Re: Hard drive failure question...

2003-02-11 Thread Mike Evans
One thing that worked for me, in getting a stiction-ed drive to work again
(it was Quantum Empire 1080MB... had been left unused for 6 months), was to
put it in an external case, leave it on a radiator for a bit so that it was
well warmed up (makes the grease in the bearings less viscous?), then plug
it in, turn it on, and then give the case some smart raps and also shake it
about in the air, while it is trying to start up...

Re: Help with take-apart 12 RGB

2002-12-22 Thread Mike Evans
I might work up some Dutch courage to do the VGA mod one day... Mr Takky's
site seems to explain it well but still seems worryingly difficult when
you've never wielded a soldering iron before. Havent got the URL offhand,
but google shld find it...(Apple RGB monitor VGA Takky)

In the meantime, a more pressing problem is that the picture on my 12 RGB
only lasts for up to about 30 mins before winking out (going black) with an
audible click? The LED remains 'on', i.e. green. It's def something to do w
the monitor, not w the computer. As it approaches the point of clicking off,
minute by minute, the picture shrinks slight;ly but noticeably and it
becomes more and more blurred. I'd like to have a go at repairing it...

Re: Sound and the LC

2002-09-30 Thread Mike Evans

I think this might be a (common?) fault in the LC. At least, the 2nd -hand
one that I bought exhibited this problem. Very faint internal sound. I tried
cleaning the contacts for the internal speaker no luck. But resting a
huge heavy monitor on the case for a month or two somehow restored the
connection... must have crushed the relevant contacts, somehow, somewhere,
into life... the sound is back to normal now, even tho the monitor is no
longer resting on the case...

 HI, Mike,

I just checked out the sound on one of my LCs, also running 7.1. The
behavior of the system I checked is consistent with your description. I
needed to use amplified (powered) speakers to get a significant sound
volume. Have you tried powered speakers? Also, be sure that the sound port
contacts are clean and that the plug for the speakers is clean. Good luck.

 Sp00ky

 Hello -

I recently rescued an old LC. It works great, except for the sound.
When I first started checking the LC out it was running 6.0.7 and the
sound was very low, but audible.

I upgraded to System 7.1, which gave me a sound control panel. I
opened the sound control and had to adjust the slide bar to the top to
hear any of the sounds. I tried hooking up external speakers, and
about all that I could hear was the hum.

What do I need to do to get my LC (plain LC by the way) to play sounds?
My initial intention is to use it as a kids' game machine, so sound is
 pretty important!

 Thanks.

 Mike

I think this is not what you are looking for, Sara, as PO is a

Another brainstorming/idea organizing aid is MORE 3.1, a freely available

what the URL is (try Google), but people really rave about it...

Re: LC Ethernet Cards (was: Re: my new LCIII)

2002-09-24 Thread Mike Evans

I have had good success in finding old Mac stuff on eBay UK... a year ago,
when I last monitored it intensively, it seemed that LC ethernet cards were
coming along fairly regularly (once a week?), and generally sold for about
£10...

The prices seem disappointingly high when compared to the US, but still
lower than in the few second-hand-Mac shops that I have found in UK...

thanks heaps guys, that really helps me to get started :-)

the difficulty with ebay is that i'm in the UK, although i've been told
that there are places here you can find LC ethernet cards... i'll also
need to get a copy of the OS as my LC III was, like so many, found in a
skip... its running 7.1 and a heap of interesting goodies on it at the
moment... although by the sounds of it, maybe i wont need the OS disks
if i can download a driver for installing the ethernet card...

do you know of any places to find mac OS upgrades for vintage machines?

PPP problem

2002-07-27 Thread Mike Evans

My parents' Mac has stopped being able to access the Internet. It's done
this before several times and I could always solve it by getting them to
re-type their user name and password into the PPP control panel -- seemed
like the data had been corrupted or something. The Mac is a IIci running OS
7.6.1 and Open Transport 1.1.2 with 80MB RAM and plenty of free space on
hard drive.

But now even this measure will not get it to work. The modem dials up OK,
modem compression is established, then authentication with the ISP starts...
and that's when the modem clicks off. I've looked high and low for a PPP
Preferences file to trash, but can't find it... is it invisible? I can find
prefs files for TCP/IP and Modem OK...

How can I solve this... do I need to re-install Open Transport? I have to do
all this diagnostics stuff over the phone as they live some way away, so any
easy-to-implement ideas gratefully received...

Mike

sonnet accelerator card mystery

2002-05-23 Thread Mike Evans

A few years ago I bought a Sonnet Allegro card to upgrade my LC to a
33MHz 030 processor. It came with a system extension called 'Allegro'
which presumably smooths its operation... however, I can't get things
like RAM Doubler or Open Transport to install properly, as they
insist that there is not an 030 processor present (in RAM Doubler's
case, it says there is no MMU present). With the Allegro extension
loaded, progs like TattleTech report that the 030 processor, the MMU
and the FPU are all present (in fact TattleTech sees the machine as
an LCII gestalt = 19g). Anyone know how to persuade Open Transport,
RAM Doubler etc. that the hardware has been upgraded?

Re: Bin files. Re: System 7.5.5 [was: my stash of Macs]

2001-07-27 Thread Mike Evans

I never managed to install Open Transport on my LC (via the copy in System
7.5.3 Installer or via an OT Installer (1.1.1 and 1.1.2) on its own). Maybe
an earlier version than OT1.1 will work on LC's, but I had no luck with
version 1.1.1 or 1.1.2.
Actually, to clarify, it was worse than that, in that the LC had a processor
upgrade card (Sonnet Allegro 030 33MHz), which the OT Installers couldn't
'see'. The Installer just said you need an 030 processor or higher to run
this software or something like that.
Kind of presumed when I bought the card that it wld allow me into a
wonderful new world of speed and stability, using stuff like OT, but,
oh well, now I know different. I'm never quite sure if the card is working
at all, actually. 'Clockometer' shows it as running at 33MHz, so I guess it
must be... but it still seems that my IIci (030 25 MHz) might be faster
(although it does have an FPU... that must help).
I searched the Internet q a lot but never found any info on how to make the
OT Installer recognize the 030... Anyone had any experience with these
cards?

And, um, doesn't Open Transport require at least an
030 CPU? Or have I forgotten something? Haven't
ever actually used a Mac II or LC and the only 68000
based Mac I've used was a Classic with a bad HD.
Everything else has sported an 030 and newer.

68020 is minumum for OT.

Re: Wierd old external hard drive..

2001-07-24 Thread Mike Evans

Thanks for all the replies on this (and sorry if it was a bit OT for
VintageMacs, in that it involves a Plus...)... I will plug it into the
floppy port (briefly) to see what happens...

BTW, the ports on the drive have no markings or icons... ditto (I think) the

Will give it a shot anyway. From what I can see of the drive, it looks like
other 40MB SCSI drives I have seen out of LC's.
