Hi Dan,

I have the same problem with SIRI, it does at this point not seem to do a
very good job listening to these commands like "cap" or "all caps on" and
"all caps off". Let's hope that when iOS 6 comes out SIRI gets a serious
performance boost.

Hello folks,

This email is being dictated through Siri.

I've been experimenting with dictation using Siri. Generally speaking,
everything seems to be working just fine. However, I do have a question.

My question concerns capitalization of words. I am talking about
capitalization after the start of the sentence. For example, somewhere in
the middle of a sentence, a person's name or place. In the number of
instructions that I've read on different websites, the instructions say to
use the word cap before capitalizing any words however the matter what I
tried using cap and in the word with it doesn't work. For example I'm going
to try to capitalize my name. My name is, Danny. It capitalized this word
because it's a common name. Let me try another Word to be capitalized.

In this example, I will try to capitalize the word computer. He we go here's
the word, cap computer. Note, it didn't work.

If anybody has experience with this or has any suggestions, I'm sure opened
to them.

Thank you very much.

RE: Thermostat with accessible iPhone App

2012-07-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
So then who cares, if Nest is not accessible and if the devs are not
interested just go with the Radio Thermostat setup, there are also other
options out there, but I have 3 of them and are very happy with both the
thermostats and the app and how everything works very well together. I also
like the fact that the Radio Thermostat app has been updated quite often
both to improve stability and to add new features like the ability to set up
a schedule right from the app which was added in the last release. I think
Brett who had one installed after I gave him my positive feedback is also
happy with it. The actual thermostat is affordable and the app is free.

Actually the NEST thermostat was developed by a previous Apple
employee/engineer. I can't remember who it was though. But when I first
heard about the NEST I downloaded their App and created an account on their
Web site. I then contacted them about the inaccessibility of their app. The
response I got back was disheartening. They had no interest in my request
and have no intention of pursuing the issue.

If anyone is interested I can dig up their response, but after hearing that
crap from them I am not interested in doing business with them.

One thing that has made the difference for that is to double tap the

it is still there with the exchange mail as well as with IMAP. Don't
see why it wouldn't be, but then I don't see why VO can't just read
the freaking body like it should either. If the work around is easy

RE: I NEED HELP GETTING STARTED WITH TWITTER!!!

2012-07-31 Thread Joney
Twitter doesn't have anything more than a list of messages that you receive
from those you follow. You only get messages from the people you follow,
not those who follow you.
You can make a list or several lists of people, one for friends, one for
business, for example so you only see the ones you want to look at at the
moment or look at all your messages in your timeline.
If you want to look at other things being talked about, you can look at
trending topics and, by putting a number sign in front of whatever word they
are using to mark their tweets, yours will be added to the conversation.
Hope that gives you a starting spot.

You need to tab over to books press space, then go on to select all then
sync or apply whichever shows up I just had to do that when I gave my 4 to

iTreadmille is very good and doesn't require gps to work. It's been
discussed here several times, so maybe an archive search might help.

Guys

Does anyone know if these apps work on a rowing machine? That's the only
real exercise I get apart from walking to work and back and I would love to
use it for that. It wouldn't have to mind being stationary and only using
the accelerometer to gauge performance.

Thanks, Robin.

Re: dictation email with siri

2012-07-31 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, I think it depends on how much of a pause you are talking about. For
example, you can say something like.

hello comma how are you question mark

That will translate to Hello, how are you?

However if you pause too long in between, Siri will stop to have a chat
with you.

If you want to do the dictation in pieces you can start by saying, send
text. Then pause. Then tap listen again when Siri asks you who to send
it to, then you can say the name. Pause and then wait for the next
question. Keep doing this until your text is out. However, it will be
far faster if you say something like,

send text to Amanda hello comma how are you question mark

Then the text will go to your girlfriend or wife Amanda and it will say,
hello, how are you?

I hope that helps.

Re: iTreadmill questions

2012-07-31 Thread Dan
Hi,
It is mostly VO friendly. The only thing is some of the rather strange labeling
of the buttons. However, after you learn how to use it, it works just fine.
It uses the iOS Devices accelerometer. That will monitor the motion of the
iPhone, or iPod Touch.
I use it when I dome some limited walking, to see if i'm improving any.

Right, so that means it is not an IPhone issue at all. That is a good

A note regarding dictation using Siri

2012-07-31 Thread Dan
Hello folks,

This email is being dictated through Siri.

I've been experimenting with dictation using Siri. Generally speaking,
everything seems to be working just fine. However, I do have a question.

My question concerns capitalization of words. I am talking about capitalization
after the start of the sentence. For example, somewhere in the middle of a
sentence, a person's name or place. In the number of instructions that I've
read on different websites, the instructions say to use the word cap before
capitalizing any words however the matter what I tried using cap and in the
word with it doesn't work. For example I'm going to try to capitalize my name.
My name is, Danny. It capitalized this word because it's a common name. Let me
try another Word to be capitalized.

In this example, I will try to capitalize the word computer. He we go here's
the word, cap computer. Note, it didn't work.

If anybody has experience with this or has any suggestions, I'm sure opened to
them.

Thank you very much.

iTreadmill questions

2012-07-31 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Um, my apologies if this is a stupid question. I found some info on
iTreadmill, but I'm still not sure if iTreadmill is a pedometer for real
world walks and runs, or something that can be used to monitor activity
from actual use of a treadmill.

Also, the description of features at iTreadmill.net sound so extensive,
it's hard to believe it is fully or mostly VoiceOver friendly. Is it
really?

Thanks. Keith

You may consider in the future simply sending the full articles

only applies if the websites in question permit their articles to

Hi Godwin,

Now that you mention it, I think you maybe correct regarding
Photostream not counting towards your 5 GB limit and I know apps
certainly don't, either. However, documents and app data does, so I'd
maybe check in "Settings", "General" and "Usage" to see if anything
stands out in terms of how much space the various apps take up. All I
can suggest is that maybe to try and turn off some stuff like
Documents and see if that makes a difference.

Good luck,

,

I recently bought a lot of apps. Photo streaming, book marks and
documents are what I've enabled in my iCloud. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm made to understand that photo streaming does not affect the 5 Gb
free storage. I have 4.2 GB free space.

What should I do?

Godwin,

You may have enabled backing up something which you didn't have
enabled before, for example Podcasts or something like that. Have you
taken pictures or video? If you turn on Photostream it may take up a
lot of storage as well. More and more developers enable iCloud
backups, so just take a look and see if you recently bought any new
apps which may use iCloud or, as I said, you enabled backing up to
iCloud in one of your apps.

Hi,

I don't have an iPhone 4S, but for those of you who do, couldn't you ask
Siri to tell you what's on the New York Times best sellers list, then check
for those items under Read2Go? And this sounds like another good feedback
suggestion for the Read2Go forums. I still would like the ability to upload
non-Bookshare books without having to use iTunes. The suggestion for "Add
Read2Go in the "Open In" options for any links to DAISY books" is currently
in the top three -- behind requests for "Daisy with graphics to see
pictures" and "Allow tap-to-turn-the-page style of navigation, instead of
just scrolling".

Cheers,

Does anyone know if these apps work on a rowing machine? That's the only

Yes Apple has improved the accessibility of Pages, Numbers, and presumedly
Keynote. I have not explored all three of these apps in total yet, but tables
are now accessible in Pages which they were not previously. THis is on the Mac
and I'm trying to remember how accessible tables were for the iOS versions.
Progress may be slow, but is being made.

I strongly suggest that you not give up Windows, especially with the pending

With the release of Mountain Lion, I, once again, assert that Apple Mail is

Re: Thermostat with accessible iPhone App

2012-07-31 Thread Keith Watson
Actually the NEST thermostat was developed by a previous Apple
employee/engineer. I can't remember who it was though. But when I first heard
about the NEST I downloaded their App and created an account on their Web site.
I then contacted them about the inaccessibility of their app. The response I
got back was disheartening. They had no interest in my request and have no
intention of pursuing the issue.

If anyone is interested I can dig up their response, but after hearing that
crap from them I am not interested in doing business with them.

I took a look at the notes on the Developers site and your answer is no.
Apparently, it isn't even useful for treadmill use as it uses the GPS to
measure distance and speed along with elevation. I wish I knew this before I
bought it as I do most of my walking on a treadmill indoors.

Does anyone know if these apps work on a rowing machine? That's the only real
exercise I get apart from walking to work and back and I would love to use it
for that. It wouldn't have to mind being stationary and only using the
accelerometer to gauge performance.

  Thanks, Robin.

RE: iPhone and PC versus iPhone and Mac?

2012-07-31 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Keith,

I, too, am a long time dedicated Windows and Jaws user. I have an iPHone 4
S. I also have a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. I use both Windows 7
and Windows 8 Beta.

I find that I use my iPHone with Windows 7, via Jaws ans Zoomtext, almost
exclusively.

Now I use my Mac everyday but I sync my iPHone and manipulate all files,
including those in the Cloud, on my Windows computer.

I strongly suggest that you not give up Windows, especially with the pending
release of windows 8 both on the PC and tablets, but, rather, add the Mac
with all its marvelously accessible features, to your proverbial toolbox.

With the release of Mountain Lion, I, once again, assert that Apple Mail is
superior to MS Outlook 2007, 2010, etc in terms of screen reader
accessibility.

Are there merits to continuing the iDevice / PC approach, or should I
seriously think about a conversion to iDevice / Mac?

My apologies if this is off-topic, but the question is driven primarily by
the iPhone and optimal way to integrate a computing approach between iPhone
and a laptop / desktop.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Godwin,

Now that you mention it, I think you maybe correct regarding Photostream not
counting towards your 5 GB limit and I know apps certainly don't, either.
However, documents and app data does, so I'd maybe check in "Settings",
"General" and "Usage" to see if anything stands out in terms of how much
space the various apps take up. All I can suggest is that maybe to try and
turn off some stuff like Documents and see if that makes a difference.

Good luck,

Sieghard

,

I recently bought a lot of apps. Photo streaming, book marks and documents
are what I've enabled in my iCloud. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm made to
understand that photo streaming does not affect the 5 Gb free storage. I
have 4.2 GB free space.

What should I do?

Godwin,

You may have enabled backing up something which you didn't have enabled
before, for example Podcasts or something like that. Have you taken pictures
or video? If you turn on Photostream it may take up a lot of storage as
well. More and more developers enable iCloud backups, so just take a look
and see if you recently bought any new apps which may use iCloud or, as I
said, you enabled backing up to iCloud in one of your apps.

I took a look at the notes on the Developers site and your answer is no.
Apparently, it isn't even useful for treadmill use as it uses the GPS to
measure distance and speed along with elevation. I wish I knew this before I
bought it as I do most of my walking on a treadmill indoors.

Guys

Does anyone know if these apps work on a rowing machine? That's the only
real exercise I get apart from walking to work and back and I would love to
use it for that. It wouldn't have to mind being stationary and only using
the accelerometer to gauge performance.

Thanks, Robin.

Hello Jordan,

There is also an app called Runkeeper which was mentioned here a while back
and which, I believe, some of the para Olympic athlets use.

One thing I wonder about is why it si necessary to have 4 different apps,
one for cycling, one for walking and even 2 for running, one normal and one
for 5K? There is no difference between walking and running except that one
is a bit faster than the other and some of the cycle specific stuff like
cadence could certainly be built in and, as in Runkeeper, one just selects
the activity (running, walking, hiking, cycling etc.)

Sieghard

Sorry I got the price wrong they are all less at only £1.99. They are all
also 5 star apps and have been reviewed and featured/reccomended by
appleinsider, cultofmac, wired etc. as well as apple. I am so delighted
such fantastic apps for fitness training are now accessible.

Hello All:

With my hearing deficit I was having trouble properly hearing VO say some
words, especially with V's, D's, B's, etc. (aging ya know, smiles) Anyway,
it actually was a blessing that when the new version of Fleksy came out that
we lost favorites as I went into Fleksy settings to fix favorites and found
a spell option. It is an obvious setting, though I do not remember the
exact wording of it. I turned it on. Now when I type, if I am not certain
of the word it typed I wait for a half second without touching the screen
and it reads back to me the word I just wrote! Something that was not
spelled out as a great function in Fleksy, but it is for me!

Megafauna's Word Search + accessible game

2012-07-31 Thread Phil Vlasak
Megafauna's Word Search +

Word Search plus is a game where you search for words in a grid of letters.

Clickable word lists let you easily learn more about the words you are
searching for.

Learn about dog breeds, food, wine, books, films, art, science, sports,
history, geography, and more!

Word lists were created by a person, not by a computer, to make sure your word
list is always interesting and fun. Our clever word hiding algorithm means the
words are hidden in a new and interesting way each time you play.

Free version comes with 16 categories, including a massive SAT Vocabulary
category with more than 4000 words.

100 categories are available with a paid upgrade.

Five puzzle sizes on iPad, three on iPhone

Tracks your record times

Includes an SAT Vocabulary category with 4000+ words

Stats area. Click "Stats" from the main menu to see a summary of your records
and averages.

No timer option. You can now turn off the timer if you prefer to play untimed.
Go to "Options" then "More" to play to find this setting.

No links option. You can now turn off the links at the bottom of the screen.
This is a great setting for those who accidentally click the links.

completely accessible for the blind. Works with voice over.

Re: Editing Folder names, hows it done?

2012-07-31 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Jay,

Double-tap and hold an app to enter edit mode. Then double-tap the folder whose
name you want to edit. The folder will open, and the name will be editable;
double-click the name and change it as you like. Double-tap Done in the lower
right corner when you're finished, and press Home to exit edit mode.

HTH,
Anna

Re: Editing Folder names, hows it done?

2012-07-31 Thread Scott Davert
When you create a folder, you can double tap on the name and rename it
to whatever you want. If it's an already existing folder, navigate to
the folder on your home screen and double tap and hold. Then, when it
says moving folder, double tap again and a text field will come up
allowing you to edit the folder name. I know that this is the process
by which you delete apps, but when you do this to folders, it allows
you to rename them.

Hope this helps,
Scott

Voiceover volume that way?

Also, Neil, did you get anything from Sonos about when they will finally fix

RE: ICloud Storage

2012-07-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Good luck,

Or double-click the home button while the Sonos App is running to bring up the
app switcher and you can adjust VO/System volume from there.
Three-finger swipe right (twice) and you will be at page 1 where you can adjust
system volume by swiping up/down with one finger when focus is on the volume

To anyone using Sonos, please be aware with their latest iOS update, you can
now change the volume of your Sonos Zone(s) using the physical volume keys of
your iPhone.

In theory this is a welcomed development, however, there is an issue with Voice
Over API's and this new feature of Sonos.

If you are attempting to adjust the volume of Voice Over, by making VO speak
and then pressing the physical volume keys on your iPHone, this will not adjust
Voice Over's volume, rather, it will adjust the Sonos zone volume.

This caught me out the other week when I was sitting in my sitting room
listening to my Sonos Connect, which has a fixed volume output as it is
connected to my home entertainment system, however, Sonos was in group mode and
within that group was also four additional Sonos units all of which had
variable volume options configured.

The net result of this new change to the Sonos iOS controller, was that as I
tried to crank up the volume of Voice Over, i in fact inadvertently cranked up
my four additional Sonos zones to 100% volume.

I have contacted both apple and Sonos about this, as clearly its a significant
problem, and I urge extreme caution. For now the only way to adjust Voice Over
volume is to exit Sonos iOS controllers and make the adjustment.

Cheers.
