RE: IPhone 5s And Radio
Thank you so much, another thing for me to have a play with at the weekend. If you go to the BBC web site and a radio station and click listen now, it doesn't play but I expect that is because there is a plugin that is not available. I think I am correct in saying that it needs Flash and that is not available on the IPhone but I could be very wrong! -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Christopher Chaltain Sent: 30 July 2014 12:38 To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: IPhone 5s And Radio I suppose it's subjective, but I would think most people would agree that using the App Store on your iPhone would be the easiest way to go. A question about VoiceOver and accessibility code.
Hello, I’m Hyongsop Kim in Korea. I have a question about iOs VoiceOver and accessibility code. When I test some iOs applications, the big and happened usually issue is fake focus. In other words, if I’m in a-1 menu anda prior menu contents is gone from the real screen. But VoiceOver reads prior menus and real a-1 menus when I flick to the right. Another example is the layer. Some layer is opened, VoiceOver reads prior contents that before layer was opened. So screen reader users may hard to distinguish which focuses are real. Let’s think about Google Drive app. An app, there is a main menu button and the button is run as a layer. But strangely, when I opened main menu button layer, there is a search my drive edit box, but this edit box is not real focus. I’m wondering why this issue is happened? Is this reason that VoiceOver can’t distinguish hide contents and real contents? What is the method to sove the problem? Thank y. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. RE: IPhone 5s And Radio
Hi, Just tried those steps, fantastic, found the IPlayer radio and went to download but I have not used my ICloud account before. I have to enter my credit card details which is causing me a bit of an issue. I can enter the card number etc but need to enter the expiry date which is a month and year. It seems to be saying popup and double tap to activate the picker, I double tap but I can't seem to find how to enter the month. I tried flicking up and down but this just seems to activate the voice over speed on the rota, any idea what I am doing wrong? This looks absolutely fantastic. RE: installing Itunes
The side bar just gives you access to your different libraries like music, books, tones, apps etc. as well as your device. If you turn the side bar off there is an “iPhone” button which takes you to your device. If I want to switch libraries I just press Control+F to go to the search field, then I tab twice and I’m on whatever library is active. For example, if I am in the music library and do what I just described, Jaws will announce “Music, button”. If I activate that button with spacebar or enter it expands into a treeview and I can arrow around just as in the side bar and get to all my libraries. For playlist management which I believe used to be in the side bar, all you have to do is check the Playlist radio button which you find when the Music library is active. Here you find a list with all your playlists, you can right click on them to play them, rename them, delete them etc. You can also make new playlists although it’s probably easier to do that from your main music listing. It really is not that difficult, there is just a lot of tabbing around involved pretty much anywhere in iTunes, but it’s all quite accessible and in my view more so than Windows Media Player or winamp. In any case, you can’t manage your iDevices with them so it’s a mute point. If you make sure you are at the top of the page when you do this it will put right onto the “Download iTunes Now” link. 3. Press enter to activate the link. 4. On the next page just use the Jaws quick nav key for “buttons” which is “b” and press it until you find the “download Now” button. If you use Internet Explorer you should hear the message about the notification bar where you can select to “run” or “save”. Use Alt+N to bring focus to these buttons. I prefer to save the installation file first and then run it from my hard drive, but especially if you have a fast internet connection you could just run it. Keep in mind that it is a relatively large file so it may take a while for it to download before the install wizard starts. 5. In the installation wizard just accept the default choices and continue to press Next. There is a set of scripts John Martin wrote which are called blindTunes and which some people find helpful. They make a few things more accessible, but you best check this out as there is a Podcast on the BlindTunes website which you can find at the following address: http://www.blindTunes.net If you want to start with John’s description/demo of what BlindTunes does, look for the following link: Click here to hear an audio tour of Blind Tunes - Length 47 Minutes. iTunes is actually very accessible as it is if you have one of the latest versions of Jaws. Jaws 15 is of course best, but Jaws 14 and even 13 should work well. Here Jonathan Mosen did a 2-part Podcast which I would definitely recommend. It’s done in typical Jonathan fashion which means it’s done extremely well. The Podcast was done as part of the FS Cast series of podcasts and it was done with Jaws 14 and after iTunes 11 came out so it’s very much up-to-date. Below are the direct links for both episodes: Part 1: Episode 73, December 2012 http://podcast.freedomscientific.com/FSCast/episodes/fscast073-December2012.mp3 Part 2: Episode 74, January 2013 http://podcast.freedomscientific.com/FSCast/episodes/fscast074-January2013.mp3 apart from that Ari’s offer for some one-on-one help might be a good way to go after you listened to Jonathan’s Podcast which I would do first so you get an overview of how things work in iTunes. One last suggestion would be that you not use the sidebar in iTunes 11. This is not turned on by default, but if it is turned on it makes iTunes look a bit more like iTunes 10 which a lot of people think is easier. However, a recent article which somebody posted to the list a few days ago suggests that in iTunes 12 the sidebar will be finally gone completely and iTunes 12 will be released simultaneously with iOs 8 in mid to late September. It is not a good idea to not upgrade iTunes as you may

Re: IPhone 5s And Radio
Hello Steven. Just in case no one has answered your question. make sure that you are set to characters by activating the rota. I.e. place thumb and index finger as if you were to turn a dial with your phone portrait. Then let your hand do the motion of the dial and wait for voice Over to say characters. It's very difficult to explain. If you want help over Skype, you can let me know and I can help you over the week end if you like. i am in the UK so just let me know. Kind regards. Kawal. RE: IPhone 5s And Radio
Often these picker item fields pop up towards the bottom of the phone once you double tap. For example, if it asks for you rexpiration month, double tap on that, then check towards the bottom of the screen to see if you find a place which lists the months, then flick up or down to find the month you need. I can't remember if this is the case here, but often you then have to flick left to find a Done button and double tap it before you can move on to the next picker item which in your case would be the expiration year. I do agree with Cris, i think to get to the real story, the I Witness news on various social media is the best for now. You might have to configure your account for pop first on their web page. After that, choose other type of account instead of letting mail do it for you in the mail settings on your device. then you can add the appropriate pop incoming and outgoing server info, port numbers, etc, by hand. RE: Pre-orders now open for iOS 8 Without the Eye
I have a problem, I want to preorder, but don't to my knowledge have a PayPal account. I tried to be a guest for now, it tells me info is missing but, I can't see it, every field has the correct info. I know last year my husband bought the book for me on his PayPal account, but he passed May 30th so that is not an option for me. If I am making an error somewhere, signing up won't be a piece of cake either. I note in the phone number field that they are using dashes and so did I, could that be the problem? No eyes here to help me figure it out, had my name first and last, my street address, second line ignored, city, state, zip and phone number with the dashes, it is the only thing it seems to me that could be incorrect. Unless it does not like Scottsdale, but Tom had an account he used infrequently. I sort of want one also now. I use TuneIn Radio Pro and you can find what I think are most of the different BBC channels, including many local stations to particular areas of Great Britan. I usually listen to the World Service for in depth news. They have good comedy shows on BBC Radio 4 and so on. RE: The difference between Tunin Radio pro and the other tunin Radio please was IPhone 5s And Radio
I think the difference may be that the pro/paid version allows you to create an account and have your favorites automatically show up if you install it on another device. I'm not completely sure about that. I bought the pro version early on and don't recall now exactly why. Are the descriptions the same for each version in the app store? Re: Continuous reading in iBooks, is it possible?
Hi, Diane, You'll have to use the panning buttons to read with Braille, and you'll have to switch pages using the right rocker bar. If you use the rotor, you'll only switch to the items on the page you're on. If you have a page with several links, this will work nicely. Usually, though, there is only one heading when they occur on a page. The Braille display will not follow as you read with audio, so you'll have to read either with audio or with the display. Re: Changing Account Settings from Imap to Pop?
Hi. I'm using the iOS Mail client. I only have the iPod for Internet use at this point. I can choose other for an account type, at which point it comes up with a form for name, email, and password. When I hit next, it sets an Imap account up for me, and I want to use pop, because my husband and I share this account, and we can leave messages on the server. I haven't found anywhere in the mail settings to change it, and some of the editable incoming server settings still show as imap if I try to change them. Also, I've tried deleting the account and starting over. I put in my name and email information, and there doesn't seem to be a place for server names, etc. When I press the next button, it says looking up and then presents mewith the Imap option only. Re: Sonos multi-room Wireless music system was: Bluetooth speakers
Sieghard, As always a great review and feedback. A few pointers on your notes... All three Sonos Play units, Play 5, Play 3, and Play 1, can be configured into a stereo pair, they work brilliantly like this... Further, you can add a Sonos Sub to any combination of: Play 5 either single or stereo pair, Play 3 either single or stereo pair Play 1 either single or stereo pair. You can also add the sub to the Sonos Connect Amp but not the Connect as they assume that you have an existing HiFi infrastructure for that. The iOS app as you say has recently undergone some major changes, I worked closely with Sonos on these and am very pleased with the result. I feel that their offering is superior to most everything else because what they offer is more than a Bluetooth or Airplay speaker. Sonos doesn't natively support Airplay, but one can Airplay enable a Sonos system by hooking an Airport Express up to one of the players via the 3.5mm audio out on the Airport Express. Basically the Airport Express is just a source and if you Airplay to it you can access this from any Sonos player in your house. Currently Sonos makes 7 different players: 1. Connect: a small box which can be connected to an existing receiver via Optical Digital, Coax Digital or analog RCA. The Connect also has 1 set of RCA inputs which let's you hook up a CD player, portable player like a VictorReader Stream, a laptop etc. Anything that has a 3.5mm or RCA output. 2. Connect Amp: This is similar to a Connect except that it has an integrated 110 Watt Class D amplifier (55 Watts per channel). It also has the RCA input as well as an RCA output for hooking up a conventional powered subwover. Furthermore there are regular speaker terminals like you would find on any receiver or amplifier and with a good set of speakers the Connect Amp sounds fantastic, well, basically as good as your speakers; the amplifier is of very good quality. 3. Play 5: This is their first and top of the line portable boombox type player. It has 5 separate Class D amplifiers and speakers in a traditional boombox style player. 4. Play 3: a smaller version of the Play 5, I don't have one of those so can't say anything about it from my own experience. 5. Play 1: yet a smaller and more economical portable player, once again I only own a Play 5 and a few Connect and Connect Amp players and have no experience with it. I believe both the Play 1 and Play 3 can be used as a pair for stereo. 6. Playbar: A long speaker, actually multiple speakers, designed to sit under a TV for surround sound. This can be used in conjunction with Play 1 or Play 3 units to create a wireless system with front and rear speakers. 7. Sonos Sub: This is a wireless subwover which works seamlessly with the Connect Amp, the Playbar and I think the Play 5. What I like about Sonos is the versatility and the fact that you can expand the system by adding any of the zone players into the mix. The Sonos system requires an internet connection and you can achieve this either by hooking up one of the players to your router (they all have Ethernet network ports) or, if you want the freedom to move the player around, you can get the ZoneBridge for I think $80. It connects to your router and creates the network the Sonos system uses. You can then play any internet radio station you would find in apps like Tune In or Ootunes and Sonos supports just about every music service there is such as Sirius/XM, Spotify, Rhapsody and many many more. Your entire Sonos system can be controlled either from the iPhone app (of course this also works on an iPod Touch and iPad), they have an Android controller as well as controllers for the PC and Mac. The iOS app has recently undergone some major updates and while it was quite accessible and very useable before, it's now near perfect and a joy to use. The desktop controller for the PC works fine with Jaws and I can't speak for Android or the Mac. I am sure there are many good speakers out there but most of them are mostly just that, speakers. Sonos goes beyond that by creating a music system which is more than just a speaker because it works seamlessly across an entire large house if you wish, you could have a dozen of their various players from the portable ones to the Connect or Connect Amp + a Playbar with a few Play
Re: Sonos multi-room Wireless music system was: Bluetooth speakers
The Mac application is not perfect, but, you can label many of the unlabelled buttons, the help tags are present which makes labelling quick and easy. as for iOS app compatibility and accessibility, it wasn't 100% but now is close as dam it, they now have a policy in place to effectively accessibility test all beta programs which should prevent your fear. Re: Voices for voice dream
Yes, the samples are still there. I like the online demos more simply because I can test punctuation. For instance, some synthesizers treat all punctuation like periods, so commas and question marks don't sound how they should. But yes, VDR still lets you play a preset sample for every voice before you download it. Re: upgrading to a 5s
Touch ID is very easy to set up and use, and when you initially set up your phone you will be prompted to save your fingerprint. If you skip that step, just go to Settings Touch ID at any time to get started. The 5S is aluminum, not glass, on the back; it has a better camera and flash; it has a far faster processor, so you'll notice that everything is much quicker; it is larger overall (taller, no wider, and a bit thinner); you'll have an extra row of icons on your home screens; it has a new charging port that will not work with any of the cables or docks you have for your 4S. The home, power, volume, and mute controls are all in the same place, as are the camera and charger openings. The one difference is that the headphone jack is on the bottom left, next to the charging jack, instead of on the top of the phone. Questions about Sonos and its features
Hello again. I’m thinking of adding a Sonos sound system to my wish list for christmas or something, but before i decide if i should get one or not, i have some more questions. I’m thinking about buying a Sonos Play 5 or two for my living room and a Sonos Play 3 or 1 to have on the balcony and/or generally carrying around and a connect to hook my JBL Onbeat dock out in the kitchen to provided i can do that. Not sure how the connect works but would it be possible to have such a setup? Does the app for Sonos have a sleep timer? How would one go about listening to audio books on the sonos system? Bring up the App Store app on your iPhone, double tap the share tab at the bottom of the screen, double tap in the search field and type your search string, which would probably be iPlayer in this case. You can then select from the list of suggestions below the edit field or double tap the search button at the right of the keyboard to kick off a complete search. When the information on the iPlayer app comes up, double tap on the free button and then on the install button. You'll be prompted for your Apple ID password. After it's installed, you can double tap the open button or look for it in your last home page. I hope this helps. I also hope it's accurate. I'm in a hurry, so I'm doing this from memory. How is it different from the 4s? Is tripple click home still an option for turning voiceover on and off? Rebecca yes you can set triple click home to turn voice over on or off. Also I hear that fingerprint id is also turned on. Is there a way to disable that or is it easy to use? The finger print scanner is not turned on by default. It has no finger prints in it's memory yet. You can have up to 10 finger prints at once. I used my index fingers on both hands and my thumbs. That was a total of 4 fingerprints. You can also choose to use your finger print as your login to your iTunes account so if you want to buy music, a book, a ring tone etc, you can just use your finger instead of having to type in all your usual login stuff. When you get the new phone, can you go into your app store account and get the apps from your old phone to the new one? If you have the same information in your account for both the old and new phones, when you buy something on the new phone it also appears on the other phone. You can still delete the apps you don't want on one or the other with out it deleting on both at once. If you can read the braille fast enough and slow down the speech enough, you can have the braille your panning through and the audio you're listening to, track each other approximately. - Original Message - From: Teresa Cochran To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2014 2:29 PM Subject: Re: Continuous reading in iBooks, is it possible? Hi, Diane, You'll have to use the panning buttons to read with Braille, and you'll have to switch pages using the right rocker bar. If you use the rotor, you'll only switch to the items on the page you're on. If you have a page with several links, this will work nicely. Usually, though, there is only one heading when they occur on a page. The Braille display will not follow as you read with audio, so you'll have to read either with audio or with the display. RE: Questions about Sonos and its features
Hi Krister, Yes,sonos has a sleep timer as well as alarms. You can set single alarms, repeating alarms and multiple alarms. You can specify what stream your alarm should play, e.g. you could tell it to play a particular playlist, artist or even a particular internet radio stream or subscription based music service. You can also specify that the alarms starts playing your selection and then stops automatically after, say 1 hour. This works well for people who have a routine in the morning which starts with being woken up, doing their thing and then leaving for work. I don't know the dock you have, but yes, as long as your dock has either RCA or 3.5mm out you could hook it up to a Connect. Keep in mind that a Connect alone doesn't do anything, you have to connect it either to an existing stereo receiver or amplifier with speakers or hook up a set of powered computer speakers. The Play 5 also has a 3.5mm audio in jack so unless you want another player somewhere you could hook up your dock to your Play 5 in the living room and of course you could play what's coming from the dock on your Play 3 or Play 1. Keep in mind that somewhere you need a wired connection to your router. This would either mean you have to connect your Play 5 to your router or if that is not practical you can just get a \sonos Bridge, put it near your router and then all your other players can run off the bridge wirelessly, all you need to do is place themnear a power outlet. Lastly, keep in mind that Sonos has a 30-day money back guaranty. I would order from them directly although they do have retailers and I assume the money back guaranty can be done through them as well. RE: Questions about Sonos and its features
Hi again,Krister, Sorry, I forgot about audio books. You can listen to audio books in multiple ways. If you listen to Audible you can authorize your Audible account on the Sonos system and if your books are downloaded to your PC with the Audible Manager you can play them directly on Sonos. I prefer to use my iPhone and to just Airplay whatever audio book I am listening to whether it's with Audible or an MP3 audio book with voice Dream Reader. That is one of the reasons why I prefer to use an Airport Express which is hooked up to one of my Sonos players (I explained that in previous posts) to basically Airplay enable my Sonos system. The Airport Express has a 3.5mm stereo output and I hook that into an input on one of my sonos players. I have it set to auto play whenever a signal is received by Sonos from the Airport Express so as soon as I select airplay and select Sonos (I named that Auirport Express sonos) then I don't even have to touch the Sonos Controller on my iPhone or laptop because the book automatically starts playing in my bedroom. If I want it to play on other players in the house I go into the app and group whichever other players I want the book to play on with the Master Bedroom. Lastly, you could simply have a 3.5mm audio cable with 2 male ends and keep it connected to your Play 5. Then you can plug the other end into your iPhone headset jack and play whatever you want. The only thing is that then of course Voiceover will also come through Sonos and your iphone is tethered to that Play 5 so if you are out on the balcony with your Play 3 and want to stop the book or rewind you would have to go back to where the phone is. Of course that is also the case if your iPhone is on your JBL dock which is connected to the Play 5. The only way you get the freedom to have your iPhone with you and do this is to use an Airport Express and Airplay. I would also wait and see if Sonos is putting out anything new this fall. Often any of their new devices are released in late summer or the fall. Personally I am hoping that this year there will finally be a good quality stereo headphone or maybe a small, portable headset receiver/amplifier which you could clip on your belt and plug in whatever headphones you already have. RE: upgrading to a 5s
Hi Rebecca, Alex pretty much hit on all the differences andsimilarities with respect to cables, buttons and size. My only suggestion is that you use iTunes to do an encrypted backup of your 4S and then restore from that backup using iTunes. This will give you the most complete backup with all passwords etc. Basically you connect your 4S to your computer, open iTunes and go to your device. Now tab a whole bunch of times, probably 20 or 25 times, until you find a checkbox to encrypt your backup. Activate it with the spacebar, you will now be prompted for a password, tab once and retype the same password, then tab to OK and activate it. Now your backup will start and jaws (if you are using \Jaws) will give you occasional progress indication, when it’s done you hear the familiar triple tone. This is a simple explanation, I don’t know anything about your iPhoneand whether you already sync from time to time with itunes in order to transfer music to your phone etc. When you get your new phone just hook it up to the computer, go to “File”, “Devices” and select “Restore”. iTunes will ask you to put in the password you selected when you did your encrypted backup and after that it will ask you if you want to restore from that backup. If all you have on your phone are a few apps and you don’t have email accounts set up and a lot of text messages and voice mails you want to preserve, then I would almost recommend that you set up as a new device and redownload your apps which you can do for free. Touch ID in my opinion is definitely the way to go. It works fantastically and it’s much easier and faster to unlock your phone with your fingerprint than even if you have no passcode set up at all. This way you have the security of a passcode and the ease of use. Keep in mind that if you ever reboot your phone that you have to enter your 4-digit passcode the first time after it reboots. Once you do that you can again use the fingerprint. Also, you can use a passcode without registering fingerprints, but you cannot do fingerprints without first setting up a passcode because it is always your fall back if the fingerprint for some reason is not recognized. One example could be that you get a cut on your fingertip or maybe you glued something and got some glue on the finger you use. If you are getting your phone at a physical Apple Store and if you have a laptop I would almost recommend that you take your laptop and get them to help you back up your old phone, set up the new phone and do the restore. How to Navigate the Mail app on an iPad with a Bluetooth Keyboard
Hi all, I have a somewhat perplexing situation that I ran into yesterday and will probably run into it again soon, hence my questions. I was working with an elderly student who was trying to use the mail app on her iPad with a Logitech bluetooth keyboard, as she has trouble performing typical Voiceover gestures including flicking, swiping, et cetera; because of tremors her hands just aren't steady enough to perform many gestures reliably. . The two-finger swipe down to start continuous reading of a message just confounded her, and from what I could tell, one practically had to be a contortionist to execute the VO+B command on the keyboard. To further complicate things, we couldn't find a Back button to take us back to the inbox. I'm looking for a simple and effective keyboard-based method for opening a message, reading it and returning to the inbox, then moving to the next message and repeating that process all over again. The student is using an iPad Air with the Logitech keyboard, and I was using an iPad Mini with a Logitech keyboard that fits the Mini. Any ideas from you Ipad users out there? Thanks in advance. Update Urgent help with BootCamp needed
Dear List, I solved the problem of BootCamp not creating a partition asking for the windows 7 install disk. I downloaded a windows 7 ISo and put it in my DVD drive. that allowed BootCamp to continue to create the partition. the mac rebooted before I could eject the win7 install disk. so it loaded the install disk and the only way I could eject it was to restart the mac and hold the option key at the mac startup sound. I then could eject the disk and insert the win 7 PE talking install disk.once I restarted the mac NVDA came up talking and I was able to install windows 7. My $10 external Sabrent sound card from WalMart worked great. Now I have another problem, I got an error when trying to install the BootCamp drivers on windows 7. it said BootCamp x64 not compatible with this computer. I may not be wording it exactly, but it was simmular. any ideas? so for now, I am using the external sound card. so far, everything else seems OK. Previous Message Hi, I listen to the Podcast by Armondo, but My version of BootCamp is completely different. When I started the bootcamp assistant, I had two choices, 1. download the bootcamp win7 drivers and 2. install win7. Armondo had three choices I have only 2. BootCamp is telling me it cant detect my win7 Disk, insert it and press OK. My win7 PE mega disk talking installer is in the CD drive. it did not get to the point where it should have asked me to devide the portitions evenly. so because I dont have the win7 ISO in the drive, I cant get any further. I'm using Maveriks 10.94 on a 2009 MacBook. Important help with mail!
I have 2 e-mail accounts on my iphone. My GMail account, and my Road Runner account through Time Warner. When I looked at my Road Runner account today, I noticed that I had several messages that were no longer there. Basically any message that I was keeping that was older then Tuesday, was gone!! Is there any reason this might have happened? I do have my mail backed up to icloud, is there anyway to see if those messages are backed up to icloud? I know the answer is probably no, but is there any thing I can do to possibly get those messages back? I also checked my GMail account, and no messages are missing from that account. My Road Runner account is a pop account because time warner does not offer an imap account. I guess any message I want to keep, I better remove it from the inbox, and even put the info in a text message when possible. Any help or guidance would be appreciated!! Re: How to Navigate the Mail app on an iPad with a Bluetooth Keyboard
Escape will act as your back button, at least it should. Yes, the VO keystrokes can be difficult, and your student sounds like one for whom I'd recommend a RiVO (www.mobience.com). It is a mini keyboard, in a way, but it has single keys for read all, back, flick left/right, rotor commands, and so on. You can enter text with it, though it is difficult to get used to. The keys are small, as I said, and your student may run into problems with that, but then again maybe not. Still, though it is expensive, it might be worth a try. Re: How to Navigate the Mail app on an iPad with a Bluetooth Keyboard
Hi Tom, This may be another solution for your student. There's an app called Voice Brief. Although it has some gestures in it, the app will read the first 5 or 10 items for whatever items are set up in the app such as weather, tweets, mail, etc. With mail, it will read the first couple of lines before one may want to open it. The app is compatible for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. I also poked around accessibility under General in settings to see if there was a method to insert a sticky key function for the blue tooth keyboard like on the Macs in system preferences, but I didn't see anything promising.
