Re: gift card says redeemable in apple store and how to redeem in app store

2012-11-22 Thread Rob Harris
When we buy themoff the local store, the only important bit is the long
redeem nubmer; that's all you needed, that is all you put in the redeem
dialogue; and maybe confirm your own id with your own password so it
credits your account.

If email got too involved in the buy and send process, there's no telling
what it's done to ahve those. The sender only needed to send the number,
the email shouldn't ahve a clue it was anything other than a phone or any
long number.

A puzzler!

Sorry I led you into this, seemed so simple on the face of it.

Subject: gift card says redeemable in apple store and how to redeem in app
store

The apple gift card I was supposed to receive has arrived. It has a pin and
a password, but the email says it cannot be redeemed in iTunes. I only want
to use it in the app store. If it can be redeemed in the app store, do I
take out my apple ID and password and put in the ones in the email? Oh I
hope not. First time I have gotten a gift card. Can someone explain how I
redeem, please. Thank you for any help that is given, and have a great
Thanksgiving in the U.S.

Speeddots for Mini?

2012-11-22 Thread Rob Harris
Do we know if the SpeedDots overlay for the Mini is out yet? Not got it
yet, but the case is here, so awaiting the big bit soon. I think the scale
of it would make life quite easy on that device.

There's one registered supplier over in the UK for those products, so price
is an issue.

Also interested in the threads about BT KB cases, though might as well have
a Netbook if you go that far. And powerpacks for recharging when out and
about.

sure what Os, never managed to find one after reading about it either.
Might have been minimal Linux. But it did the Biz!

adding audio books

2012-11-22 Thread Lois Butterfield
I notice that sometimes when I add an MP3 audio book to my phone through

play lists in the recently added. I unzip them the same way and label them the
same. Does anyone have an idea why that might happen?

Thanks,

Paprika Recipe Manager app on sale for Thanksgiving

2012-11-22 Thread Esther
Hello All,

Paprika Recipe Manager was recently discussed on list as an accessible
recipe app with cloud storage, meal planning, and shopping
capabilities. All versions of the app are on sale for more than 50%
off for Thanksgiving. I believe this is the first time they've
discounted this app. There are separate versions for the iPhone and
iPad. There is also a version for the Mac (that requires at least OS
X 10.7 Lion to run), that is also discounted 50% for Thanksgiving, and
that can sync with the iOS versions.

• Paprika Recipe Manager for iPhone ($1.99, regularly $4.99) by
Hindsight Labs, LLC:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/paprika-recipe-manager-for/id406732590?mt=8
• Paprika Recipe Manager for iPad ($1.99, regularly $4.99) by
Hindsight Labs, LLC:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/paprika-recipe-manager-get/id392408028?mt=8

• Mac version of Paprika Recipe Manager ($9.99, regularly $19.99) by
Hindsight Labs, LLC:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/paprika-recipe-manager/id451907568?mt=12

This application has an extensive and detailed User Guide for the Mac,
iPhone, iPad, and Android versions. Please check the main web page:
• Mac User Guide:
http://www.paprikaapp.com/help/mac/
• iPad User Guide:
http://www.paprikaapp.com/help/ipad/
• iPhone User Guide:
http://www.paprikaapp.com/help/iphone/

Also, it is possible to import plain text recipes. Check the User
Guide description of importing options in the YAML format. There are
standard keywords for fields you include, which are followed by a
colon and a space, such as name, servings, prep_time,
cook_time, categories, etc.
Blocks of texts, such as for ingredients, notes, or directions
are indicated by a vertical line following the space.

So, for example, a minimal recipe, with just a name, ingredients, and
directions could look like:

name: My Recipe
ingredients: |
1/4 cup flour
1 egg
1 cup milk
directions: |
Mix everything together.
Eat.
Yum

If you want to put several recipes into a single file to be imported,
add a hyphen and a space in front of each name and separate them with
blank lines. Name the file with a .yml extension. I think that
Keith Watson may have done this, since I originally suggested Paprika
Recipe Manager in response to his request for an app he could use to
manage his own text recipes.

Many thanks to Scott Howell for working with the developer on
VoiceOver accessibility, and to the developer for stepping up to make
what was already an accessible app even better with VoiceOver.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Stacey cannot find type2phone

2012-11-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Well, I don't know what to tell you; type2phone is in the Mac app store and you
are spelling it correctly. My only thought would be that you are in a country
other than the U.S. and for some reason it isn't available to you but since
your email is bellsouth I doubt that. The other thing would be that you still
have your radio button in the Mac app store on updates so that the app isn't
showing up when you type the name in the search field and press return. If
neither of these is the case, I don't know what other suggestion to give; I
just tried it again and the search for type2phone brings up both type2phone and
iKeyboard. Also, I've changed the subject line; it's a bit confusing to have a
question about type2phone under an iKeyboard subject line. I hope you find it;
if I think of any other reason why you might not be able to find it, I'll post
again.

Re: bluetooth headphones/earbuds

2012-11-22 Thread Eric
Shelley, I much prefer the Plantronics over the jaybird for sound. It is much
richer and the jaybird has more of a crisp sound to it. I believe this was
intentional to break through what they supposed would be use in gyms and
 during exercise activity.

As far as microphones, I think it may be a tossup, or the slight edge going to
Jaybyrd. Neither are great, as tested using Siri or dictation. That is the huge
challenge for any Bluetooth device, and none of them have met it so far.

I recently purchased the new jaybird. They were smaller and lighter, but the
sound was no better, and I actually returned them for a refund.

So, yes, the Plantronics are still the best I have used, unless you want to
consider corded ear buds. Then, the Bose MEI top everything. They are superior
for sound, fit and comfort. You do have to deal with a cord, however.

Great to hear from you! Hope you all are doing well.

No, as far as I can see speeddots has nothing out for any of the new devices

Hi folks,
I have been checking through the latest emails and quite a few people
want to download all kinds of things to their iPhones. How about
checking out Phone Drive which lets you transfer things including
music if you like to your device. I have made a podcast on this, again
for another magazine but it may help someone. It also gives you the
facility to download and unzip from the Internet.
Search for Phone Drive on the App Store and it will show up.
Here's the link to my podcast if you are interested.

One observation if the built in app instructions you get don't do the
trick or you are not happy try the app that follows. It is totally
accessible and extremely intuitive to use and will give you all types
of alarms for reminders wake up and timers with a nice number of

Re: Are there any accessible TV guide apps that work in Canada

2012-11-22 Thread Barry Abbott
I use Dijit with a J by Griffin technologies however, despite several messages
about improving the accessibility for their universal remote which is so close
to being totally accessible they have shown absolutely no interest in fixing
the problem.

Nevertheless, I can find out about what shows
are on which channels as well as the details.

I am with Bell Aliant here in Nova Scotia. It also works with other Canadian
Cable and satellite providers.

I have used it on my iPhone 4, and now 5, as well as on my wife's third gen
iPod. The app is free and you will have to play with it a bit to understand how
it works.

But it is very usable.

Search button disappears when using Pages on iPhone with a Braille Display

2012-11-22 Thread Barry Abbott
Hello All. I recently created a file of songs that we sing in our choir using
Pages on the mac. Each song is numbered sequentially and preceded by a page
break. I only have to search for the number. When using Pages on the iPone
with the original keyboard I press the Tools button, then the Find and put in
the search term. I then tap the search button at the right bottom corner and no
problem.

However, when connected with my Focus 40 BT the original keyboard is gone
including the search button. So I cannot get to the place I want quickly. When
in the document canvas you can use chord-4-5-6 to move through the song pages
But it doesn't guarantee you will land at the beginning of a song and it takes
too long..
The Done button does not work, nor does pressing chord-8 for enter. I cannot
find a search button anywhere when using the Braille display and I would like
to be able to use it during our practices.

I'also tried making each song a single text file and numbering each using
elements but this doesn't seem to do the job either.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps AccessNotes will do the job whenever it becomes available.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Barry

Hi,

Just make sure you have a backup of everything on the touch (iTunes
will do this) and you should be set. Going from 4 to 6 is quite a big
jump; you may notice the touch has slowed down slightly although you
will have a large number of new features.

Cheers,
Ben.

Re: Verbatim Keyboard

2012-11-22 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi there CD. The Verbatim, (note the spelling), keyboard has been
discussed a lot on list and there are several messages which people have
sent which describe it. Below is a message taken from the list archives
which should help. Note that I went to the archives and typed verbatim
keyboard as the search and was able to find all the discussions about
this keyboard.

Hope this helps.

What I believe to be correct regarding trivia tunes and multiple players is
that if you go through the app to play with multiple players they have to be
with you. If you go through the game center then you have to have friends

Moderator's note about the list for the next few days

2012-11-22 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello all. I'd like to wish those of you who celebrate the U.S. Holiday
ThanksGiving, a good one. May you be safe, gain weight, and be bloated
as you watch the game, parade, or just sit back and chill. If you don't
celebrate this day whether because you are in a different country, or
because you just don't for your own personal reasons, then please have a
good normal day anyway.

Now as to the reason for my message. I would ask that you be patient
with me and Cara for the next few days in case we are slower to respond
to moderator requests or list business.

Also, please try to do your part to avoid sending useless one liner
messages, public thank you messages, or the me too messages which don't
really add to the list discussions. If something comes up on list which
needs my attention and you want to make sure I really get it, write me
off list and let me know. I'll get a message to my inbox a lot faster
than filtered messages to the viphone folder I have set up. You can also
text me at 260-307-2766 in case it's a real emergency.

Many thanks, and take care.

Re: adding audio books

2012-11-22 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Lois,

I wonder whether it has something to do with the tags which should mark the
book as audiobook rather than music or any other genre. You need to check under
get info in iTunes where the book appears before you sink it to the iPhone
whether under info' and options tabs the book is marked as audiobook.

Hope this helps a little.

When we buy themoff the local store, the only important bit is the long
redeem nubmer; that's all you needed, that is all you put in the redeem
dialogue; and maybe confirm your own id with your own password so it
credits your account.

If email got too involved in the buy and send process, there's no telling

When in the document canvas you can use chord-4-5-6 to move through the song

The Done button does not work, nor does pressing chord-8 for enter. I cannot

I'also tried making each song a single text file and numbering each using

Perhaps AccessNotes will do the job whenever it becomes available.

Re: gift card says redeemable in apple store and how to redeem in app store

2012-11-22 Thread Rob Harris
I bought the last gift card at the local supermarket store. All you need is
the long code number.

I did detail where to put it a couple days back - appstore/featured/ right
to the end, tap redeem button, do what it says; the main bit being give it
the long number.

Hello all:
So, if we fix the card or if it is correct, how do I put the number in the
phone and work with it to buy apps? Detail, please. Also, my friend says he
went to the Apple store to buy. Should he actually go to the App store? He
is buying off the computer running Windows, and this is the first time he
has had anything to do with Apple so we are both in the dark about this.
Thank you all for any help.

A puzzler!

Tonido

2012-11-22 Thread Chris

Hello all
I now got Tonido, both the desktop and iPhone app. Apart from a
misunderstanding on my part not realizing I had to both update the
service and application until they both show fully up to date, it's all
working and it's awesome!
One question though, how do I download files from my computer to my
iPhone? I downloaded an audio file but can't see it anywhere on my
iPhone including the music app.

Thanks!

Re: bluetooth headphones/earbuds

2012-11-22 Thread Casey

hi witch plantronics headset do you have.
And can you still get ahold of it.
And can you also send along a demo of it and what it all has to offer.

On 11/22/2012 8:34 AM, Eric wrote:

Shelley, I much prefer the Plantronics over the jaybird for sound. It is much

Re: Tonido

2012-11-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Yes, you can download and I was going to do it again so I could be sure to give
you accurate directions. i had a lot of trouble figuring it out. But i can't do
that because there must be something I haven't updated. When I open the account
on my iPhone it only shows this device meaning my iPhone but when I try to
add my Mac account again it says I'm already logged in so I've not updated
something. This is in my opinion a much more complicated process than it should
be. So I can't verify my instructions until I figure out what's wrong.

But basically, once you hit the download button make sure it says the download
is queued. Then change to the save or saved tab and double tap the downloads
(it will probably say your username with an apostrophe s and the Downloads).
Your files are in there. I went around and around figuring this out and finally
did a google search to figure it out.

Re: Apple store gift cards

Okay, maybe i'm wrong but it seems pretty obvious to me that you can't use this
at the app store on your Mac or in iTunes. It has to be used at the Apple

you can use it on the hone to the Apple store. This seems to me to be the
relevant line:

For use in the U.S. at Apple Retail Stores, the Apple Online Store, or by

Thanks. That is what I thought. My friend will be contacting Apple for a
refund as it is the apps I want. Hoping by begging a bit (smiles) we can
just change it to the right card! It was a birthday/Christmas present, but
he sure didn't know anything about Apple products, and I'm still learning.
Think I am going to start looking ffor cards in stores.

Re: Ipad or mini laptop?

Yes, the Macbook Air has voiceover if that was the question being asked, and
all Apple computers since 10.4 (Tiger) have voiceover. I could also deliniate
exactly when iPhones and iPods got voiceover but I don't think it bears on what
was being asked and I might not have the iPods right. All iPads have voiceover.

 Hi.
It really depends on the tasks that you want to accomplish. If you're just
taking notes, checking email, web browsing, etc, I'd just go with an iPad
paired with a bluetooth keyboard for speed typing.

If however, you're doing more advanced word processing, spreadsheets, etc,
I'd go with a smaller laptop. These tasks can be more time wasting than
productive on an iPad in my opinion.

I'm in college now, and for some classes I'll just take my iPad for note
taking and email. However, when I'm going to my accounting class for
example, I'll take my MacBook Air so I can use Excel in virtual Windows.

Hope this helps you make you're decision.

Sorry, I know a lot has been posted about this but I'm now totally posted. When

think the device I am on so obviously I haven't updated something. If somebody

You should see where it says This Device. You should be able to either add an
account by using the add button in the top left hand corner, or you should
already see your account listed under where it says This device. Don’t double
tap on This Device, look underneath it to see if you account is listed there.
If not double tap on the add button and enter in your information for your
account.

Re: Apple store gift cards

2012-11-22 Thread David McLean
That simply means you have to redeem it by purchasing something through the
online Apple Store. You enter the number and pin at checkout. An iTunes gift
card is entirely different and is bought through the iTunes Store.

gift card, visit store.apple.com/us/giftcard/balance or call 1-888-320-3301.
 Apple is not responsible for any lost or stolen gift cards. Keep them close;
they’re like cash. Not for resale. Terms and conditions

The redeem should finance both, it is all Apple. I've bought an app, a

Does he actually need to buy an iTunes card? Sorry for all the questions. I
had no idea, and he was looking at the computer. I do not want an Apple
store card but a card to be able to buy apps. Hoping if he calls Apple they
can set him in the right direction, but he was directed to the Apple store

I bought the last gift card at the local supermarket store. All you need is
the long code number.

I did detail where to put it a couple days back - appstore/featured/ right
to the end, tap redeem button, do what it says; the main bit being give it
the long number.

 Hi folks,
I have been checking through the latest emails and quite a few people
want to download all kinds of things to their iPhones. How about
checking out Phone Drive which lets you transfer things including
music if you like to your device. I have made a podcast on this, again
for another magazine but it may help someone. It also gives you the
facility to download and unzip from the Internet.
Search for Phone Drive on the App Store and it will show up.
Here's the link to my podcast if you are interested.

Re: Tonido

2012-11-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Yes, that is what was changed. They used to be downloaded to a downloads folder
and you had to change tabs to find the files you had downloaded. This is less
complicated once you get used to the change but remember that if you've just
downloaded something you need to get back to this device to find your files.

 Hello all
I now got Tonido, both the desktop and iPhone app.
 Thanks!

Re: gift card says redeemable in apple store and how to redeem in app store

2012-11-22 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi Rob and List,

I believe what you are referring to is an App Store card. These can be
purchased at many discount stores, etc. If you have an Apple Online Store gift
card, this is not the same kind of card. The Apple Online store features
computers, phones, IPads, accessories and whatnot. It is the online counterpart
to the physical Apple Stores. The App store is the site you go to for apps and
music and books. In other words, there's a confusing distinction between *App

RE: how do i get my braille display to show the macron characters

2012-11-22 Thread Marco Migotti
I'm using the wheelocks latin 7th edition from the ibooks online book store
and for the most part I am doing ok but it would be nice to have these
annoying macron characters marked on my display in some usable manner. I
wonder if there is a way of converting an ibooks formatted book to something
else. I can read it using voiceover, but it would be easier to do it with
the braille. At least I am able to use the voicenote apex to help with
pronunciation.

Hi,

How strange. I am also working with a Latin book on my iPHone, and I see
dots 4-5-6 before the vowel with a macron. So an o with a macron shows dots
4-5-6 o. The files I'm using were originally PDF, which I converted to epub
using Stanza and then read in iBooks. This is also how I see vowels with
macrons if I create them on the iPhone keyboard. So maybe there would be a
way to convert the text you are reading into a different form that would
show the macrons. I hope so.

question mark with a dot 8 below it where the macron character is on the
screen. Is there a way to create special characters for the macron
equivalence just for when I am reading the latin textbook?
Up till now, I have been using my finger on the phone's screen to read it.
I
thought it would be nice to have my focus 40 do the same thing. I'll
manage
ok if there isn't a solution, but I know that there are times when I'd
need
to read documents with strange characters. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Apple store gift cards

2012-11-22 Thread Rob Harris
Oh! amazing, so thanks for this and sorry for the confusion I must be
causing; didn't know they did it that way; seems an almost pointless way,
and like I said, to think you can buy themoff the local store now. I mean
the supermarket down the road type store!
Now if the sender had done that and sent you the gift card number,
instead of doing all that online thing!
Still, like the man below suggests, you can login to the apple online store
then and buy the right thing there, if you can get around the site
successfully and it is clear what it is it's selling you. I don't do well
with Apple sites, which is why I posed a possible warning.

After thinking about it a little more, and noting the Apple number came up a
few times, call them, they should be able to fix this. They're digging
themselves into a hole by making this unnecessarily complicated.

That simply means you have to redeem it by purchasing something through the
online Apple Store. You enter the number and pin at checkout. An iTunes
gift card is entirely different and is bought through the iTunes Store.

Re: Apple store gift cards

2012-11-22 Thread Rob Harris
Ok, I'm going to guess that Gift number is the one we want; and though not
done this, the pin would be confirmation you got the real card; but for
sure Gift number sounds the most useful and promisng. The Redeem2 button
as previously described is still going to be the path to use it.

Ok, just hcecked in there and iti s actually termed - gift card or download
code:
So apart from the dimmed Redeem button, that is the one you will press when
you have put the number in, all I had was the text field for that code, no
input field for a pin.

So got to be worth a try.

Hi Rob and List,

I believe what you are referring to is an App Store card. These can be
purchased at many discount stores, etc. If you have an Apple Online Store
gift card, this is not the same kind of card. The Apple Online store
features computers, phones, IPads, accessories and whatnot. It is the online
counterpart to the physical Apple Stores. The App store is the site you go
to for apps and music and books. In other words, there's a confusing
distinction between *App Store* and *Apple Online Store*.
