Hi,

I think good is a relative term. They sound way better than the old Apple
headphones but, I wouldn't want those to be my main headphones. I find them
uncomfortable for long wear. I have been using the Shure 215 with the mobile
kit. These are IEM. In ear monitors. They come with very comfortable foam
sleeves that conform to the shape of your ear. It blocks out a lot of noise
so, I would not recommend walking with both ears in. Thats just asking to get
hit by a car. I like that you can remove the monitors from the cable. I
rather by a cable than replace the entire pair of headphones if need be. The
Shure215 with mobile kit costs about $140 at amazon. The mobile kit is
basically a cable with a mic and controls on the right wire like the apple
headphones.

Their quality is ok and good for a cheap set of earbuds, but you won't
mistake them for good headphones and they are not a cheap way to get
something that should be more expensive. I also agree that they are not all
that comfortable. They are better in all of the ways listed above than the
previous earbuds. Of course others opinions may differ.

Re: Look Tell organizer, any recent scanning apps

2012-10-07 Thread Russ Kiehne

Perhaps the following from Access World will help:
What's on this Page: A Review of the SayText, Prizmo, and TextDetective iOS
Reading

Apps
Janet Ingber
When the K-NFB Reader Mobile was released in January 2008, it revolutionized
how
people with visual impairments could scan and read printed materials using
their
cell phone camera. The K-NFB Reader Mobile's software, an Optical Character
Recognition
(OCR) program, was developed by Ray Kurzweil and the National Federation of
the Blind.
That software, however, can only be used on a limited number of Nokia cell
phones,
which not all carriers support, and although the K-NFB Reader Mobile is
self-voicing
(which makes the cell phone fully accessible), a separate screen reader
program must
be purchased and installed. The K-NFB Reader, Nokia phone, and separate
screen reader

can be a very expensive combination.
Users of iOS devices (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, etc.) now have several
choices for
OCR apps. Although these apps do not have all the capabilities of the
pioneering
K-NFB Reader Mobile, they are extremely inexpensive, and no additional
screen reader

is necessary.
The apps reviewed here are SayText, Prizmo, and TextDetective. SayText and
TextDetective
are designed specifically for people with visual impairments. For this
review, each
app was tested three times using a printed sheet (a letter), a glossy page
from a
magazine, and a book page, on both an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 4S. (The iPhone
4S has
a more sophisticated camera than the iPhone 4, but the slight improvement in
performance
is not enough to warrant getting the 4S.) Lighting conditions were the same
for all

tests.
Getting Started
These apps need good light as they will not work in very dim lighting
conditions.
Finding the correct distance between the document and the camera lens takes
some
trial and error, and it's not always the distance that the app instructions
recommend.
Depending on the size of the page, it may take several scans to capture the
entire
document. The document needs to be flat, since any wrinkling or folds will
cause
the app to read as gibberish. If scanning results come back as a combination
of words
and gibberish, try a different scanning distance, make sure the document is
completely
flat, and try scanning with more available light (and be careful not to
block the

light with your body).
SayText Version 1.3
As described in the iTunes Store, SayText Version 1.3 is a free product
created for

users who are blind or visually impaired. It requires iOS 5.0 or later.
When the app loads, there are four available buttons: Take Picture,
Tutorial,
Settings, and Info. The tutorial is easy to follow, but unfortunately,
the app
does not work properly. According to the tutorial, the user must place the
iOS device
on the document with the camera facing down, then slowly lift the device up.
When
the document is in focus, a beep should sound. The camera takes the photo
and then
translates the result into text. While the document is processing, the user
can tap
the screen to check on progress. Once the document is converted, you swipe
right

to hear the text.
During all the testing, the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S never made a beep
sound and
never snapped a photo. You need to activate the Take Picture button, which
brings
up a new screen with a Camera button, and activating that button causes
the camera
to take a picture. When the app indicated that OCR was complete, I attempted
to read

the text, but all I got was gibberish.
The app did not read the printed page, the glossy magazine page, or the page
from
a book. I used sighted assistance to try to get a better image but still had
the

same result. My next step was to check the
AppleVis website
to determine if other users have the same problem. There are many comments,
and

everyone that posted a comment seems to have had the same experience.
SayText is a very disappointing product. According to the instructions, it's
easy
to use and gives good results, but we were unable to get the app to read
anything

during testing.
Prizmo Version 1.1.7
This $9.99 app works on all iOS devices running iOS 3.1 or later. The iTunes
Store
description of the app claims that Prizmo will scan and recognize the text
from your
photos of text documents, business cards, bills, and even whiteboards, and
with the
use of Cloud technology, you can share that information with your other
devices as
well as with other people. Another highlighted feature is that this app has
speech-operated

shooting for taking the image that you want read.
This app is somewhat complicated to use. When the app loads, there are
several options
from which to choose, including Settings, Text, and Business Card. In the
Settings
menu, you should turn off the alignment grid and turn on the speech control
option,
which allows the user to take a photo by voice rather than by activating the
button.
This can help with image stabilization. Since

Richard said it well good is a relative term and so is comfortable. You
can get some rather nice headphones for $150 or $200 and most people would

As for comfortable, I never thought the old earbud style headphones were
uncomfortable and unless I wanted to listen to music and get better sound
they were my preferred headphones. Now I bought a set of the new Apple
earpods and they have now become my favourite headset. I can have those in
my ears for hours and feel comfortable, I love the fact they don't block out
external sounds and they do sound better than the old earbuds, not as good
as my $200 VMoto headset, but not bad at all for $35. I personally really
dislike those earbuds with foam that you have to stick half way into your
brain and which seal off your ear like those cheap foam earplugs you twist
so they become thin and then after you stick them into your ears the foam
expands to block off sounds. To me those are the most uncomfortable thing
there is and while some say the Apple earpods fall out of their ear, for me
they stay in perfectly. But that just shows how different opinions can be
and it's the reason why if somebody asks 10 people what a good headset is
they most likely get 10 different answers.

The one that allows you to take a picture of an object and record an

label that will play the next time you point the camera at that object.
However, you want to make sure that you get the object to fill as much of

Be sure and read its description in the app store before buying so you

I probably won't see them until the new iPod Touch comes out.

K-NFB Reader Mobile, they are extremely inexpensive, and no additional screen
 reader
 is necessary.
If scanning results come back as a combination
 of words
and gibberish, try a different scanning distance, make sure the document is
 completely
flat, and try scanning with more available light (and be careful not to block
 the
 light with your body).
The camera takes the photo and
 then
translates the result into text. While the document is processing, the user
 can tap
the screen to check on progress. Once the document is converted, you swipe
 right
 to hear the text.
During all the testing, the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S never made a beep
 sound and
never snapped a photo. You need to activate the Take Picture button, which
 brings
up a new screen with a Camera button, and activating that button causes the
 camera
to take a picture.

Hi,
Is it still doing that after you turned off all notifications but sounds for
this app in the notification center settings?
Strangely a friend of mine who has an IPhone on Verizon reports this behavior
but I’ve never experienced this with my IPhone from ATT. You wouldn’t think
it’d matter but that is the only difference between our two devices.
I wish I could help vanquish that one for you but sadly I can’t figure out

Hi Everyone,

this app has been kind of temperamental concerning interaction with its
settings buttons since updating to I.O.S 6. However there is a work around
which a friend of mine and I discovered while waiting for its maker to respond.

As to what caused the behavior with these buttons to change only when voiceover
is running I’m not technical to know though Apple Accessibility is aware of it
and so is its maker. If any other users would like to write to its maker it’s

supp...@luthersoft.com

As for the work around in the meanwhile if you swipe past the button in
question which you’d like to successfully interact with then swipe left to get
back to it suddenly it’ll operate as it ought.

then you can successfully change things such as chiming style and scheduling
and the like.

Its maker also suggests for optimal results navigating to phone settings and
notification center and changing the settings for this app to sounds only
turning off badges alerts and the like for it.

I hope this helps.

 Hello all,

I'm using an iPhone 4S running iOS 6.0 and while on iOS 5 I was able
to use VO to engage a call and then once the call was connected use
the tripple click home to turn VO off during a call to prevent it from
reading my texts into my ear during a call.

Now however, when I do this once the call has engaged it throws the
call to speaker even with my ear on the phone itself. So I press home
again 3 times and it is still in speaker mode but VO turnes off. I
then have to press the speaker button on my screen, which I can see as
I have a little vision. But, why does this happen and is it happening
 to anyone else?

 Thanks

IOS 6 and the camera app with VoiceOver

2012-10-07 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi all,

We discovered a little gem on our iPhones last night: VoiceOver seems
to be able to announce feedback when positioning the iPhone camera
including how many faces are in view and whether a face is centered
etc.. Somehow I missed this when iOS 6 came out and I actually don't

was so cool that I just had to write to make sure people knew about
it. I'm surprised a bigger deal hasn't been made of this feature. In
my view it's very very useful.

What does the accessibility menu under Accessibility settings do on the Apple TV?

2012-10-07 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I just got the latest Apple TV today, and I was setting it up. After
updating to the latest firmware I noticed a new menu option under the
Accessibility Settings. It says Accessibility Menu, and you can turn it on
and off. I called Apple about it, but the tech wasn't sure what it did, and
he thought it would be part of a future update. I'm just curious what this
option does.

By the way I hooked my Apple TV up to the bedroom using the coax connector
on the TV. I used two devices to do this: the HDMI to composite adaptor
which I mentioned yesterday, and a composite to coax box. It works great
audio wise. I can't speak about the video quality, though.

Thanks for any ideas on my question.

Interesting email question

2012-10-07 Thread Jim Portillo
I'm curious about something.

When I had my IPhone 4, I changed from Earthlink to CenturyLink (q.com). It
automatically set the account up as an IMap account on my phone. I really
couldn't change it. I kind of liked it because it made deleting messages
easier.

When I tried setting it up on the IPhone 5, it went to the pop3 settings,
which is the same as what I have on my computers. Now, I've been told by
CenturyLink that CenturyLink didn't support IMap. So, why would the IPhone
have done this in the first place? Kind of strange.

In fact, the new IPhone asked me for my email password before I had to
delete my account and add it again with the new settings. I'm guessing it's
because of the new settings.

Anyone know what the deal is there?

Subject: Triple Click VO off during a call
 To: viphone viphone@googlegroups.com

 Thanks

 Katey

iOS 6.0 VoiceOver Recent Call Bug Detected

Hello,

In iOS 6.0, there is a VoiceOver bug on the recent Call screen in the Phone
App.

The bug is that VoiceOver mistakenly announces missed call items as being
Unsuccessful call items.

To reproduce the bug, do the following:

1.
Do not answer an incoming call.

2.
Open the Phone App.

3.
Select the Recent tab.

4.
Browse the call list and VoiceOver will announce that the call you did not
answer was Unsuccessful instead of Missed.

Have you noticed?

2012-10-07 Thread reggie.alvar...@gmail.com

Since I updated to six, I have been noticing that voice over has been somewhat
sluggish. If I turn the phone off, and back on, I will clear up all the being
sluggish. Also, Fleksy seems much more responsive. With the previous version, I
was turning off my phone about once a week. Now I have to turn it off almost
every day. What could or might be causing this? Bet it is just my phone.
Smiley. Everyone is going to tell me is is not happening to them, I know.
Smiles. Sending anyway just in case I am not alone?

Subject: What does the accessibility menu under Accessibility settings do on
the Apple TV?

I have noticed that All Football has gotten flaky since I installed IOS6.
The feed often custs out after a few minutes, and there is an error message
given. Also, there seem to be fewer stations streaming the 49ers games, but
I think that this has to do with the teams contract with the NFL. They want
you to buy Audio Pass.

Right now, I am listening to the 49ers game on WGR Buffalo because the app

Anyway will try out the other app as soon as I find out what it is.

But, it does look like the nfl is tightening up on access though which

Re: nfl football app

I think you are thinking of Pro Football as the other app but it has its
problems too. I think the NFL is probably tightening its control over stations.
I wouldn't mind if they would just come out with and audiopass app instead of
having these exclusive contracts with cell phone carriers. First it was with
Sprint and then with Verizon. It will be interesting to see if they rethink
things at all when that contract ends.

RE: An iPhone 5 question

2012-10-07 Thread Daniel Miller
We have defective phones or cables, then, because it's happening to wendy
and I. I don't mean to tell people they're clearly wrong, but I've also
tried it several times, with the phone powering on each time.

I have now tried it with my iPhone 5 several times. Not once has my iPhone 5
turned on when I plugged in the lightning connector except when the
connector is connected to some sort of power. The iPhone 5, like all other
iPhones, will turn on when it receives power through the port. Note: if you
plug it in right after unplugging the USB from a powered source, you can
cause the iPhone to switch on because of the residual charge in the cable
that hasn't dissipated yet. However, this should not be a factor after
several seconds.

Re: IOS 6 and the camera app with VoiceOver

2012-10-07 Thread David Chittenden
Face detection works automatically when VO is running. Please remember that it
is light and contrast sensitive. In other words, if the lighting is too low, or
if the background is too noisy for face detection to properly detect the
presence of faces, nothing will be announced.

was so cool that I just had to write to make sure people knew about

Re: Why do iPhone 5 and Brailliant B80 not get along?

I tried pairing a Brailliant 40 which is about a year old and never got it to
pair. You might want to contact Apple Accessibility, accessibil...@apple.com,
(assuming this is a supported display). Some reason I thought there may be some
change necessary with the Brailliant, but I cannot recall and maybe why I could
not get it paired. I use a Refreshabraille which takes a little work to get
paired, but once done seems to work.

Re: OCR doc already on the iPhone/iPad

2012-10-07 Thread Jodie Hoger
Hi there. I have the same issue. I haven't found an app that will do this
directly however here is a workaround.
Open the file attachment and take a screen shot - home plus power button. This
puts a photo of the image in your camera roll and will be the last one on the
list with the highest number.
Open your preferred ocr app and go to the camera roll option. Select the photo
of the image you took the screen shot of and go through the normal process of
your app to ocr it.
I find that prismo is the most accurate with the least amount of mistakes but
the others do work reasonably well if you don't have prismo. You can then save
your translated file into whatever app you use for storing documents etc.

Ok try this.

1. double tap and hold on the last status you can see.
2. go to the top of your screen and just tap once on it.
3. three-finger swipe down.
4. go back down to that status you just double tapped and held on and
flick right. sometimes, you may have to flick right a coupole times till
the updates come in.

Re: nfl football app

2012-10-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
The app I use and that I think may have been mentioned here before is
called Pro Football Radio and Live Scores, and costs $0.99 in the App
Store. It recently got an update to help address the buffering issue.
I have noticed that not all listed stations carry the games too, but
usually one of the opponent's stations carries it so that's not a big
deal for me. At least someone carries it, :)

I think you are thinking of Pro Football as the other app but it has its

stations. I wouldn't mind if they would just come out with and audiopass app

it was with Sprint and then with Verizon. It will be interesting to see if
they rethink things at all when that contract ends.

There's also one called Clear Record Premium which is paid, but not
sure if it works on the iPad. I like Clear Record because you can
speed up the playback when listening to your recording. Note though
that after starting the recording, VO volume will decrease, but the
Done button is right above the Home button, at least that's how it is
on the iPhone version. There are other cool features to Clear Record,
like I believe the ability to transfer recordings over wifi, but the
playback at faster speeds was the one that sold me initially.

Subject: recording app for teh iPad

Hello all,

I've had my iPad for about a week, and I noticed that there doesn't seem to
be an app for recording interviews and so forth.

I am used to Voice memos on my iPhone 4S, but are there some good
recording

apps out there for the iPad?

Sorry if this question has already been asked.

Thanks!

Re: iOS 6.0 VoiceOver Recent Call Bug Detected

2012-10-07 Thread James Mannion
Probably it is a matter of oopinion. Ok, I understand your question
really implys was it changed on purpose or an unintended result of
something. It seems to me it is such a minor thing and I'm sure the
accessibility team have tons and tons and tons of emails. It may not
be worth everyone flooding them with emails on this little thing too.
I also wonder if anyone has confirmed with someone what visually is
indicated on a missed call verses an unsuccessful outgoing call. I
don't know if it is an icon or a text label. If a mislabeled icon,
probably really easy for them to correct.

 Hello All,

While I'm almost certain this has been discussed here on the list, I just
 noticed a VoiceOver Bug.

If you can reproduce the bug, I strongly encourage you to either send a
comment to accessibil...@apple.com or to call their accessibility number
 which is: 877-204-3930.

Feel free to use any part of the following should you decide to send them

iOS 6.0 VoiceOver Recent Call Bug Detected

A Question About The Latest Version of the Messaging App on Both iOS and Mac

2012-10-07 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am posting this to both lists.

I just updated my Mac, today, to the latest version.

In the release notes, it states that the latest version of the Messaging App
now allows for people to send messages to your phone number and you will see
them on your Mac.

I Interpret this to mean that, assuming you are using iMessage on your iOS
device and, assuming that you are signed into the same iCloud account on
both your Mac and iOS device, you should see incoming messages sent to your
iOS phone number, on the Mac, in the Messages app, as well as on your phone.

Am I wrong?

I just received a text message from a fellow iOS iMessage user on my phone
but it did not show up in the Messages app on my Mac.

Do I need to enable something new in order to get this to work?

All feedback welcomed.

Re: IOS 6 and the camera app with VoiceOver

2012-10-07 Thread Grant Hardy
Yes, I discovered that shortly after posting my previous message to
the list. The odd thing is that the feature never worked on either my
4 or my 4S in iOS 5, but it works now with iOS 6. Maybe there were
some undocumented improvements to the feature in the latest version of
iOS? The odd thing is that I used the camera for more than a year on
iOS 5 and never heard any information like that announced, but I'm
certainly hearing it now. It also doesn't appear to be in any
documentation from Apple.

Best,

Grant

 Hi all,

After further research it appears that this has been here for at least
the last version of iOS as well, although it was never announced on my
phone until this year's update. Curious.

 Hi all,

We discovered a little gem on our iPhones last night: VoiceOver seems
to be able to announce feedback when positioning the iPhone camera
including how many faces are in view and whether a face is centered
etc.. Somehow I missed this when iOS 6 came out and I actually don't
believe it has come up on the list. My profuse apologies if it's been
discussed a hundred times and I just kept missing it! But I thought it
was so cool that I just had to write to make sure people knew about
it. I'm surprised a bigger deal hasn't been made of this feature. In
my view it's very very useful.

RE: more FaceTime questions

2012-10-07 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Vicky, yes, about 3 MB per minute for a Facetime call.

There will be no difference in the quality whether you use 3G or Wifi,
although depending on how congested the network is and how good coverage is,
you may experience latency issues.

Re: recording app for teh iPad

2012-10-07 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Elizabeth,

There are two more paid recorders that are popular among many on this
list, Voxie Recorder and List Recorder.

List Recorder is my favorite as it is not only a excellent recorder but also is
a note taker as well.

Also, List Recorder is designed for the Voice Over user so it is completely
accessible. I think the strongest plus for List Recorder is that it is
designed to make it easy to organize recordings. You can move them around to
different lists and re name the lists in any way that works for you. You can
organize things in all different ways.

Finally, The ability to add to either the beginning or the end of a existing
recording is a great help.

As far as sending the recordings to your computer you can use, email, dropbox,
or itunes File share. Everything is described in the detailed help sections in
the app or you can use podcasts from sixthmode.com or applevis.com.

YOu can also export all or some of your List Recorder info to your computer for
safe keeping. I'm a believer in backups so I appreciate this being built in.

To purchase List Recorder you first purchase the light app
for .99. You then do a in app purchase to get the full version. the second
purchase is $7.99. Once you have List Recorder your device will be a fully
functional accessible recorder and note taker.

I use this app more then any other on my phone. I'm sure it will work well on
the iPad.

Hope this info is helpful.
