RE: Weird Beeping Problem

2014-06-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Tamara,

First of all, are you and your sister using the same charger? Also, is this
an original Apple charger and cable or are any of the components from a
third party?

Subject: Weird Beeping Problem

Hi All:

I have a weird problem with my iPad Mini and I've just noticed that my
sister's iPod does it as well. The problem is that once the units are
charged, they start beeping once a second. It's unclear what's causing it.
But it stops when the charger is unplugged. I've reset the unit, removed
all apps from the app switcher, and checked under settings for anything that
would cause this. I can't get it to stop. It's annoying and drains the
battery. Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to stop it? Any
help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tamara

RE: iTunes help needed

2014-06-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hi Lori,

You've been receiving some excellent advice on this thread.

Did you ever get iTunes to open again?

To me, there are several questions that need to be answered in order to get
you back up and running.

1.
What version of Windows are you using?

2.
Which screen reader, if any, are you using?

3.
Do you have any residual vision that you can use to see if iTunes is or is
not launching?

4.
How old is your computer?

5.
Is your computer connected to the Internet via a cable or via Wifi?

6.
Have you subscribed to any podcast via iTunes on your computer?

I realize that some of my questions may not exactly make sense to some but,
as a person who has been dealing with iTunes for Windows since early 2008, I
can tell you that they are relevant.

Sometimes, iTunes for Windows doesn't play nicely with the video drivers,
for example. As a result, the program can actually be launching but you
cannot see or act upon it via a screen reader.

I strongly urge you not to restore your Windows computer to an earlier
version if iTunes is the only program giving you problems.

Please keep in mind that if iTunes does not properly shut down, it can lock
the necessary files causing launch problems. Even a system reboot can,
sometimes, not solve this.

Based on what you've posted so far, I am not convinced this is the case.

However, if you want, you can uninstall iTunes and all its related
components from the Add/Remove control panel in Windows, if memory serves
there are 5 components, and then reinstall iTunes from scratch. To get the
latest version of iTunes for Windows, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes

Caution, if you have never uninstalled a program from your computer, be
very, very careful.

When it's all said and done, you want to be prompted with the Import Dialog
Box when you insert a CD, right? There are several ways to get this to
happen but you must understand that it is quite possible that you
inadvertently turned this feature off. You can turn it back on but you must
do so in either the iTunes preferences area or in the Windows Explorer area.
Also, it is possible that iTunes is automatically importing your CDs.

Lori, if some of this seems overwhelming, you might consider getting some
one-on-one assistance, in person.

Understand that, while iTunes for Windows and iTunes for OSX may look
similar, they are, in fact, very, very different applications in terms of
stability and how they perform with access software. I say this so that you
will not blame yourself for the problems you have encountered.

Depending upon various factors, it can take iTunes for Windows up to twenty
or more minutes to launch on certain computers with certain iTunes and
system configurations. It just depends. This is most likely not your
situation but it is possible.

It took me almost two months, way back then, to stop cursing iTunes
everytime I opened it on my Windows computer back in 2008 (smile).

Conversely, iTunes for the Mac is as sweet as Tupelo honey, Honey.

I wish you all the best.

Mark

I tried shutting down my computer and restarting my computer to see if  that
would work so that I could open iTunesbut it didn't work and I still can't

Any other suggestions and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

IOS8 Beta

2014-06-23 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Hi,

Just a quick query, if you have tested the beta, is it possible to set up
groups in your contacts e.g. a group called joke friends and add contacts to it
so that you can bulk send messages?
As far as I am aware, you need an app to do this on IOS7.

Alan,

What is it you can't do from your ATT 5S? If you refer to calling from an open
text message then that is possible as it has nothing to do with your carrier or
phone model.

At the top right of the screen when you are in a conversation is a button, I
believe it is called Contact. If you double tap it 3 little buttons appear
underneath, one of them is More Info and it opens that contact, one is Call and
I can't recall what the other one is because I am running the iOS 8 Beta now
and here the button at the top right is called Details and it brings up a menu
of options which are different due to the added features in iOS 8.

The 3 buttons are a bit hard to find, after you double tap on Contact at the
top right I think it turns into a Done button and if you move your finger down
just a bit you will find the More Info button, then you can swipe left to the
other 2 buttons.

Hi,
The situation i'm talking about here is like this: As i understand it, Google
maps should be able to give you turn-by-turn instructions, right? So i plan a
route with the help of Blindsquare and send it to Google maps which then gives
me a screen where i among other things can choose what route mode i will use,
walking, biking, i think and by car etc so i choose walking and start the
navigation and all Google maps says is drive west or maybe drive north or
the like, no in so and so meters turn left into X street or something. Maybe
it's not even in the app, but i got the impression it was. There is no option
to control the voice guidance at all. Maybe it, like Siri and other useful
functionality simply isn't available in Sweden, who knows, all i know is i
can't get any instructions whatsoever from Google Maps.

I've reset the unit, removed
all apps from the app switcher, and checked under settings for anything
 that
would cause this. I can't get it to stop. It's annoying and drains the
battery. Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to stop it?
 Any
 help is greatly appreciated.

 Thanks,

 Tamara

RE: Exploring a future destination

2014-06-23 Thread DJ
Unfortunately with the built-in voice guidance, you are getting all it's
going to give you. It's generally up to us, the users, to figure out that
when it says to turn left at a certain street in 100 feet, where to turn
left. If we get it wrong, the app updates or we turn around.

Hi,
The situation i'm talking about here is like this: As i understand it,
Google maps should be able to give you turn-by-turn instructions, right? So
i plan a route with the help of Blindsquare and send it to Google maps which
then gives me a screen where i among other things can choose what route mode
i will use, walking, biking, i think and by car etc so i choose walking and
start the navigation and all Google maps says is drive west or maybe
drive north or the like, no in so and so meters turn left into X street
or something. Maybe it's not even in the app, but i got the impression it
was. There is no option to control the voice guidance at all. Maybe it, like
Siri and other useful functionality simply isn't available in Sweden, who
knows, all i know is i can't get any instructions whatsoever from Google
Maps.

Hey, Alan, et al,

I think I saw those same keyboards for the Minis as well. My thought is that
in that case, the only difference between the two iPads is screen size,
which I don't care about, since I have no sight. They are about $100 US
different in price. They have the same chip, right? Of course, the keyboards
for each might be different. I could see the iPad Air having a full

Is there a facebook app that will show the entire screen

2014-06-23 Thread Jen Colley
Hi,
I have an iPad mini. I also have the native facebook app installed.
The trouble I have is I cannot see the whole screen so I can’t see chat or a
few other things unless I rotait the screen and in doing this with voice over,
it makes things not work out so well for me so I keep the screen orientation
locked in the vertical position.
I also when you get in to the news feed area I see news feed but there is no
most recent or new stories so things are shown in order like on the iPhone.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make using the facebook app on the
iPad mini easier and more enjoyable like it is on the phone.

RE: iTunes help needed

2014-06-23 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Sometimes when I open iTunes, I've been told there's a dialog box of some sort
that is silent to JAWS. I've learned to just hit Escape a few times after
starting iTunes, and I've had fewer such problems. And, at times, there's a
Dropbox Photo Transfer dialog that creeps in at times, and this is superimposed
over iTunes.

Subject: RE: iTunes help needed

Hi Lori,

You've been receiving some excellent advice on this thread.

Did you ever get iTunes to open again?

To me, there are several questions that need to be answered in order to get you
back up and running.

1.
What version of Windows are you using?

2.
Which screen reader, if any, are you using?

3.
Do you have any residual vision that you can use to see if iTunes is or is not
launching?

4.
How old is your computer?

5.
Is your computer connected to the Internet via a cable or via Wifi?

6.
Have you subscribed to any podcast via iTunes on your computer?

I realize that some of my questions may not exactly make sense to some but, as
a person who has been dealing with iTunes for Windows since early 2008, I can
tell you that they are relevant.

Sometimes, iTunes for Windows doesn't play nicely with the video drivers, for
example. As a result, the program can actually be launching but you cannot see
or act upon it via a screen reader.

I strongly urge you not to restore your Windows computer to an earlier version
if iTunes is the only program giving you problems.

Please keep in mind that if iTunes does not properly shut down, it can lock the
necessary files causing launch problems. Even a system reboot can, sometimes,
not solve this.

Based on what you've posted so far, I am not convinced this is the case.

However, if you want, you can uninstall iTunes and all its related components
from the Add/Remove control panel in Windows, if memory serves there are 5
components, and then reinstall iTunes from scratch. To get the latest version
of iTunes for Windows, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes

Caution, if you have never uninstalled a program from your computer, be very,
very careful.

When it's all said and done, you want to be prompted with the Import Dialog Box
when you insert a CD, right? There are several ways to get this to happen but
you must understand that it is quite possible that you inadvertently turned
this feature off. You can turn it back on but you must do so in either the
iTunes preferences area or in the Windows Explorer area.
Also, it is possible that iTunes is automatically importing your CDs.

Lori, if some of this seems overwhelming, you might consider getting some
one-on-one assistance, in person.

Understand that, while iTunes for Windows and iTunes for OSX may look similar,
they are, in fact, very, very different applications in terms of stability and
how they perform with access software. I say this so that you will not blame
yourself for the problems you have encountered.

Depending upon various factors, it can take iTunes for Windows up to twenty or
more minutes to launch on certain computers with certain iTunes and system
configurations. It just depends. This is most likely not your situation but
it is possible.

It took me almost two months, way back then, to stop cursing iTunes everytime I
opened it on my Windows computer back in 2008 (smile).

Conversely, iTunes for the Mac is as sweet as Tupelo honey, Honey.

I wish you all the best.

Mark

 Hey, Alan, et al,

I think I saw those same keyboards for the Minis as well. My thought is that
in that case, the only difference between the two iPads is screen size, which
I don't care about, since I have no sight. They are about $100 US different
in price. They have the same chip, right? Of course, the keyboards for each
might be different. I could see the iPad Air having a full keyboard.

Hey, Alan, et al,

I think I saw those same keyboards for the Minis as well. My thought is that in
that case, the only difference between the two iPads is screen size, which I
don't care about, since I have no sight. They are about $100 US different in
price. They have the same chip, right? Of course, the keyboards for each might
be different. I could see the iPad Air having a full keyboard.

I'm trying to help someone who has forgotten their Apple ID password for an
account that has never been used. I'm thinking they should just start fresh
with a new Apple ID account but I'm wondering what will happen if they do
that and use the same email address as the user name as was previously used
on the account with the forgotten password. I'm pretty sure a new account
will be kicked out if the email address is identical.

Does anyone have experience with requesting a forgotten password on an Apple

easiest way to get this resolved will be greatly appreciated.

otterbox Case

2014-06-23 Thread Tristan
I've been extremely hesitant to purchase a new Otterbox case, simply
do to the bulk factor. I used one pretty regularly with my iPhone 5,
but ever since I got my iPhone 5s I've been using a tempered glass
screen protector. Couple with the illuminum/stainless steel shell of
the iPhone itself, it's offered enough protection for my day to day
activities without risk of extreme damage.
The new Otterbox case that's being advertised has caught my attention,
though. If anyone hasn't seen it it's called the Otterbox Resurgence,
and it has a 2,000 MA battery in the back. I've always been inclined
toward using external battery packs or the Mophie Juice Pack cases,
since I tried them earlier this year.
However, the protection and power that the Otterbox Resurgence
provides seems like it would be a smart upgrade as I go out and travel
more without outlets. Does anyone have experience with using a glass
screen protector beneath the clear plastic built-in one that Otterbox
cases have? Is it a requirement to 'cut' the plastic screen protector
out of the case to use it, or will it still fit (the glass layer is
extremely thin).

 Hello!

I just released version 2.2, it should be found on App Store soon.

 *Release Notes:*
 - NEW: You can now operate BlindSquare using a bluetooth keyboard, a
notetaker or a Braille display supporting text input. Type a question mark
to see a list of all possible commands. To read the help about a specific
command, type it followed by a question mark.
 - NEW: Plan A Route now supports multiple versions of Navigon installed on
 one device.
 - NEW: When you are in a list of places, you can now double-tap and hold
 on
a place to open a quick access menu that lets you track the place, plan a
route, show it on the map, and simulate it.
 - NEW: BlindSquare now uses GPS and your direction of movement to detect
how your phone is positioned. This means it is no longer necessary to
 carry
your device with its back pointing in the direction you are traveling.
 - NEW: BlindSquare now uses a better database of intersections for the US;
this should make intersection information more reliable.
 - CHANGE: When sharing a place, you can now edit its name and address.
 - CHANGE: The subcategories listed in Category Searches are now listed
 alphabetically.
 - FIX: The Current Location function in the Audio Menu now also works when
the Current Location function has been disabled in the shake settings.
 - FIX: A bug where simulation would not always start immediately has been
 resolved.

Johanna did a podcast demonstrating how you can use a bluetooth keyboard:

Re: iTunes help needed

2014-06-23 Thread Lori Dent

Hi Mark,

Yes, I know I have been getting some excellant advice. No, I haven't been
able to open up iTunes yet. I tried for most of the day and evening
yesterday to get iTunes to open up but with no luck.

I can't believe that after successfully importing 2 out of 3 of my CD's to
iTunes and then doing the necessary steps to sync my CD's to my iPhone that
I would have problems doing the third CD. I thought I was doing good by
successfully importing 2 of my CD's to iTunes and then on to my phone on my
own.

But this third and final CD and iTunes have been challenging and very
frustrating for me.

I will post my answers under each of your questions.

1. What version of windows are you using?
I'm using windows xp.

2. Which screen reader, if any are you using?
I'm using Jaws.

3. Do you have any residual vision that you can use to see if iTunes is or
is

not launching?

Yes, I have a little bit ofvision to where I can see if iTunes is launching
or not.
4. How old is your computer?

My computer is old. I don't know how old because I got this computer from a
friend.

5.

Is your computer connected to the Internet via a cable or via Wifi?

by WiFi.

If you have anymore questions to ask me don't hesitate to email me. Take
care.

It's gone up incrementally in the last year or two, and this is the new price.

 - NEW: BlindSquare now uses a better database of intersections for the US;
this should make intersection information more reliable.
 - FIX: A bug where simulation would not always start immediately has been
 resolved.

RE: Confusion over syncing outlook contacts

2014-06-23 Thread Don Cher
Finally figured it out- Had downloaded iCloud control panel but did not
continue with set-up when notified that WIFI was required. Now that I have
an upgraded data plan, I can do this over cellular. It did sync my contacts-
but unfortunately not just the ones for my phone but all other Outlook
groups also. Had trouble with JAWS and the control panel. Is it more
accessible to go to iCloud to change sync settings?

You know, at one time, I was following this thread but it got so long that I
completely forgot the original question.

Regardless, I can confirm one thing; that being that I am using Windows 7
running Outlook 2007 with the Apple iCloud Control panel working perfectly.

On a different computer, I am running Windows 8.1 with Outlook 2010 with the
iCloud control panel installed and it, too, works just fine.

When I add, edit, or delete any Reminders, Contacts, Notes, or Appointments
on any iCloud enabled device, including copies of Outlook on either Windows
7 or 8 they are, what seem to be , instantly synced across all my devices.
I do not use either WiFi sync or iTunes for this purpose.

Hi Cher, in terms of your contacts/calendars/reminders, iCloud is simply the
central repository for your data. The idea is to store your data in the
cloud then sync it to any devices that you want, such as to an iPhone, an
iPad, and perhaps Outlook on a PC. You can also collaborate with other
people by having, say, a shared calendar that everyone in your family can
add to or change whenever they want, and the results are pushed to
everyone's devices. It's a way to sync your data from device to device
without having to think about it or connect any wires. It has nothing to do
with iCloud backup. That is a totally separate function of iCloud.

I'm really sorry it's not working for you. Did you take a look at the
support article I sent you and follow all the troubleshooting steps in it?
When configured correctly, it's a beautiful thing.

The advantage of syncing your contacts with iCloud instead is no matter
where your iDevice is, you can get them back. If your only syncing them

Hi Cher,

I Work is not required for contacts and calendar syncing, in fact there are
no native iWork apps for Windows at all. That article that you linked to in
your last message was talking about the requirements for syncing and editing
documents, spreadsheets and presentations. You may safely ignore that
requirement.

As for contacts, calendars and reminders sync, I am using Outlook 2013 and
have never used Outlook 2007 before with iCloud. However, Apple's own
knowledge base clearly states that Outlook 2007 should work fine, so I
believe the representative you spoke to was incorrect.

Try to follow all the troubleshooting steps linked to in these articles. Be
sure to double-check whether or not the iCloud add-in for Outlook is
disabled, because in my experience this is often the cause of broken
syncing.

iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Calendar: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3999
Also check out this third party site for other tips and workarounds:
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/icloud-and-outlook-problems/

Not sure what screen reader you're using, but if it's JAWS, I'd be happy to
connect to JAWS Tandem with you and see if I can help at all (no guarantees,
though). You could also try contacting Apple telephone support and see if
they can advise you. Off the top of my head, though, I can't remember if
they would provide support for their Windows applications, but if you can
tie it in to a question about your iOS device, they might be able to provide
some suggestions.

RE: new carrier needed!

2014-06-23 Thread Cristóbal
Since you say that you're with T-Mobile, then you're going to need a GSM
MVNO. I hear that AllTel and Straight Talk are pretty good. You could just
stick with T-Mobile since their cheapest Simple Plan is something like
$40.00 for unlimited talk, text and 500 mb of data.

I use Ting which uses the Sprint network and am paying around $50.00 a month
for both my wife and I. Ting wouldn't work for you as the GSM phone won't
work on the Ting/Sprint CDMA network. That and Ting doesn't yet support the
5C.

I think ATT has started to offer so-so attractive pre-paid smart phone
plans too, but perhaps someone whose using ATT or one of the other GSM MVNO
companies can chime in with more accurate information.

Turn-By-turn Directions Only With Car Mode In Navigon

2014-06-23 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello Folks,

I started to play around with MBraille and Blind Square. All things worked
well, but this is what I observed in Navigon as my choice for GPS navigation.
When in pedestrian mode, there is only a button to recall the directions and no
link or button for turn-by-turn directions. One will only get turn-by-turn
dihections when the car mode is selected. Am I missing something here or is it
something that I am just discovering now after all these yearshis Just FYI.

Best,
Eileen
