Would someone be willing to walk me through how to use the Kindle app by phone?

Hello. Would someone on this list be willing to talk with me by phone and 
show me how to use the kindle appp? I would also like to learn a few tricks 
on how to use safari more efficiently. And I would like to learn how to 
select text, copy and paste it. I learn better when someone walks me through 
it by phone, so I can ask questions as I go along. Please let me know. Any 
help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

The path that I stated before should lead you to Location Services. No you 
shouldn't have to have the app Tap Tap See open to find Location Services for 
the app. Yes, Red Laser and All Access need Location Services turned on, so 
that you are able to gather info from your general area. Photos and camera 
doesn't necessarily need Location Services turned on. All this does if Location 
Services are turned on for Photos and camera is to stamp your coordinance on 
the photos info. If this info is presented to the general public and if the 
photo happends to have been taken in or around your house, your address can be 
obtained.

Here is the instructions to get you to Location Services once again..

 From the Home screen of your device Go To

Settings and double tap to open.
Swipe down to Privacy
Swipe to Location Services this should be the first in the list. You should hear 
Voiceover read Location Services ON -Button-
Double tap to open Location Services and then Swipe down until you hear Tap Tap 
See.

Double tap on Tap Tap See to turn on Location Services.

The list of apps will also include camera, photos, blogger, Safari, Seri, All 
Access, Red Laser, Maps, and any other apps that you may be using that would 
require your location to give you the best possible info and results.

Not all of the apps listed will necessarily need Location Services turned on. 
This will depend on how frequently you use the app. For example, I have 
Location Services turned OFF for Seri, because I have disabled Seri because I 
refuse to use the comedian! But I have Location Services turned ON for TuneIn 
Radio, so that I am able to gather info on my local radio stations.

   It's not there for me- I even launched the app to see if that would cause it 
to show up, but IT'S still not there. Should it be there regardless of whether 
location services were turned on during installing or licensing or whatever?



   I have a iPhone4, does that explain the difference in what you are seeing 
and what is available on my phone?



   Under a different path- General/Restrictions/Privacy- location services is 
'dimmed'- but don't exactly know what that really means.



   Under the location path you mentioned, I wonder if All Access, Camera, 
Photos, and Red Laser really require location services?

For those who don't know how to re lable buttons, when your in shut 
the box chrome, touch the first button in the top left corner of the 
screen.  Now using 2 fingers, do a double tap and hold until you 
hear a series of tones.  when the tones stop beeping, your now in a 
text box.  Delete the text that's already there and then just switch 
to numbers on the virtual keypad and enter in the correct 
number.  Then double tap the save button.  Yes it's a pane in the 
butt to have to rename all 9 buttons but in the end if you did it 
right, the buttons from left to right should now read, 1, 2, 3, 4, 
5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.  Don't forget after renaming each button to hit 
the save button or the next time you open the game, it will go back 
to the previous named button.  Let me know what you think after 
you've fixed it.

There was an update to this game not long ago.  I haven't played it
in awhile.  So when I read the trouble others are having, I decided
to try mine.  What ever they did, the game went from accessible to
not accessible.  To bad too because it was one of those games that
seems to be pretty simple.  It is until you try it.  Then you find
yourself saying things like ok one more time!  Sorry friends but it
was accessible.  I'm disappointed that now it isn't.

I have this same problem with STB chrome. The problem seems to come
and go without any reason. I have been able to just  work around the
game. After rolling the dice when you go through the boxes and VO
announces the boxes as being labled as T1, T2, T3 etc this is the
same as when VO will announce the boxes as properly labeled 1-9. So
in my observation of playing the game on a daily basis and the game
responding differently with VO with any game play on any given day I
can say that this is a flaw in the game itself. You could try
clearing the game from the app switcher before opening the game to
play. This helps sometimes but isn't a cure all fix.

Hi Jack,

I am not aware of an app like that and I assume you are looking for a map
app since you are asking this on the Viphone list. Even if this existed, I
think it would be very difficult to display an entire state on a 3.5 screen
or even a 4 screen if you have an iPhone 5.

For something like this I prefer the good old tactile method which I know
may not be not what you are looking for, it has nothing to do with iOS and
it requires a friend or family member who is willing to put in a bit of time
for you.

Basically, go and get a paper map of the particular State or, if you like
the entire USA. Also get a tube of that glue stuff Maxiaids and many other
places sell for marking stuf, after it hardens you can touch it and feel the
lines and dots. This way a sighted person can put dots on cities, they could
make lines to delineate the borders/outlines of States etc. They could even
make large dots and smaller ones to indicate how large the cities are, there
are a lot of possibilities. A friend once made me a map of Vancouver that
way outlining where the coast and the water was, the Fraser River, downtown
and the various cities that make up metro Vancouver. It gave me a really
nice understanding and visual image of how this was all laid out.

Each day i am informed concerning my favorite team of when the game starts, 
when they score and the final score of the game. In fact, sometimes I am 
informed of the final score before the game is finished, kind of a hoot, 
really. The only thing is that I am often informed in the middle of the night 
that the C G, condensed game for the previous day is available, is their any 
way to turn off only this communication?

are a lot of possibilities. A friend once made me a map of Vancouver that
way outlining where the coast and the water was, the Fraser River, downtown
and the various cities that make up metro Vancouver. It gave me a really
nice understanding and visual image of how this was all laid out.

Yes i can recommend a good noise cancelation headphones they have a 
great battery Life. They last 20 hours. you c't turn the base up with 
the Iphone they work with the Android, Noise cancelation is wonderful 
sound is okay they are the Knokia bh905's. i am looking for a good pair 
probably will get the Beats Solo hd,headphones. Does anyone have a 
recommendation for some phones that are efficient, like the Beats. They

Hi all,

How does one change notification settings for apps like Viber and
Whatsapp on Nokia Lumia 710 (Windows Phone)? For instance, when a call
is received on Viber, the phone does not ring. There is only a single
notification sound and the phone only starts ringing when you open
Viber. This is a nuisance since many times, you are away from your
phone and you may not hear the single notification sound. So, how does
one change the setting so that the phone rings continuously when there
is an incoming call on Viber, just like it happens on other platform
devices like iOS and Android?

Also, is there something like a notification settings menu or
something of that sort for adjusting notification settings for
individual apps on Lumia 710 (Windows 7.5)?

I would really appreciate any help I can get in this regard,

IStore and Jaws

Hi Folks,
I'm new to the list, new to Apple products, and I have a brand new I4S.  My 
first big snafu is trying to make the Jaws forms mode work with the IStore 
registration form.  I can get into forms mode with the enter key, but it won't 
let me enter any data.  I'm using Jaws 12.  I thought it would be faster on my 
familiar old desktop than on this amazing new phone, Lol.  Do any Jaws users 
have a suggestion here?

Lets be honest here, how many of us here truely go to the developer
website and read in details about what the app has to offer before
purchasing the app?

Just because it is a purpose build app/map/gps for the blind
therefore, it should have full on 100% praise on the app/map/gps?

I think, it is about time to have more of a constructive discussion as
to why, and why not, instead of because it is from Sendero, or because
its purposely build for the blind, thereofre we need to support it, or
not supporting it.

As someone who traveling a lot, both within Austrlasia and different
parts of the world, i don't see why Sendero  can't include other maps
in the thing. One would think it will be much easier to include the
choice of other maps, considering its on subscription base. e.g. North
American and Europe map for $99 per year, or North America maps only
for $69, and some other option like if you want to travel from
Australia to America, and only wish to be there for 32 days, you can
subscribe to the app for $15 for 30 days or such.

Frankly speaking, what i found with the Sendero  arguement, it has
turning to become Apple vs Freedom Scientific arguement, as some anti
Apple blind user that could point out, in some other blind list,
Freedom Scientific keeps blind people employ therefore i don't see
why i should support Apple who don't employ blind people. Now, how
true is that statement? for some blind people they believe that its so
true that they can't see any alternative but uses Jaws and WindowXP,
and using Talks with their very old Nokia Phone.

I'd hold off until Apple comes out with their new technology phones I just 
heard about this morning on the news.  They are said to adjust the sound each 
time you put them on as far as equalization is concerned so that you always 
have perfect sound.  That's a pretty tall order to fill.  I don't remember what 
they are going to be called as I heard it but was in another room and came 
running to listen to the rest.  Maybe iPhone life magazine will have something 
about them.

Hmmm am i on the wrong list here or is he. Staying on topic for iOs, you 
cannot have Viber or other Voip apps to ring when the app is closed in 
the app switcher. I don't know if this is an Apple restriction. Viber 
however does notify you of missed calls via a push notification.

iTunes and Most Compatible Screen Reader

I use ZoomText 10 and although it is better than past versions, it is unable
to read anything presented in the iTunes Store screens. That information
appears to be graphical as opposed to conventional text characters so I'm
wondering which screen readers are able to read it. As my vision continues
to decline, I'm starting to think about screen reader alternatives but I
want to learn one that is best suited to read this graphically-presented
text. I expect we'll see this trend continue since I guess doing this stuff
graphically looks really cool which seems to be the driving factor in the
marketplace.

 

I use Amazon to purchase my music and was disappointed to learn last night
that in order to download those tracks to my computer, their old mp3
downloader program no longer works and I had to install their desktop Cloud
Player. This Cloud Player almost makes iTunes seem very accessible. It
presents everything graphically except for the conventional menu accessed by
the button at the top left. ZoomText can't read any of the content so I'm
wondering how other screen readers work in this environment.

Just thought I point out that while VoIP apps may not ring, Groundwire from
the developer Acrobits (see link and app description below) will send a push
notification which allows you to answer an incoming VoIP call even if the
app is removed from the app switcher. This of course requires you to have an
inbound VoIP number registered with a service and then to set up this
service in the Groundwire app which allows you to set up multiple VoIP
accounts. I have setup a VoIP Stunt account for outgoing calls and I use
SIP2SIP for my incoming VoIP number which I obtained from Flynumber.com
($2.95 a month) with unlimited forwarding to my SIP2SIP account. It works
like a charm, Groundwire is fully accessible, but at $9.99 it's not cheap as

several questions that I have, rather then to send multiple messages asking one 
question and each message. I wanted to know, how to select text? Also, how do 
you copy and paste the text into another document?  Concerning mail, I have 
just set up my email to come to my iPhone, as of today. What I would like to 
know is, if I receive a message, that I would like to have on my computer as 
well, in my email client, if it comes to my phone, how do I ensure that. I have 
a copy of it on my computer as well? Would I have to forward it to myself? Or 
is there another way to do that? Thanks.

Hi Chasity,

To select text, you use a pinching gesture. You pinch outward to select text, 
and pinch inwardly to deselect text. It's honestly a really confusing gesture, 
which is why i hardly ever use it, and just use a bluetooth keyboard. As far as 
copying the pasting text into another document, you use the order. To access 
that, rotate 2 fingers on the screen like you're turning a dial until you hear 
edit. Flick down with one finger until you hear copy, double tap, and then go 
to the document you want to paste into, use the order   to select paste, and 
double tap.
Secondly, when you set up your email, it should've set it up as imap, which 
will keep everything in sync across your phone and computer.

left. ZoomText can't read any of the content so I'm wondering how other screen 
readers work in this environment.

What is the band width of Skype audio?

Hi, Does anyone know how many KBPs or some other measure would be used by an
audio call in Skype in a given time period? I don't worry about this when I
am on wireless, but if I am not, I would like to know how much data I am
using.

Concerning email, Chas, what I do is to have one email account on my 
computer and one on my phone so if I want a message to be on my puter I can 
always forward it to my other email address.

many warnings about this issue, one as recent as last week.

   

  If it wasn't for the people who continue to give good, helpful information on 
this list I would unsubscribe to keep from having to spend most of my time 
hitting the delete key, which is what I do now.

   and go without any reason. I have been able to just  work around the
   game. After rolling the dice when you go through the boxes and VO
   announces the boxes as being labled as T1, T2, T3 etc this is the
   same as when VO will announce the boxes as properly labeled 1-9. So
   in my observation of playing the game on a daily basis and the game
   responding differently with VO with any game play on any given day I
   can say that this is a flaw in the game itself. You could try
   clearing the game from the app switcher before opening the game to
   play. This helps sometimes but isn't a cure all fix.

Chastity, I'll add a couple of comments to Daniel's reply below. Your
questions involve the use of the rotor, that's spelled r o t o r, not order
as Daniel stated in his message. The rotor is accessed by a gesture that is
like turning a knob. What is presented when you access the rotor will be a
function of where focus happens to be and what you have turned on to be
available as rotor options in the settings menu. You access these settings
through Settings, General, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Rotor. You select the
various options by placing focus on each and double tapping. VoiceOver
should announce selected for the ones you have marked as you cycle through
the list.

Selecting text is one of the most difficult things I've found on my iPhone.
Daniel is correct about pinching out to select and pinching in to de-select
text. I believe you should use the rotor to first set the level of text you
desire to select. For example, you would place the rotor setting on words if
you want to select a word at a time. Other choices you might consider could
be lines or characters. Again, make sure you have everything turned on in
settings that you want to be available in the rotor.

After the text you want has been selected, you should cycle the rotor until
VoiceOver announces Edit. Then you can swipe up or down with one finger for
VoiceOver to announce the Edit options which are available. When it says
copy, you would double tap to copy the selected text. When you get to the
location where you want to put it, go to the rotor again by doing the knob
turn gesture. It should still be on Edit but you can do the knob-turn
gesture to confirm that. Then, you would do a one-finger swipe up or down
until you hear paste and then you would double tap to paste it.

I hope this helps but post back if you have other questions or if you come
up with an easy way to make the text selection process work better. I'd love
to hear it.

To select text, you use a pinching gesture. You pinch outward to select
text, and pinch inwardly to deselect text. It's honestly a really confusing
gesture, which is why i hardly ever use it, and just use a bluetooth
keyboard. As far as copying the pasting text into another document, you use
the order. To access that, rotate 2 fingers on the screen like you're
turning a dial until you hear edit. Flick down with one finger until you
hear copy, double tap, and then go to the document you want to paste into,
use the orderto select paste, and double tap.
Secondly, when you set up your email, it should've set it up as imap, which
will keep everything in sync across your phone and computer.

As far as copying and pasting is concerned, I will simply refer you to an
excellent Podcasts or, as he calls them, demo-casts, from Garth from
Australia which you find on his website along with many more very useful
Podcasts covering a wide variety of topics. If you are a relatively new
iPhone user, his Podcasts actually are very much setup to cover basic topics
all the way to the more advanced stuff and there are already a total of 50
of them. You find them at the following URL:

The one about selecting, copying and pasting text is Episode 12 from July

As far as synchronizing your email and possibly contacts between your
computer and iPhone, you should first find out whether your provider allows
you to setup your email account as a POP account only or whether you can set
it up as a IMAP account. If IMAP is an option or if you already have set it
up as IMAP, you need the settings, then on your iPhone setup a new account
and choose Other as the account type. On the next screen you can select to
set it up either as a POP account or IMAP account, make sure you select IMAP
and enter your information.
Garth actually covers setting up an email account on the iPhone in Episode 8
of his demo-casts, but I haven't actually listened to it and don't know how
much detail there is regarding things like POP versus IMAP versus Exchange
Active Sync and so on.

On your computer you would also have to reconfigure your email account and
set it up as IMAP, once again, I can't tell you much as to how to do so
unless I know which email client you are using. Hopefully it will be Outlook
2007, 2010 or 2013 in which case it's easy.

If your provider only allows your account to be configured as a POP account,
then you might want to consider setting up an Outlook.com or gmail account.
I know changing email addresses is a pain in the neck, but in the long run
you will be glad you did since a service like Outlook.com (which used to be
Hotmail/Windows Live) or Gmail offers you much more flexibility also with
respect to Contacts and if you ever switch providers your email will stay
the same, you have it until the day you die and maybe by then your iPhone
may even work in the after-life *smile*.

I personally prefer to use Microsoft's Outlook.com service which would also
give you an outlook.com email address, for example,
chasity.jack...@outlook.com. If you were to sign up for this you would
simply select Hotmail as the account type when you setup your email
account on the iPhone (Apple hasn't caught up yet with the renaming of
Hotmail first to Windows Live and now to Outlook.com). Microsoft uses
Exchange Active Sync as the technology behind their service instead of IMAP
and I like this because it takes care of email, contacts and calendars
whereas if you have a gmail account and use Google Contacts you have to set
up the email account as type Gmail and then setup another so-called CardDAV
account to sync your contacts.

 I am wondering if anyone is using Logos Bible Software effectively with the
 iPhone. I can get the books to show up one pager time with
 library.Logos.com, but would like to be able to read them on the phone
 without being connected to the Internet. Does anyone know if you can get
 logo's books into Voice Dream reader?

Deleting text messages and contacts

Since I bought an iPhone 4, I just activated it on Page Plus which runs 
on the Verizon
network. In attempting to set up a contact, I screwed it up so badly 
that I want
to delete this contact and start over. Please, someone, tell me how to 
do this.


Second, using Skype, I sent a couple of text messages to my iPhone. They 
were received
and read just fine, but I cannot figure out how to delete them. When I 
double tap

on edit, the delete button is dimmed. What am I doing wrong?
My last help request is a question. Does the term buddy message refer 
to a text
message which was sent from a non iPhone sender such as an android phone 
or Skype

or some other type of phone?  Thanks.

I am writing to you directly since while using a screenreader with iTunes is
on topic for the list, I didn't want to start a message war about the merits
of Jaws versus other screenreaders. The fact is that I have never used
another screenreader except just a little bit of System Access to Go when I
am doing something simple on a computer which doesn't have a screenreader
installed.

 

If buying Jaws and spending $200 every 2 years for the SMA which allows you
to always download the latest version is not an issue for you, then I would
say that it is still your best and most advanced option unless you want to
switch to a Mac in which case you get Voiceover included.

 

I love my iPhone, but when it comes to computers I am a Windows and Jaws
person and probably always will be . Jaws is extremely advanced and while it
has its issues, so does everything else. If you only need very basic access
for email, the internet and iTunes then maybe NVDA or System Access will
even do the trick for you and they are either free or relatively
inexpensive. In my opinion they are free for a reason and I just think that
something that is free most likely is not quite as good as something that
costs money which means paid experts are at work to make it better all the
time. That is also the reason why I don't have a problem paying Freedom
Scientific my $200 or $250 every 2 years to renew my SMA which then gives me
access to the next 2 major versions of Jaws. I need this for work and to be
efficient and I don't expect Freedom Scientific to add features and improve
Jaws for free, no business can work for free and pay their employees to do
good work.

 

Yes, Jaws is rather expensive, but the argument that wit Apple you don't
have to pay for a screenreader is only somewhat true. Yes, you don't pay
more as a blind person to buy the computer, but any Apple user pays more for
the computer than you would for a Windows computer. The difference may not
be quite as bit any more, but it still exists and if you pay $500 or $600
more for the hardware then this already covers half or more than half of
what Jaws costs.

 

Anyhow, that is my 2 Cents worth and as I said, had I put this on the list I
would probably have started a huge discussion on how unfair it is that
Freedom Scientific dares to charge all these poor blind people to get the
latest version of their software and so on.

 

Oh, and by the way, with the exception of a few little things Jaws works
very nicely with iTunes and in my book iTunes 11 is absolutely fully
accessible with Jaws 14. Things like redeeming a gift card in iTunes are a
bit challenging, you may have to turn off the virtual cursor, but since it's
so easy to do on the iPhone, I just don't bother doing it on the computer.
The main interface is definitely easy to use and I actually quite like
iTunes. There could maybe be some more shortcuts, for example, it would be
nice if there were a shortcut for activating the iPhone button when your
phone is connected rather than having to tab around to find it, but they are
not huge issues. I think most people who have problems with iTunes just have
not taken the time to learn how to use it. Jonathan's FS Casts go over just
about everything and I guess you could always go to
www.FreedomScientific.com/FSCast and find them if you want to hear a
demonstration on how well this does work.

Jaws is my opinion and my little sarcastic remark later on in the message is
based on the recent hot discussion about Sendero and their pricing as well
as previous messages about the cost of screenreaders and so on. Please let's
not start another arguement about this, if anybody takes exception to

Hi Don,

For your first question on how to delete a contact. You have to double tap
on edit. Then flick right until you hear delete contact. You may have to
play around to get it.

The next question is how to delete text messages. All you have to do is
flick down to the conversation then flick down. It should say delete. If
not, use your roter and turn to actions. You will delete the whole
conversations so be prepared.

The last question is what the term buddy means. It just means the other
party who is talking with you. So you will hear your conversation, then the
buddy is the other person who responds to you.

JAWS, System Access and NVDA are also options. I'm not sure how they'll 
work with your specific examples, but NVDA is free and JAWS has a 40 
minute trial, so you can check both of them out before proceeding.

I use ZoomText 10 and although it is better than past versions, it
is unable to read anything presented in the iTunes Store screens.
That information appears to be graphical as opposed to conventional
text characters so I'm wondering which screen readers are able to

best suited to read this graphically-presented text. I expect we'll

I use Amazon to purchase my music and was disappointed to learn last
night that in order to download those tracks to my computer, their
old mp3 downloader program no longer works and I had to install
their desktop Cloud Player. This Cloud Player almost makes iTunes
seem very accessible. It presents everything graphically except for
the conventional menu accessed by the button at the top left.
ZoomText can't read any of the content so I'm wondering how other
screen readers work in this environment.

Hi Donald,

To delete a Contact:

Go into Contacts
Find the Contact you want to delete and double tap on it
Now find the Edit button at the top right of the screen
Now do a 4-finger tap on the bottom half on the phone, this is the gesture
which takes you to the last screen element which is the Delete Contact
button.

Note: Sometimes the 4-finger tap may stop just short of that, if you are not
on the Delete Contact button just swipe right until you get to it or you
could just swipe right all the way to begin with until you find it. As I
said, if you are in the Contacts app, it will be the very last thing on the
screen once you are in Edit mode.

As far as deleting text messages is concerned, if you are running iOS 6 you
could just use the new method to delete emails, text messages, songs etc. If
you are in the main window of the Messages app just flick down or up with a
single finger and you should hear Voiceover say Delete, now just double
tap anywhere on the screen.
If you don't want to use this gesture, there is a difference whether you
delete an entire conversation or whether you want to delete individual
messages in a conversation.
In order to delete an entire conversation, make sure you are in the main
list of conversations and that you are not in a conversation which will be
the case if you double tap on it.
Find the Edit button in this case it is at the top left of the screen. You
know you are on the right screen if you have the Compose button at the top
right.
Once you double tap on Edit, a Delete switch button appears beside each
conversation.
Double tap on it and you will be asked to confirm, double tap again and the
conversation is gone.
Once you deleted all the conversations you want to delete, double tap on
Done at the top left of the screen. Basically, the Edit button will become
the Done button when you double tap it and when you double tap Done it will
once again turn into Edit.

If you want to only delete individual messages, double tap on the
Conversation so you are on the screen where you can read the individual
messages.

Buddy message, by the way, refers to any message you receive from another
person whether it is an iMessage or regular text message.
If it is an iMessage, your own messages will be identified as Your
iMessage, if it is a text message, it will be Your text message. Any
reply is always Buddy message.

Now you have an Edit button at the top left of the screen (opposite from
where it is when you delete entire conversations).
Now double tap on all the individual messages, both your own and the buddy
messages, you want to delete. Voiceover will say selected before each one
after you double tap it.
Let's say you do this for 5 messages, now check the bottom left of the
screen and you will find Delete, 5 button. Double tap this and those
messages will be deleted from the conversation.
There is also a Clear All button at the top left of the screen after you
double tap on Edit.
This will clear all messages from a conversation, but it will leave the
entry for that person in your Conversations list.

best OCR apps

Hey everyone, regarding OCR apps, what does everyone think are the best ones? 
I'm thinking abbyy text grabber and prismo are the best choices, but thought I 
would ask.

I remember when I got my first IOS device a few years ago, I tried this app, 
was not very accessible at all, sounds like it hasn't changed much. 
Fortunately, you can read logos content using a web browser, that's how I do 
it, and it's much easier.

Could you please report to the group after a few days of playing, to let us 
know if the relabeling of the boxes actually stays. The problem a few of us are 
having is that after several times of play and after aseveral days the labeled 
boxes are no longer labeled.

Hi, this is just a friendly suggestion that sending out several messages
with a single question each is actually better in a list of this type.
This is because there are so many members that some might be interested
in answering question 1, while others are for question 2, and so on. If
you send all the questions in one email, it makes it harder for all
members to read your questions and answer them. Yes, this is a high
traffic list, but it's still better in my opinion to just write a single
question or topic in a new message. Also, while we are on the subject of
subjects, it's not a good idea to reply to an existing message and
hijack the thread into something totally different. So, it's better to
start a new message for something totally different as well.

Hello Jan,
Thank you for actually being interested in the problems the app is causing.
The three finger swipe doesn't work in the training mode or the gaming mode.  I 
do have some vision and the button you mention in the training mode is not 
visible.  Therefore voiceover or no that option is out.  Just in case i'm 
missing something i'll have my husband look at it, he is fully sighted.
Just to repeat the three finger swipe left doesn't work in either mode weather 
you hold the phone in landscape or portrait.
I'm using an iPhone 4s

okay, then the orientation is not the problem. On which device do you play 
MouseKick?


If the three-finger swipe to the left doesn't work at all, there is a 
workaround to leave the training mode: There is, indeed, a back button on the 
screen in the lower left corner of the screen. However, you cannot reach it 
with VoiceOver, since I want to save a blind user from accidentally hitting it. 
The finger swipe should provide the same functionality. If you turn VoiceOver 
off, you can tap the button and leave the training mode. The same button also 
appears in a real game.


However, we have to find out, why the swipe gesture doesn't work, since this is 
the preferred way to quit a game.

mousekick correction

Sorry one correction in training mode while holding the phone in landscape mode 
yes the back button at the bottom left is visible, and if i turn voiceover off 
it works.  Of course though it would be nice not to turn voiceover off and use 
the three finger swipe.  I just thought of something, pausing writing this 
email to test my thought out.

Ok i tried to double tap the screen using my three fingers holding and swiping 
but still no go.

on topic for the list, I didn't want to start a message war about the merits
of Jaws versus other screenreaders. The fact is that I have never used
another screenreader except just a little bit of System Access to Go when I
am doing something simple on a computer which doesn't have a screenreader
installed.



If buying Jaws and spending $200 every 2 years for the SMA which allows you
to always download the latest version is not an issue for you, then I would
say that it is still your best and most advanced option unless you want to
switch to a Mac in which case you get Voiceover included.



I love my iPhone, but when it comes to computers I am a Windows and Jaws
person and probably always will be . Jaws is extremely advanced and while it
has its issues, so does everything else. If you only need very basic access
for email, the internet and iTunes then maybe NVDA or System Access will
even do the trick for you and they are either free or relatively
inexpensive. In my opinion they are free for a reason and I just think that
something that is free most likely is not quite as good as something that
costs money which means paid experts are at work to make it better all the
time. That is also the reason why I don't have a problem paying Freedom
Scientific my $200 or $250 every 2 years to renew my SMA which then gives me
access to the next 2 major versions of Jaws. I need this for work and to be
efficient and I don't expect Freedom Scientific to add features and improve
Jaws for free, no business can work for free and pay their employees to do
good work.



Yes, Jaws is rather expensive, but the argument that wit Apple you don't
have to pay for a screenreader is only somewhat true. Yes, you don't pay
more as a blind person to buy the computer, but any Apple user pays more for
the computer than you would for a Windows computer. The difference may not
be quite as bit any more, but it still exists and if you pay $500 or $600
more for the hardware then this already covers half or more than half of
what Jaws costs.



Anyhow, that is my 2 Cents worth and as I said, had I put this on the list I
would probably have started a huge discussion on how unfair it is that
Freedom Scientific dares to charge all these poor blind people to get the
latest version of their software and so on.



Oh, and by the way, with the exception of a few little things Jaws works
very nicely with iTunes and in my book iTunes 11 is absolutely fully
accessible with Jaws 14. Things like redeeming a gift card in iTunes are a
bit challenging, you may have to turn off the virtual cursor, but since it's
so easy to do on the iPhone, I just don't bother doing it on the computer.
The main interface is definitely easy to use and I actually quite like
iTunes. There could maybe be some more shortcuts, for example, it would be
nice if there were a shortcut for activating the iPhone button when your
phone is connected rather than having to tab around to find it, but they are
not huge issues. I think most people who have problems with iTunes just have
not taken the time to learn how to use it. Jonathan's FS Casts go over just
about everything and I guess you could always go to
www.FreedomScientific.com/FSCast and find them if you want to hear a
demonstration on how well this does work.

I had my son load one of my books yesterday, and the software wouldn't do a 
thing with voiceover. So reading on the web is definitely the way to go with

My subscription button does nothing, absolutely nothing, I just keep seeing
the same screen of settings and I would like to be sure I registered, I was
using a Bluetooth keyboard and hit enter and the screen went away so I am

Using a Timer to open an App on my iPad

Is it possible to set up a timer to run a script to automatically open an app 
on my iPad Mini? I'd like to set it to open up an app, say, every two hours, or 
maybe every four, until I shut it off for the night and start it over in the 
morning. Is this doable?

I rfemember that the fields are available to type in by default. In
other words, I didn't turn on forms mode. Im assuming you're doing
this through the iTunes program. That said, its been a couple of years
since I did this process. you might take a listen to the latest
fscasts on using iTunes with jaws.

Hello, everyone.

I am very fond of the Lire RSS news reader, but because of Feeddler's high 
ratings, I decided to give Feeddler a try.  Unlike Lire, I needed an RSS reader 
account to access feeds via Feedler, and I chose The Old Reader.  It appears to 
be working well, but I'm wondering if anyone sees advantages to using some 
other aggregator.  Which readers do you use with Feeddler and other RSS apps?

I listened to this this morning and it was a great presentation.  

Since when I press the subscription button, which I did get finally to work
and do not see a registration button, can I assume that I registered?  I
know about assumptions but otherwise I do not see how you can register
without the button, since it is not present, I would think I got it despite
the Bluetooth keyboard I was using.

Weather bug Elite Question

Hi,
In recent times it seems that the accessibility and performance of this app 
with Voiceover has been consistently good which is why when I consulted it 
today I was most surprised.  When I launched this app in its latest incarnation 
I.E. the newest release dated June 27, 2013 version 3.1 I noticed that in the 
Now view of weather for a given location the app is not verbalizing any of the 
current  information for things such as temperature humidity sunrise sunset 
wind speed and the like.  If I switch to other views such as details the app 
seems to be verbalizing better.  Has anyone else encountered this or can anyone 
else replicate this?

How about dymo tape braille labels?
I know, that is old school, but it works. 
Otherwise, digitEyes sells labels you can use to record what is in a box 
assuming you don't have a PenFriend or Touch Memo.

No, I hardly ever use this app.  In fact, I regret the purchase.

One weekend, when I first acquired the app, I had sighted assistance in 
beginning to build a library.  We couldn't figure out how to have the app 
recognize similar items.  For example, flavors of the same brand of yogurt.  It 
also didn't seem possible to have the app recognize the different kCups.

:) I guess after the first weekend I kind of gave up on the app and fairly 
quickly alternative apps came out, which I found easier to set up  use.

If anyone has helpful tips  guidance on how to use the app better, maybe I 
wouldn't regret the purchase.

I used index notecards; I brailled the room the box came from, then brailled a 
brief summery of what was inside.  I used the packing tape to firmly secure the 
card in place.

I suggest either using 2 labels for each box, or putting the label on the side 
of the box.  Boxes are generally stacked up high, so it isn't convenient to 
read a label on top.  :)

Since you have Siri in your list of apps, we must be seeing the difference
between a 4 and a 4s or 5. All the apps are listed alphabetically and mine
jumps from Red Laser to WY Pages- absolutely no Tap Tap See there. :(

The path that I stated before should lead you to Location Services. No you
shouldn't have to have the app Tap Tap See open to find Location Services
for the app. Yes, Red Laser and All Access need Location Services turned on,
so that you are able to gather info from your general area. Photos and
camera doesn't necessarily need Location Services turned on. All this does
if Location Services are turned on for Photos and camera is to stamp your
coordinance on the photos info. If this info is presented to the general
public and if the photo happends to have been taken in or around your house,
your address can be obtained.

 

Here is the instructions to get you to Location Services once again..

 

From the Home screen of your device Go To

 

Settings and double tap to open.

Swipe down to Privacy

Swipe to Location Services this should be the first in the list. You
should hear Voiceover read Location Services ON -Button-

Double tap to open Location Services and then Swipe down until you hear Tap
Tap See.

All Access, Red Laser, Maps, and any other apps that you may be using that
would require your location to give you the best possible info and results. 

 

Not all of the apps listed will necessarily need Location Services turned
on. This will depend on how frequently you use the app. For example, I have
Location Services turned OFF for Seri, because I have disabled Seri because
I refuse to use the comedian! But I have Location Services turned ON for
TuneIn Radio, so that I am able to gather info on my local radio stations.

to show up, but IT'S still not there. Should it be there regardless of

'dimmed'- but don't exactly know what that really means.

 The path that I stated before should lead you to Location Services. No you
shouldn't have to have the app Tap Tap See open to find Location Services
for the app. Yes, Red Laser and All Access need Location Services turned on,
so that you are able to gather info from your general area. Photos and
camera doesn't necessarily need Location Services turned on. All this does
if Location Services are turned on for Photos and camera is to stamp your
coordinance on the photos info. If this info is presented to the general
public and if the photo happends to have been taken in or around your house,
your address can be obtained.
 
 Here is the instructions to get you to Location Services once again..
 
 From the Home screen of your device Go To
 
 Settings and double tap to open.
 Swipe down to Privacy
 Swipe to Location Services this should be the first in the list. You 
 should hear Voiceover read Location Services ON -Button- Double tap to
open Location Services and then Swipe down until you hear Tap Tap See.

If you receive or make a phone call while The Seeing Eye GPS(tm) is running, 
you need to tap on it again after the call is over. If you had a route running, 
it should pick up again where you are now located after 10 seconds or so 
depending on the position acquisition.

Subscription with Sendero GPS

There is a known bug as far as the subscriptions are concerned with the 
Sendero GPS app unless you have the iPhone 5
There is an issue on all devices except the iPhone 5, that the subscription 
button is not fully visible on the screen even though Voice Over can see 
part
of it, you must use 3 fingers to swipe up to reveal the full setting page 2 
of 2, at which point you can then double tap on the Subscription button to
see your subscription.


If you think education is difficult, try being stupid !

noticed even though voiceover reports me in the message body, my
message winds up tied into the subject field. To use a technical term,
I have to manoogle it a little bit.

Hi there. I recommend that you do a Google search for Lifehacker and electronic 
document signing. They will give you a list of the top five apps which can be 
used for signing so that you don't have to print a document, scan it, and then 
email it or fax it. Docusign Ink. is very voiceover friendly, however placing 
your signature on the right part of the document you need to sign is something 
that I do not believe a totally blind person can do. This requires that you 
maneuver your signature to the right part of the document that you upload. Then 
you send the document to the person who needs to receive the signed document. I 
recently have had to sign several documents and got sighted assistance with one 
of them using this app. The app itself is voiceover friendly as I mentioned, 
but moving the signature to the right part was where I required assistance. 
Easysign Was another app I looked at, but I didn't care to try it because you 
only got three free signatures. Then you had to purchase additional signature 
capability. The first app I mentioned seems to be the best one even though it 
has pro features. Good luck.

question abbout stem stumper

To anyone out there who plays Stem Stumper:  When I get to level 7
everything including voice over stops.  No music, no speech, just the bonk
that shows the end of the screen.  Is there something I need to do?  Just
wondering.  Haven't played the game since the last update.

I have used Apple Maps with great success when I had Edge.  It worked every

Apple Maps will have turn by turn walking directions in iOS 7.  I
wonder how the Seeing Eye app will be really different from that
experience.  Chicago has loads of one-way streets so turn by turn
driving directions have limited value.

I would very much like a short paid subscription.  Apple Maps does not
work in EDGE service.  I would like to try the Seeing Eye ap to find
out how it preforms in EDGE conditions.  The fact that maps are
through the Internet and not my device is a bummer.  No cell phone
carrier is available everywhere. However, a talking map can be
indispensable and should be available at all times like Navigon.

Mike May described his difficulty in developing both a high quality
accessible GPS ap that was affordable in the March CSUN presentation.
I would like a monthly subscription to understand how the app works
under EDGE conditions. Those seeking a free or low cost solution are
really advocating for a socialist society.  I essentially live in one
and life in this leftist paradise is not the utopia that many claim it
to be.

trees, can you image how surprised you'll be when you unpack it all... like
Christmas in July just better *smile*

OK, seriously, I would either use braille labels of some sort as well or do
Digit-Eyes barcode labels. I guess it all depends on how much detail you
want, e.g. would you be happy with Living Room 1, Living room 2 etc. or
would you want information about the room it came from along with a detailed
inventory of what is in the box. If you want really detailed information a
barcode label might be best since you can use Digit-eyes to record a
description.
