Weeelll...you *could* put an ACARD adapter on the 2.5-to-3.5 IDE adapter,
but that seems a bit too much trouble (and REALLY expensive) for what's
likely a smaller-than-2GB drive.

Provided the external case in question is for use with IDE drives, that is.

If you don't want to use metal, there's various types
of plastic sheet that's thick enough for the job. :)

Nope, it's a NuBus card. The original Rocket can
either completely take over the CPU function or act
as a Mac inside your Mac. The Stage II Rocket only
works as a seperate Mac. The accelerator function
of the original Rocket was very limited by the
slower speed of the NuBus so the faster CPU and
onboard RAM were choked by the bottleneck of the
NuBus. PDS or CPU socket accelerators work much
better since they have direct access to the CPU
data and address busses. I assume that's why the
Stage II didn't have the accelerator function.

Personal LWntr printing on LC475, CCII

2002-04-07 Thread Teuila & Bertie Hall

First of all, if this is the wrong list to post a printing problem to,
please email directly where I should go. I've been to fixyourownprinter.com
with no help. No one there answers my posts.

A used Personal LaserWriter NTR that I just got will print okay from
LC475/OS8.1 and Color Classic with 550 board/OS7.5.5. Software driver is
Laserwriter 8.

The problem is that all pages are dark, not real dark, but the page is sort
of grey. I tried the LW utility to adjust it but all the options are shaded
out. The switch setting on the back is set to "0". I am using a regular
printer cable connecting directly from either of the two macs' printer ports
with no problem. Also, I removed the toner cartridge and carefully wiped off
the toner "dust" on the green roller. Didn't help. Same output: grey page
with printed file/document. I have printed about 40 pages with no
improvement. The LW utility says the page count is 8717.

Don't know when the cartridge was changed last, and I don't have a
replacement one to try.
Anyone had any experience with this model printing off of an LC475 or CC550
Mac (straining to keep this on topic)? Any comments or suggestions are
greatly appreciated.

Thanks again and God bless this list. You guys are great!

Bertie

The Mouse Systems mouse that I have connected to my Solbourne S4100/36 has
a metal mouse pad with a dark silver ink grid on it. It won't work with

It doesn't use the PDS slot it's an 030 socket upgrade, although that's

work anyway. I am getting a Radius Rocket with it on loan, as I said, so

There is one that'll work (as long as your desktop also uses an IDE
drive, that is). Find 'em at Computer Geeks .

Nope, the IIci CPU is not socketed. Prior to the
release of the IIci, DayStar made different
accelerators for each Mac. After the IIci all the
DayStar accelerators for 030 Macs were designed for
the IIci PDS/Cache slot and used adaptors for
Macs that didn't have the IIci type slot. The SE/30
and IIsi PDS is the same connector as the IIci but
they are not electrically compatable.

I'd leave it in the SE/30. With that one you still
have the PDS free for a network card, video card etc.

Make a spacer to fit between the lid and the case.
Step the top edge in to mimic the top edge of the
case. Some sheet metal should work. Any heating
and air conditioning shop should be able to make
up the spacer and roll the top edge to make the
step. Then it'd need some internal bracketry to
support the CD-ROM drive.

Nope... Macs are heavily reliant on their ROM, and the ROM tells them to
look for a Mac OS system folder, nothing else, on the designated boot drive
when starting up. There doesn't have to be anything on the so-called "boot
sector" of the drive, just a valid system folder.

That is the reason that (on vintage Macs), you always have to start from Mac
OS to get to an alternative OS.

Ah, yes... PRAM is still RAM, so with all power removed the contents will be
erased. My point is, some things will not be cleared by going through the
usual steps for clearing the PRAM, i.e. Holding down Command and Option when
starting the Finder.

In other words, what you just described constitutes a "deep zap".

I would guess this is one of the mice that does need a special mouse pad to

Mouse Systems Corp.'s "A+ Mouse ADB" ?

2002-04-07 Thread Luc Verhelst

Hello,

A couple of weeks ago, I bought an "A+ Mouse ADB". It's an optical
mouse, manufactured by Mouse Systems Corp. I have been trying to find
information on it, but all I could come up with is this page :
http://www.zdnet.co.jp/macwire/0111/30/r_opticordless.html. It's in
japanese, but it has two pictures of the mouse halfway down the page.
(I ran it through Babelfish, and I can understand enough of it to
know that the page doesn't have much info besides the photographs).

I tried to get it to work, without success. When I plug it into my
Duo 270, I can't move the pointer, but I can use the mouse's button
to click. (Surprisingly, the mouse stops the foremost button on the
Duo from working. The Duo's top button still works, though.)

All I got was the mouse, so no documentation, drivers, special mouse pad, ...

Anyone has got this thing ? Should it work just like that, or do I
need anything special ?

The mouse has two LEDs on the bottom. When plugged in, only one of
them emits any light (red). Is that normal ?

Thanks

Luc Verhelst

Yeh - RocketShare is a cool sounding app. Does it run the second 'Mac'
in a window?

Yet Another IIci question

2002-04-07 Thread Mark Benson

I have a Daystar PowerCache 030 upgrade in my SE/30 that plugs into the
CPU socket complete with cache and FPU. Will it work in a IIci, if so is
it worth pulling out of my SE/30 (which hardly gets used) and whacking
it in my soon-to-be-had IIci? I kinda thought seeing as they were both
1989 vintage 030 machines they might be cross compatible?

Hey, Bob F., this is your cue :)

(Yeah, there are adapters. Should be about $20, I think.)

Uh-huh. Without doing some very severe re-engineering of the chassis,
there's no way you'll ever get a CD-ROM inside it.

280MB will be fine; anything over 2 GB is what you'll want to watch out for.

The IIci doesn't need it, ever.

I think I've only ever seen maybe one Nubus modem, and it was slow. If you
want a decent speed modem, you'll want an external.

You'd have to cut the case to add a CD internally. Unless you're up for
some dremelling you'll want to hang it on the outside.

I think 7.1 will do up to 2 gigs... something like that. I've run it on up
to 1 gig anyway.

Shouldn't need it on the IIci. It's 32 bit clean.

Yet another IIci question

2002-04-07 Thread Teri Pittman

Okay, while we're all out happily hunting accelerator cards.

I take it that the best way to add a modem to a IIci is to get an external
serial port type. Am I right or am I missing something? I do know that
externals are generally more stable, but have used internals in the PCs
I've owned.

Also, about adding a CD, I'm guessing I would want an external SCSI CD.
I'm still waiting on this computer to arrive, but I understand space is
pretty limited inside.

Oh yeah, hard drive upgrades (it has 280MB presently). I take it that this
would be set up with multiple partitions, since OS 7.1 can't handle larger
disks.

I'm also a bit confused about when to use Mode 32. I am still working my
way through the LowEndMac site, so feel free to point me to documentation
on that site.

Thanks again!

Here, here. The Daystar 50MHz card in my SE/30 makes if go like a
rocket, although it gets a little warm in the confines of that case

2.5" Hard drive adapter?

2002-04-07 Thread l k m

I have a 2.5 inch hard drive pulled from a PowerBook (3400) that I'd love to
install into an external hard drive case (set up for the bigger Mac hard
drives, 50 pin) and use on my desktop Mac. Is there an adapter that'll alow
me to plug in this tiny little guy?

Thanks,
Laura
