My First Experience Using Apple Pay

2015-02-02 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Today, I decided to use Apple Pay via the Passbook app on my 6 Plus.

One of the companies that has already signed onto the Apple Pay train, as it
were, is Panera Bread, a fast-casual restaurant that just happens to be one
of my most favorites as, in my opinion, their coffee is second to none.

So, before going to the restaurant, I opened up the Passbook app and elected
to use the credit card already on file with Apple. Part of this process
includes verifying the use of the card, with the Passbook app, itself.

In my case, I was given two methods of verifying the card. I could (1)
download a company-branded wallet app or (2) call the credit card company
and verify my information with a representative.

As I am an app minimalist, I decided to call the company. After authorizing
Passbook with the credit card company, I received a notification on the
phone that the credit card had been authorized and was now ready for use
with Passbook.

Two more things to note:
1.
I have Passbook setup for use via cell signal and
2.
I have authorized Touch ID for use with the Passbook app.

After doing all of this. I went into the restaurant and ordered some coffee.

After the cashier rang up my order, with the phone locked and the display
off, I simply placed my finger on the Touch ID/Home button and waved the
phone just above The transaction terminal (where a sighted person would
swipe a credit card and/or sign her/his name. As I did this, as the phone
passed over the terminal, the screen came on displaying the passbook app.
At approximately the same time, the phone vibrated once and the transaction
was complete. It took less than 5 seconds from the time I placed my finger
on the Touch ID/home button while passing the phone over the terminal to
when the vibration was felt.

Very, very, very impressive, to say the least.

I only hope more businesses will begin using Apple Pay.

Please note that I have no store-specific apps installed on my 6 Plus.

Mark

This is the exact same advice I and others have been recommending for
years with respect to lithium ion batteries. Googling for information
on lithium ion batteries turns up this advice time and time again.
Lithium ion batteries do not suffer from the same memory affect as
NiCad batteries. It's this memory affect that makes it sound advice
to use up all of the charge in a NiCad battery before recharging it.
You definitely don't want to do the same thing with lithium ion
 batteries.

Note that you may still want to zero your battery to reset the
battery indicator. I don't consider this advice to be contrary to the
 advice in the article below.

Finally, this talks about optimum use. I would not be a slave to the
advice below. I do follow this advice when it's convenient, but if
I'm out and about, and I don't have the ability to top off my iPhone,
I'll still use it because that's why I have it.

extension cord to work with iphone docking station

2015-02-02 Thread Tara Prakash
Dear all. I am looking for something that connects my iphone with my
docking station in a way that I can leave my phone on the table with
it connected with the docking station. I don't want to leave it on the
docking station. So, I am looking for a cord one side of which goes in
to iphone or ipod and the other side connects with the dock. I am sure
there are cables for it but not sure what to search for. Lightening to
lightening? I will appreciate the solution.

Re: The new Outlook app for IOS, anyone

2015-02-02 Thread Brett
Hi, I rather like it. So far it seems faster than the default app to sort mail.

I don't, probably like many here, have time to read every message. With
outlook, you can double tap and hold, then slide right to get in to multi
selection mode. You can then scrol through your list of mail and double tap the
ones you want to select. After this is done, you can batch move or delete them.
In my opinion, this is a huge time saver.

To only show unread messages, first tap the Filter button, then choose unread.

Hope this helps.
Brett.

Re: The new Outlook app for IOS, anyone

2015-02-02 Thread Richard Turner
I just took a look at it using my work iPhone since we use Exchange.
1. There is no indication of a message being read or unread, forwarded or
replied to like there is in the native mail app.
2. The people list seems to only include recent contacts, so only those people
whom you have exchanged Emails with recently, whatever they mean by recent.
Just based on those two things, I won't be using this app.

Facebook Notifications

2015-02-02 Thread Lynda Ingraham
Hi Everyone,

We are having a really bad day with facebook notifications. Is there a way
to turn off all notifications? If I want to know what everyone is up to, I
will go in and check. Between the invitations to play games and alerts to
newly posted pictures, I have had just about enough today. There must have
been ten interruptions while we were reading an NLS book on our Ipad.

Sorry if I sound overly grumpy about the notifications. Just frustrated with
constant interruptions.

If someone could please tell me how to permanently turn off notifications
for facebook, I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks in advance,

Lynda

Re: Microphone to record stereo

2015-02-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I can understand where a message like try Googling for it or it's in the
manual can be kind of put offing, but sometimes that is the best answer.
People on lists are going to answer questions based on what they know.
For example, when people ask how much something costs, people are going
to know what they've paid for it, which may not be the same as what you
can get it for now. When people ask for where to go to get a list of
bluetooth keyboard commands for VoiceOver, I just Google it myself and
paste the link into my message. There's no reason the person asking the
question couldn't perform the same search I did, and they'd get the
answer a lot quicker. I'm not saing people shouldn't ask questions, and
people definitely shouldn't be dismissive, but I don't think pointing to
Google, AppleVis.com or other sources isn't a good answer.

On 02/02/2015 05:09 PM, Neal Ewers wrote:

Actually, I mentioned two different places that had it later in this very
thread. Yes, I could have given their web sites had I had them at my
fingertips, but I get around 300 messages a day and didn't have the time. Sorry
about that. I figured since I did mention the two sites that it would be just
as easy for someone to find the links as it would be for me to look them up for
you. So, considering that many on this list are very busy and yet willingly
offer such time as we have, the information we provide may need further
investigation by the person who is wanting the information.

Sweetwater and B&H photo are the places mentioned below. I'm happy if that
keeps you from having to read to the end of the thread to find them.

Then why should we have this list for asking questions on products.
Or whatever is asked doubt on it.
Then why then don't we just Google everything and that would save the list mods
A hole lot of work.
You know if you are going to tell people to just Google it then why reply I
know I can do that but I guess we are not supposed to ask questions on the list
about anything.

Here is a snip from the Zoom site. It does talk about the spacer.

Begin Snip.

X/Y Stereo for Versatility and Realism

The iQ6 features two high quality unidirectional condenser
microphones in an X/Y configuration the same ones used in our
world-famous H4n Handy Recorder. X/Y stereo recording is a great way
to cover a wide area while still capturing sound sources in the center with
clarity and definition.
You can even change the mic angle from 90 degrees for a tightly
focused image to 120 degrees for immersive wide-angle stereo. (US
Patent

Microphone In, Headphone Out

The iQ6's large analog-type MIC GAIN wheel and three-segment level
LEDs ensure that you'll always get great audio in every environment
from quiet meetings to loud concerts with crystal clarity and no
signal overload. The iQ6's dedicated headphone jack which doubles
as a line output enables direct monitoring during both recording and playback.

Extended Connector, Removable Spacer

The iQ6 comes with an extended Lightning connector and removable
spacer that allows it to be used with most iPhone, iPad and iPod
cases. Simply plug your iQ6 in and start making great-sounding stereo
recordings!

* Some cases might prevent connection even when the case adjuster is
removed.

The Zoom Handy Recorder App

Zoom's Handy Recorder app, available for free from the iTunes App
Store, provides a wealth of tools for your iQ6 and iOS device. In
addition to offering onscreen level metering, it enables you to set
the iQ6 headphone volume, as well as adding an automatic recording
function handy for capturing the sound of meetings, speeches, and
other situations where you don't want to miss a thing. Choose linear
PCM format for the highest quality sound or AAC format to conserve
storage space, then apply compression, EQ and reverb effects to your recordings.
Handy Recorder even allows you to email your files to friends and to
upload them to SoundCloud for sharing with the world.

End snip.

I have also read that the microphone will work with other apps as well.
I don t believe the HandiRec app will export to DropBox, but I may
be wrong about this. I have lately fallen in love with AudioMemos,
but I also have a number of other recording apps as well.

True, the home button works just fine if the phone is in your hand but if it's
in a pocket or on your belt, it isn't ideal. It would be nice to be able to
activate Siri via the talk button on the headset. For the most part, that's
what folks usually do but currently not doable for us unless VO is turned off.
It sounds like maybe an Apple issue because it works fine with VO off. Think
I'll drop Apple Accessibility an email on this.

RE: Microphone to record stereo

2015-02-02 Thread Neal Ewers

The new Outlook app for IOS, anyone

I'm playing around with the new Outlook app for IOS. Can anyone let me know
if there is a way to import my contacts? When I go into "People" I only get
the very recent contacts. Unless I am doing something wrong, I just hate
having to write in all e-mail addresses.

Finally had a reason to use Be My Eyes. I wasn’t sure what temperature the

Seems to be getting more popular, because there are now 112,000 sighted users

On 2/2/2015 11:40 AM, Neal Ewers wrote:

Here is a snip from the Zoom site. It does talk about the spacer.

Begin Snip.

X/Y Stereo for Versatility and Realism

The iQ6 features two high quality unidirectional condenser microphones
in an X/Y configuration—the same ones used in our world-famous H4n Handy
Recorder. X/Y stereo recording is a great way to cover a wide area while
still capturing sound sources in the center with clarity and definition.
You can even change the mic angle from 90 degrees for a tightly focused
image to 120 degrees for immersive wide-angle stereo. (US Patent
8184815)

Microphone In, Headphone Out

The iQ6's large analog-type MIC GAIN wheel and three-segment level LEDs
ensure that you'll always get great audio in every environment — from
quiet meetings to loud concerts— with crystal clarity and no signal
overload. The iQ6's dedicated headphone jack —which doubles as a line
output— enables direct monitoring during both recording and playback.

Extended Connector, Removable Spacer

The iQ6 comes with an extended Lightning connector and removable spacer
that allows it to be used with most iPhone, iPad and iPod cases. Simply
plug your iQ6 in and start making great-sounding stereo recordings!

* Some cases might prevent connection even when the case adjuster is
removed.

The Zoom Handy Recorder App

Zoom's Handy Recorder app, available for free from the iTunes App Store,
provides a wealth of tools for your iQ6 and iOS device. In addition to
offering onscreen level metering, it enables you to set the iQ6
headphone volume, as well as adding an automatic recording
function—handy for capturing the sound of meetings, speeches, and other
situations where you don't want to miss a thing. Choose linear PCM
format for the highest quality sound or AAC format to conserve storage
space, then apply compression, EQ and reverb effects to your recordings.
Handy Recorder even allows you to email your files to friends and to
upload them to SoundCloud for sharing with the world.

End snip.

I have also read that the microphone will work with other apps as well.
I don’t believe the HandiRec app will export to DropBox, but I may be
wrong about this. I have lately fallen in love with AudioMemos, but I
also have a number of other recording apps as well.

Fanus. There is an app made specificly for the microphone it is called
HandiRec. However, if the controls on the microphone allow you to do the
adjustment from the microphone, you can likely use any app you already
have. I won’t know this until mine comes. I’m checking on the spacer
that was talked about for making it work with cases. B&h are the only
people who talk about this, and Sweetwater seems not to know about it.
So, I don’t know if it is something B&H makes or if it comes with the
Microphone. I think I will call B&H and find out.

Neal,

It is odd that they would post something on their web site that their support

Hi Neal and all. I have the IQ5 and have streamed all kinds of events live with
it. It's not bad although wind resistance is very poor. Still the sound is
excellent.
I was curious about what the differences between IQ5 and IQ6 are, and I found
this excellent review on iLounge, whose reviews I have come to respect for
being thorough. Hopefully others will find this helpful.

RE: How accessible is utube?

2015-02-02 Thread Deidre Muccio
Thanks Cara for being so systematic in your description. I think I'll look
for the native app because what you describe would drive me crazy! Luckily
the premium version of Spotify hasn't done any such annoying thing, as of
yet!

Subject: Re: How accessible is utube?

HI Deidre,

The reasons that YouPlayer has such a low rating are these.

For those of us who have had this app for a while, there was the opportunity
to pay for an add-free version.

Some, such as myself did that. This was fine for a while until the
developers basically said now you need to either purchase the premium
version or the app would randomly (or about twenty seconds into some videos)
exit and bring up the App Store app on the phone and drop you at a random
page. This was based on ads in the YouPlayer app but unlike normal iAds,
this required no action from the user. So basically you would be watching a
video and the app would randomly quit and the App Store would come up to a
completely unrelated app.

Needless to say, this could be infuriating when one could simply just not
watch a video because the app would just keep quitting again and again even
after the ad-free version had been purchased.

Lastly, when one then purchased the 'premium' version of YouPlayer, to make
these ads go away yet again, now the app sometimes stops playback in the
middle of videos and restarts the video you are listening to from the
beginning.

So For those of us who have had to purchase this app basically twice, we now
get a version that is unstable and restarts videos with no warning /
work-arounds.

This video restart issue may not seem like much but in long videos you can
imagine how annoying it can be.

Sorry for the long note but I just wanted to be thorough. :)

Have a great day!

RE: Podcast episode on how people's expectations affect what blind people can do

2015-02-02 Thread Deidre Muccio
You can also go to your Podcast or Downcast App and hit on the Feature Tab
and find it listed there as NPR: Invisibilia. The episode Eric mentioned is
called "How To Become Batman" with a 9 minute follow-up segment called
"Falling Off a Cliff." These particular podcasts aired over radio (not
strictly part of This American Life) gained such popularity that they have
aired over and over again. There are other podcasts in this new radio series
that I also feel are well worth listening to.' I note that Eric included a
link to the specific podcast that features a very unusual blind individual.
He is not introduced until a ways into the program. Deidre

Hello all,

A friend told me about an episode of the This American Life podcast entitled
Batman, which describes the experiences of a blind man and how he learned to
see the world. I found it very relatable and interesting, and think many
here would enjoy it. I was a little unsure what to make of it for the first
ten minutes or so, but by the end was really quite moved.

I tried switching to French and it worked fine. I should add that, since I did

Burther, as long as the default language was selected when I started the test,
the feedback I got was in French.
Maybe try starting the phone again or other reset

Re: Voice Mail

2015-02-02 Thread Shai
Hello Dulce,
Have you attempted to restart your phone by powering down and turning
it back on? I would also attempt to turn cellular data off and on
through settings/cellular. If this still doesn't remedy your problem,
I would call your carrier.
I actually had a similar issue last week on an iPhone5s and ended up
converting my cellular voice mail to Google Voice. That may be
something to explore if you are still experiencing problems and you
are in the US.

Re: KNFB Reader, sorry

2015-02-02 Thread Wayne Merritt
If you still have your email receipt from Appple, there is a refund
link in that receipt which will take you to the form to ask for a
refund. Not sure how long ago you bought the app but you might could
still get a refund. I've done it before for another app and got a
refund a few minutes after submitting the form.

You have to enable full screen mode and at the bottom of the screen, you'll see
the play/pause, scan back and scan forwardt buttons. It would be more
convenient to be able to do this without having to enable full screen mode, but
alas, that's how it is for this app.

RE: Voice Dream Reader iOS App

2015-02-02 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

I have been using it for a while and it really is great. It is not, as you
say, a little pricy, it is cheap for what it does. Its worth saving
elsewhere and getting that one. Irf I remember right, I paid close to
double that price and didn't regret it.

Re: [New post] What's the optimum way to charge your iPhone?

2015-02-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Here's one of many articles that talks about performing shallow charges
on your lithium ion battery for maximal use
http://www.howtogeek.com/169669/debunking-battery-life-myths-for-mobile-phones-tablets-and-laptops/

I did a Google search on "lithium ion battery care" and got hits from
sources like ZDNet, CNet, Life Hacker, Arstechnica, Gismodo,
Techrepublic, Apple, Battery University and so on. All of which say
basically the same thing. Not every article touches on every point
though. Not all mention the shallow charges or go into charge cycles or
talk about resetting the battery indicator, but if you read a handful of
these articles you'll get the picture.

Re: [New post] What’s the optimum way to charge your iPhone?

2015-02-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The question is whether it's a good idea to let your battery run down to
0% before recharging it. I think the answer is that it's OK but not optimal.

You absolutely definitely do not want to run your lithium ion battery
down completely. This will cause irreversible damage. Your phone and the
battery itself will shutdown before the battery is completely
discharged. If you're going to store your battery for any length of
time, you want it to have at least a 50% charge on it. This will keep it
from running all the way down while it's not in use. Of course this
depends on how long you'll be storing your battery. Lithium ion
batteries want to be used.

Remember, this debate is over optimal use, so we're not talking about
right or wrong here. People should use their phone in the way that suits
their lives and not cater to their phones battery. The phone and the
battery have electronics in it to keep it from running all the way down
and to trickle charge it once it gets close to full. This will keep any
damage from occurring to your battery. Keep it from getting too hot and
just use it any way you want!

Well, each person can do their own research and use their battery any
way they like. If you want to trust the opinion of one person or base
your decision on anecdotal evidence then that's your choice, and it's
not a bad one or a wrong one.

For those that want to do a bit of reading and your own research, I'd
suggest Googling on lithium ion batteries, how they work and how best to
care for them. One good resource is Apple itself and here's just one
article on Apple's web site regarding their batteries
http://www.apple.com/batteries/why-lithium-ion/

Remember that lithium ion batteries are different and use different
chemistry than NiCad batteries, so they don't suffer from the memory
affect of NiCad batteries and consequently you would use your LI
differently than you would your NiCad battery to optimize performance.
Most of the inaccurate advice I hear around LI batteries comes from what
people were told to do with rechargeable NiCad batteries.

Ultimately though, your battery works for you and not the other way
around. It's meant to be used. Remember, these tips are just to get
optimal performance with your LI battery. That doesn't mean if you don't
follow them you'll notice an immediate and serious impact on your
battery's performance.

I'm not sure we need to continue this debate on the list anymore. People
have decided to use their battery the way they're going to use it, and
it doesn't look like continuing to share information is going to do any
more but just cause people to get more entrenched into their own
opinion, myself included.

ios update? With some people i cant seem to accept incoming facetime calls,

Very strange.

2015-02-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Having done the update to iOS 8.1.3, when I switch the onscreen keyboard to
French, it no longer switches the voice to French, nor does the Braille switch
to French Braille.

In the Settings, the only Braille options I have are UEB, US and UK, even when
I switch the onscreen keyboard to French. This is maddening! Is anyone else
seeing this?

Cheers,

Anne

More on iTunes 12.1

2015-02-02 Thread Judy Holloway
Hi. I just discovered that JAWS 16 will not read the buttons in iTunes 12.1
correctly, but NVDA will. So the radio tuner works with NVDA, not JAWS 16. I
hope this is helpful to some.

Thanks.

Voice Dream Reader iOS App

2015-02-02 Thread Angelvoice
Hi, all.

I just ran across this iOS app and it looks very good. Has anyone used it?
It's a bit pricy at $10.00 but if it's a good app, it's worth it.

There is also a companion app called Voice Dream Writer that is also
$10.00. Here is the link for the Voice Dream Reader app description:
