Re: blutooth ear piece that works good with noise canselation

2014-12-26 Thread David Chittenden
The Motorola H19TXT is fully VoiceOver compatible, and there is no need to
install any MotoSpeak app for it to work.

Personally, I have now switched to the Motorola Sliver because I find it to be
more comfortable. It has the same features as the H19TXT.

Re: traffic app

2014-12-26 Thread Andy Baracco
i like Waze for this purpose. My commute to and from work involves a lot of
highway traffic, and Waze works well, partly because it uses crowd sourcing,
in other words, drivers can report traffic conditions to the app, and this
info is passed on.

Re: The ScanJig

2014-12-26 Thread Richard Turner
Dan,
Here is an updated version of my original message that started this thread in
answer to your question.

OK, I now have seen what I consider the Cadillac of stands.

I got the ScanJig at work Monday. I used KNFB Reader to scan the setup
instructions, free-hand, and was able to figure out the pieces and put it
together.

I enjoy puzzles, so it was fun putting it together. It didn't take more
than about 5 or 10 minutes to figure it out without sighted help.

There are pictures of the pieces, so a sighted person could probably do it
in 2.

The ScanJig costs $39.95 plus $6.00 shipping in the US. I think it is well
worth it.

It is made from hard plastic. It is a bit thicker than the other stands but
it looks way more durable.

It folds up into a box 13 by 9 and 1.5 inches thick.

The beauty of the ScanJig is that it can hold anything from a smart phone to
a tablet.

It holds both the document and the device at an angle so there is less
likelihood of casting a shadow over the document and it can capture the
maximum of the room light or use the flash. There are no lights needed on
the device itself.

There is a movable Device Holder that snaps into one of four slots at
various distances from the Document Shelf. On the Device Holder, is a
little shelf that snaps in to hold the phone or tablet. There are 10
adjustment holes so you can get the optimum height of the device pointing at
the document.

I found with both the iPhone 5s and the 6, that the first slot, which is
11.5 inches from the document was the best position. I also found that if I
put the shelf on the device holder in the second hole from the top, I can
get the entire document even if it has narrow margins.

There are some stick on pieces to help hold your device in place once you
get the position where you want it.

There are also two clips that can hold a document on the document shelf, for
example, a tri-fold letter that wants to curl, you can clip it in place so
it holds it steady.

It is definitely more bulky when folded up than either the Giraffe Reader or
the StandScan, but the fact that it will also hold a tablet from a full iPad
to an iPad Mini or any smart phone I think gives it a big edge. Not to
mention it is made out of much stronger material.

Re: Period shortcut question

2014-12-26 Thread Brett
Hi,

If you're using touch typing, the letter or space is entered when you release
your finger.

Try typing a word, then when you touch the space and lift your finger, then
touch the space and lift your finger again. This should do the trick.

It sounds like you are doing a tripple space.

Cheers,

It can, because there are choices that determine what is, and what is not,
spoken, how far from a crossing it should alert you, and other things I
don't recall right off the top of my head because I haven't changed them in
so long. But there certainly should be a noticeable difference. I hope

No offense taken. I'll be sure and go through the settings. I didn't think
that would make much difference. Thanks for the suggestion.

I subscribed to Seeing Eye GPS for one month. So far, I am not very happy
with it. When I went on a route with my Owen M instructor, it did not read
any of the intersections. It did not describe them. I thought that was
supposed to be its strength. Not sure if it's the operator or the GPS.

any of the intersections. It did not describe them. I thought that was

Subject: new bluetooth speaker

Hi all,

This morning my fiance got me a Syren bluetooth speaker for my iPhone 5.
This bluetooth speaker is portable and you can carry it or hold it with one
hand. But what I like about this bluetooth speaker it's very light weight and
very portable to take with me anywhere and I can put it in my purse.

It has a on and off button, volumes up and down, and the middle button is a all
purpose button that has the features of a play/puls

so I can listen to music. Plus on this middle button that is a all purpose
button it also has the feature to answer phone calls. It was very easy to pair
with my iPhone which I already did. The Syren bluetooth speaker sounds really
good and it has a very good distance raidious to the speaker.

I have a bluetooth headphone which I love to use but my bluetooth headphones
are ones that go over my ears when wearing them. And I have used my bluetooth
head phones when out walking listening to music while whalking but when I came
to a street crossing I would have to remove the head phones from my ears to be
able to hear traffic and what was around me.

Well now I can carry my portable bluetooth speaker in my purse and I can turn
the volume up a little bit so when I'm walking I can still listen to music or
answer a call if it comes in and still listen to the traffic and my
surroundings and be able to cross a street safely.

I'm really impressed with this Syren portable blutetooth speaker . Take care.

Re: blutooth ear piece that works good with noise canselation

Unfortunately, I don't know how I could give you a sample.

I charge it for about 45 minutes to an hour, and it gives me 4 hours. Not a
great time I know, but it is worth it to me, because people say that I sound
good on it, and it also works with VoiceOver where some do not.

Definitely that sort of thing can happen, even to a tech person (who trusted
some younger nephewsnieces , as did happen to a friend of mine some years
ago. The young'un sent emails with rather unflttering nicknames to a

Definitely some poor judgement here and all that. But what if a friend was
over and maybe your computer was on and your friend knew you were on this
list and they posted some stupid message as yourself, you would probably
hope not to be banned from this list. Anyhow, I guess it's time to drop it
and move on. We don't know anything about Ram, where he/she is from and for
all I know he/she is 18 years old and a friend really did do this thinking
it was great fun. Isn't it innocent until "proven" guilty?

Happy New Year all,

I think the mods should really take some action against such behaviour. It
is a spam for the list. Joke from a friend of a member, who manage to log in
as the member, and manage to post such thing to an email list is rather,
unacceptable.
Is like, i took my mum's credit card, and wne to get myself a new iphone,
then, i try to explain to the bank that, "oops, sorry, it is just meant to
be a joke for my mum"...
I think, such behaviour should be condam by the moderators, either looking
at, temporary ban or even permernant ban.
If, no action taken for such individual, how can we make sure than, members
on this list will treat each other with respect?
We are not talking about $0.99C worth of gift, we are talking about
potentially $99.95 worth of gift that, what, coming out as a "oops, sorry,
just a joke, for the spirit of the season, forgive me"?

It is not a matter of either other people see the need of such individual,
and willing to give it or not, it is the matter of, this particular
individual is fooling us around, and being somewhat disrespectful to the
guidelines, objectives, and to other members that is on the list, not to say
it is somewhat disrespectful to the list owners and moderators.

I think that this matter would be best dealt with by a moderator.

So far I've seen nothing but bashers and flamers flaming this person, and
while whether his request was appropriate on this list or not, I am sad to
say that the bashers and flamers will not be dealt with at all, and that is
very sad indeed.

This is Christmas, for those who celebrate it, yet people are giving this
person all kinds of grief for posting something that may or may not have
been appropriate. None of us lowly list members have the power to say,
unequivocally whether this person's post was appropriate or not, so I think
this thread should end until the moderators get back and handle it.

Either way, I believe it's a shame to have to come to my e-mail, and see
nothing but hatred being spewed on a list that is there for the sole purpose
of helping others out.

Merry Christmas, or what ever other holiday you happen to celebrate at this

Hello everyone,
I am not a moderator and I apologize if I am stepping over a line, but I
don't think I am, and I need to share this. We have had some fairly harsh
things to say about ram's request. I totally agree that it is not OK to ask
for a gift like the KNFB Reader from this list. However, let's step outside
of our own United States shoes and into someone else's for a moment. From
the name and the English usage, I am guessing that Ram may not be a native
English speaker and may be from another country and another culture where
asking for gifts from strangers may not have the bad connotations that it
does in the States. Also, in the States, we have a 60-75% unemployment rate
among blind people, depending on how you figure the stats. We know that we
have many blind people who have not had the opportunities to learn
independence, self-sufficiency, and the skill set that makes them empowered
in this world. Given all that, I would like to explain to Ram that I
understand his/her need for the KNFB Reader, but that we can't give it to
him/her and that it is not a good idea to ask. I would also like to explain
that I feel very sad that Ram and many of us, blind and sighted, don't have
what we need in this world. I send compassion and hope that Ram can find
resources to get what is needed. I also hope that we as a list change our
tone of responses.

I hope the above is not out of line. I deeply appreciate this list and the
info and help that you share. I have learned so much and have felt such a
part of a supportive community. Please let's think about saying no in a more
compassionate way.

Hi All,

Firstly, happy holidays to those who celebrate various end-of-year holidays
and joy also to those who do not. You all rock! :)

Now, you all sure love drama here! :) -And, for the record, I am posting on
this now as there is a bit of an outcry from several here for moderation.
I've been away from the list today so have not seen all this until now. I
will write a more appropriate and more complete and descriptive note quite
honestly, when I am actually awake. :)

I find it interesting that pretty much everyone knows this thread should end
but in fact, no one is simply not posting to it anymore. You all have the
power to end this topic yourselves. -Yes? I get it. You want to chime in
about something that is important to you. We all do from time to time. :)

However, if you desire silence, then be silent. If you desire respect, be
respectful.

If you need an official directive, then please all, close this topic
immediately.

Raul and I will deal with whatever aspects of this whole matter there are,
which need to be dealt with.

Please just bear with us a bit and be kind / respectful to each other *big
smile*

Talk with you soon and apologies for the list clutter.

Cheers!

availability of iPhone 6 and 6 plus

2014-12-26 Thread Vicky Collins
When checking the Apple Store app, it sure looks as if the iPhone 6 and 6 plus
are becoming more readily available. For, when checking here in the United
States with the app, it gives only one business day shipping time for the 64GB
plus, and one to 3 business days for the same size 6 models I checked. Strange,
though, as I don't yet see the unlocked models available here, and I thought
they used to start selling them before Christmas. Also, when checking the My
AT&T app, looks like they are already offering their certified like new models,
but online only.

I appreciate the refund from the seler and thanks to Richard for forwarding my
list note. I had not received a response to a message I wrote the producer
immediately after the order, so this is a good indication that a forward from a
list can sometimes help move things along.

Although I was able to finally move forward through the site after several
attempts, I had one unexpected occurrence of which others might be mindful.
Apparently the producer is offshore and the shipping charge is a full $10, even
for this lightweight device. I made my purchase through PayPal and, as far as I
could tell, this shipping charge is not identified prior to purchase. I
certainly could have missed it, but thought I was reviewing the pages
carefully. In the purchase process, there is an unidentified 10 Percent charge,
which is $3.00, which is added to the purchase price. It shows up as X3% on the
order page.

In the end, the total of $13.00 in additional charges might not have stopped my
purchase, but I would have wanted to know beforehand .

RE: The ScanJig

2014-12-26 Thread Richard Turner
It uses the room light first, but if the light is too dim, if you have the
flash set to automatic, it will work just fine.

I got 100 percent accuracy on what I had time to test.

I’m on vacation now until January 5. I’ve thought about going into the office
and bringing it home to test in different environments, but I’ve not taken that
step as yet.

If I do, I will certainly let folks know.

It is more likely that I won’t do any further testing until January.

I hope that helps,

Richard

Since the Scan Jig uses the light source from the iPhone or iPad, do you still
get accurate scans when using the Scan Jig? That's one of the advantage of the
StandScan Pro with the built-in LED lights. I am intrigued with the
construction of the Scan Jig and the ability to change the height on the
position of the iPhone. I would appreciate some feedback on the scan accuracy
before considering purchasing the product.

Thanks in advance.

Re: The ScanJig

2014-12-26 Thread Deb Lewis
What was a little disconcerting about this one though was that if you did make
a mistake and select the wrong country, the combo box would disappear and you
couldn’t correct it. the only saving grace is that the browser cleared the chat
if i closed it so I could start over, but I think the disappearance was the
only thing that really phased me for a while. I haven’t seen this one but
agreed with your assessment of the others, so I’m sure i’ll be more pleased
with this.

In my experience, you always tab out of a combo box to have it save your
selection.
Yes, some work with enter, but they always work when you tab out of it.

Once you find the correct country you must tab to leave the combo box.
Otherwise, you’ll select another country as you’ve pointed out. That was the
ultimate way after probably thirty attempts.
This is also available on Amazon but without the holiday discount so it will be
about $5 more. The secret though for both windows and mac is to tab out of that
combo box. And, you must select a country as someone else pointed out. Also in
the checkout you must select a state but that combo box works much better.

RE: The ScanJig

2014-12-26 Thread Richard Petty
An update. I received the following message from the ScanJig people:

“Richard Turner forwarded a question that you had posted about the calculation
of shipping costs for the ScanJig. I looked at the order you entered. The
shipping cost should be $6.00 to your location in Texas. It appears that you
may have selected another country during the checkout process. This resulted
in a $10.00 charge instead. We will refund the difference ($4.00) via PayPal.”

I appreciate the refund from the seler and thanks to Richard for forwarding my
list note. I had not received a response to a message I wrote the producer
immediately after the order, so this is a good indication that a forward from a
list can sometimes help move things along.

I have not seen the link on every word for a while now. Have you tried
dictionary.com app?
That is only an English dictionary, but works great for me.
Not to mention the built in dictionary.

Re: Using Apple cards

2014-12-26 Thread Alan J Paganelli
If you have iTunes gift cards, you can enter them all in one by one. The
vaule of each card is added in to your account. For example, say you had 4
25 dollar cards. When you enter in each card's numvers off the back, the
amount of that card is added to your iTunes account so if you entered in the
card codes for the 4 example cards from above, your iTunes ballance would be
$100. iTunes takes the money from your store credit first and only will hit
your credit card assuming you have one regestered with iTunes only after all
store credit has been used up. I'm hoping Santa brings me more iTunes gift
cards for Christmas. I love having store credit! Note: you cannot lose
store credit. If you had a hundred dollars store credit today and didn't
spend any of it in a year, you would still have a hundred dollars next year
at this time etc.

Hope this helps!

You have to redeem the cards one by one in order to purchase from it. In
other words, redeem the card then future purchases will be deducted from
your card balance. Then when you're low redeem the other etc etc.

Re: Any thoughts on better GPS app for learning a new neighborhood stores Blind Square or Seeing Eye?

2014-12-26 Thread Nancy Badger
I subscribed to Seeing Eye GPS for one month. So far, I am not very happy with
it. When I went on a route with my Owen M instructor, it did not read any of
the intersections. It did not describe them. I thought that was supposed to be
its strength. Not sure if it's the operator or the GPS.

RE: The ScanJig

2014-12-26 Thread Richard Petty

RE: anybody found an effective dictionary

2014-12-26 Thread Dean Martineau
Thanks, Andrew. I guess I should have specified that I'm looking for
dictionaries on the iPhone. Sighted users look up words effortlessly on mono-
or multi-lingual dictionaries, and I thus far haven't seen a way to do it.

Ultralingua only that tells voiceover not to say "clickable". This is how I
solved the problem.

Hope this helps.

Don't know if the paid and free versions are still there though. I saw one

Moderator Note -was- Re: unable to purchase knfb reader due to lack of money somebody gift me please!

2014-12-26 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi All,

Firstly, happy holidays to those who celebrate various end-of-year holidays and
joy also to those who do not. You all rock! :)

Now, you all sure love drama here! :) -And, for the record, I am posting on
this now as there is a bit of an outcry from several here for moderation. I've
been away from the list today so have not seen all this until now. I will write
a more appropriate and more complete and descriptive note quite honestly, when
I am actually awake. :)

I find it interesting that pretty much everyone knows this thread should end
but in fact, no one is simply not posting to it anymore. You all have the power
to end this topic yourselves. -Yes? I get it. You want to chime in about
something that is important to you.

Cheers!

Cara

2014-12-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Definitely some poor judgement here and all that. But what if a friend was over
and maybe your computer was on and your friend knew you were on this list and
they posted some stupid message as yourself, you would probably hope not to be
banned from this list. Anyhow, I guess it's time to drop it and move on. We
don't know anything about Ram, where he/she is from and for all I know he/she
is 18 years old and a friend really did do this thinking it was great fun.
Isn't it innocent until "proven" guilty?

Happy New Year all,
Sieghard

Re: Any thoughts on better GPS app for learning a new neighborhood stores Blind Square or Seeing Eye?

2014-12-26 Thread Feliciano G
I like the turn by turn directions that you get from seeing eye GPS. The
great thing about the application is that you can subscribe to the application
for a month before investing more on it. I personally thought BlindSquare was
better at look around details compared to the Seeing Eye GPS. Where to? is
also good.
