another cloud storage system that works equally well with iOS devices, Macs,
 and Windows PCs.

I am delighted to report that Microsoft's SkyDrive is now completely
VoiceOver accessible and allows access to the SkyDrive directly from Finder
in OS X and from Explorer in Windows 7. The iOS app is VoiceOver
accessible, simple, and easy to use.

Microsoft SkyDrive offers 7GB of free storage space, 2GB more than does
 Apple's iCloud.

To those who may not know, iCloud, in its current implementation, does not
allow for non-iWork documents and/or non Apple file syncing nor does it
allow for direct access in Windows Explorer. In short, iCloud, unlike
iDisk, is not meant to be used as a remote hard drive to which you may place
 any kind of file.

To get SkyDrive on the computer platform of your choice, you will need to
download a free Microsoft utility that simply configures your chosen system
to see SkyDrive; it does not add any overhead to your device unlike other
 free cloud storage options.

To get started, visit the app store on your iOS device and type in SkyDrive
or, from your favorite web browser in the OS of your choice, go to
 http://skydrive.live.com

If you don't already have a Windows ID, you will need to create one.

RE: From iDisk to SkyDrive

2012-05-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Less,

1.
Let me be perfectly clear, iDisk is/was a separate service from iCloud. I
know it's a little confusing but Apple has been working on different
products that sometimes appear to converge then diverge, from time-to-time.

So, iCloud will not be ending, in any way shape or form, on June 30, 2012.
Only the iDisk which, if you don't use, you will not notice.

2.
As for usernames are concerned, each cloud service or service provider
requires that one has some way of being identified, right? With Apple, one
needs an Apple ID. The same is true for Google and Microsoft is no
different.

The Windows ID I spoke of will be used to log you into the Skydrive. This
is completely separate from any Apple ID needed to download the app onto
your device.

All things being equal, you will go to the Apple App Store to download the
Skydrive App, using your Apple ID to do so as usual. When you're ready to
begin using the actual SkyDrive, you will need to login to the system with
your Windows ID.

iControlPad, was - Re: BlindSquare

2012-05-23 Thread Rob Harris
Fascinating! I think that control pad thing has tons of mileage for us if
app writers wanted to get one to play with and ponder the possibilities of.
In conjunction with some of the braille type input apps for example? So how
much is that device, I didn't get that far to find it.

The app itself, not sure how much I'd like it, whether there's content
for it in the UK, whether you have to pay a 4square service charge for the
content; I hate hidden costs!

The service must relate to a commercial enterprise of sorts, so content
might depend on how well that service was marketed to know if there's enough
useful content for an individual's area.

I passed a related app like this which gave you the option to select more
or less any place in the world for which it had content, then you navigate
around like virtual exploring. I thought it might be a good way to learn a
way round before going to a place. It was not blind specific and proved
pretty inaccessible alas!

Re: Reading Kindle Books on the iPhone

2012-05-23 Thread Chanelle Allen
Hi Keith,

Getting books from iBooks is the most accessible. Before I had iBooks installed
on my iPhone, I would purchase Kindle books and then convert them with some
software designed to unlock or get rid of the license. I don't know if it would
be all right to post directions and the set of files that someone has developed
to the list. I can tell you that I found the information via Google. A post to
Top Tech Tidbits last year gave a download link to a Zip file with the needed
programs and instructions. I don't think that the files include anything for
converting to EPUB. Stanza will do the job though as well as a free online EPUB
converter.
I apologize if I have said too much.

Hth,
Chanelle

Hello Everyone,

I am cross posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing

With the end of iDisk, Apple's cloud storage system that came into being
during the Mobile Me era, slated for June 30, 2012, I've been searching for
another cloud storage system that works equally well with iOS devices, Macs,
and Windows PCs.

Enjoy,

Mark

I would turn off Facebook. I do not need to know as soon as someone tags me in

will telephone me for that sort of important information, too. Weather widget:
I definitely do not need to know when it is raining outside; if I am outside, I

I only have telephone, messages, reminders, calendar and Navigon showing in

Okay, I finally got home to some wifi and have been able to download the
app. It looks really interesting and I like the interface. The app will
automatically read out details from POI's around you. The data is as stated
taken straight from foursquare. This is not a 'yellow pages' type model for
POI data as someone guessed at. Also the app is available outside the US,
i'm in Australia and the app description states some of the other
non-english languages for which there are localisation's.

I haven't been able to go for a walk to see how it responds but sitting here
at home I can see the direction and distance to a number of things around
me. I got the app to give me my current location and I got the street name
and distance and direction to the nearest corner.

On the negative side, the whole interface seems to frees up and or go slow
when the GPS signal is poor. The app does self voice the fact that the GPS
is poor as well though.

BTW, You can turn off self voicing if you like.

Anyway i have only had a brief look so far but definitely don't regret
spending $12 on it. Not that I want to encourage more expensive apps but
lets face it, I spend that much on a whim for a few cups of coffee.

You need to select the radius you want to search in. There is a
button in the upper right corner to change this setting. Double tap

When you open Blind Square the screen will display a list of
categories such as My Places, shared places, arts and entertainment,
 etc.
If you select a category, such as Food, it will say search. Double tap
and it will search for restaurants within the the radius you have
selected. Now it will search, this takes a few seconds and then will
list the restaurants in that radius.
I have not figured out how the list is compiled, it is not by distance
 or alphabetical.
Double tap on the desired item and the app will give you distance and
direction via a clock face. For example, Applebees 390 feet at 11
o'clock. Since it is dependant on the compass, the iPhone must be held
parallel to the ground with the top pointing in front of you.

Next to each category there is an on off button. If you turn the
category on the app will automatically search in the selected radius
 and read the items off.

 Hope this helps,
 Chuck

Hello Kim and others,

The article you referred to points out the major issues, I found that
changing email from Push to even 15 minutes makes a difference. WiFi
also does take a fair amount of battery, I typically keep it on though
unless I am out and about most of the day. Most people who criticise
the iPhone's battery performance don't take into account that most
people also use their iPhone to do way more stuff and to me the
battery does OK if I can get through the day doing what I need to do.
I believe investing in an external battery case or battery pack is the
way to go here. I prefer just an external battery since I have a very
nice leather case and prefer my iPhone to be as slim as possible and
any battery case adds a bit of bulk. The New Trend IMP1000 which
somebody just asked about yesterday has good reviews and a wopping
11,000 MA with 41 WH and that allows you to charge your phone up to 6
times before having to recharge the battery. It's of course a bit on
the larger side with about 4 inches by 4 inches by a bit over an inch
thick (think portable external hard drive or about as wide and long as
your iPhone is long and 3 times as thick). Anyhow, there are tons of
options out there ranging from as small as a good sized USB stick to
my Brunton Impel which weighs 2 pounds, is a bit larger than an old
VHS tape, but I can fully charge my laptop on it and my iPhone and
it's still not dead with 145 WH (Watt Hours) it has 3.5 times the
capacity of the New Trend IMP1000 and you could charge a new iPad
close to 3 times. Best to go to a store and ask them to show you a few
options and pick one that meets your budget and that you like.

Take care,

All you need to do is add them to iTunes, then sync the phone. They should
automatically be added in a collection called PDFs.

Re: Extending battery life on the 4s

2012-05-23 Thread Kimber Gardner
Excellent point re the wifi. I've noticed when I am not at home, my
phone is constantly prompting me to join this or that wifi network.

On 5/23/12, Sieghard siegh...@live.ca wrote:

 Take care,
 Sieghar

One little glichy area you may need to address is a problem some have

When you open Blind Square the screen will display a list

If you select a category, such as Food, it will say
  search. Double tap
and it will search for restaurants within the the radius

  and then will
list the restaurants in that radius.
I have not figured out how the list is compiled, it is not
  by distance
  or alphabetical.
Double tap on the desired item and the app will give you
  distance and
direction via a clock face. For example, Applebees 390
  feet at 11
o'clock. Since it is dependant on the compass, the iPhone
  must be held
parallel to the ground with the top pointing in front of

Next to each category there is an on off button. If you
  turn the
category on the app will automatically search in the
  selected radius
  and read the items off.

  Hope this helps,

Hi, if I remember correctly, you need to have a Bluetooth ear piece on.
This way you can dock the iPhone and listen to your music, then use your
Bluetooth to answer an incoming call.

Again, if I'm remembering correctly, it worked like a charm. :-)

Hi all,

Do you have a favorite bedside iPhone iPod dock?

I don't mind if it is just a speaker dock or clock radio.

A remote would be a nice bonus but not necessary.

I'd like a small/medium footprint, good sound, and charge my iPhone4s

Nano 5th gen.

Getting music onto iPhone

2012-05-23 Thread Richard Claridge
Hi all.
I have a question which is probably a really stupid beginner question,
which is odd as I've had my iPhone for over 2 years.
Is there any way of getting music onto the music app on the phone
other than by sincing with iTunes?
I ask this because I have been sent an attachment via eMail which is
music, and I was wondering if there is a simple way to open that
attachment on the phone and get it into my music. Or even if theres
another app I can save and play this on.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards
Richard

RE: iPad, the email app, and gmail

There should be a move to button next to the archive button. Click on that
and you can then move the selected email to the trash or any other fold you
want. You can also just double tap and hold on the email from within that
particular account and when you hhear a little chime, make a swiping motion
and you'll get a message asking to confirm that you wish to delete the
email.

OK, not sure what headings would do or involve so for the time being I'll
let it go; further explanation of headers is welcome.

Sounds like you have the rotor set to headings and you are flicking up or
down hence it triggering the header not found message. Nothing to worry
about.

Re: iPad, the email app, and gmail

2012-05-23 Thread Garth Humphreys
If you want, you change the Archive button into a Delete button for the gmail
account. Just go and have a dig around in the settings app. go into mail,
ontacts and calendars then into the gmail account in question. You will find
that message archiving is turned on, turn it off and you'll have a delete key.

In settings, mail/contacts/calendars, in the Gmail settings, there is a setting
that says archive messages. If you turn this off, a delete button will appear
in your messages, and you no longer havve to move them to the trash.

Hope this helps,

Re: Favorite bedside dock?

2012-05-23 Thread Wayne Merritt
I have the Philips Fidelio DS 3000 iPhone/iPod dock. It retails for
around $80, but I've seen it on Amazon for between $56 and $70. The
dock is nothing special, just a speaker with volume up/down buttons.
However, given that I can do all I need to with the various iPhone
apps I've got, I don't really need anything else. For instance, I use
the Alarmed app to wake up to. There is a Fidelio app but it is not
accessible. However, the dock will continue to prompt you to install
the app if it is not on your device. I downloaded it and then put it
in my Utilities folder of unused apps. Another great thing I like
about this dock is that I can put my iPhone on it even with an Otter
Box case on the phone. It may take a few tries at times to get the
phone on right. I have also bought a cable that someone recommended on
this list several months ago to go between the dock and my phone. This
way, I don't have to worry about constantly getting the phone to sit
right on the dock before it works. I think there are other Fidelio
docks out there that have extra bells and whistles, but all I really
wanted was a speaker dock.

Regards,
Wayne Merritt

Hi, if I remember correctly, you need to have a Bluetooth ear piece on. This
way you can dock the iPhone and listen to your music, then use your
Bluetooth to answer an incoming call.
Again, if I'm remembering correctly, it worked like a charm. :-) Traci

 Hi all,

Do you have a favorite bedside iPhone iPod dock?

I don't mind if it is just a speaker dock or clock radio.

A remote would be a nice bonus but not necessary.

I'd like a small/medium footprint, good sound, and charge my iPhone4s

 Look forward to your replies.

If you want, you change the Archive button into a Delete button for the gmail
account. Just go and have a dig around in the settings app. go into mail,
ontacts and calendars then into the gmail account in question. You will find
that message archiving is turned on, turn it off and you'll have a delete key.

All at once? No. But you can click on the edit button at the top of the
screen from within an email or in the all inbox folder and then select the
emails you wish to delete and then click on the delete button at the bottom of
the screen and presto, they’re gone.

There should be a move to button next to the archive button. Click on
that and you can then move the selected email to the trash or any other fold
you want. You can also just double tap and hold on the email from within that
particular account and when you hhear a little chime, make a swiping motion and
you’ll get a message asking to confirm that you wish to delete the email.

In settings, mail/contacts/calendars, in the Gmail settings, there is a
setting that says archive messages. If you turn this off, a delete button will
appear in your messages, and you no longer havve to move them to the trash.

importing MP3 files for playback in Downcast

2012-05-23 Thread Jennifer Sutton

Greetings:

I believe I've read on this list that it's possible to bring MP3
files into Downcast for playback (rather than my bringing them into
Music, for example). I've got podcasts working fine; it's
already-downloaded files and folders of files that I'd like to import.

I see where to do this in Downcast, but I think where I'm having
trouble is with iTunes.

I'd appreciate it if someone could help me understand what I need to
do in ITunes to share the files with Downcast. I'm using Windows.

Can I put MP3 file-sets into the automatically import into ITunes
folder? That's how I typically import books and such. I don't have
ITunes using a music library or anything like that. I like to control
ITunes as much as I can.

If not, should I bring in the MP3s via Music?

Is it home sharing that I want, or some other kind of sharing that
I'm missing? I thought Home-Sharing related to sharing on my network.

Do I need to change something related to Downcast when I see it in
the list of app.s in ITunes?

Sorry to be asking so many questions, but I'm trying to document the
approaches I've been trying in hopes it'll speed an answer and make
whatever simple step I am missing clear.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Jennifer

Re: Favorite bedside dock?

2012-05-23 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi all. I don't have any specific models, but if you are looking at
getting something a bit cheaper than $100, Wal-Mart has some iPhone docs
which are alarm clocks, ETC as well and I've sen them for around $40 or
$50. I'm not sure how accessible they are or what the deal is, but
paying over $100 for something just to be your alarm clock seems a bit
eccentric to me. Then again, people say the same thing about me when I
spend money on favor points with Storm8 games. So to each his own,
right? *smile*.

I don't mind if it is just a speaker dock or clock radio.

A remote would be a nice bonus but not necessary.

I'd like a small/medium footprint, good sound, and charge my iPhone4s

Re: importing MP3 files for playback in Downcast

2012-05-23 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Jennifer,

I don't think you can import files from iTunes into Downcast, though I could be
wrong about that. However, if you download files from other apps, such as
Dropbox or Filer, you can import those files by selecting them, doing a
double-tap and hold, and choosing Open With, then Downcast. You can also use
iTunes file sharing to have iTunes copy files into Downcast.

Best,
Anna

You need to select the radius you want to search in.
There is a

Double tap
it then swipe up or down to select the search radius.

When you open Blind Square the screen will display a list of
categories such as My Places, shared places, arts and
entertainment, etc.
If you select a category, such as Food, it will say
 search. Double
tap and it will search for restaurants within the the
 radius you
have selected.  Now it will search, this takes a few
 seconds and
then will list the restaurants in that radius.
I have not figured out how the list is compiled, it is not by
distance or alphabetical.
Double tap on the desired item and the app will give
 you distance
and direction via a clock face. For example, Applebees
 390 feet at
11 o'clock. Since it is dependant on the compass, the
 iPhone must
be held parallel to the ground with the top pointing in
 front of
you.

Next to each category there is an on off button. If you
 turn the
category on the app will automatically search in the selected
radius and read the items off.

Hope this helps,

Hi Patti,

I'm new to IPhone. Which bible apps will you recommend? I need a bible app

typing the first two or three letters in the search box.

You can write me off list.

I am relentless on getting Christianbook Distributors to make their app
accessible with voiceover. This is one fight I'm not giving up on.

I've written them each time their app is updated but still useless for us to
use.

I don't know if anybody else cares about this but I do.

My notes are getting more and more, shall we say, firm, grin. There are
other book apps that are accessible with voiceover, I don't understand why
this one isn't and I told them that it is only right and fair they look into
this.

If they want to be an outreach to other people, they need to do all they can
to do that, and that includes making reading material accessible to people
with reading disabilities, audio is just not enough any more.

Just thought you'd want to know about my crusade, grin.

However, I'm interested in how well it works.
So far, I have not really had any success with my iPhone 4S.

Re: importing MP3 files for playback in Downcast

2012-05-23 Thread Jennifer Sutton

Dear Scott and all:

These directions worked very well for me. Thank you.

I figured out that, at least for me, my phone had to be connected to
my computer, or so it seemed, anyway.

But in future, I may try using something like Filer or Dropbox,
instead. I think Dropbox would be faster.

To be clear, I didn't want to use ITunes Music; I just was thinking
that I might have to since these files are MP3s. But of course, that
was not the way to go; Scott's directions were.

Thanks to all for your help, both on and off-list.

Btw, apologies for the doubled posting; for some reason, my first
message had gotten trapped as spam.

Best,
Jennifer

Hello Jennifer,
In iTunes you will need to make sure that your iPhone is
the item within the sources list that is in focus. Then hit the
tab key until you come to the Apps checkbox and then hit the space
bar to select it. Then you need to hit tab again and you will come
a list of all of the apps on you iPhone, hit tab again and you
should come to an area that will say something like Apps that can
share files with itunes.. Arrow down to Downcast and then hit the
tab key again and you will come to the place where you put the
files that you want to share with Downcast. Just hit the add
button and then add the files, once you have done this the only
thing left to do is to synche your phone and then from Downcast on
the phone you can import the files into Downcast.
I hope that this isn't to confusing, if you need more help

I'd appreciate it if someone could help me understand what I need
to do in ITunes to share the files with Downcast. I'm using Windows.

Can I put MP3 file-sets into the automatically import into
ITunes folder? That's how I typically import books and such. I
don't have ITunes using a music library or anything like that. I
like to control ITunes as much as I can.

If not, should I bring in the MP3s via Music?

Is it home sharing that I want, or some other kind of sharing
that I'm missing? I thought Home-Sharing related to sharing on my network.

Do I need to change something related to Downcast when I see it
in the list of app.s in ITunes?

Sorry to be asking so many questions, but I'm trying to document
the approaches I've been trying in hopes it'll speed an answer and
make whatever simple step I am missing clear.

 Thanks in advance.

 Best,
 Jennifer
