If you're using a device with only the resources to run one app at a time or a operating system that doesn't do much to manage resources then this is true. However this isn't true of the iPhone. The question is do you want to manage the memory and resources on your phone yourself or do you want to let the operating system do this for you. If you mail, text or phone a lot then leaving these apps open will mean they're easier to bring up since you only need to go into the App /Switcher and furthermore they'll load faster since they're already in the phones memory or cache. I use a smart phone, tablet or computer because I want them to do as much for me as they can, and that includes managing their own memory and processes. This is coming from a 4S user. I do clear out the App Switcher though when the phone starts acting flaky, and I will occasionally just pro actively go in there and unload some apps I know I won't be running any time soon. I don't choose to spend my time going into the App Switcher and unloading an app every time I finish using it. This is just my choice however, and I probably deal with some flakiness I could avoid otherwise. Apple did implement multi tasking in IOS though, so it should be taken advantage of. If apps needed to be closed when you were done using them then I'd think Apple would make it a bit easier to do that than having to go into the App Switcher to do it. anyone else tried tidal?
Hi, Tidal (a lossless streaming music service) was launched in nl here today, apparently it has been available for a few months in the usa and the uk. I tried it on the mac, no luck. On ios though it seems fairly accessible although i have not yet found out how you can add music to your own list and have it accessible in offline mode (although i can see how you can switch the mode on and off). The site seems to be accessible to register but now that i want to login to it again it does not go so well. First, let me say that I plan to do all my writing with this app from now on. It is simply the most powerful Word Processing app I've used on an iPhone. It will take some getting used to, but once you do, it is fantastic! Note, it does require iOS 8.1. It costs $9.99 and is available only in English in this first release. I recommend reading the help file that is included in the app. You can easily move or delete whole paragraphs or sentences. You can navigate your document by headings, paragraphs or sentences, of course also by word or character. It creates an outline as you go which is why it is then easy to navigate by those portions of text. It has a great spell checker that makes it incredibly easy to find and correct misspelled words. You can show or hide the outline with a gesture or with a toggle button on the screen. There are dedicated bluetooth keyboard commands. One of my favorite features is being able to set heading levels, bulleted lists, bold or italicize text and then export that to a word document so it maintains those formatting styles. Now, you can only open text files, not word files. But, if you do the bulk of your rough draft in Writer, then export it to Word .docx format to DropBox or example, you can then polish up your document on your computer and have your headings, bold, etc., maintained.. You can also export to Pages to then finish up on your Mac. I am not a Mac user so I cannot speak to how that works exactly. If you own Voice Dream Reader and update to version 3.40 of the Reader and run it once, all your voices from Voice Dream Reader will be available to you in Writer. I highly recommend this app! Here is the description from the app store. Description Voice Dream Writer helps everyone write better: Text-to-speech proofreading reduces mistakes, phonetic and meaning search help you find the right words, and an active outline improves the structure of your writing. Text-To-Speech Proofreading. Professional proofreaders recommend reading out loud as the best way to catch mistakes. Like a personal proofreader, Voice Dream Writer reads your writing using text-to-speech, so you can easily spot awkward sentences, grammatical errors and typos. Also, it can read words and sentences as you type or voice dictate. This way, you can type faster because you no longer have to look up to check the text you just wrote. Word Finder. Voice Dream Writer helps you find the right words using phonetic search and meaning search. For example, search for inuf phonetically, and you will find enough, and search for Fast Africa Cat by meaning and you will find Cheetah. Word Finder also shows you the dictionary definition of a word as you type without you having to select anything or open another program. Outline. As you write, Voice Dream Writer automatically creates an outline of headings, paragraphs and sentences. The Outline helps you structure your document better by giving you an always-on overview. You can also quickly navigate to a section in a long document without endless scrolling. Finally, you can drag and drop elements in the Outline to organize your writing. No more selecting, cutting and

I Tunes
I'm trying to make playlists from ITunes on my computer that I want to sync to my iPhone. A tech was remotely controlling my computer this morning through Jaws and it appeared what we wanted to copy was indeed on the phone. In fact, it looked like we unchecked something we had already checked and it did remove it from the phone. Now There is nowhere on the phone where I can find those files which I presumed transferred over. When I hit on Deidre's iPhone in ITunes on the computer it appears that what we wanted to go to the phone is there. Is it possible it has not downloaded yet? I went to the Music App and I Tunes App on the phone and see nowhere where my personal playlists would show. I found a tab in one of those apps that said Downloads and it was empty. Below is something a viphone lister said but I can't seem to see how to do this For one thing there are different screens in ITunes on the computer I think, and Jaws often does not read what is there. There are also things that say Deidre's I phone read only then another place where it simply says deidre's I phone and that seems to be the one where you can see things, as well as in a tree view of all my music. Is this a setting issue? Nothing on the phone in the Music or I Tunes U settings is off that might be causing problems. I can't say yet what specifically is the key in doing this kind of copying from the computer with the phone plugged in. Tom wrote: go to your music through windows explorer and control c to copy, then go to iTunes and when you are looking at your playlist, hit control v and it will add it to your playlist and to the mail music library. In fact, my wife has a folder on her computer that contains all of the songs she wants on her phone, and I can select them all ( control A), copy them (control c), then paste them (control v) to her playlist in iTunes. It will not duplicate the songs she already has in there, since the path is the same. Re: BBC IPlayer App Available in the US?
The short answer is no, and no. The long answer is that when you're in the UK, you could use the address you're staying at as your address when signing up for an account in the UK App Store. You will also need an email address not currently associated with any Apple ID. You'll then be able to download iPlayer and use it in the UK. When you get home, iPlayer won't work, unless you circumvent the geo-blocking technology that prevents users from outside the UK accessing the service. All of this is explained step-by-step in my book, Imagine There's No Countries. RE: update about Voice Dream Writer
Hi, I also asked Winston if he would look at another issue. I will be using this app for my class outlines. So, I will listen to outline segments with an ear plug and then expand on what I want to talk about. The problem for me is that voiceover hints are always spoken after the portion of text is read even if you have hints turned off in VoiceOver. This totally interrupts my train of thought, although I did find a way to silence them each time if using a Bluetooth keyboard by pressing control. He said that in the table he was using to generate the code, the hints were the default, but he will see if he can find a work around. I hope so. By the way, I only had to wait about 10 minutes for a response from him. I’m not saying it will always be this way, but he is obviously interested in making his apps work as well as they can. Re: Voice Dream Writer Review and Description
I don't think so. Some implementations of Markdown support making tables, and you could use that to justify/center, but I have no idea if VDW supports that or not. On Jan 22, 2015, at 8:40 PM, Gmail englishride...@gmail.com wrote: Alex, thank you so much for your quick reference for Markdown. It's really appreciated. I have a few more questions. Does markdown support adjusting font sizes? Also, can you Color parts of your text with it? Can you center, left align, or right align text? Thanks, Ari On Jan 22, 2015, at 4:56 PM, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com mailto:mehg...@icloud.com wrote: Yes, it's really easy. There are plenty of articles online, but here's the text of a primer I wrote on the topic last year. It's not complete, but it covers the basics. Quick Reference for Markdown Syntax Markdown is a quick, very easy way to write properly formatted HTMl without actually using HTML. It can'd do everything, but it can do the basics. The following is not a complete list - Google has those. This will, however, get you by. #Headings A heading is denoted by the number sign (also called the pound sign or hash sign). As many signs as you add is the heading level. For instance: #heading level 1 ##heading level 2 #heading level 5 This goes up to heading 6. You may end the line with the same number of signs, but you don't need to, so I never bother. #Links Here's the syntax for a link [text of the link](www.example.com http://www.example.com/ link title) The title part is optional - it is what appears when you hover over a link. If you use it, it must be in quotes. Note that links can be on a separate line in the Markdown, but they will appear in-line in the rendered text. This makes it easier since you can put links with longer URLs on their own lines. You can also use reference links: [link text][id] Then, somewhere else in your document, you define that id: [id]:www.example.com http://www.example.com/ You can do as many of these as you want, but each definition must be on its own line. This is handy for when you have a bunch of long URLs and don't want to clutter your document, or if you link to the same URL several times. #Lists ##Unordered To make an unordered list, leave a blank line before you start, then put each list item on a line preceded by a dash, plus, or asterisk (I use asterisks). For instance, this will not be a list because I didn't leave a blank line before it: * item 1 * item2 This, though, will be, since there is a blank line: * item1 * item2 A list ends when a new line contains something other than a list item marker symbol. Please note that you must leave a space between the marker and the text of each list item. ##Ordered Ordered lists obey the same rules as unordered ones. The only difference is that you mark each item with a number followed by a period, then a space, instead of a symbol. These numbers need not be sequential at all; you could use a 1 for each item if you wanted, and the list would still be numbered properly in the rendered HTML. Here's an ordered list: 1. item1 2. item2 1. item3 55. item4 ##Sublists Indent a new list four spaces, or one tab, and it becomes a sublist. You do not need a blank line before the sublist begins. * list1 item1 * list1 item2 * sublist1 item 1 * sublist 1 item2 * list1 item 3 *sublist2 item1 #Text Decoration To bold something, surround it with asterisks, *like this*. Underlining is underscores, _like this_. Italics is a double start, **like this**. #Notes To put in an actual star or other reserved character, escape it. *this* will bold this, while \*this\* will make actual asterisks appear. The backslash tells the interpreter to ignore the character. If you were to render this documentt right now, all the examples would be translated. If you wanted to keep the syntax for, say, a link, you would write: \[AppleVis](http://www.applevis.com http://www.applevis.com/) That should work; escaping that first bracket should nullify the whole thing. If not, just escape more symbols. On Jan 22, 2015, at 7:34 PM, Gmail englishride...@gmail.com mailto:englishride...@gmail.com wrote: Where is a good place to learn this markdown stuff? Would Voice Dream Reader or Writer be better to read answers to questions to a group, and how do I get these into the app?
Hi. I have just started a Bible study. I am working on questions which the group and I answer during the study. I am required to read some of these in the group. I am wondering two things. First, which app would be better to read my answers? I'm leaning towards Voice Dream Reader, but if Writer would be better for this I'm willing to use it. Second, how do I get the plain text file into the program? I know that probably the easiest way is with Dropbox. I have it on my Windows PC, and I know how to move a file to the Dropbox folder. What I don't know is how to get it into the app I'm using. I just downloaded the Dropbox app, and I'm not even sure if I need it or not. I'm new to Dropbox on the iPhone, so I'd appreciate step by step directions on what to do. Thanks in advance for help. Re: update about Voice Dream Writer
Great use for the app and a great catch. Winston is one of the most responsive developers I've come across. No, it won't always be that fast that he responds, but he seldom takes more than a day or two. Though, he is rather busy, I know he tries to reply to all Emails. But, if you do the bulk of your rough draft in Writer, then export it to Word .docx format to DropBox or example, you can then polish up your document on your computerand have your headings, bold, etc., maintained.. Hi. Sometimes the best way to figure something out is to do it yourself, which is what I decided to do. I have my Bible Study lesson in Voice Dream Reader, and it works pretty well. The only thing I don't like is it's hard to get the file to go back to the beginning. I finally got it there, and I won't worry about it until Monday night when I'm with the group. This is going to work well for me. Voice Dream Reader works great! Thanks to my Girlfriend for recommending it to me. Have a good day, and don't work too hard. Re: Voice Dream Writer Review and Description
Yes, it's really easy. #Links Here's the syntax for a link [text of the link](www.example.com link title) The title part is optional - it is what appears when you hover over a link. If you use it, it must be in quotes. Note that links can be on a separate line in the Markdown, but they will appear in-line in the rendered text. This makes it easier since you can put links with longer URLs on their own lines. You can also use reference links: [link text][id] Then, somewhere else in your document, you define that id: [id]:www.example.com You can do as many of these as you want, but each definition must be on its own line. If you wanted to keep the syntax for, say, a link, you would write: \[AppleVis](http://www.applevis.com) That should work; escaping that first bracket should nullify the whole thing. If not, just escape more symbols. On Jan 22, 2015, at 7:34 PM, Gmail englishride...@gmail.com wrote: Where is a good place to learn this markdown stuff? Re: Voice Dream Writer Review and Description
Here is the section from the help file that is a brief introduction to what he has included in the Writer app. I hope this helps. Formatting Voice Dream Writer supports a subset of Markdown, a quick way to format the text in your document on a mobile device without any of the complications of a full-blown Word Processor. Supported Markdown syntax: • Headings. Use # (number sign) at the beginning of a paragraph for Headings. Number of # (number signs) is the heading level. These acts are markers that allow you to navigate the document easily using the Outline. VoiceOver users can jump to these markers using the cursor tool. When you export as a Word document, for example, these become styled as headings. • Lists. (minus sign) at the beginning of a paragraph to denote a bulleted list, and a number followed by a period and a space denote a numbered list. If you'll ultiamtely export the document to HTML, RTF or Word, the numbers will be generate in the right sequence. • Italics. Surround a word or phrase with asterisk to italicize it. • Bold. Surround a word or phrase with 2 asterisks to bold it. Reality is the leading cause of stress for those who are in touch with it. Re: Voice Dream Writer Review and Description
Alex, thank you so much for your quick reference for Markdown. It's really appreciated. I have a few more questions. Does markdown support adjusting font sizes? Also, can you Color parts of your text with it? Can you center, left align, or right align text? Thanks, Ari On Jan 22, 2015, at 4:56 PM, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com wrote: Yes, it's really easy. RE: Reading iOs Access for All on iBooks
Thanks for the replies. I figured I should check if I had the book on my computer which I did since I think I purchased it using iTunes on my PC. the book was located in my iTunes\iTunes Media\Books\Shelly Brisbin folder and as Shelly stated, it is an unprotected ePub book with an epub file extension. I went into file sharing under iTunes, placed focus on Voice Dream Reader, and executed the add button and browsed to that folder to add the book to voice Dream. RE: Reading iOs Access for All on iBooks
Shelly, Thanks so much for your reply and for your outstanding book. I'm feeling a bit thick because I can't figure out how to get the book into Voice Dream Reader. The underlying file is obviously available to iBooks since I bought it in the iTunes Apps Store but iBooks is not one of the options that pops up in Voice Dream when adding content. Do I need to go into iTunes, find your book epub file in the files section of iTunes, and then copy it to my computer so I can then add it to Voice Dream?

Can I Read an iBook Using VO with a Locked Screen?
Hello Listers, I've gotten spoiled to reading with a locked screen in the BARD Mobile, Audible, and Voice Dream Reader apps. I Tried locking my screen when reading the iOS Access for All iBook with the iBooks app but VoiceOver immediately stopped playing when I did this. I can't find a setting that allows reading from a locked screen and I can only assume that iBooks is primarily designed for sighted users to read with which can only be done with the screen displayed. Does anyone know if it's possible to continuously read an iBook with VoiceOver and lock the screen while doing so in order to preserve battery life? I'm running iOS 8.1.2 on an iPhone 5. Thanks in advance for any help. Alan Lemly -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Re: Can I Read an iBook Using VO with a Locked Screen?
Hi Alan, this trick only works with audio or self-voicing apps, since VO is disabled when the screen is locked. So sadly it's not possible to read an iBook with the screen locked. If Apple ever implements a read out loud feature outside of VoiceOver, this would then allow you to do what you want, but given Amazon's battle with the publishers over such a feature, they may not be keen to go there. Pasting a text using the Apple keyboard
Hi. I've got a friend who is trying to [paste a message after it has been selected and copied. She can go to the edit option using the roter settings but she can't find the copy or paste option. What keeps coming up are the typing mode options. Like touch typing, standard typing but not the paste option. What does she have to do to get rid of the various typing modes after the edit option when using the roter options. Thanks. RE: Pasting a text using the Apple keyboard
If she is getting the typing mode options she isn't on edit but still on typing mode. She just needs to be careful when moving on the rotor to not go passed edit to typing mode. But, if she is using a keyboard, Command+v will paste the text. Re: Writer and voices
Just double tap the start proofreading button and it will read it out to you using the voice set in audio settings. You are supposed to be able to use the voices from Voice Dream Reader but a bug prevents this from working and will only use the stock iOS voices, both default and enhanced quality. An update due for release next week should fix this and other bugs present in this initial release. For now though, what a great start to the app in my opinion. Everything works well apart from those bugs at my end.
