The really sad part of it is, I'm trying to get some good 16MB ramsticks to
put into the Quadra 700
I modified to run at 33Mhz. The fours in it now give only 20MB. Browsing
online takes a tremendous
amount of it. In fact, with the About This Computer window open while I
browse, the System will
swell to 10MB of it leaving only 2MB reserve. (Netscape 4.08 needs 8MB to
be crash-resistant.)

And this being the third time I've tried to buy RAM from Sunguk, being
completely ignored again, I'll
have to go elsewhere to get it and suffer the nonsense until I have enough
RAM to do it right.

It will do both. It will show a modest 5-10% increase in CPU and memory
speeds, but your video will be noticeably slower. The on board video in
a IIci runs at 25MHz, as you mentioned, the NuBUS cards can only pipe
data through a 10MHz bus. Still, a good accelerated NuBUS video card is
not a bad investment.

That's what I thought too.

I assume that a Mac of that vintage cannot automatically detect slower RAM.

70ns or faster tends to work better with accelerators according to anecdotal
 reports I've seen.

I second that. It's just easier to get the faster RAM and not wonder
which crashes were RAM speed related.

There is a Sun reseller or two on eBay who dumps RAM frequently, a lot
of which will work in Apple systems.

If you're referring to Sunguk, he's a jerk and a PITA to deal with.

I can't speak for the IIcx, but I know the IIci required 80ns or
faster. I think the majority of the 30pin SIMMs out there are 80ns
though. Just seems wierd to think that 80ns was considered insanely
fast only about 10yrs ago. Then again my Performa 400 wasn't too bad
then either :)

I was always wanting 60ns SIMMs for my old 286 PC
but had to settle for the 70ns ones I could actually
afford. :P Back in them days, a 10ns difference in
RAM speed could actually be seen in how fast overall
the computer operated. ;) (Especially during the
memory test count-up.)

Um, not quite.

I don't believe a IIci can use 120ns RAM. I had trouble with mine with
100ns RAM I had in storage.

My IIci has 32-bit 16MB 60ns SIMMs in it. I wouldn't use anything slower
than 80ns myself.

The HDD is SCSI. That was the only upgrade i could preform. 250mb now.

There are a variety of other upgrades you can use.

I picked out a 50MHz Daystar Powercache for mine, and you can also get
68040 upgrades, and PowerPC upgrades for a IIci.

For ram, the only thing i could suggest for getting ram that you know is
good and hasn't been handled is to find someone selling a whole bust
computer for spares then you could transfer the ram sticks across.

If you are willing to pay, you can get new RAM. It's very, very
expensive. They have to keep making small quantities to support
long-running systems.

There is a Sun reseller or two on eBay who dumps RAM frequently, a lot
of which will work in Apple systems.

Make sure you check our IIci to see if it needs parity RAM. You can
find out how to tell at various web sites.

To find out what other pre-powermac computers use that kind of ram then go
to my website at: http://megamacs.tripod.com (You will only get two popups)
I will have to check why the IIci link is missing.

Also, take a look at www.lowendmac.com and the links listed there for more
information.
