Hi Igor.
I'm a strong user of ILike2ReadPro and I'm waiting for my iPhone 5. As soon as it arrives to me I'll let you know if that issue also
affects me. The IL2RP's dev is my friend, so, I'm pretty sure we will find a solution.

Re: iTunes Match - To use it or not to use it, that is the question

2012-10-19 Thread ShamelessFanGirl
Good evening/very early morning all,

Having recently signed up for this service myself, I can tell you firsthand
what motivated me to go for iTunes Match, after doing a goodly bit of
fence-riding for the last year while trying to make up my mind. I have a
library of just under 15000 songs, and found myself wanting that collection at
my fingertips at all times, rather than needing to access it from my computer
only. True enough I have a 64 GB phone, but do a lot of audiobooks, thus, space
is a problem, and iTunes Match provided me a way of having the best of both
worlds. It's doubly convenient, because you have the option to download your
tracks from the cloud, if you know you'll be without net access, so again,
provides the best of both the streaming, and physical media worlds.

To the original poster: I'm in agreement with what everyone else has said here,
in that I don't think you'd get much out of the service for the reasons already
outlined.Unlike yours truly, it sounds as if you manage the space on your phone
wisely. :D

Have fun all, and as always, take care.

Re: voiceover during a call

2012-10-19 Thread James Mannion
If VO is speaking the duration of a call during the call, you need to
touch something else on the screen so it is not focused on the
duration field that keeps changing. This is likely your issue with it
continuing to speak your call duration. Have you tried touching
something else on the screen?

syncing podcast from iPhone to computer

2012-10-19 Thread Tara Prakash
Dear all. The subject line says it all. I have subscribed to a podcast on my
iPhone and now I want to subscribe it on iTunes so that I can download it on my
computer. How should I do it?

With Jaws 13 and windows xp I have never been able to find a subscribe button
to subscribe to podcasts on the computer. So I subscribe using iPhone and
mostly listen to them on the iPhone. But recently my wifi stopped working and I
don't want to use data to download podcasts. If someone could also tell me what
to do after finding the podcasts on ITunes to subscribe , I will appreciate the
favor.

Regards

TaraPrakash

Re: iTunes Match - To use it or not to use it, that is the question

2012-10-19 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, while I like the idea of iTunes Match, it's not for me. However if
others use it, friends, family, etc, I support them. My reasons for not
using it is because I get the same functionality from AudioGalaxy. Yes,
I probably avoid the 256 encoding it offers, but that's not important to
me. With AudioGalaxy I have access to all of my music and I'm not
limited to the 25 thousand songs that you would be with iTunes Match. If
I want to hear music I don't have in my own collection then I can use
Pandora or Songza as alternatives. If I'm traveling and won't have
access to the cloud, then I can easily keep around 5 or 10 gb of music
on my phone, not using iTunes Match, and have access to local songs that
way. So, for me it's just not worth it.

keep these files on a network drive so I can access it with my Sonos system.
I chose to use the lossless system because storage space is cheap and not an

conversion feature of DB Power Amp to convert everything from the lossless
format to M4A at 256 Kbps and I have that in my iTunes Media Folder on my
laptop for syncing to my iPhone. At 256 Kbps my lossless collection shrunk
to about 23 or so Gb which easily fit on my 64 Gig iPhone 4S with lots of
room to spare for apps, audio books and the occasional photos and videos.

My question is whether I'd actually get anything out of using iTunes Match.
If I do turn it on and my iTunes library is matched and what is not is

like a local copy of everything on the phone because I can't stream if, for

Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?

2012-10-19 Thread Scott Howell
I read an article about this and apparently it is not a flaw or defect in the
phone. In fact I wonder if it is part of a switch or something. I can shake my
iPhone 4S and hear something rattling around. THis is my second 4S and they
both did the same thing.

I have seen this issue in my iPhone 4, and it happen with the numbers, or
just using the keyboard. Some times it doesn't say the letter or number, so
I need to delete something, to make sure that I wrote, or if I need to
retype a number or word. But the worse part is every time when I receive a
called, voice over keep saying the duration of the called, and It doesn't
allow me to talk, because I have voice over talking so loud and I can't
understand what the person on the call is saying.

I've heard of people receiving iPhone 5 units, shaking them, and
hearing disconcerting noises as though little pieces are moving around
inside the phone. Well, I wouldn't describe the "rattle" on my new
iPhone 5 as really a big deal, but there's definitely a subtle
clicking noise that I hear when shaking the phone.

Have others experienced this?

Grant

Re: iDevices and license

2012-10-19 Thread Scott Howell
Pablo,

If you give the phone to someone else and they set it up as a new device, they
loose everything. You would not have to repurchase any apps because you already
own those apps. The apps are tied to your iTunes account and not to the device
itself.
If you reset the phone before you give it to that person, then everything will
obviously be lost.

If I understand your question right, if you have already bought the
app for another iPhone, and you buy the iPhone 5, then all your
previously purchased apps should transfer to the new iPhone without
any trouble or need to buy the app/license again. You can test this by
deleting an app from your phone, go to the App Store, and download it
again without needing to pay for it, since you've already paid for it.

Re: voiceover during a call

2012-10-19 Thread Pablo Morales
I have seen this issue in my iPhone 4, and it happen with the numbers, or
just using the keyboard. Some times it doesn't say the letter or number, so
I need to delete something, to make sure that I wrote, or if I need to
retype a number or word. But the worse part is every time when I receive a
called, voice over keep saying the duration of the called, and It doesn't
allow me to talk, because I have voice over talking so loud and I can't
understand what the person on the call is saying.

I am experiencing some strange volume issues on my iPhone 5 with VO as
well. VO is loud enough, but not all numbers are spoken when I find
them on the phone. Sometimes the numbers take a moment or two to be
spoken by VO and other times they are spoken as soon as I touch them.
I am also not hearing the touch tones when I press a number on the
phone, after the call connects and goes through. I recall hearing the
touch tones and the numbers being spoken all the time in iOS 5, but
I've had trouble with this since I've been using the iPhone 5 with iOS
6. I've had the new phone for about 9 days and am still getting used
to everything. I have used iOS 6 on an iPhone 4 and don't recall
having these issues. The issues don't happen all the time, but they do
happen often enough.

  Hi Robert,

I just send a reply to Apple Accessibility about Voiceover volume
during a

call. I reported this to them and they replied with some suggestions, but
they only consisted of the explanation about how to make sure
speakerphone
mode is properly activated which means they thought somehow the phone
hadn't
switched to speakerphone and this is why I couldn't hear Voiceover. I
have
no problem with my phone switching to speakerphone when I take it away
from

my ear. I am not sure if you have your phone in a case, but make sure you
try it without case as sometimes a case can cover the proximity sensor
and

that is what causes your phone to switch to speakerphone. I usually do
this:

I dial the number I want to call and after I double tap on call I put
my
hand over the top part of the phone where the slot is in the glass for
the

earpiece. Once the phone on the other end starts ringing I remove my hand
and now the proximity sensor should of course notice nothing is covering
it

and switch to speakerphone.

However, I still have the volume issue. I have volume in my rotor
settings

and after a call connects I can turn up VO volume to 100% by turning the
rotor to Volume and then flicking up until I get to 100%. Then I turn
down

the call volume to as low as it will go with the volume down button, but
first of all the call volume does not seem to go lower than a certain
level

and Voiceover even at 100% can hardly be heard over the call volume.

You can of course work around this by using a headset, but I definitely
suggest you write to Apple Accessibility and report this because it seems
to

be one of those bugs which most iPhone 5 users and some iPhone 4S and 4
users also don't seem to have.

I did a factory reset about 3 days after I updated to iOS 6 because of
a
few other issues and at first this seemed to be better, but after I tried
to
place calls where I had to enter numbers, listen to menus etc. a few
times I
find it really isn't much better if at all. As far as I am concerned this
is

one of the more inconvenient and serious bugs because one has to enter
numbers or listen to menus so often and of course I also can't put the
phone
in speakerphone and look up other information during a call such as maybe
a

phone number, something in an email or another app.

It would be interesting to know how many people experience this problem
and while it adds to list traffic, the traffic is down significantly from
what it was so maybe everybody who reads this could test this and post
whether they can hear Voiceover comfortably during a call when the phone
is
on speakerphone or not. Before the iOS 6 update this was no problem for
me

on my 4S.

Re: iTunes Match - To use it or not to use it, that is the question

2012-10-19 Thread Marc Rocheleau
Another negative: I know how to tag things properly and for Greatest
Hits compilations (I'll use R.E.M.'s last one as an example) it
matches only the song. By this I mean, in certain cases, it'll
download the original album version of a song that came out in say...
the 80's... and not the remastered greatest hits version. This means
sound quality and volume levels throughout the compilation will then
fluctuate on playback because albums back then were mastered at a
lower volume level.

ILike2read pro and iPhone 5

2012-10-19 Thread Igor Kaplan
Hi,

I wander, if anybody noticed the problem with ILike2Read pro and iPhone 5?
Basically, the application does not work normally. While reading the book,
the screen does not scroll and when after a while I stop reading, I see,
that I am still at the same place where I started to read.

So for now I pretty much moved to iBooks hoping for iLike2Read update,
since I still like this application and ability to use the dropbox for books
import.

I sent the message to developers, however did not receive any reply.

Not sure, if this problem is common to all iPhone 5 users and caused of
the larger screen of that iPhone, or I am only one, who experiencing it?

All the best and have a nice weekend.

   Igor.

Not able to connect to my Dr. Dray beatbox via Bluetooth

2012-10-19 Thread Shane Clark
Hello all,
For what ever reason, I am not able to connect via Bluetooth to my Dr. Dray
beatbox. I have a Bluetooth turned on on my iPhone 4 S, and Bluetooth is turned
on on the docking station. Any suggestions as to what maybe going on? A few
weeks ago, I was trying to Change songs via the remote control that came with
the docking station, via Bluetooth. I figured out why I was not able to do
that, but before I did, I reset my iPhone by holding down the home and power
button for 10 seconds. Now, it won't connect Bluetooth. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Shane.

Re: iDevices and license

2012-10-19 Thread Wayne Merritt
If I understand your question right, if you have already bought the
app for another iPhone, and you buy the iPhone 5, then all your
previously purchased apps should transfer to the new iPhone without
any trouble or need to buy the app/license again. You can test this by
deleting an app from your phone, go to the App Store, and download it
again without needing to pay for it, since you've already paid for it.

Re: iTunes Match - To use it or not to use it, that is the question

2012-10-19 Thread Scott Howell
I would concur with that as well. I do not sync all my music to my phone and
for sure that is do to a lack of sufficient space. :) The only other advantage
is if you had material that was 128Kb and if there was a match available from
iTunes Match you could swap the 128Kb for 256. So, if you ripped your own stuff
you would not benefit either.

Re: iTunes Match - To use it or not to use it, that is the question

2012-10-19 Thread Damashe Thomas
If I were in your position, I don't think I would have subscribed to iTunes
match. I chose to use it because I can't put all my music on my iPhone and
still have room for the many apps and podcasts that are stored there. It is
just an opinion, but the only advantage I think you would gain at this point
would be having an extra backup of sorts of all your music. There may be
some other reasons for you to subscribe, but I can't think of any at the

Subject: iTunes Match - To use it or not to use it, that is the question

Hello List,

I am normally among the first to adopt new technology and features, but I
am
still on the fence with respect to iTunes Match. I have approx. 280 CD's
and

a bit of other music which I mostly purchased from iTunes, a total of just
under 3,800 songs. I ripped all my CD's using the FLAC lossless format and
I
keep these files on a network drive so I can access it with my Sonos
system.
I chose to use the lossless system because storage space is cheap and not
an

issue, my entire collection takes up about 100 Gig. I then used the batch
conversion feature of DB Power Amp to convert everything from the lossless
format to M4A at 256 Kbps and I have that in my iTunes Media Folder on my
laptop for syncing to my iPhone. At 256 Kbps my lossless collection shrunk
to about 23 or so Gb which easily fit on my 64 Gig iPhone 4S with lots of
room to spare for apps, audio books and the occasional photos and videos.

My question is whether I'd actually get anything out of using iTunes
Match.

If I do turn it on and my iTunes library is matched and what is not is
uploaded, will I then manually have to download it to the phone again? I
do
like a local copy of everything on the phone because I can't stream if,
for

example, I am on a plane or on holidays in a country where maybe I don't
have data and in any case, I use very little data hence have only a very
small data plan. I assume I can download all my music again to my phone
and
maybe the one advantage I can see is that if I ever had to reset my phone
or

got a new phone my music would be downloaded from the cloud and I wouldn't
have to connect to my laptop. Of course it takes a lot longer as well to
download 25 Gig from the cloud than to sync it via iTunes.

Maybe some of you iCloud experts can tell me if there are other reasons
why

I might want to use it or maybe you can just confirm that in my case there
really is no benefit to using it since my phone is plenty big enough to
hold

my music collection and I sync the entire collection anyways.

2012-10-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

I recently did a factory restore after upgrading to iOS 6 and I set up my
phone as a new phone and started from scratch. I didn't time it exactly, but
I think it took about 45 minutes to an hour. This of course is with the
phone connected by cable, not syncing via WiFi.

23 GB of music from your laptop to your phone?

Re: Big Ben

2012-10-19 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Richard,

Does it work with the device locked? I'm testing it now, and I turned the
option on to have it chime quarters.

Thanks,
Teresa

The developer just pointed out to me that with the new do not disturb feature,
apparently we can set the hours for turning off things like this. I haven't
gone and played with that feature yet.

RE: iTunes Match - To use it or not to use it, that is the question

2012-10-19 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi Sieghard,

I can't answer any of your questions, but how long did it take you to synck 23
GB of music from your laptop to your phone?

Thanks. Keith

Subject: iTunes Match - To use it or not to use it, that is the question

Hello List,

I am normally among the first to adopt new technology and features, but I am
still on the fence with respect to iTunes Match. I have approx. 280 CD's and
a bit of other music which I mostly purchased from iTunes, a total of just
under 3,800 songs. I ripped all my CD's using the FLAC lossless format and I
keep these files on a network drive so I can access it with my Sonos system.
I chose to use the lossless system because storage space is cheap and not an
issue, my entire collection takes up about 100 Gig.

My question is whether I'd actually get anything out of using iTunes Match.
If I do turn it on and my iTunes library is matched and what is not is
uploaded, will I then manually have to download it to the phone again? I do
like a local copy of everything on the phone because I can't stream if, for
example, I am on a plane or on holidays in a country where maybe I don't
have data and in any case, I use very little data hence have only a very
small data plan. I assume I can download all my music again to my phone and
maybe the one advantage I can see is that if I ever had to reset my phone or
got a new phone my music would be downloaded from the cloud and I wouldn't
have to connect to my laptop. Of course it takes a lot longer as well to
download 25 Gig from the cloud than to sync it via iTunes.

Maybe some of you iCloud experts can tell me if there are other reasons why
I might want to use it or maybe you can just confirm that in my case there
really is no benefit to using it since my phone is plenty big enough to hold
my music collection and I sync the entire collection anyways.

Regards,
Sieghard

Big Ben

2012-10-19 Thread Richard Turner
I have to put in another plug for Big Ben. I am rather picky about sound
quality, and this is the best for real Westminster chimes from Big Ben itself.

Here is a description from their web site:
 « Big Ben
Anglophiles of the world, rejoice. Now you can get the time of day in style with
a fully functional miniaturised Big Ben on your iPhone or iPad. Britannia
rules.
A throwback to a more innocent time.
Back in the 1980s, an idealistic young developer with too much time on his hands
created a revolutionary program for the fledgling Apple Macintosh platform. It
simulated
a famous Westminster clock tower in 256 glorious shades of grey. Those being
simpler
days, the Mac community gasped in awe at this ticking, tocking, bonging marvel
and
it was greeted with a level of enthusiasm not seen since the invention of
penicillin.
The developer's name was Riccardo Ettore and the software was snappily titled
Big Ben
. Today, we're pleased to offer you a revamped, rather more colourful
incarnation
- updated for the 21st century and ported to a magical
device that's considerably easier to carry around than a Macintosh SE 30.
Big Ben
for iOS puts one of London's most cherished timekeeping landmarks right in your
pocket, replete with authentic Westminster chimes that ring out on the hour, on
the
half hour and on the quarter hour.
That's not all: if you enjoy tweaking things to your liking, you'll be pleased
to
learn we included some additional options. You can switch on a digital display
and

THanks. That is correct I held the shift key a tad to long. I think my fingers

I do try to be sure I catch these types of errors as much as possible. :)

Hi, Scott did spell Apple correctly. It was just with a capital A and a
capital P, as in, he probably held down the shift key too long.
Honestly, let's not nitpick small typos. Otherwise, someone might call
you out for spelling can[t instead of can't in your below message. .

Steve,

Thanks for the suggestion; however, I understand All Menus is not as easy to
use and I'm not looking to install yet another app if the same functionality
exists in Whereto. And Whereto apparently contains twice the number of menu
options as does All Menus.

Re: Around Me

2012-10-19 Thread Scott Howell
Steve,

Thanks for the suggestion; however, I understand All Menus is not as easy to
use and I'm not looking to install yet another app if the same functionality
exists in Whereto. And Whereto apparently contains twice the number of menu
options as does All Menus.

called around me. This app is great for simply exploring your

far I would probably give it a 4.5 out of 5 in the accessibility

It will be the first selection when doing a search in the app store.

Whereto and restaurant menus

2012-10-19 Thread Scott Howell
All,

I read in the description for this app that one could review the menu of a
restaurant, but looking at the options I did not see how this could be done.
Now it is quite possible I am looking at a restaurant that does not have an
available menu, but to be sure, how would I access the menu assuming it is
available.

Thanks

more evidence of vat exemption being allowed

2012-10-19 Thread Alex Wallis

Hi list,

just thought any Irish people on list might find an e mail I have been
forwarded interesting,

It sounds like they are allowing people to obtain products including
VoiceOver vat free in Ireland now, and this message indicates it covers
people who are blind, deaf, and deaf blind.
So it seems like the evidence is mounting that this is allowed if 3
stores in the UK have said this is OK, and now one in Ireland making 4
known ones.

I have pasted the forwarded e mail below.

As it turned out I got myself a better deal on the iPhone 5 through ebay
than if I had gone to my local store, as I got it reduced by more than I
would have got it just without the vat, still worth knowing anyway for
next year.

forwarded message begins below this line

I had the opportunity of visiting the Apple store in Belfast yesterday.
While there, I discovered that people who are registered as blind, deaf
or
deaf-blind are entitled to receive VAT exemption on VoiceOver products.
That is to say, the Mac range, iPad, iPhone, and iPod range. This does
not
include any accessories. All you need to do is take some kind of proof
if
your impairment is not obvious, and complete and sign the VAT exemption
form
a store staff member will give you. You can then purchase your
VoiceOver
product there and then.

This information was offered to me without my even thinking about asking
as
I had absolutely no idea Apple products come under VAT exemption.

I thought you might like to know.

Kind Regards,
end of forwarded message
I really think that Neel has been given inaccurate information by hmrc
and others, as surely if vat exemption wasn't allowed, HMRC would notice
if a lot of stores were giving products vat free, one store they might
not notice, but 4 or more stores, come on I am sure that would be
noticed and stopped if not legal,

Re: iTunes Match how-to's.

2012-10-19 Thread Scott Howell
Of course if you have anything that you ripped into the Apple lossless format
will be streamed/downloaded at 256. Of course have multiple backups of your
local files. Otherwise, I am coming up on my first year with the service and I
have no complaints. If I did you can bet I would have killed the service off
and saved my $25. :)
