RE: Google MAPS
Thanks for taking the time to help me, I tried it for the first time this morning. It is pretty impressive to say the least! Do you know if the screen locks when you are on a route? The phone is in my pocket but if I turn it up, I can hear it easily. Caused some confusion on the bus I think :-) Is there a walking mode as well? -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Christopher Chaltain Sent: 04 August 2014 09:26 To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Google MAPS Yes, it's accessible. I haven't used the Maps app from Apple in quite a while, so I'm not sure what advantages you have in Google Maps over the Maps app from Apple. When I originally looked at the Maps app from Apple, I couldn't enter a destination except by address. With Google Maps, I can just type the name of a location and then select the one I want from a list. I also save popular destinations to my profile and then I can just select them from there. I assume Apple Maps has these features, and it was just user ignorance on my part. Google Maps will also store your route locally on your phone. You'll need an internet connection to download it originally, but if you end up driving through an area with no coverage, as I did last weekend, you still get turn by turn directions. I'm not sure if Apple Maps has this feature or not. Finally, I just find Google Maps to have a simpler more intuitive interface. Again, that could just be what I'm used to though, and it's definitely subjective. Both apps are free, so there's no issue with having both on your phone and giving each a try. Re: Bluetooth between Apex and IPhone
Hello All. Since I got my Focus Blue, and although I have an Apex for my work, I don't like using the Apex with my I phone any more. I just don't find the Humanware Apex working so well with IOS since I have experienced both the Focus Blue 40 and now the 14 with my IOS device. I can't offer any specific advice on fixing it, unfortunately, but I can say that you aren't alone. This is just one of the great many reasons I've given up on Humanware's notetakers altogether. Re: Baum braille display
I did see this Braille Display at Sight Village which is held in the UK every year. Although I liked the Braille, I thought the device rather expensive and a bit chunky for my tastes. But pairing it to 3 or 4 devices will be good for someone if they can afford the heavy price tag. Just my thoughts. Kawal. On 6 Aug 2014, at 02:08 am, Richard Turner rich...@turner42.com wrote: I saw the Ultra Vario 20 cell braille display today. The cost is $2395.00 and is made by Baum. In my opinion, it is one of the best braille displays I've seen. It has a switch to toggle from display mode to notetaker mode. In the notetaker mode, it has a word processor that can read the standard text file types, BRF, TXT, DOC, etc. What you write in the word processor can be opened on the computer I think as a TXT file. It also has a pdf and excel viewer. They plan to add a power point viewer this fall. You can have up to 4 bluetooth devices paired at one time. A key combination toggles through the different bluetooth channels. It has 32 GB of internal flash, plus can read and save to USB sticks. It has a key lock switch. I found the keyboard very comfortable to write on. It has the standard braille keys and the baum navigation keys, plus a few extra modifier keys for accessing menus, modes, etc. There is also a 40 cell model which cells for $3395.00. The braille felt very sharp and clear to me. It will start shipping around August 15th. You can read more about it and find a local dealer at: http://www.baumusa.com/ If I didn't already have the Braille Edge in my office, I would buy the 20 cell for its portability and features. Just sharing FYI as always and apologies for those who see it more than once. Cheers Paula. SFO Terminal 2 San Francisco International is about to make life decidedly easier for blind and visually impaired travelers. The airport has teamed up with Indoo.rs to unveil a Bluetooth beacon system that will help these passengers find their way through Terminal 2 using only their phone. When users walk past one of the 500 transmitters, their devices will announce nearby points of interest; they can find flight gates, ATMs, information desks and power outlets without asking for help. An early version of the necessary app also has a directory for sighted visitors. The guide technology only works on iOS devices so far, but The Verge understands that it will eventually support Android-toting guests as well. Indoo.rs expects the service to be available either late in the third quarter or early in the fourth. __._,_.___ Posted by: Petrus tuerlings pet...@vodafone.co.nz Reply via web post •Reply to sender•Reply to group • Start a New Topic • Messages in this topic (1) Yahoo Groups New feature! Re: Kobo on ipad mini
Dear Anne, this is most generous a description. Thank you! Andrew On 5 Aug 2014, at 22:26, Anne Robertson annefromo...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Andrew, Kobo is complex to set up and has changed many times in the years I've been using it. When you launch Kobo, you should find the Library button at the top left of the screen, just under the signal strength indicator for your mobile carrier. Double tap the Library button. You should find a button labeled Nav Menu icon iPhone. Double tap this and, sweeping right from the top left, you should find Home, Library, All, Books, Magazines, Kobo collections and lots more. Double tap on Books. Your books should then appear. Double tap on the book you want to read. Sometimes, you have to do this several times before it works. With a book open, you need to double tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the tool bar at the bottom, but with VoiceOver active, you can't access the Settings screen. You need sighted help to get it set up. The page transition style you need is Scrolling. After that, a two-finger swipe up the way will read the whole chapter. At the end of the chapter, double-tap the link at the bottom right of the screen to go to the next chapter. A three-finger swipe up will turn the pages should you be interrupted in the middle of a chapter. It also works well with a Braille display. __._,_.___ Posted by: Petrus tuerlings pet...@vodafone.co.nz Reply via web post • Reply to sender • Reply to group • Start a New Topic • Messages in this topic (1) Yahoo Groups New feature! I don't think the screen locks when you're using google Maps. I touch the screen when using it to get more information on where I am, the next direction and how close I am to my destination. When my wife uses it, who's sighted, she just leaves it on her lap while she's driving so she can refer to the route on the screen. Yes there is a walking or pedestrian mode. Re: Bluetooth between Apex and IPhone
True, some commands (space-e, space-z, or space with all six dots) will do this. A quick correction, though: the pass-through command is enter-4-5-6 (or 4-5-6-8), not backspace-4-5-6. You also only need to add the spacebar if you are using eight-dot braille. On Aug 5, 2014, at 7:26 PM, Eileen Misrahi eileen.misr...@gmail.com wrote: Hi There, I just want to chime in about the Apex returning to the main menu in Keysoft. There are certain keystrokes such as advancing to the next page on an iOS device with the Apex that if you didn't apply the pass through keystroke of dots 4-5-6-7 and spacebar, you would get kicked out of using the Apex with your iDevice. The O chord will open the option menu on the Apex and that's why a pass through keystroke is vital. Hence, if you were quick enough, you could go back into the terminal menu on the pain menu and press enter. Otherwise, one would need to pair the Apex with the phone again. I sometimes forget about this if I haven't used the Apex with my phone for a while. HTH. How to initialize? More on Apex with IPhone via Bluetooth
HI guys Wow incredible! Call it luck, but I find since I had to resynchronize my Apex and IPhone via VO's Braille setting because it got to a point where it said the IPhone was incompatible with the Apex (or something along those lines), my connection experience between these has been wow! Imagine my joy in reading names of twitter followers in Braille after I'd only heard them with Jaws? but ok enough of this rambling! My question this time is what's the initializing procedure? The way I do it now, is: 1.-On the Apex, go into Braille Terminal Mode; 2.-Unblock my IPhone, and wait until they connect, blocking and unblocking until they pair, holding the phone close to the Apex etc. Thus my question, if there is a way, what's the correct initialization procedure when preparing the Apex to pair with my IPhone? Thanks for info. -- Enviado desde mi lap Gerardo J Corripio Flores Psicólogo, Terapéuta Reiki Saludos desde Tampico, Tamaulipas México RompiendoBarreras espacio de psicología/Superación Personal Sábados 10PM México http://radiogeneral.com ¡los esperamos! -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. There are certain keystrokes such as advancing to the next page on an iOS device with the Apex that if you didn’t apply the pass through keystroke of dots 4-5-6-7 and spacebar, you would get kicked out of using the Apex with your iDevice. The O chord will open the option menu on the Apex and that’s why a pass through keystroke is vital. Hence, if you were quick enough, you could go back into the terminal menu on the pain menu and press enter. Otherwise, one would need to pair the Apex with the phone again. Re: Baum braille display
Having the thumb keys is definitely a feature I'll miss, but I can get used to using the navigation buttons for panning. I already have them on the Brailliant, so it won't be too hard of a transition. Having the joystick might be interesting. Re: Radium and sirius?
Hello, I started having trouble On Monday afternoon with the Radium app playing my Sirius stations. I then tried switching to the Sirius app, but the Sirius app said my log in information was invalid. So I called Sirius customer care, and was informed that Sirius was gradually making people change their passwords for security reasons. I then got my password changed for my mobile device, and the Sirius app now works for me. But the thing is that the Radium app still does not work with my Sirius stations. It accepted my new password, but none of my sirius stations will play. I am beginning to think that sirius changed something on their end that no longer lets Radium access there station feeds. I think we all need to make the developer of the Radium app aware of this, so hopefully it can be fixed. The Radium app will play other stations, just not sirius radio stations. I tried to delete the app, restart my phone, then re install the app, but it still did not work. If anyone finds a solution for this, please share it with us all!! In the meantime, I am forced to start using the sirius app. Chris Chaffin Sent from my iPhone On Aug 6, 2014, at 10:04 AM, Tim Emmons temmo...@gmail.com wrote: I just started having trouble this morning. I'm really looking forward to a non-invasive way of checking blood sugar. With today's technology there's no reason why we should have to prick our fingers to get a blood glucose reading. Re: importing audio books for voice dream
Hi Joe, These steps are off the top of my head, as I am not near a computer at the moment. Hopefully they are close enough to help you figure it out. If the audio book comtains several files, you first need to zip them up on your computer. 2. Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes. 3. In the left hand column, in iTunes, go down to where you see your phones name. 4. Tab until you get to apps, I think the option is and press the space bar to check the apps checkbox. 5. Tab across until you get to the list of apps that can transfer documents, then use your up and down arros to move to voicedream. 6. Once VoiceDream is highlighted, tab to the add button and activate it. This will open a standard open file dialog. 7. Brows to the zip file you created and press enter on it. This should then copy the book to your iPhone. Once this is done, you can disconnect your phone from iTunes. When you launch VoiceDream and hopefully you will see the audio book in VoiceDreams library. Hopefully I have all these steps correctly. If not hopefully someone else can chime in or i can check this out tonight to varify the steps, if you don't get it working. Hope this helps, Brett. Re: importing audio books for voice dream
The following message tells you the beginning of how to import a book to Voice Dream via iTunes, but there are some steps I need to add. Transferring a book to Voice Dream via iTunes is different from the other apps that can use ITunes to transfer material to them. First, when you navigate to the zipped file you want to transfer, you do not hit enter on it, just highlight it by focusing on it with the up and down arrow keys. Then, tab to the open file button, and hit enter. Technically , it does not open it yet, it just prepares it to be opened in the app into which you are transferring it. Under most circumstances, after hitting the open button, you would then tab to the synch button, or the apply button, activate it, and iTunes would transfer the file to the app. However, to import something to Voice Dream, after you hit the open button in iTunes on your computer, start Voice Dream on your phone, and activate the add button, which is in the lower left hand of the screen, when you are in the list of books you already have in Voice Dream. Start flicking over, and iTunes is the first one, or really near the beginning of the list. Tap iTunes, then flick around until you find the name of the file you just opened in iTunes on your computer. If there is more than one, there is a select all button. Tap the file name or the select all button, then continue to flick around (in my case, I go to the left, and you will find a load button. Tap the load button, and wait a minute, and Voice Dream hopefully will tell you when the file, or files, have been loaded, with an okay button. Finally, flick to the done button, and tap it. When I couldn't get Voice Dream to import files, I admittedly went through some frustration and use of profane language until I got it figured out. Although, in my opinion, it is almost more trouble than it is worth, It will work. RE: download link for IOS 7.12 iPhone 5s?
Hi Christina, DFU mode stands for Device Firmware Update mode. If an iPhone is in DFU mode it is recognized by iTunes, but it does not load iOS. This is mostly used by people who jailbreak or who want to upgrade or downgrade manually. Below are the steps for putting an iDevice into DFU mode: 1. Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable. 2. Turn off the device. 3. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds. 4. press the Home button for 10 seconds without letting go of the power button. 5. Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button for another 15 seconds. If the process was successful iTunes will alert you by saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode. it's most likely not something you will ever have to worry about. Hi again, Kliphton, Just out of curiocity, what caused your iPhone to go into DFU mode? Were you trying to jailbreak and are you sure it's in DFU mode and not in recovery mode? Also, I believe Scott is correct in saying that you can restore from iTunes if your phone is in DFU mode. A manual restore using an IPSW file is of course not a problem, but I don't think it's necessary. Here is a link to an Apple support thread which seems to also confirm this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5269891 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5269891 Regards, Sieghard From: mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com viphone@googlegroups.com [ mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kliphton Senior Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2014 9:11 PM To: mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com viphone@googlegroups.com; mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: download link for IOS 7.12 iPhone 5s? not when it is in DFU mode Kliphton ~iMessage,EmailFaceTime-Audio~ mailto:m.kliph...@gmail.com m.kliph...@gmail.com ~Twitter,Instagram,FourSquareSkype~ kliphton72 ~Text only~ 727-266-5283 Personal blog-read at your own risk! http://kliphskorner.wordpress.com/ http://kliphskorner.wordpress.com On Aug 5, 2014, at 11:52 PM, Scott Erichsen mailto:serich...@scotterichsen.com serich...@scotterichsen.com wrote: You should be able to just connect your phone to iTunes and restore it that way. Okay, my phone is in DFU mode, and I need to grab the IOS 7.12 update and install it manually. Anyone no where I can get it from? I have tried google, and on there it's all about IOS8 and how to update the beta. Thanks. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Apple iPhone 6 event is on Tuesday, September 9
Hello Listers, I was just listening to the latest today in iOS podcast and Rob announced that Apple apparently confirmed to what used to be All Things D that they will hold their iPhone 6 event on Tuesday, September 9. This of course is no big surprise when you look at announcements for the last few years, but it is surprising that Apple announced this 5 weeks in advance where in the past they only confirmed the date about a week or so before. According to Rob this means the public release of iOS 8 should follow on Wednesday, September 17 with the new iPhones being in stores and shipping on Friday, September 19. It will certainly be interesting to see which of the old devices will stick around and if there will only be a 4.7 and 5.5 inch iPhone 6 or also a 4 inch and whether all of the new devices will have sapphire crystal touch screens. The A8 chip is a given for the new phones and I think the rumours pretty much nailed the sizes for the new larger iPhones. What I haven't heard much about is what kind of upgrade the camera will get except that pictures seem to indicate a single flash again and also nothing much has been said about battery capacities. Oh, yes, I did hear that the iPhone 6 will also include a barometric sensor for measuring air pressure. I guess the rumours should sort of come together in the next few weeks. Enjoy the anticipation! If you want to keep up with what's going on subscribe to the Today in iOS Podcast, Rob has been talking about all the iOS 8 Betas (Beta 5 was released last Monday) and there will probably be one more Beta in 2 weeks before the Goldmaster release shortly before the event. For those who don't know this, the public release is usually the same as the Goldmaster unless something super serious is discovered in the Goldmaster release.
