Re: Drive problems

2005-11-07 Thread Thomas Burns
A little more info. These drives have been in these computers for at least a
year working fine. When I try to boot the IIci or 7500 the drives spin up
but then I get the flashing question mark. Could they have become unmounted
some how? I've also tried reseating the ram and vram, but that didn't seem
to do anything. I also was able to boot the 7500 to an external CD (since
now the internal CD doesn't seem to want work either) with system 8, and it
could see the internal cd and an unmounted drive which I'm assuming is the
HD. Could unplugging the original drive have done something when I tried to
add a slave drive, like a conflict that got rid of the start up drive?

Thanks
Thomas

The Turbo 601 requires a minimum of a FAT install of
System 7.5* with the Turbo 601 Enabler in the System
folder. IIRC, if you update to 7.5.5 you can remove
the enabler. I know 7.6 does not require it on the
hard drive, but still does on a PPC boot floppy.

8.1 does not require the 601 enabler at all, but you
need one of the hacks to allow it to boot with the
Turbo 601 disabled.

*The Turbo 601 originally came with a "free" copy of
7.5 on floppy disks to ensure the user had the
minimum required System software.

Drive problems

2005-11-06 Thread Thomas Burns

Hi,

This post has questions for the compact list and the PCI list, so I'll post
to both. I've been having some drive issues with a IIci and a 7500.

The IIci has a Turbo601, 128mbs ram, 2gb HD.
I'll either get the 4 chime sound and a black screen when I boot up or I get
the flashing question mark. I can boot from an external HD that's running
7.0.1. Could this be a dead drive or could the Turbo601 have died?

The 7500 has a Crescendo 450mhz card, 512mb ram, 1gb quantum fb hd. I tried
to add a 9gb seagate scsi HD as a slave, but could never get it to recognize
the drive in combination with the master 1gb. I did get the machine to boot
with a CD running 8.0 and formated the drive and broke it into 4 partitions.
Now when I boot all I get is the flashing question mark when the original
drive is in by itself. I cannot boot from the CD any more either. I tried 3
other quantum drives and all I get is the flashing question mark. How in the
world can I have 5 dead drives when they were all working?

Thanks for your help.

Thomas

If nobody has been inside it or if someone has and
put *everything* back, there's a single Phillips
screw in the middle back to remove. Pretty much
standard from the IIcx through all the later 68k
Desktops and Pizza Boxes. (Dunno about the Mac II, IIx
and IIfx.)

Take the drive out, hold it flat and twist it back
and forth quickly a few times. The inertia of the
platters will try to keep them still while the rest
of the drive rotates.

How about just putting the computer on it's side for half a day?

Hi:

Suggestion:

- ensure that you have disconnected the computer from AC power.
- disconnect the monitor and set it aside, especially if it is
sitting on top of the computer (!)
- pop the top cover off the computer. As I recall there are two tabs
at the rear edge of the top cover which you simply pull up on and
the lid with unhook and lift off
- remove the power and signal connectors from the back of the hard drive.
- lift the hard drive out of the computer.
- hold the hard drive in your hand and "snap" it in a circular
motion around the axis of the hard drive spindle. What you are
trying to do is the "unstick" the hard drive spindle. There is no
way to know if and when you have been successful but in my
experience two or three swift snaps either does the job or you're
toast.
- reassemble everything, turn on the computer, and see if the drive spins up.

Good luck!!

IIsi hard drive problems... and re "kicking myself"

2004-03-12 Thread Gai Early
Hello
I've just joined the list, nice to know some of the older Macs are
still going strong! I have a IIsi which has a non-responsive hard
drive... I had to buy a PC (ouch) because my workplace was using them
and I was doing work at home as well and I needed internet access...
Turned the IIsi off and it sat for a couple of months. Next time I
turned it on the hard drive wouldn't spin up. It will happily load from
floppies. Have been told that it's the grease in the little hard drive
motor which thickens if not in use. Any suggestions? I have a few short
stories on the hard drive...

Eva, re your 400k disk problem... maybe someone on the list could help
to transfer the files to a better medium? Have you looked for data
recovery services (horribly expensive I know). I am in Australia, but
on another list there has been info on data recovery by US services -
let me know if you would like me to post it on this list for you :-)

For sure not dead batteries. First thin I always do with a new find is to
strip it down and see what's inside.

If cables have come loose, what's actually inside for a hard disk, blow
loose the dust, etc.

Where a question mark appears in place of a booting happy Mac, I use a
boot floppy with an appropriate System Folder to try and make it come up.

If the floppy drive is damaged or dirty or stuck fast from non-use, I resort
to an external hard drive, as I've made some from old external CD ROM cases,
or actual external hard disks I've found in thrift stores.

Help ... Hard Drive Problems

2003-08-02 Thread Tristan Krautz
Hi all,

I have three old Macs: Color Classic, Quadra 700 and Centris 650. All
three are unable to locate their startup disks. That is, the floppy
disk with blinking question mark appears. Here are some details that
may help:

1) The Quadra and Centris have not been used in a while yet were
working fine when I last used them. The hard drive spins up in both
units.

2) The Color Classic was recently acquired through an auction. I
believe that it hasn't been used in some time either. I can not tell if
the hard drive spins up.

Could it possibly be dead batteries? My eMac doesn't have a floppy disk
drive so I am unable to make boot disks. The other Mac in the house,
Performa 580CD, is just a bit difficult to move (right now) to hook-up
to the eMac. I don't really want to go to the trouble of moving it just
to find out it was a dead battery.

Thanks. TK.

Apple disk utilities cannot always see non-Apple hard drives. There is
a patch for Apple HDSC Setup 7.5.3 that allows it to see non-Apple
drives. Your can find this and other hard disk utilites on Gamba's
page at http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/hd.html. Download HDSC and
the patch, apply the patch, then copy the patched version to a boot
floppy.

Ignore the PC drives for now. You need a SCSI utility
to check the HD. SCSI Probe, Mt. Everything or
something else. Also try Apple HDSC. It should be on
the disc tools.
