Re: Braille Pen

2014-04-05 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi there. Here is what I do when I have contracted braille on and I want to
write an email address. I write out the address before the at sign. Then I
press dot 4 by itself and wait. Then I typed the domain name followed by dots
256 then I pause. Then I typed the last part of the domain. Basically when you
type the at or the period, you have to wait for the translator to finish.

Simple! One end is a plug, the other end is a jack. You just push the plug

I'm trying to advise a friend who just got a Mophie Juice Pack Helium
battery/case for her iPhone 5. I know this comes with a 2 to 3 inch cable that
Mophie calls a pass-through headphone adapter. I think this provides access to
the headphone jack which is otherwise unavailable when the phone is plugged
into the case. I could not find any instructions in the user guide on how to
connect this pass-through cable and my friend is having trouble getting it
connected and doesn't want to force anything.

If anyone using this item with an iPhone 5 can provide specific instructions on
how to connect it, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

These are a common item however, you only get what you pay fore. Some can
protect your device, some do a better job and some offer no protection at
all. My wife bought me a good one made by Apple for devices. This one has
a lightning connector at the end of a coiled cord ending in a USB plug.
They give you another adaptor that plugs in the 12-V power out jack on cars.
It has 2 USB ports. These 2 peaces plug together or can be used separate.
They are made very good. The cable with the lightning connector can also
plug into a USB port on a computer and charge an iPhone. When it comes to
your device, don't go the cheap rout. It may cost you your device.

  Hello list,

Hopefully someone can enlighten me on this. Can a Verizon iPad/iPad Mini work
on GSM Networks? I.E. T-Mobile or AT&T or any of the MVNOs using their
networks?

I recall reading somewhere that only the Sprint (CDMA) iPad wouldn't work on
GSM, but am not sure if I have my facts right. If so, would data speeds be
limited as far as 2g or 3g, etc?

  Thanks,

Yes, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and excel for iPad work on the iPad mini.
They are three separate programs to download.

Mobile was RE: Does Microsoft Office Run on the iPhone and iPod?

There has been some confusion which I may have contributed to, but also if
folks would be careful to use real app names, things would not get quite as
confused.

The app I've been talking about is "Microsoft Office Mobile" which is free and
is free for home use. It works with OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) and only
Office 2007 and above documents that have the "x" at the end of the file
extension, like ".docx" or "xlsx", etc.

Microsoft also released "Microsoft Word for iPad" which requires an Office
365 subscription if you want to edit documents.
It is only for the iPad.
Apparently, it will also edit older .doc files.

I do not have an iPad or an Office 365 account so am hoping that Microsoft will
make the "Microsoft Office Mobile" app which works on the iPhone, iPod Touch
and iPad, fully accessible with VoiceOver.
My sighted wife can edit documents quite easily with it and VoiceOver will read
the documents, but you can't edit them with VoiceOver.

Richard

The volume of voice-over through the speaker may have been turned down. When on
a screen with a fair amount for voice over to read, remove the headset, perform
a two finger flick up, and press the up volume button repeatedly.

Hi, Raul. The dot patterns are 46 and 256 What I'm trying to do is write an

translation is US and I've tried with contractions on and off.

Differences between Microsoft Word for Ipad and Microsoft Office Mobile was RE: Does Microsoft Office Run on the iPhone and iPod?

2014-04-05 Thread Richard Turner
There has been some confusion which I may have contributed to, but also if
folks would be careful to use real app names, things would not get quite as
confused.

The app I've been talking about is "Microsoft Office Mobile" which is free
and is free for home use. It works with OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) and
only Office 2007 and above documents that have the "x" at the end of the
file extension, like ".docx" or "xlsx", etc.

Microsoft also released "Microsoft Word for iPad" which requires an Office
365 subscription if you want to edit documents.
It is only for the iPad.
Apparently, it will also edit older .doc files.

I do not have an iPad or an Office 365 account so am hoping that Microsoft
will make the "Microsoft Office Mobile" app which works on the iPhone, iPod
Touch and iPad, fully accessible with VoiceOver.
My sighted wife can edit documents quite easily with it and VoiceOver will
read the documents, but you can't edit them with VoiceOver.

Richard

Re: Does Microsoft Office Run on the iPhone and iPod?

2014-04-05 Thread Nimit
Hi, all,
OK! I feel like I created the little confusion so I am here to support my
opinion with some resources. It is true that there are several apps for the
iPad, word, powerpoint, and excell. I have pasted links for everything in the
bottom of my message as soon as I finish writing what I have to say. I am
talking about the Microsoft Word app for iPad. In addition, I have pasted the
link for the podcast from the Flying Blind weekly news letter email. I agree
that it does not announce style but with the Microsoft 365 subscription, you
can read and edit. Without the subscription, you can only read. I have not
bought the subscription, but have seen in use in the podcast and in person off
of somebody whom I know. Now, here are the links that I brought. I have the
links for each app for the iPad separately and the link for the podcast. It is
almost like apple iSweet which includes Pages, keynote and numbers. So, here
it is.

Podcast:

Microsoft Word app for the iPad:

Microsoft Powerpoint app for iPad:

Microsoft Excell for iPad:

Hope that helps,

First, right now, the mobile app does not work for editing or creating

If you want to read files you have created you will need a free Microsoft
account and access to the "OneDrive" cloud service. I believe the
assumption is that you have Microsoft Office on a computer that you have
created your .docx files that can be stored on the OneDrive cloud service.

I do not know if you create a Microsoft account, if that automatically
gives you a OneDrive account and the 7GB of storage that comes with it.

But, like I say, right now, unless you already have Microsoft documents
you just want to be able to read on your iPhone, it is not much use to
 VoiceOver users.

Re: Does Microsoft Office Run on the iPhone and iPod?

2014-04-05 Thread Deb Lewis
You must have an Office 365 subscription It's $9.95 a month I think. gives you
a couple of computers and a tablet access for that price.
And it's quite accessible once you do. My frustration though is that VO doesn't
read any style information like headings. But you can both read and edit if you
have a subscription. I've only done this on the iPad. Don't know if the IPhone
apps are accessible as well. It's not the same app so that's why I'm mentioning
this, they're often not equal.

DropVox Recording That Did Not Make It To DropBox

2014-04-05 Thread Terrie Terlau
Hello everyone,

I have DropVox connected to DropBox and have successfully gotten recordings
from DropVox to DropBox in the past. Approximately 10 days ago, I made a
recording with DropVox, got the message it was uploading to DropBox, and it
has not shown up yet. I thought perhaps Dropbox was too full, so I deleted a
number of items. I still can't find it in DropBox. The DropVox folder in
DropBox is still empty.

I can't figure out how to look for it in DropVox on my phone in case it is
still hanging out in the DropVox app somewhere. I hope I haven't lost it
forever. Can anyone give me some tips for trying to locate the recording if
it is still on the iPhone? I don't know the name that DropVox used for the
recording. I don't remember the precise date when I made the recording,
though I can get within three days or so. If DropVox uses dates as file
names, can anyone tell me the format it uses so I can search the phone?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Terrie Terlau

I believe I heard the same podcast. If so, on the iPad, there are actually
several apps not one. The app for Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are separate
apps. It is not one app. If it works as well as it appeared to lin the demo,
it might motivate me to get an iPad. Being able to do that in the field would

I looked in the support/help info on the app and as I was suspecting, you
can call the same Microsoft Accessibility support phone number that you can
now call for any issues with Microsoft software if you are using any

Could you send me the link to that podcast?
I don't think editing works with VoiceOver.

For home use, you do not need a subscription, it is free.

I hope we are talking about the same app, Microsoft Office Mobile.

I can't varify this personally, but I've heard and read around on the net
that if the iPad has a sim slot it can work in spite of what some carriers

Subject: Verizon iPad with GSM network

Hello list,

Hopefully someone can enlighten me on this. Can a Verizon iPad/iPad Mini
work on GSM Networks?

Thanks,

Microsoft Office Mobile and Microsoft Accessibility support

2014-04-05 Thread Richard Turner
I called Microsoft accessibility about the problems with editing documents
on the iPhone with VoiceOver in the new Office Mobile app.

They don't know much about this.

If you call, they will give you a link to a survey to give feedback.

For those who don't want to wait for a long time on hold just to be given a
survey link, I will paste it below.

It is completely accessible and won't take long to fill out.

The more feedback they get, the sooner they might fix it.

RE: Does Microsoft Office Run on the iPhone and iPod?

2014-04-05 Thread Richard Turner
First, right now, the mobile app does not work for editing or creating
documents with VoiceOver.
If you want to read files you have created you will need a free Microsoft
account and access to the "OneDrive" cloud service. I believe the assumption
is that you have Microsoft Office on a computer that you have created your
.docx files that can be stored on the OneDrive cloud service.

I do not know if you create a Microsoft account, if that automatically gives
you a OneDrive account and the 7GB of storage that comes with it.

But, like I say, right now, unless you already have Microsoft documents you
just want to be able to read on your iPhone, it is not much use to VoiceOver
users.

Re: question about spanish vocabulary app that was recommended here

2014-04-05 Thread RobH.
Ok, thanks ever so. On to 3rd section now, text input seems to be the next
issue as one has to use the real accented characters to get the answers
right. Seems obvious I suppose, but haven't got them available when I type.

E'acute, U'acute and N'tilder or something so far.

Any thoughts?

I locked up when hitting the button to actually say something too. I mean,
the device went silent and did nothing; got it back when I killed the app.

so still a little frustrated with it, but it is good brain fodder.

Thanks, RobH.

Rebecca, I think it's just a reinforcement to have you do it twice. If
you get it wrong, it will make you keep doing it till you get it right
twice.
Rob, the Duolingo doesn't reallly give instruction. You learn by
making mistakes. I've got some books I downloaded from Bookshare and
BARD, if I need deeper explanations. I connect my braille notetaker
when I use it because I'm more of a tactile learner.

Re: MLB at bat issue

2014-04-05 Thread Peter Logan
One thing you can try is switching to the alternative feeds ... I was having
this issue and switched to the shout cast alternative .. and that fixed the
problem ...
To do this .. from the game day audio screen .. click on the help button ..
then try one of the other feeds .. hope this helps ...

Hi Eric and all,

I looked in the support/help info on the app and as I was suspecting, you
can call the same Microsoft Accessibility support phone number that you can
now call for any issues with Microsoft software if you are using any
adaptive software/hardware, which I will do later this morning.

The number is:

Hours are 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Friday and 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Saturday and Sunday.

I found them very helpful when I ran into a problem shortly after getting my
Windows 8.1 laptop.

I think I will call Microsoft Accessibility tomorrow and ask them who to

If you read the entire description of the editing features in the app, this
looks great if they will only include voiceOver support.

I just read the end of the information in the app description, and it says:

"* Sign in with a free Microsoft account to create, edit and save documents

So, a free Microsoft account is all that is needed for home use. If you
have a business, then Office 365 subscription is required.

Here is what it says about that:

"use. A qualifying Office 365 subscription is required to create, edit and
save documents

for business use. Qualifying plans include:

.Office 365 Small Business Premium

.Office 365 Midsize Business

.Office 365 Enterprise E3 and E4 (Enterprise and Government)

.Office 365 Education A3 and A4

.Office 365 ProPlus"

I think I will call Microsoft Accessibility tomorrow and ask them who to
contact about accessibility for their app.

If you read the entire description of the editing features in the app, this
looks great if they will only include voiceOver support.

Hi Ric and others,

Sorry I am so late returning to this thread. List Recorder is definitely
still being developed and supported. for the app to continue to improve I
think we simply need to let the developer know what the most important
features we want are. I know that she was looking into both Dropbox and
iCloud as possible areas of improvement or additions.

She can be contacted through the app for support or ideas. Her commitment
to the app and the population it is designed for is rock solid. The app
continues to improve due to user input and support.
I support the app as a volunteer because I rely on it for my work and
personal productivity. It is available in many languages thanks to volunteer
translators. It is a quality professional recording and note taking app
that is truly driven by user feedback and a respectful drive to make a
valuable app for the visually impaired.

I have summarized and shared the feedback from this thread. Don't hesitate
to email the developer with feedback and feature requests. The fact that
people are relying on this app matters to this developer and the team of
volunteers.

RE: Microsoft office on iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch

2014-04-05 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Eric and all,

I looked in the support/help info on the app and as I was suspecting, you
can call the same Microsoft Accessibility support phone number that you can
now call for any issues with Microsoft software if you are using any
adaptive software/hardware, which I will do later this morning.

The number is:

800-936-5900

Hours are 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Friday and 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Saturday and Sunday.

I found them very helpful when I ran into a problem shortly after getting my
Windows 8.1 laptop.

So, a free Microsoft account is all that is needed for home use. If you
have a business, then Office 365 subscription is required.

Here is what it says about that:

"use. A qualifying Office 365 subscription is required to create, edit and

.Office 365 Small Business Premium

.Office 365 Midsize Business

.Office 365 Enterprise E3 and E4 (Enterprise and Government)

.Office 365 Education A3 and A4

.Office 365 ProPlus"

I think I will call Microsoft Accessibility tomorrow and ask them who to
contact about accessibility for their app.

If you read the entire description of the editing features in the app, this
looks great if they will only include voiceOver support.

I also don't have Dropbox listed under Settings, Privacy, Location Services,
it simply is not in the list and I am very sure about this as I swiped
through it from top to bottom and back twice. When I opened Dropbox it asked
me if I wanted Push notifications and I do also have it in Background App
Refresh, but it's definitely not in Location Services. Why some people have
it and other's don't I am not sure, but I am thinking that maybe it has to
do with what other apps have access to Dropbox?

Re: battery life in ios7.1

2014-04-05 Thread Michael Feir
One thing I was unknowingly losing battery life to was Bluetooth.
After I updated to 7.1, it turned on Bluetooth which I have off most
of the time. Once I discovered that and shut it off again, my battery
life improved markedly. I have background app refresh turned off. So
far, I've been pretty happy with my battery life on my new 5S.

Hi there. I wonder what would happen if instead you disable the

causing the battery drain. Dropbox has a feature where depending on
what your location is, it will do certain things or synchronize

Rebecca, I think it's just a reinforcement to have you do it twice. If

RE: Connecting iPhone to my new windows7 computer

2014-04-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Simon,

You really have to be more specific. Finding the tabs like Summary, Info,
Apps, Music etc. are not menus. Which version of iTunes did you use before?
I assume it was on Windows XP?

I suggest you describe exactly what happens when you plug in your iPhone,
e.g. do you hear the USB connect sound and, if you have a picture on your
camera roll, can you access it via Windows Explorer? If so that means your
iPhone is recognized and there is no reason why you shouldn't find the
"iPhone" button in iTunes and, after you activate it, you should be able to
tab to all the different tabs/radio buttons for managing your phone.

RE: Opinions sought.

2014-04-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Del,

As others said, you should contact the seller unless of course it was a
non-authorized seller maybe on eBay, but if this is only 3 or 4 months old
it should be covered under warranty, once again, unless of course you
dropped it in the toilet, stepped on it or something else that was clearly
user-caused damage. I have a Jabra Supreme and it has many of the same
features in terms of announcing who is calling, voice answer etc., but if I
were to buy another headset now I would probably try the Voyager Legend
because of its good reviews.

Hi to those of you with the Voyager Legend headset.

As some of you may remember, I purchased one of these before Christmas. but
soon after it promptly bit the dust.

So my question is: do those of you who have one think its worth purchasing
another, hopefully from a better batch, or should I go for something
different.

All opinions welcome.

Best regards.

Re: question about spanish vocabulary app that was recommended here

2014-04-05 Thread RobH.
I got the DuoLingo, still on the 2nd exercise of level 1!

i'm sure it cheats sometimes, says wrong when I tapped all the right things
in the right order. Never any instructions beyond the current question.
Guess you have to guess and lose a heart to find out; then remember. I've
re-started that exercise 3 times already, ran out at 13 of 15. Goals seem
pointless at this level or rate of progress.
How do you keep VO quiet while listening to the spoken examples? The
quality is mixed and varied, so still not found a definitive pronunciation
of some of the words, all be they so few so far.

Any help appreciated.

RobH.

Hi lisa. I got it. Yep am working on the first level with vo no
problem. I notice that you have to do each word twice. I'll have to
check out the other apps you mentioned too.
