partition, not a HFS+
partition, does that affect the ability to read HFS+ formatted discs in
Mac OS 8.1?

I am trying to write software over to the machine on CDs because it

If anyone could provide me a link to an Ethernet card compatible with

Re[2]: Performa 630CD Info

2014-07-17 Thread Scott Holder
How long did you wait after powering on? Remember these Macs test their
RAM on startup, and stuffing these huge amounts of RAM into them can
make them take upwards of minutes to come up. My IIci can take literally
2-3 minutes from bong to screen on when I have the full 128MB in it.

Welp. Got my Mac working well, then I get my 64MB stick of RAM, install
it, and it immediately stops displaying anything on the monitor while
using the same exact settings on my adapter I had used when it had the
32MB stick.

I went back to the original RAM, and it still doesn't work, and I've
tried pretty much every combination for every display and still
nothing.

I'm wondering what's going on.

same exact settings on my adapter I had used when it had the 32MB stick.

I went back to the original RAM, and it still doesn't work, and I've tried
pretty much every combination for every display and still nothing.

 I'm wondering what's going on.

The D4893 is actually a rebadged Samsung KMM53632000, so that's a

There's doesn't appear to be anything affordable under these part numbers

Okay, a little searching turns up this: http://r.ebay.com/gyMNxv, which
is 64 MB SIMM for $12. However, unless I miss my guess, that SIMM is
actually built out of 3.3V parts and has a voltage control chip on board to
adjust the supply voltage for the chips. In general, 3.3V memory chips
will work with 5V I/O, but it may not be reliable in some machines.
Still, that seller is a good one to watch. Back when, he had piles of the
D4290 for about $10 each.

Ah, the viewed similar items link to the rescue. This one is the stuff.
Real 5V chips. However, I've never actually used one of this make so I'm
not guaranteeing it works, but it has as good a chance as any untested item
from Ebay. It seems to meet the specs. http://r.ebay.com/XMFq4d

Also this http://r.ebay.com/w4651q but call or email them and make sure
it has just 8 chips on board. The photo is representational only.
There are some composite SIMMs built out of 4M X 4 parts with 32 chips on
board and you want to avoid those.

Actually, not an important point at all. There is an AppleTech Note which
spells out the fact that Macs which work with FPM memory all work fine with
EDO memory. The only exception is the PowerMac 7200 and its Power

Re: Performa 630CD Info

2014-07-11 Thread 'James Fraser' via Vintage Macs

Hello,

You can get an 040 just as cheap, or less, than a bare CPU by buying a
complete Quadra 630 mainboard to slide into your
 Performa 630.

If that's the case (or rather, the motherboard [sorry...]), a WTB (Want To Buy)
post here:

http://lowendmac.com/2014/lem-swap/

...might net you one (assuming you're not familiar with that list already, that
is).

While I can't say for sure what a post there will yield, I don't think it's too
much of a stretch to say that the LEM Swap List, generally speaking, tends to
be a hobbyist friendly-sort of place, with prices to match.

The downside is that LEM Swap requires one to include one's name, city, state,
and zip when either buying or selling. The point being: if anonymity is
important to you, eBay is probably your best bet in terms of not broadcasting
who you are, where you are, and what you're up to to the world at large.

Anyway, it's just something for you to consider in your search for a hobby Mac.
[shrugs]

Best,

James Fraser

It'll go up to 128+4 meg with the right SIMM. MicroMac has them, maybe,
dunno if they still sell anything but the website is still there.

http://www.micromac.com/products/bigsimms.html

http://www.applefritter.com/node/24415

IIRC what the SIMMs must have is a lot of small capacity chips due to
the memory controller being unable to work with high capacity chips.

In other words 2 or 4 chip SIMMs of any size won't work, has to have at
least 8 chips for up to 32 meg. 64 meg would likely have 16 chips and
128 meg 32.

Google MicroMac BigSIMM and you'll find more info not on the micromac site.

Hi Christian,

Welcome to the Vintage Macs Group.

I can tell you that the video adapters that plug into your Performa and a
standard VGA monitor work fine. I used them years ago and I still have them. I
currently run a Performa 475 through a DB15 to HD15 adapter to a 14 LCD screen
with a HD15 plug. It's odd seeing the display so sharp but it's a real delight!

It also works with the 12 Apple Colour monitor I have but I need that for the
LC!

You might be able to pick up a low cost, second hand 14 or 15 LCD monitor
with SVGA/VGA resolution. That will be fine for your use.

I have the 14 LCD mounted on the wall so that I don't lose real estate on the
desk.

Good luck!

Regards,

Keith

Re: Performa 630CD Info

2014-07-10 Thread 'Keith Jamison' via Vintage Macs
Hi Christian,

You're right about that mouse. Sounds like you have an Apple ADB mouse
(G5431/A9M)331). When we bought our Performa 630CD's back in the '90s, they
were all supplied with the ADB Mouse II (M2706) - the teardrop shape.

IIRC, there were two versions (maybe more)of the ADB II. One version had a
simple twist panel in the base of the mouse to hold the mouse ball secure. The
second version had a lockable twist panel which could be 'unlocked' with a
straightened paperclip. This saved us a bunch of money because the pupils could
not open the bottom of the mouse and remove the mouse ball.

Check Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_mouse) and scroll down to
see the variations.

As for cool games, I remember only a few. Oxyd was quite addictive for me.
There was another Heath Robinson/Rube Goldberg style game where you had to
arrange bizarre objects to achieve a goal. I think 'contraption' was in the
title and it involved a Professor. I also remember a mandrill (primate). I
cannot for the life of me think of its name! It's a TIM (The Incredible
Machine) type game.

You should be able to rummage through the 'abandonware' pages at Macintosh
Garden (macintoshgarden.org). They keep quite a collection.

Regards,

Keith

Even though it may have shipped with the oval mouse, any ADB mouse
should work just fine; any Apple ADB mouse will absolutely work fine.

I would bet that the variations between mice of the same model was due
to different manufacturers, not a revision.

Hi Christian,

As others have mentioned, any old ADB mouse (or keyboard) will work, even
if it's not be completely authentic if that's what you're going for. I also
have used the Mac-VGA video adapters on the beige powermacs and Mac II
series machines without issues.

If you haven't found it already, this link will give you some idea of
machine specs and what you can put in it for expansion:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_quadra/specs/mac_quadra_630.html

I don't have much of any experience with the Quadras but it looks like that
machine can run up to OS 8.1. I'd be inclined to run 7.5 on it for speed
and lower RAM requirements. Since it's a 68040 this machine is among the
faster of the 68k line and it should handle pretty well.

Have fun! It's always nice to have more join us down the rabbit hole... ;)

Hello,

I am in the market for a 68k Mac, preferably one of the later ones, and I've
 found a nice cheap Performa
 630CD on eBay,

When you say, cheap, does factoring in the cost of shipping still keep the
machine in the Bargain Basement range?

I ask because, with a lot of older machines, it's not the initial price tag
that's noteworthy: it's the cost of shipping the thing across a few states that
can suddenly turn what seems initially to be a perfectly affordable proposition
into a clippy one.

Best,

Re: Performa 630CD Info

2014-07-10 Thread J Harton
Best of luck with your new mac.

The mac-vga adapters do work quite well. I've used mine with my LC II, and
powermac 6100. Any old CRT/LCD with a vga port should work fine. That said,
my 19 samsung monitor (~2004) doesn't like it. So, try to find a monitor
that's (at least for LCDs) around 14/15 or less and that supports at
least a minimum resolution of 800x600. If it's a widescreen or has a dvi
port it may not work at all since it simply may not support a low enough
resolution. VGA/DVI adapters don't have any fancy circuitry (as I
understand), so if you have a dvi only monitor that fits the other criteria
you could try it (although you'd need a vga-dvi adapter). Also, some
adapters have a bunch of dip switches, and unless it's comes with a
reference sheet like mine did (and maybe even still) you may have to fiddle
with a number of different configurations of the switches before you find
one that produces a sharp-ish display without any horizontal or vertical
wobble. The refresh rate that the monitor supports may also be an issue. I
assume that anything that supports 60hz+ should be fine.

There are two main types of DVI port. One has both analog and digital,
the other is only digital. Both can also have one or two digital monitor
output in the one port. A DVI port with analog is easy to identify by
the + shape slots at one end. The digital only ones don't have that.

I don't know of any monitor that combines the analog VGA *input* into a
DVI connection.

Older Macintosh computers expect to have various pins connected together
in the cable to detect which resolution to set the video to. Back when
printing for newspapers and other graphic arts was 72DPI, Apple printers
were 72DPI too, so they wanted what was on the monitors to be exactly
the same size as print. (I suspect that instances of people holding up
printouts to their screen to compare the size were very rare.)

Thus Apple made each size of monitor only support a single resolution,
which is why the 12 color monitor and the Color Classic are 512x384
instead of 640x480, which would be higher than 72DPI at that screen size.

On Macs without built in support for multi-resolution monitors, you need
to buy or build an adapter. Some adapters have switch settings to make
just about any multi-resolution monitor work with any Mac that has the
large 15 pin connector. Some adapters only have settings for the older
fixed resolution monitors.

Search the web and you can find diagrams of how the sense pin
connections work, and from that you can easily solder together a single
resolution adapter.

Somewhere out there, there should be information on what old Macs have
built in video with multi-resolution monitor support.

2014-07-10 Thread Christian Brodermann
Alright!

So I can see the DB15-VGA converters work, and I have one with the DIP
switches, so we're good.

Anyway, my next thing is, how can I put a full-on 68040 in this machine,
and is it worth it to update to Mac OS 8.1, or should I stick with the
7.6.1 it has installed.
I know this is a big point of contention between a lot of late-model 68k
Mac owners, but on this specific machine, as is, with a 33MHz 68LC040,
should I go to 8.1
or should I stick to System 7?

I have researched the hell out of it, but I want other opinions. If anyone
here has any advice, I'd be much obliged.

Carefully pry the current CPU out of its socket and carefully press in

Your first problem is finding a 33Mhz 68040 CPU. The 25Mhz ones aren't
too awful bad for price but the 33Mhz, people expect you gotta be
kidding prices for them. On 40Mhz they just get insane.

You could try a 25Mhz one and overclock it, use some Arctic Silver and
put on a 486 CPU cooler and fan.

Or dig up a Macintosh Processor Upgrade Card, part number M3397LL/A and
you can run PPC software.

Re: Performa 630CD Info

2014-07-10 Thread 'J.S. Garrison' via Vintage Macs
I have always preferred to use the latest OS the machine will tolerate, except
in Classic Macs. I'm a little odd about that for the rareness of a System 6.0.3
or 6.0.4 over the better running, more de-bugged 6.0.8. 8.1's a great choice
for that Performa if it has enough RAM (64MB).

You can get an 040 just as cheap, or less, than a bare CPU by buying a

How can I put a 64 MB RAM stick into this machine, and is there a specific

What a difference a decade makes! I bought a couple 33mhz 68040s in the
early 2000s, primarily for running Linux on my Macs. I still have one in
an overclocked LC 475 on my desk; it runs Linux sort of decently but Mac
OS X really slowly. Back then they were often not selling at all, or
maybe a bid or two. I'm sure I paid less than $20 for mine, possibly
less than $10. Shoulda cornered the market on the things! I can't
imagine they're especially rare even at this point; it's probably a
combination of esoteric demand and specialist market willing to pay that.

I still regret missing out on a couple Radius Rockets cheap on eBay in
the late 90s. Those things are rare as hens' teeth now and often sell
for .

Performa 630CD Info

2014-07-09 Thread Christian Brodermann
Hey Vintage Mac lovers!!

I'm new to the 68k Mac world, being a Apple ][ and PPC guy more than
anything, and I really have no idea half the time what anything is in the
68k Mac world because Macs were kind of, well, weird at the time, let's
just leave it at that.

I am in the market for a 68k Mac, preferably one of the later ones, and
I've found a nice cheap Performa 630CD on eBay, with fully upgraded RAM, a
33 MHz stock processor, a power cord, and a keyboard and mouse (although I
don't think it's the right mouse, cause it is the trapezoid mouse and it's
a lot more yellowed than the keyboard). Anyways, the point is I'd like to
know some info on the machine and if anyone here has had any luck with
those DB15 to VGA things on one of these because unfortunately, I do not
own a Mac monitor and probably won't for quite some time simply because I
don't have the desk space for a CRT right now, and if not, where I could
find a VGA card of some type for it.

My only other questions are what good games or cool programs are there for
a Mac of this age, what OS should I run on it (Mac OS 7.5? 8.1? 9?), and
lastly, what are my upgrade options if I want to put a DOS card or some
other expansion card in here?

Thank you guys!!

Re: Performa 5200cd info needed!

Google is your friend.

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_performa/specs/mac_performa_5200cd.html
http://lowendmac.com/1995/performa-5200/

Having an integrated screen would both makes it easier to use (don't need
to obtain a monitor too) and harder to sell (can't get it without a
monitor, which is desirable these days since you can get a vga adapter and
use it with any old vga display that supports the resolution). It's
probably not too upgradeable, or it's a hassle to do so, given the
all-in-one ness of it. Everymac .com suggests that at a resolution of
832x624 with 1mb vram the 5200cd can only do 8-bit color, whereas an LCIII
with max vram of 768k can do 832x624 with 16-bit color. Not too good
there...

Performa 5200cd info needed!

2014-04-28 Thread Thomas Read
Was wondering if anyone could give me some information on an old macintosh
5200cd. I was told that it may be worth some money as it was only in production
for a year in North America, I have a microtek scan maker 2 with it and the
colorstylewriter 2400 and all original paperwork with games and floppy disks
etc. with the actual macintosh it does not turn on but I'm sure there should be
easily fixable as it is in perfect condition and has been very well looked
after and not a spot of dust inside.

If anyone could actually let me know the worth of these or just provide some
information about them it would be brilliant, thank you very much for reading!

Re: Performa 5200cd info needed!

2014-04-28 Thread 'J.S. Garrison' via Vintage Macs
My perspective:

First, it's a Performa. A dead PRAM battery could prevent it from booting. Easy
fix. It weighs nearly 50 pounds. Shipping to a collector would be costly. I
don't think this model is a desirable one for Mac collectors. The scanner's
usable limitedly. The Color Stylewriter 2400 was made by Canon for Apple. The
cartridges are still available and they're not that expensive.

I refurbished, in my heyday, every Mac that came across my desk. If I owned it,
I would make it work and clean it up. Just because.

Subject: Performa 5200cd info needed!

Re: Performa 637 CD-ROM replacement

2014-01-23 Thread J.S. Garrison
Well, I used to rely on FWB, the hard disk utility people, because their
program, CD Tool Kit has an extension that contains a large bundle of drivers
for non-Apple opticals. It's out there. I just don't know where to tell you to
look. Google, maybe?

Thank you for all of your help. I'll give it a try in the morning. It appears
that a suitable driver still might be a problem. What is the FB tool kit that
I might have to find?
