Selecting Text Using a Braille Display?

2013-06-25 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, folks,

Is there a way to select text with a Braille display without double-tapping the
screen? If I use the rotor to chose edit and then select all, then use the
router keys on the Braille display, nothing happens. I used to use the
selection key on my Focus 40, but its function has changed to starting and
stopping music.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Teresa

No, only the 4s or higher. Ariadne will announce the nearby address every 30
seconds or so when you have monitoring turned on. You then just need to train

RE: Mophie Juice Pack Air for 4S

2013-06-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Check how many Milliamps the battery of the Mophie Juice Pack Air has. An
iPhone 4S battery has 1432 Milliamps and if an external battery/battery case
is supposed to provide a full charge it has to have at least that much and,
in my experience, a bit more capacity than that. I have a MyCharge Peak
6,000 which has 6,000 Milliamps. This means it should charge the iPhone
about 4 times since 1432 Milliamps times 4 is 5,728. However, in my
experience I get about 3 charges out of it if I recharge when the battery on
the iPhone is between 20 and 30%. If I let it run down almost completely to
maybe only 2 or 3%, I probably get 2 and a bit from the Peak 6,000. It would
be my guess that a battery would have to have at least 1,600 or 1,800 for it
to comfortably charge an iPhone fully. If it has only 1,000 or 1,200 MA it
will probably charge the iPhone back to 70 or 80% if you start the recharge
at the 20% warning.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Mophie Juice Pack Air for 4S

2013-06-25 Thread Cristóbal
I got a refurbished model (2000 mAh) for $15.00. A very solid buy. The
charging cable could be a bit longer, but that's a minor inconvenience and
has nothing to do with the pack itself. Much cheaper than taking it
somewhere to have the battery swapped out. If I were more mecanically
inclined, I would have even given it a go to switch the battery myself, but
now that I have the battery pack on my phone, it's not a concern.

RE: Thoughts on the latest Audible update

2013-06-25 Thread Sarah Cranston
Hi Arnold,

I don't think there is a Jump Forward button. While there is a jump forward
gesture in the button-free mode, this is not an actual button. As the name
implies, Button-free mode doesn't have buttons. It was created for sighted
users who need to operate their phones while driving and shouldn't be looking
at the screen. All the gestures in the button-free mode are not dependent on
finding the exact placement of a button. As far as I know none of the Audible
players have ever had a Jump Forward button that jumps forward the same amount
of time as the Jump Back button jumps back. Have you asked a sighted person to
look at the Audible app on your phone? Is there a button there that VO can't
see?

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi Arnold,

Yes, I still use the Jump Back button since I can set it to go 60 seconds or 90
seconds whereas the swipe gesture goes forward or back by 30 seconds. This
gesture has been there for a while, it was not in the original 2.0 release, but
I think in the next one. Now in the last version we also have Previous and Next
Chapter buttons again and everything is almost perfect.

A good feature: I don't know how long this has been available, it may have
come with the update before this one, I just figured it out with this update.
Even though I still wish the jump forward button were visible to VoiceOver,
there is a way to move around in a chapter, even while it is playing, so
perhaps it makes the jump forward and backward buttons redundant. Before, we had
to turn VoiceOver off and go into button free mode to jump forward, but now,I
can touch just slightly down from the top right of the screen, just to the
left of where it says how much total time is left , and it says the progress in
the current chapter, and that it can be changed by swiping up and down. I
really like this ability.

Hello List,

I am curious what people think about the most recent Audible update (version
2.0.4 from June 18).
Now that the Previous and Next chapter buttons are back on the main screen I
think this app the best it has ever been.

One thing I have not yet figured out is how one uses the volume button to
change the volume. When I double tap it Voiceover says 66% adjustable, but
swiping up or down then seems to change my playback position rather than the
volume. Of course I can simply increase or decrease the volume using the volume
buttons on the phone and I am only curious as to how it works with the volume
button since using the physical buttons on the phone makes a lot more sense to
me in any case.

I'd also like to hear how easy people find it to locate the Airplay and Volume
button by moving your finger around the screen. Not sure if it's just me, but I
think they are quite small and you really have to be right on them. I also find
it not very intuitive that Audible has changed the order these buttons show up
when you swipe from left to right. Physically at the very top left of the
screen is the Back button, just a bit to the right of that is the Airplay
button. Then there seems to be a gap and on the right side of the screen is
first the Volume button and then at the very top right is the Product Info
button. However, if you put your finger on the Back button and swipe right
once, Voiceover skips the Airplay button which is next and goes to the Volume
button. Another swipe then takes you correctly to the right and onto the
Product Info button and only a third swipe takes you back

RE: Thoughts on the latest Audible update

2013-06-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sarah,

I think you explain it well, button-free mode works with gestures like a
swipe left for Jump Back, a swipe right for Jump Forward, I believe a swipe
down inserts a Bookmark and I can't remember what the swipe up does.

I think it also makes sense in a way, I find for the most part that I want
to go back rather than forward so the Jump Back button makes more sense than
a Jump Forward button. In any case, the Jump forward and jump Back by 30
seconds is available via a single finger swipe up or down once you touch the
Time elapsed readout where Voiceover says, for example, 1 minute 43 seconds
in current chapter, adjustable.

I think the current version of the Audible app is the best it has ever been
and the below 3 things are the only improvements/fixes I'd like to see:

1. Voiceover feedback for the currently highlighted chapter on the
Chapters and Bookmarks page. Here the currently playing chapter is visually
highlighted and I'd love it if Voiceover would indicate which chapter is
playing when you move through the list by saying something like currently
playing, Chapter 5.

2. Sleeptimer: it would be really nice if there was an option to reset
the sleep timer before it runs out and stops playback. The dedicated
sleeptimer app iTired does this beautifully by allowing you to set a time
interval, for example, 10 seconds or 20 seconds during which a subtle tone
plays. You can also select the tone you want although I'd be quite happy if
Audible selected a tone which wasn't intrusive enough to wake me up if I was
falling asleep and if it played it for 10 seconds before playback stops.
Then any action like pressing the Home Key or a volume key would indicate
that I am still awake and want to reset the sleeptimer to whichever
selection I had chosen.

3. Time remaining readout: This seems to be a bit inconsistent because
I have quite a few books which I played to the end and which, when I look at
the parts of the book, all say they have nothing left, but when I go back to
the main book list, it shows there is a couple of minutes left.

Apart from this I think the app is fantastic.

Sieghard

GPS issues - request clarification

RE: Will the voice for iOS announce street names as you go by the while on a bus? Or what other app does

2013-06-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, Ariadne announces addresses and cross streets. However, I find the most
reliable and best app by far for having cross streets announced is
BlindSquare. BlindSquare also does not have to be in the foreground for it
to work, in fact, I can lock my phone and it works fine.

In addition I can open the Nearest Intersections option in Tools and if I
focus Voiceover on a particular intersection it get a continuous readout of
distance and direction by clockface. I find this can be very useful if I
have to walk across a large parking lot towards an intersection where maybe
I have to make my way around parked cars or other obsticles.

Only suggestion I have and which I have been meaning to email to the
developer about is that it would be nice if another app like Audible could
be playing as well. I find that if Audible is playing BlindSquare either
won't announce anything or Audible will pause for the BlindSquare
announcement and then won't resume playing. Since BlindSquare has it's own
voice couldn't this be fixed? I can have Audible or the Music app playing
when Navigon is running in the background and the Navigon announcements
simply play on top of whatever else is playing and they quiet down the other
audio so it's easy to hear them.there should be

Re: Mophie Juice Pack Air for 4S

Don't know if we had this model, but the Mophie's we had were very
brickesque, and slick, shaped like a nice new tablet of soap, and skates

at least you get to charge it on a really common micro-USBlead.

Have you used the Mophie Juice Pack Air phone case with battery for your 4S?
It is supposed to almost double your iPhone talk time between charges. I am
looking to get this so that I may last a whole day with my 4S. Any comments?
Web reviews are very contradictory. Some swear by it and some call it trash.
Will appreciate actual user remarks. Thanks in anticipation!

Only suggestion I have and which I have been meaning to email to the

I did actually get Ariadne to do this. It reads out addresses about every 20

RE: announcements if using speaker or earphones

2013-06-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Dan,

There is no feature which allows you to do this, but there are some ways
which work and which may or may not work for you.

When you are on a call and Voiceover announces the call duration, take your
phone away from your ear and let it switch to speaker (not necessary if you
use a headset). Now flick focus of Voiceover away from the call duration
maybe to the End Call button. According to some people on the list this
permanently prevents Voiceover from announcing the call duration unless
focus is moved back to that area. I should say that for me on my 4S this is
not a fix, even if I do this, once the call continues for a while, at some
point Voiceover will say Screen Locked, then maybe within 20 or 30 seconds
after that Voiceover continues to announce the call duration every 20
seconds.

Alternatively, and this work-around definitely works, you can turn speech
off with a 3-finger double tap once the call has started. This is not the
same as getting rid of Voiceover altogether with a triple click of the home
key. The 3-finger double tap will make Voiceover say Speech Off and after
that you will not hear Voiceover again until you do another 3-finger double
tap and Voiceover says Speech On. While speech is off Voiceover gestures
still work, e.g. you can still use a 2-finger double tap to end the call. If
your phone locks that is no problem either, the 3-finger double tap to mute
speech also works in the lock screen which makes it easy to turn the speech
back on after your call.

The only disadvantage is that you have to get your phone out of your pocket
or possibly belt clip or backpack. I find using this method to mute
Voiceover is OK at home when I have the phone in my hand, but it's not a
good solution if I am out and about and I have an incoming call because more
often than not I use my wired or Bluetooth headset to answer the call and
really have no need to touch the phone if it weren't for this annoying
babble during the call.

I have written to accessibil...@apple.com and I would urge you to do so.
Some people on the list argue they like Voiceover to talk during a call, I
think it's super annoying because if I get a push notification or text
message and Voiceover starts reading it while I am talking to somebody it is
normally not possible to continue the conversation. I often had to ask the
other person to hold for a moment while I dug my phone out of my pocket so I
could shut it up. I have no problem hearing whatever sound I set for
incoming text messages, push notifications and so on, but apart from that I
think a phone call should have priority over Voiceover reading out incoming
alerts or messages and I definitely don't need Voiceover to tell me every 20
seconds the call duration, if I really want to know how long I've been on
the phone I can easily find that and check it manually. Let's hope Apple has
that fixed in iOS 7.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: announcements if using speaker or earphones

2013-06-25 Thread Bob Straughn, WR4FSU, LAPTOP
Dan, the way I do this is to do a 3-finger double-tap to temporarily turn
Voice-Over on off.

In other words, use SIRI to tell the phone to make your call when the call
starts ringing, use your 3-fingers to turn V-O off.

Now, when you get a call, use your 3-finger double-tap to immediately turn V-O
off right after you answer the call with a 2-finger double-tap.

This is for the I-Phone 4 4S.

and is driving me crazy.

Is there a way on an IPhone 5 to turn these announcements off too?

  Thanks.

I don't know when it is going to be released, but I do know that they said they
*hoped* it would be ready for release around convention time. They didn't say
it was a sure thing, not a should be, but just they hoped it would be ready.

Anyhow, there were some bugs that I imagine they want to get out of the app
first. They are damned either way. If they release it and there's a bug,
tney'll get slammed. If they don't release it around convention time, tey'll
get equally slammed. I almost wish they had not given a release date.

Re: Selecting Text Using a Braille Display?

2013-06-25 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Teresa.

You know the command space + dots 2.3.5.6 it selects all. There are missing
something. Another thing that often goes wrong for me is when succeeded in
selecting the text, I can not get allowed to copy it, unless i choose copy, and
press the copy button, you ought only to press space +c for copying.

There's another thing I do not understand, sometimes it works to select text
and sometimes it is really difficult to get to work.

Maybe somebody can come up with some detailed instructions for selecting and
copying.

Cheers Annie.

Re: announcements if using speaker or earphones

2013-06-25 Thread Alan Paganelli
The biggest drawback to this 3 finger double tap to turn speech back on is, it
works peachy-dandy unless your a bit forgetful at times like I am. grin
Other distractions come up and you forget about the phone and at some other
point in time, there you are tapping and flicking etc, and wondering why Voice
Over remains silent. And then there's this grate epiphany!and another ah-uh
moment! grin Have a great day all!

Subject: RE: announcements if using speaker or earphones

  Hi Dan,

There is no feature which allows you to do this, but there are some ways
which work and which may or may not work for you.

When you are on a call and Voiceover announces the call duration, take your
phone away from your ear and let it switch to speaker (not necessary if you use
a headset). Now flick focus of Voiceover away from the call duration maybe to
the End Call button. According to some people on the list this permanently
prevents Voiceover from announcing the call duration unless focus is moved back
to that area. I should say that for me on my 4S this is not a fix, even if I do
this, once the call continues for a while, at some point Voiceover will say
Screen Locked, then maybe within 20 or 30 seconds after that Voiceover
continues to announce the call duration every 20 seconds.

Alternatively, and this work-around definitely works, you can turn speech off
with a 3-finger double tap once the call has started. This is not the same as
getting rid of Voiceover altogether with a triple click of the home key. The
3-finger double tap will make Voiceover say Speech Off and after that you
will not hear Voiceover again until you do another 3-finger double tap and
Voiceover says Speech On. While speech is off Voiceover gestures still work,
e.g. you can still use a 2-finger double tap to end the call. If your phone
locks that is no problem either, the 3-finger double tap to mute speech also
works in the lock screen which makes it easy to turn the speech back on after
your call.

The only disadvantage is that you have to get your phone out of your pocket
or possibly belt clip or backpack. I find using this method to mute Voiceover
is OK at home when I have the phone in my hand, but it's not a good solution if
I am out and about and I have an incoming call because more often than not I
use my wired or Bluetooth headset to answer the call and really have no need to
touch the phone if it weren't for this annoying babble during the call.

I have written to accessibil...@apple.com and I would urge you to do so. Some
people on the list argue they like Voiceover to talk during a call, I think
it's super annoying because if I get a push notification or text message and
Voiceover starts reading it while I am talking to somebody it is normally not
possible to continue the conversation. I often had to ask the other person to
hold for a moment while I dug my phone out of my pocket so I could shut it up.
I have no problem hearing whatever sound I set for incoming text messages, push
notifications and so on, but apart from that I think a phone call should have
priority over Voiceover reading out incoming alerts or messages and I
definitely don't need Voiceover to tell me every 20 seconds the call duration,
if I really want to know how long I've been on the phone I can easily find that
and check it manually. Let's hope Apple has that fixed in iOS 7.

  Regards,

  Sieghard

  Hi,

I have managed to use tips from this list to turn off auto announcements of
caller and time in call. However, if I use the speaker or earphones it still
announces the caller and duration of the call. this happens every few seconds
and is driving me crazy.

Is there a way on an IPhone 5 to turn these announcements off too?

Re: Deleting Something From My Safari Reading List?

2013-06-25 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Sometimes, for reasons unknown to me, it gets to where the flick up and down,
such as to move it from one home screen to another, won't work. I have to turn
it off, then back on, to get it to work again. I didn't realize, when the
flick down to delete wasn't working that it was in one of its moods again. It
works now, after turning it off and on.

Swipe down to the link that you wish to delete. Don't open the page. Use the
up and down flick gesture, you should hear delete and default for options.
Double tap when delete is heard.

Is there a button there that VO can't
see?

This gesture has been there for a while, it was not in the original 2.0

RE: Thoughts on the latest Audible update

2013-06-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Arnold,

You turn Voiceover off, then touch at the very bottom just above the home
key and do a single finger swipe up. If you hit it right this will enable
button free mode, you can simply check if it worked by doing a single finger
swipe left to right to see if it jumps forward or right to left to see if it
jumps back. I found it to be tricky to start the swipe up at the right
point, if you touch a bit too high you activate the Chapters and Bookmarks
button and I really don't find a need for it since I can touch the playback
position and then flick up or down and get the same functionality without
having to turn off Voiceover.

Re: Selecting Text Using a Braille Display?

2013-06-25 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
I tried this using a BrailleNote Apex while in the Notes app and had no
luck. Two questions:

Do I have to be in some sort of edit box to get this to work?
If not, can I select text in Safari or in the mail app, or while reading a
book using iBooks, Kindle or read2go?

Curious about this because pinching in and out is clumsy for me.

Hi, Richard,

Thanks much. I'm familiar with those commands, but they only select
character, word, and line, depending on the rotor setting. I'd like to
select larger chunks of text, including all, from cursor to end, and from
cursor to beginning.

Thanks,

Hi, folks,

Is there a way to select text with a Braille display without
double-tapping
the screen? If I use the rotor to chose edit and then select all,
then
use the router keys on the Braille display, nothing happens. I used to
use
the selection key on my Focus 40, but its function has changed to
starting

and stopping music.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

RE: IPod touch fourth-generation got stuck in Australian English

2013-06-25 Thread Alan Lemly
Engage the rotor by doing the knob turn gesture until you get to language.
Then flick up or down to the desired language. Make sure you then set the
rotor on something like words or characters to avoid inadvertently changing
the language again.

I am stoked about using Tap Tap See to identify a bunch of cans, bottle and boxes

2013-06-25 Thread Teresa Christian
I was able to identify and label a huge amount of cans, bottles and
cans this evening using Tap Tap See. Yay, yahoo, woohoo for being able
to get it done with no sighted assistance.

When I first got the app, I got frustrated because it didn't seem to
work very well. Because of all the stories I have read on this email
list I thought I'd give it another try and it worked. It worked very
well.

Thanks, Teresa

Re: Braille Touch Update? Curious..........

2013-06-25 Thread Eileens Misrahi
Hello,

I know that you made reference to BrailleTouch and an update to have access to
contracted braille. I want to let you know that MBraille has just been release
and is in the app store. The app support contracted and uncontracted braille.
One can text, tweet, Facebook, email, and set appointments directly from the
app. You can preview what you have wiritten by characters, words, and
sentences. Editing is available to copy, cut, or paste text. You can set
appointments with alarms. Currently, MBraille support 6 languages, with more
languages to be supported in the future. As a tester of this app, it has been a
pleasure to be able to create text, edit, and increase my speed in performing
these tasks with confidence. I am sure that you will enjoy the app as much as I
have so far. You can download the free version and take it for a test drive
before purchasing the full version. HTH.

Best,
