Re: IIci battery issues

2013-01-20 Thread Jonathan Morton
I forget whether the IIci will run without a PRAM battery (several of the
II series won't) but you should be able to attach a hard disk to the
external SCSI port without further modification. It will need external
power in that case.

You can try to power up the machine without either battery or disk. If it's
working, you should get the flashing question mark on the screen. It's
possible that it needs the battery just to trigger the PSU though.

The PRAM battery, if you need one, will be the standard half-AA 3.6V
lithium cell for almost all desktop Mac models from the II to the G5. The
battery holder is also standard and distinctive for that type, so
exceptions to that rule are easy to identify. OWC are a reliable source for
these batteries, though not the only one. It should be possible to clear
the corrosion using emery paper - an old DIY trick for bicycle lamps.

I believe it will run without a battery.

Go to an electronics or automotive supply store and buy a high grade
electronics cleaner/contact cleaner that is plastics safe. It will neutralize
the acid and remove it. Let it dry overnight and it should be good as new.

I do this frequently with production computer equipment and it works great!

2013-01-20 Thread Sarah
It had shown some signs of life before I found the blown battery; the
PSU spins up, and the hard drive hiccups. This machine has always been a
bit tetchy with hard disks, and I thought at first that the currently
installed one had just finished dying. It's fun to tell all the kids in
my classes about smacking the computer to get it to boot.

A good deal of the acid came off with a toothbrush and warm water. I'll
see if I can find some contact cleaner to clear the rest, and get the
floppy drive defurred to find out if it can boot from floppy.

Thanks!

I wonder, is it common for lithium cells to leak like that? I've had it
happen with alkalines quite often, but I also have my IIcx's original
battery from 1990 and that is still intact (just very very dead). The circa
2000 vintage batteries from my Quadra and 8100 have also not leaked.

Perhaps it has something to do with heat or humidity. I live in a
relatively cool part of the world.

the hard drive through one of the expansion slots?

Thanks!

First things first. The board needs cleaned. Easiest way is to take it out,
take the RAM SIMMs off it then use liquid dish soap, warm water and an old
toothbrush to scrub off the battery goo.

Rinse with a lot of water, followed by 91% rubbing alcohol. Park the board on
edge for a day in the sun, in front of a heat vent or if lacking sun and heat
vents, a couple of hours in a food dehydrator set to 85 degrees Fahrenheit
followed by day of further time to dry.

No food dehydrator? Let it sit on edge for two days, preferably with a fan
blowing at it.

DO NOT try to dry the board in an oven. DO NOT use a hair dryer or heat gun.

The battery required is a 3.6 volt lithium, 1/2 AA size.

Before you try any repairs, after cleaning and drying the board, put the IIci
back together, without connecting the floppy and hard drive cables, and see if
it'll boot up.

You want to see the Happy Mac icon followed by a flashing floppy disk icon with
a question mark. That shows the board and RAM have passed bootup tests and its
looking for a bootable disk or hard drive.

Thank you for confirming the brand.

Yes, unfortunately, Maxells don't seem to fare very well when left in vintage
Macs long-term. I asked about the brand because there was a very exciting
thread concerning Maxell PRAM batteries on 68kmla:

http://68kmla.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18222

The Tadiran-branded batteries don't seem to be entirely immune from the
mini-grenade effect when left alone for years on end (see page 2 above), but if
that thread is to be believed, it's the Maxells that are particularly prone to
leaking and damaging the motherboard.

(Not that leaving dead batteries installed in -anything- is a good idea, of
course.)

If you have any more Macs in the attic, this might be a good time to open them
up and yank out the PRAM batteries so you don't end up with any more, uh,
popguns going off. :/

It has been suggested that some brands are more prone to exploding

Thank you. I should have clarified that to "when I take the holder off."
At least the layout mostly contained the damage; the floppy rack seems
to have protected the PSU without taking significant damage, and the
floppy drive itself only has surface corrosion from what I can tell,
although those are some blasted soft screws and it's still in its slot.

I took the battery out of the Performa this morning, and the Old Man's

Sadly I had the same thing happen. Maxell battery exploded and I did not notice

RE: IIci battery issues

2013-09-12 Thread Wesley Furr
I've started working towards going through my computer collection and making
sure all batteries are removed...and it's been a depressing experience so
far. From what I've read, in the Mac world, Maxell batteries are bad news.
In the PC world, seems like everything I have with a non-button cell type
battery is leaking...at least the 4 or 5 or so I've gotten to so far. And
all but one have been dead...and the one that is still alive won't recognize
a keyboard that is plugged in. :-( The worst was the old IBM AT 5170
motherboard I had in a drawer...stupid me left the 4xAA CMOS battery holder
laying on top of the board, face down, with batteries still installed.
Ugh...and to add insult to injury, another of my semi-treasured motherboards
was laying on top and leaked some battery crap down onto it...so somewhere
between those two...it's dead...plus the one that had been laying on top of
it is dead too. Heavy sigh... Many of the older 386/486 era PC's have a
soldered-on NiCd or NiMH battery, and they all seem to be leaking deadly
goop...which means you have to take the board out to get the snips to the
area to remove said battery. I need to get to the Mac's as well...got a
IIci and IIcx (or something like that)...hoping they aren't damaged. Then
there are the LC's...and I know some of those need new caps... I didn't
know computer collecting could be time consuming as well!

So...the moral of the story...go through everything and TAKE OUT THE
BATTERIES!!!

2013-09-12 Thread J.S. Garrison
I just picked up a Mac Classic from an ad on Craigslist last week. It rattled
when I carried it to my car from the seller's and I had the dread.

At home, I swiftly took it open and...the battery, a half-AA, had leaked
and rotted the "+" connector on the motherboard and rusted
part of the metal frame. It cleaned up ok, but now I have to ponder a
motherboard repair or swap.

Re: IIci battery issues

2013-09-13 Thread J.S. Garrison
I know the solder-job is an easy one, but the battery was really corroded and I
don't know the damage it caused. I have another
solution.

The IIci used System 6. I have install floppies for 6.0.8, the most logical
choice, and a large cache of apps, INITs/CDEVs and
games for 6.
