Re: iOS 5.1.1 is out Voiceover going silent bug

2012-05-11 Thread Ricardo Walker
compact is the lower quality. To use it, check the box. If you want the
premium voice, leave it unchecked. Note, you need to be connected to wifi for
the premium voiceo to actually download

Hello Les.

Interesting message from you as I'm buying my Trecker Breeze after Mark's
excellent message on this list, aand for the fact Ariadne Gps died in a middle
of an important journey!

It's £585 here in the UK with Postcodes, (zip codes) for your reference.

I publically thank Mark again as I would have not considered it if it wasn't
for his message. So the list is good for somethings even if it's not I phone
related. Bless Mark.

Settings, general, Accessibility, Voiceover and scroll down and you'll see
an option for either turning off or on the compact voice.

Ricardo,

good point, I'm also using the high quality premium voice.

which of course all ties into my point about speed.

those using higher speeds tend not to use the high quality premium voice
synth, as it does not scale as well.

so, you have a good point here.

Google Play books, Was Re: How To Revert To Old Apps

2012-05-11 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Katey,

The frustrating thing is that every other control in this app is readable with
VO, but it is not possible to turn pages. (I'm disjointedly reminded of a large
wheelchair-accessible restroom with bars with a high step leading into it.)

I looked Google Play books up on Apple Vis, and the review says that Google has
been made aware of the situation. I don't suppose it would hurt to write to
them.

In any case, you might try looking for Google Books.ipa in the recycle bin, or
if you use Windows Backup, see if it's there. I successfully restored Google
Books, and I am s relieved.

RE: how to put songson a jailbroken i phone?

Hi Ramy,
Even without the phone being Jail Broken, you can put songs on the phone
using something like Phone Drive which allows you to use HTTP or FTP. It
suggests a folder structure but you can also create your own directories.

And, can't I use the same way to put contacts also?

Subject: Question about Navigon and using the traffic live add-on

Hi all,
I just bought the traffic live add-on, as I figured given that I currently
live right near New York City and will be moving near Seattle next week,
such an add-on could really come in handy when driving in the car with my
husband-to-be or family. More specifically, we're picking up my fiancé from
JFK airport today, which tends to have traffic going toward it. I put the
root into Navigon so that I had an idea of what we'd be dealing with
distance and traffic wise. I also wanted to be prepared to use the add-on
when we actually drive out there later. I see that if I go to
options/traffic messages while on the navigation screen, I can see where
traffic is. Traffic information for your root is presented in several
messages. One message per each instance of traffic. So that part is
accessible. But according to a Youtube video, I should be able to tell
Navigon to go around that traffic. There are unlabeled buttons on each
traffic message screen, so I tested those. But they seem to just navigate to
the previous or next traffic message. Useful, but not what I wanted. So my
question is, have any of you found this go around button accessibly? Did you
have to have someone sighted find it for you? Is there some other way I or a
sighted relative should be going about seeking alternative routes around
traffic?

Any info would be appreciated.

Hi,

one more thing. A friend of mine said she had this problem ever since
getting her 4S. She recently upgrade to the premium voice, and it hasn't
gone silent yet. I was wondering, are those having this issue using the
compact or premium voice? I'm using premium, and never encountered this
bug.

Re: Calling All Chess Players For Help

2012-05-11 Thread Scott Howell
HIARCS is not and as far as I can determine will ever be accessible. I tried
working with the developer on/off for over a year and I just got the usual "I'm
going to work on that, but". Which in the end was pretty much telling me "I'm
not going to do it."
So, if you want to try contacting him Mark to see if he would still consider
making it accessible, good luck. This was one of the first chess apps I
purchased and I keep it around as a reminder like with Documents To Go as
examples of where some deves will blow so much smoke you get anal emphysema.

Re: Longer cord?

2012-05-11 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
I have one that is stocked by the Apple store, its a Griffin one that is 3
metres long, around 9 foot or so.

it is a good quality lead which is thicker than the regular Apple lead. you can
get it directly from Apple online or in their stores.

To go with this, I bought the iPad 10w charger extension kit, this is meant for
the iPad and increases the charging lead length from the regular, Apple
supplied, 30cm or about a foot, to 6 foot.

This lead is made up of two parts, a mains plug to power adaptor block, which
is about 5 foot of the lead, and then a regular Apple USB to iOS device
connector, making up the final foot or so.

I replaced the regular Apple cable with this kit, with my Griffin 9 foot one
giving me a whopping 13 - 14 foot lead.

The nice thing about this combination is that it goes straight from the wall
outlet, and, as it has the higher performance iPad charger capability, it will
charge your iPhone notably quicker than the regular, supplied, iPhone charger.

Note, Apple approve this extension kit for use with iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off

2012-05-11 Thread Eric SS
I would like to point out there is no mention in Settings of a Premium
voice. You either have Compact voice on or off. It is misleading to talk
about voices in any other way, even if in practical terms that is the
meaning.

Here is where I am confused. When I look at my settings, I see "Use Compact
Voice On". Does that mean I am currently using the non-Compact voice or that
the Compact voice is on. If I tap that button and it changes to "Use Compact
Voice Off", is the compact voice off and I am using the "premium" voice or
will it begin using the "premium", Compact voice when I tap that button and
it changes to "Use Compact Voice On".

There is probably some engineer's logic to these toggles, but I do not see
them as consistent throughout settings. Sometimes it means this is the state
you are in, but other times it means this is what you will change to.

I am simple, so any simple explanation will be appreciated.

To my ear, I am using the original VoiceOver voice when my setting is "Use
Compact Voice On". I have been told this is the compact voice and not the
high-quality, "premium" voice. But, if I switch to that other one, it sounds
gravelly and distorted. I may not have perfect pitch or all the qualities of
some master musicians' ears, but I do have good hearing "um, when I listen,
so says my wife). :)

Away with me...

Eric

Hi,

Re: VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off

2012-05-11 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I honestly don't run into these inconsistencies in IOS. At least not that I
can remember. In this case, if compact is checked, that means you want to use
the compact voice, and voiceover will use this. Unchecked means you prefer to
use the higher quality voice, and when connected to wifi, your device will
attempt to download this voice for use.

RE: Calling All Chess Players For Help

2012-05-11 Thread Richard Turner
You are most welcome.
I bought both paid versions to support such helpful app developers. They
both jumped right on the idea of making their apps accessible and did it in
a very short time.
I believe Chess-Wise was first.

Enjoy,

Ah! Thank you Richard,

It's starting to come back to me; HiArcs Chess was never considered to be
accessible but promised to be so in the future. I guess I forgot to delete
it. Chesswise and Shredder chess were the two I was supposed to download
but forgot.

Problem resolved.

Again, thank you ever so much for your quick and most helpful reply.

Shredder chess and chess-wise, are both accessible.
They both have a free version.

Re: Simplest Way to Convert ITunes music files to mp3or for use on the Victor Reader Stream

2012-05-11 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

you need to first select this in iTunes preferences. Under the general tab,
press the import settings button. Then select mp3, and your bit rate. Now you
will find the option to convert to mp3 in the advanced menu as well as in the
context menu when brought up.

RE: Simplest Way to Convert ITunes music files to mp3or for use on the Victor Reader Stream

2012-05-11 Thread Reinhard Stebner
To convert a song to mp3, follow these steps:

1) Open iTunes.

2) Press ctrl + comma to enter the preferences dialog.

3) Press shift + tab until focus lands on import settings.

4) Press enter.

5) Press tab until focus lands on the import using combo box.

6) Press down arrow until focus lands on mp3 encoder.

7) Press enter to select this item and exit out of the import settings
dialog.

8) Press tab until focus is placed on the OK button and then press
enter to save and exit out of the settings dialog.

9) Select a song that you would like to convert to mp3.

10) Press the applications key to bring up the context menu.

11) Press either down or up arrow until focus lands on the menu item
entitled convert to mp3

12) Press enter on this menu item to convert one song to mp3. Know that
the original song will still be in your library and it will be necessary to
delete it.

Please let me know if the above steps make sense to you or if you have any
additional questions.

Eric,

The higher quality or premium voice is in use when the setting is off, i.e. not

So not compacting your voice, equals better higher quality voice.

note, that when you turn compact voice off, you may not notice a difference for
a good few hours whilst the none compact voice is downloaded.

it is better to have it off.

it is now possible to downgrade your a5 i devices

2012-05-11 Thread alex wallis

Hi list,
in case nobody else has got around to posting this yet,
I thought I would pass on the information, that a new version of the
tool called redsn0w has just been released.
this version offers support for downgrading a5 devices, those being the
ipad 2,3 and iPhone 4s.

I think the tool can be used to downgrade non a5 devices as well.
Please note, that for the downgrade you do need to have saved your shsh
blobs for the ios version you want to downgrade to.
Also, these blobs are personalised to your phone, so you can't use
someone elses if you didn't save them.
if you didn't save them, sorry your out of luck, in order to have saved
them you would have to have been jail broken.
I am going to downgrade now til a new jailbreak is out for 5.1.1, as I
did save my blobs.
I guess for anyone who did save them and who wants to go back to a much
less buggy ios version than 5.1 and above this method will also be
useful, as no more unlock or braille display issues if you go back.

please follow the below link for more information and instructions.
http://is.gd/ZiNCj3
also, you will need both the firmware file for the latest iOS upgrade,
and the firmware file for the version you want to downgrade to.
There is a link in the blog entry comments where to get the files, when
you download them, your web browser will rename them to zip files, so
you will need to manually rename them to have the extension .ipsw on the
end.
Note I would suggest only change the extension, the part after the
period, as I have no idea what happens if you rename the file completely.

I hope people find the above useful.
Alex.

RE: VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off

2012-05-11 Thread Eric SS
Neil, thanks a ton for that explanation.

I guess I will have to try installing the higher quality voice again. When
it was first released, I did do as you described and I think I got the new
voice, but as I said, it sure does not sound better or high quality to my
ear. It sounds very rough.

You have tweaked my curiosity, though, and I will set "use compact voice
off" and leave the phone plugged in overnight to see what happens. People
have praised the higher quality, which I never did hear, and I figured our
interpretations of quality just had to be way different.

Thanks again!

Re: VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off

2012-05-11 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Eric,

there is a difference, trust me, its not Bang and Olufsen verse Amstrad, but,
is certainly notable.

The place where most go wrong is they switch to compact off, i.e. higher
quality on, but, do not leave it enough time for the handset to download the
better synth.

be sure to leave it over night, to make sure your device is on WiFi and plugged
in, just for belt and braces.

also, I'd recommend in the morning power cycling off and on again.

2012-05-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, from what I know, simply copying and pasting won't convert it. Also,
you will need to be careful if the iTunes song or media is drm

it's not allowed as a discussion on this list.

Re: Voiceover Bug

2012-05-11 Thread Wayne Merritt
Are you sure that the voice is not on? I ask because that often
happens to me when I take my phone from the docking station and what
has actually happened is the voice volume has been turned down. I
don't know why it happens, but I fix it by putting one finger in the
status bar and then repeatedly press the volume up button. Pretty soon
I will hear the voice speaking the status bar information. This has
been going on for awhile, since before iOS 5 anyway.

Are you sure that the voice is not on? I ask because that often happens to
me when I take my phone from the docking station and what has actually
happened is the voice volume has been turned down. I don't know why it
happens, but I fix it by putting one finger in the status bar and then
repeatedly press the volume up button. Pretty soon I will hear the voice
speaking the status bar information. This has been going on for awhile,
since before iOS 5 anyway.

Best way to view the group emails?

2012-05-11 Thread Avnish Chopra
Hi! Can someone please tell me what is the best way to read the
emails. I mean I use the iPhone to have them read out to me. I find I
get a lot of repetition and the emails come on mixed up. I get a lot
of links read-out to me and it's no fun at all. I wish all the emails
could come without on the text before and after you could make feeding
so much easier. Also it would make more sense. Can you please suggest?
Thank you and many blessings!
This email was dictated to my iPhone. So please excuse the typos!
Thanks again! es

RE: Voiceover Bug

Hi Carla.

I have a dock for my iPhone, and sometimes when I remove the phone from it I
have no speech. What I do is just raise the volume of the speech and it
comes back. Just hit the up volume button a few times, and hopefully this
will work for you. I agree that it's a nuisance.

Have a good day, and don't work too hard.

If you have opened Cydia before they should have been saved for the
version of iOs you were running at the time. Its also possible to save

Re: Looking for an App to Remove Vocals from Songs

2012-05-11 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

The app VocalZap does a pretty good job of removing the vocals on the fly,
depending on how the song was recorded. You can take the vocals out or put them
back as you listen. If I remember right, it's also free.

Best,
Anna

Check out EyeSight - The App that Replaces Handheld Magnifiers and CCTV's

2012-05-11 Thread Andy Lane
just bought this app and I have to say I am speechless. It is a specifically
low vision app designed specifically for low vision users on a device with
built in a built in screen reader and yet it is completely, totally
inaccessible. This is simply unacceptable. I understood from the app
description I would have to disable vo for gestures but they didnt even take
the time and effort to fill in the accessibility labels. literally
flabergasted. Mainstream devs manage this so what if I may ask is the point of
field experts? These are the basics lads I will be contacting apple for a
refund. I am very sorry to be harsh but I have thought about this for a few
minutes before posting to ensure I am not being unfair on the dev and the more
I think about it the worse it seems. to miss accessibility labels designed to
assist vi users on an app for vi users... wow, just wow. I know it isnt
designed for blind users and I am not blind but the buttons are in a
colourscheme I cant see which of course is no issue as I can turn vo on to make
my selections then turn it off to use gestures except that of course I cant do
that.

Re: getting refunds for unauthorized third-party charges

2012-05-11 Thread Brent Harding
I finally did get Sprint to give me the bill adjustment for it, but not
after earning it on hold with several other companies, all fairly nameless.
The company Sprint said billed it wasn't, but claimed they saw some of the
messages and gave me a number to another nameless company who let's the hold
time out into the standard Asterisk greeting for "extension number" is
unavailable. There was no way I'd leave a message there. I called the other
company back again, and another rep transferred me to some other nameless
place I kept on the phone awhile because they claimed to have no record of
my number, and I told them who I thought of calling and would give their
number, and they seemed fine with that. I called company 1 one last time,
and they sent me to what sounded like the place that lets their extensions
just time out, and I got some foreign-sounding person who said a check would
be sent for a refund from a company with no meaningful name. Maybe giving
them my address was dumb, but I figured Sprint really can't help. The last
call was to Sprint one more time, and I got a nice young-sounding lady who
understood the issue and gave me the credit so I have a credit balance on my
account as I just paid my total bill minus the $9.99 charge, but there must
be fees on that charge also as the 5 percent sales tax would only be about
$.50. She claims to have put a block on any more billing of this type, but
the only email I got was for the bill adjustment, so I'll see what comes of
it on June's bill. One lady from the local store said those blocks only
block the reception, but there is no way to return or decline authorization
for these charges, not sure which sprint person is right, the local one, or
the one I got routed to when I dialed the 888 number.

That sounds still like Sprint is giving you the run-around. Since the
company is billing Sprint, who is in turn billing you, there has to be
something that Sprint can do. It's annoying for sure, but I would keep at
it and if all else fails, then have Sprint change your cell number at no
charge to you. Unfortunately that would be a last resort because of the
hassle of giving out your new number. I wish I had a better solution, but
from working in the cell phone field in the past, I have an idea of what
can be done. If you have to be a pest, then that's what you have to do by
keep calling Sprint, logging who you talk to, and speak to a supervisor,
or a level 2 person if at all possible.

She said that Sprint can't and won't reverse it because it's up to these
people, likely overseas, or the people you get when you call their 800

check, which is a hastle, but I wonder why Sprint can't just deal with
this mess when it's on their bill?

I had something similar happen with me and AT&T. They did 3 things.

1. Reversed the charge.

2. Contacted the company on my behalf and had them stop any future
billing to my AT&T account.

3. Put a block on my phone lines so that text charges can no longer
happen without a code.

Of course, the company in question didn't have my credit care number
and so this may be a different situation. However I've had to change
my card number before due to other problems and I know it can be APITA.

Re: Check out See It - Video Magnifier

2012-05-11 Thread Chuck Dean
I just tried this app, it does not help me.
It can magnify some, but the "zoom" does very little. I need about 8 X
to read 12point type, and this does not come close.
Also, in normal room lighting, the iPhones screen was washed out
enough that it was difficult to see.
It is no better than any of the other magnifiers I have tried...but,
as they say on the car commercials, your mileage may be different.

It gets a big thumbs down from me .

Re: Trekker Breeze On Sale

2012-05-11 Thread Chuck Dean
I had, still have but do not use, one of the original Trekker /
Maestro in a HP P D A.
The Trekker was awesome as a GPS device. The Maestro was OK, except
its web browser left something to be desired.
I would like to see Humanware develop an iPhone app with the Trekker
software using voice overs speech.

I'd pay $200 for that.

I don't know of any. The only ones I know of are for Windows unfortunately.
As far as games go, it'd be the least complicated, interfacewise, to do, but
I don't know how hard it would be to tie something into the sites many of us

can you copy nd past outside of edit fields?

2012-05-11 Thread Danielle McCullough
Hello everyone,

So I have mastered selecting, copying and pasting in edit fields with quick nav
off, with my bluetooth keyboard, but what I am wondering, is if you can select
a line, say from my twitter client, and copy and paste it. For example, I want
to select a tweet from one account, so that I can paste it in to a new tweet
from another. It's not appropriate to retweet it fromt eh acount that I read it
on, for vaguely professional resons. Basically, it's a tech tweet that doesn't
apply to the reason of having and using said account, but I would like to send
it from my personal account. I don't want to just DM it to myself and then
change accounts, go in to dm's, A, because it would be a faff, and B because
you can't retweet dm's anyway, so I am wondering how I can do this?

Can anyone help at all?

Best wishes,

Danielle

Ringtone maker

2012-05-11 Thread Jessica Barr

Hi,
There is an app called Ringtone Maker that supposedly allows you
to make ringtones from songs on your phone and put them directly
onto your phone; however, I tried to use it and ran into trouble.
If anyone has successfully used this app, or if there's another,
more accessible app that will put the ringtones directly onto the
phone, I would love to hear about it, too.

Re: Ringtone Maker

2012-05-11 Thread Todd Bernhard
Quite a few users here use my AutoRingtone app. It lets you create
Talking Caller ID ringtones that announce who is calling. And it's
voiceover friendly. There are free versions with a subset of the
voices. Just search for autoringtone or ringtones uncensored, which
is good for text messages as it can speak anything you type.

Re: getting refunds for unauthorized third-party charges

2012-05-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hey there. I'm sorry you had to go through such an ordeal with all this.
From what I understand, if a block is put on your account for
third-party charges, then it doesn't matter who tries to charge Sprint
for things. It's sort of like the old days of having to block 900 calls
from your local land line service. It prevents those calls from going
through so they can't bill the phone company, who in turn, bills you. At
least in regards to AT&T, the block I have isn't really a block, it's a
code. So if a company starts to initiate a service to charge AT&T who
will charge me, I have to give a code to allow the overwrite. Not sure
if Sprint can or will do this. You might ask in case a full block isn't
possible. They just have to have something in place to protect the
customer from this.

sounded like the place that lets their extensions just time out, and I
got some foreign-sounding person who said a check would be sent for a
refund from a company with no meaningful name. Maybe giving them my
address was dumb, but I figured Sprint really can't help. The last call
was to Sprint one more time, and I got a nice young-sounding lady who
understood the issue and gave me the credit so I have a credit balance
on my account as I just paid my total bill minus the $9.99 charge, but
there must be fees on that charge also as the 5 percent sales tax would
only be about $.50. She claims to have put a block on any more billing
of this type, but the only email I got was for the bill adjustment, so
I'll see what comes of it on June's bill. One lady from the local store
said those blocks only block the reception, but there is no way to

That sounds still like Sprint is giving you the run-around. Since the
company is billing Sprint, who is in turn billing you, there has to be
something that Sprint can do. It's annoying for sure, but I would keep
at it and if all else fails, then have Sprint change your cell number
at no charge to you. Unfortunately that would be a last resort because
of the hassle of giving out your new number. I wish I had a better
solution, but from working in the cell phone field in the past, I have
an idea of what can be done. If you have to be a pest, then that's
what you have to do by keep calling Sprint, logging who you talk to,
and speak to a supervisor, or a level 2 person if at all possible.

I had something similar happen with me and AT&T. They did 3 things.

1. Reversed the charge.

2. Contacted the company on my behalf and had them stop any future
billing to my AT&T account.

3. Put a block on my phone

Re: getting refunds for unauthorized third-party charges

And if they wont do an acceptable job of protecting against this
nonsense, remind them you can hire someone else to be your cell
provider. Remind them contract traps are not a substitute for
acceptable service for ever and the playing nice only when the
contract is running out crap won't cut it.

2012-05-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hey all. I appreciate the information offered at the start of this
thread. And I understand it was discussed recently in another thread
which concerned GPS offerings of the iPhone as well. However the last
several messages about this aren't really related to iOS stuff. I would
ask that this thread be closed. If some of you still wish to discuss
this, there is always direct email for that.

Thanks.

Using large text feature in accessibility

2012-05-11 Thread Louie P. (Pete) Nalda
I can't make this in message bodies, only in composing text. It does effect
headings, messaging, and notes. I could use zoom, but like the large text
better. Thanks in advance.

Sling Box

2012-05-11 Thread Jan Stirbens
Hello,

Does anyone use Sling Box on the iPhone 4S with voice over? I purchased
Sling Box and am having trouble getting voice over to read the screen. If
anyone can give me some pointers, I sure would appreciate it.

Thank you.

Jan
