Apple Care vs. Square Trade and other insurance options, was: AppleCare?

2013-02-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi David,

One aspect of Apple Care that was mentioned is the ability to call Apple
technical support beyond your first year without having to pay extra.
However, strictly from a warranty point of view there are other options.
Square Trade, for example, does also offer an extended iPhone insurance plan
which is I believe a bit less expensive than Apple Care and it covers more.
One thing to keep in mind is that Apple Care does not cover your phone if
you jailbreak whereas Square Trade does. I also don't think that Apple Care
covers your phone if it is stolen or if you actually break it by dropping it
into water or on the ground where you end up with a shattered screen.

I actually have Apple Care, but I also added my iPhone to my home owners
insurance. It is listed as a separate item with serial number and all and my
normally much higher deductible does not apply, it has a $100 deductable.
The actual cost for having it insured that way is about $30 a year and the
insurance would cover anything that could happen to it from it being stolen
to me breaking it because of some accident or carelessness. I paid $850 for
an unlocked 4S without contract, so to me it's worth the extra $30 a year
and whenever I get a new iPhone all I have to do is let them know and
provide the new serial number. I think it's definitely worth asking your
insurance company about this if you have home insurance.

Regards,
Sieghard

The PDF viewer in dropbox is jus ok. The cool thing is that once you open
the pdf, there is an open with option. One of the choices is to open in
IBooks. That is way cool!

Yes iBooks is good for PDF, I see that Dropbox just added a PDF reader in
their latest iOS release, but I've not tried that yet.

Hi,

Being able to call tech support is worth it. Also, being able to have a product
replaced when its battery starts to go is great. And I've had several pairs of
earbuds replaced. Last time, my earbuds were replaced by the new earpods, which
was quite a step up, so yes, I agree it's worth the money.

Re Justin TV, has anyone tried to broadcast with it?

2013-02-18 Thread Kathy Brandt

I can't figure out how to start recording. It isn't under anything I've looked
at. I can find channels and all. Ustream was better re being able to
broadcast, apart from how you have to turn voiceover off in order not to hear a
constant blip.

Thanks.

RE: help syncing a hotmail with iphone and outlook 2007?

2013-02-18 Thread Kevin W.
If the Simpatico is a Hotmail powered email, you can use the Microsoft
Outlook connecter plugin. This allows you to add Hotmail / Windows Live /
Other custom Hotmail powered domain emails to your Microsoft outlook
experience. The program automatically syncs emails, contacts, and any
calendars into outlook for convenience syncing across all your devices.

Hope this Helps:

Subject: CP: help syncing a hotmail with iphone and outlook 2007?

Hi all, I normally just switch people over to gmail for syncing calendars
and contacts because it just works, but it's not nice to do to some poor
client who is had his sympatico address for 10 years or something. So, the
IPhone takes the sympatico seeemlessly and sets it up as a hotmail using
active exchange. So my client has this shiny new IPad with his hotmail data
for sympatico syncing nicely to the sympatico server. Now we need to make
outlook 2007 sync his calendar and contacts up through AE as well. Is this
possible? I tried to hack it and nearly pooched the poor guy's pst file.
Can't really find anything in three or four web searches I've tried. I
thought maybe if I could get him a skydrive, maybe that would sync his old
data up to the hotmail exchange and deliver it to his ipad.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

exercise descriptions for Move

2013-02-18 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

My son helped me with two of the exercises in the app Move that didn't have
clear audio explanations. Here are the descriptions we came up with.

Burpees: Do pushups on your knees, but after each one, stand up and jump once.

Hindu squats: Put your feet a little more than hip width apart. Squat down and
return to standing, and while you do this, do arm circles.

HTH,
Anna

I don't have any experience of Media5Phone. There are quite a few accessible
SIP products out there that all seem to work quite well. Groundwire, Acrobits
big brother, is also very good. Bria is another one although when I used it it

Good to know.
I had not taken the time to investigate. I suspect the same will be true

The Numbers App,

2013-02-18 Thread Richard Turner
I created a new subject line as too many comments about the Numbers app were
being made under the subject of Pages.

Numbers may be slightly more useful with a braille display or blue tooth
keyboard. It is not very useful when only interacting through the screen.

I have not done much with it because it isn't going to be all that useful to
me even with a keyboard or braille display. Mostly because of the screen
size, there isn't enough room to do much on the phone or Touch.

Re: Correction on keyboards

2013-02-18 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
HI,

Thanks for this. We were talking more about ways to check spelling after
finishing typing text. In my case I use almost exclusively the Braille touch
app when I don't have a BT keyboard around. Gets pretty fast but I miss correct
spelling features.

So for this the touchtype is a pretty ok alternative. It has many languages by
the way.

Best,

Ioana

Numbers doesn't work at all with speach. You can bring up a
spreadsheet, but then things go down hill fast. There is no way to
navigate between rows, unless you swipe left or right the width of the
columns for the row, to get to the next row. Also an edit dialog
pop-up seems to come up every time you touch a cell, not allowing you
to do much of anything. In all I have found it completely unuseable

Yes iBooks is good for PDF, I see that Dropbox just added a PDF reader in their

Re: Keyboard Commands for the iPhone

2013-02-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
yes, there is. What happens when you use control+down-arrow?

Assuming you have quick nav enabled, use left-arrow+right-arrow to
toggle this on and off, you should be able to use control+down-arrow to
get to the last object on the page, back up a few objects with the
left-arrow until you get to the Reply button and then double tap it with
the up-arrow+down-arrow key combination.

I do it all the time. Control down arrow takes you to the bottom of the

double pap that & it will ask you if you want to reply to this message,
double tap that and you're good to go. If you want another option just

I did some digging, so I probably already know the answer, but I'm wondering if
anyone on the list has tried playing the game Tiny Tower, and if so, how
accessible/useable is it with VO? I know a few folks who play it, and wouldn't
mind joining them. But, since they don't use VO I can't very well judge
anything by that. So, if anyone's given it a shot, how much of a headache is
it? Thanks either way.

Tiny Tower: accessible or no?

2013-02-18 Thread James Homuth
I did some digging, so I probably already know the answer, but I'm wondering
if anyone on the list has tried playing the game Tiny Tower, and if so, how
accessible/useable is it with VO? I know a few folks who play it, and
wouldn't mind joining them. But, since they don't use VO I can't very well
judge anything by that. So, if anyone's given it a shot, how much of a
headache is it? Thanks either way.

Hi all.

Today I grabed a nice little app called package tracker and it looks

the edit boxes are not labled. There are 2 of them. Anyone here using this
app and could tell me what box is which? Thanks. Great app.

BTW the price is $0.99.

Re: Keyboard Commands for the iPhone

2013-02-18 Thread Les Kriegler
Thanks for everyone who sent links to files and the text of files listing these
commands. Very helpful. I have not figured out a way to reply to e-mail
messages using the bluetooth keyboard. I don't seem to be able to move to the
reply button using control-down arrow either. Is there a way to reply and send
e-mails using the keyboard or is this not supported?

RE: Fleksy is now free

2013-02-18 Thread Rose Combs
I bought it the day it was released, $14.95 or so, then I tried it and never
got the hang of it. Gave my 4 to my husband, he tried it, never got the
hang of it. So I figure I supported an app that would help others if not
me.

Siri is much easier.

Re: A great new carier for your iPhone: unlimited everything $49 per month!

2013-02-18 Thread erik burggraaf
I'll believe the cheep iphone stories when I see the product, but as of now
it's just noise. Remember the big roomer about apple coming out with AMD based
computers for half to 2/3 the price of the current lines? That never happened.
The cheep IPhone isn't on the way.

Your business executive was right though, in another 3 years the flip phone
will be a thing of the past. market research shows that over 50 per sent of
the cell phones in the world are now smart phones as of about 2011. As the
flip phones end of life they are being replaced with smart phones, in part
because people are doing away with the personal computer as well. In 2016 the
personal computer goes on the longtale and a significant market share will be
doing business completely on smartphones or tablets.

 Hi Dave,

I highly doubt that at least in the short to medium term Apple will
suddenly start to sell a new iPhone for $399 or $499. Apple is one of
the few companies who is actually making a good margin on their products
meaning unlike Amazon which basically gives a Kindle Fire away at cost
or even below cost to get people to use their service, Apple sells the
iPad at a price where they make money. Keep in mind that if they sold an
iPhone for a greatly reduced price, people would no longer buy an iPod
Touch and would expect iPad and iPad Mini prices to come down as well. I
somehow don’t forsee any changes in how big carriers do business and
believe they will continue to offer contracts and subsidized phones.
Keep in mind that a carrier like the one mentioned may offer an
unlimited plan for $49 with no contract, but they will not give you a 16
Gb iPhone 5 for $199, instead you have to pay $649 and buy one at full
price. The math is easy: Over 2 years you spend 24 month times $49 a
 month = $1,176 + $649 for the iPhone which means a total of $1,825.

Now assume you are on contract and spend $80 a month, the total is 24
 times $80 = $1,920 + $199 for the phone = $2,119.

So, yes, the contract does cost you $294 more over 2 years given you do
actually have a $80 plan, if you find one that is $70 which maybe gives
you 2 Gig of data and limited voice, but maybe it’s all you need then
the total would be $1,879 over 2 years which is only $64 more. For many
people it’s easier to spend an extra $20 or $30 a months without having

Hi David that's interesting about where you put the iphone. on my
apex of course there is a strap which you put over your shoulder so
when carrying my piano tuning bag to clip the iphone near your ear
will make it better. so if your gps system keeps anouncing where you
are that's a great help.
I find when on a bus say I do not put a route in the gps as the bus
goes round estates I just put in a destination and have anouncments
to where I am.
Now when I get off the bus I put in a route to the house where I am
doing the piano tuning.
