A Virtual Reward Card On Your iPhone 6 Plus, Be Careful Who You Hand It To

2015-02-21 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I am absolutely in love with the Passbook App and Apple Pay feature on my
iPhone 6 Plus.

The number of brick & mortar stores in my area that accept Apple Pay
transactions via the NFC protocol is relatively high. As a result, I find
myself using my iPhone to make purchases at least once a week, sometimes
even more.

The one thing I would like to see added to the Passbook app is the ability
to quickly and easily add store reward cards without first having to install
a store-specific app.

Now I am well aware of the fact that there are a growing number of
third-party apps and websites that will facilitate the creation of a
passbook pass, however, given the recent data security breeches across the
web, I am reluctant to give out any private purchasing information to
third-party, and as far as I am concerned, unvetted entities.

Given my recent success with Passbook, I have been considering virtualizing
all of my store-specific reward cards by installing an app such as KeyRing
or Stocards.

Using such an app would allow me to quickly display the virtual card on my
phone's display allowing it to be scanned at the time of purchase.

I was planning on downloading a few such apps this evening when, earlier
today, while in a brick & mortar store, I witnessed a customer hand her
iPhone 6 Plus, with a virtual reward card displayed on the screen, to a
store employee in order for the employee to scan the bar code.

To everyone's surprise, the employee dropped the iPhone. Because of a
convergence of circumstances, the phone landed on the floor. Not good. The
customer was, to put it mildly, furious.

After having seen this, I'm not certain if I want to use virtual store
reward cards if doing so means that I must first hand my device to a store
employee.

A virtual reward card on your iPhone 6 Plus, be careful who you hand it to.

Mark

Re: Contacting A Moderator

2015-02-21 Thread RobH.
It is more normal for a list moderator to respond to the listname-owner@
address, but this is specifically ignored by the mods here. This is the bit
I think is wrong, or less than right so to speak.

Did you ask the moderator directly or on the list?

I did a spot check of the lists I'm on, and I don't see a moderator's
email address in the footer of any of the messages I checked. I don't
include my email address in the footer of any of the lists I moderate or
own. I can't speak for the moderator of this list, but this doesn't seem
to be a standard or common practice.

I know there are people who don't want to follow links, but there is a
contact the owner link on the Google Groups page for this list which you
can get to by following the link in the footer of each message. I'm not
sure I've used it, so I'm not sure if it's set up correctly or not.

Re: Talking atlas for iPad

2015-02-21 Thread RobH.
Several have asked this, including me. And no, none of us want to pay that
much until someone says it works as well as they say on the site, and even
on Applevis where the link first showed up. So we're all looking for a
volunteer with £30 to spare for trying this product.
Pity we couldn't all gift a proportion of the cost to a volunteer to try it
and report back publically. I've not tried gifting to know how much control
of amount one has; but if ten of us sent £3/$5 each, it would be worth that
to know the answer maybe?

Hello all,
I got a new laptop and after installing iTunes, I proceeded to sync and
backup my phone.
Everything went well, but I noticed that the music I currently have on my
phone did not sync into iTunes.
I found this out by trying to look at my music in iTunes.

Now iTunes told me that my phone had been synced with another computer, and
gave the name of my old laptop, it then said that if I wanted to sync my
music with this iTunes, then I could but it would erase all of the music on
my phone.
My question is, is there a way of adding the music I have on my phone to the
iTunes on my new laptop?

Now I will say that the music on my phone is mp3 files I put on there
myself, and not music I bought from iTunes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

is the new iOS for iPhones a bit more usable?

2015-02-21 Thread Eric Oyen
hello group,

I have been reading around and it appears that there is a security flaw in
previous versions of iOS (7 and 8 - versions up to 8.1.12). So, my question is
this, should I finally upgrade my iPhone 5 to the new iOS? How many of the
voiceover issues have been resolved?

any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.

That's very strange. I'm not experiencing any crashes with FB. I must be lucky.

Re: A Virtual Reward Card On Your iPhone 6 Plus, Be Careful Who You Hand It To

2015-02-21 Thread Chris Chaffin
I could be wrong, but isn't the device the clerk uses to scan your rewards card
on a cord? Could you not just hold your phone out toward the clerk face up and
they scan the screen of the phone that way?
Like everybody else, I would be a little nervous just handing over my phone.
The way I do it now is, I just give the clerk my phone number and they pull up
my rewards information that way. To me, that is easy short and sweet!

Re: Help with Bookshare

2015-02-21 Thread Jane
There is also another app out there called Voice Dream Reaer. I use that in
conjunction with Read2Go. I use Read2Go for newspapers, and Voice Dream for
everything else.

Voice Dream lets me read much more quickly--also, you can save the library to
your computer, meaning you never loose your books--unlike with Read2Go. If
something goes wrong and you have to re-install Read2Go, your downloaded
materials are gone. Not so with Voice Dream Reader, as long as you remember to
save the library.

Out of curiosity, because I never read periodicals, what does Read2Go do that
makes it easier to read newspapers in than Voice Dream Reader? I've heard one
or two other people say the same thing, but I can't figure out just what the
advantage is. Thanks.

Easier to move by headings and skip articles--for me, anyway, using Read2Go.

Of course, there's the NFB Newsline app, and I guess you can do the same thing
there.

I know that the android version of the book share platform downloads new
versions or days of newspapers automatically but I don't know if the iOS
version does too. Perhaps this would be a good feature request for voicedream.

RE: is the new iOS for iPhones a bit more usable?

2015-02-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Devin,

A number of bugs have been fixed, but there also still are some annoying ones
which have been present ever since the first iOS 8 beta release which means
they have been reported to Apple now for 9 months and still are not fixed. One
of these is the fact that you can't move most apps in the bottom row of the
home screen (the one above the dock). I believe there are alsos till issues
with Safari and the back button on web pages and a number of issues for braille
users.

Apple has so far released 5 beta versions of iOS 8.2 and even though 8.2 is not
even out yet to the public, iOS 8.3 Beta 1 has been released and 8.3 Beta 2 is
expected next week. 8.3 Beta 1 seems to have fixed a few things, but other
problems have been introduced so let's ope they get fixed soon.

Jonathan has written an excellent article about the just announced iOS public
beta program which 9to5Mac has written about and which is expected to start on
March 11 with a public beta of iOS 8.3. This means I would expect that iOS 8.2
will be released publically before then, but who knows, maybe iOS 8.2 will
never become a public release and Apple will stick with 8.1.3 until the publick
release of 8.3. They are definitely doing things differently and in any case,
the majority of the new features in the 8.2 beta are about the upcoming Apple
Watch. Once again Jonathan has blogged about an article which states that while
iOS 9 which will be announced in a little over 3 months during Apple's world
wide developer conference will of course have some new features, but focus will
be heavily about squashing bugs and on getting iOS to be what it used to be, a
platform which is rock solid, secure and which works well without a lot of
bugs. I think we do have good things to look forward to this year and quite a
few Voiceover users will most likely manage to be part of that group of 100,000
people who will get access to the iOS 8.3 and later iOS 9 public beta. Yes, I
know people have already asked how they can register for that, but I think we
just have to wait until Apple announces this officially and those who do want
to participate better be on the ball since I doubt that once Apple does take
registrations it will take long for the 100,000 spots to be filled. It would
actually be nice if Apple set aside 1% or so of these spots specifically for
Voiceover users maybe by registration via Apple Accessibility, but I doubt that
will happen and we will just have to compete with everybody else..

Regards,
Sieghard

Well it all depends on if apple listens to the bug reports. If OS X Yosemite is
one show of apples ability to listen, then voiceover will just have to wait
until iOS 9.3 or so.

Re: is the new iOS for iPhones a bit more usable?

2015-02-21 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I haven't read the articles on this public beta yet, but it takes more
than a public beta to squash bugs. There also has to be a commitment
from Apple to put resources into fixing the reported bugs. As Sieghard
says below, many of the bugs we're still seeing now in IOS 8 were
reported during the beta, so it isn't an issue of Apple not knowing the
bugs were out there.

Given that this is a public beta and the blind community is so small,
I'd also be concerned a bit that bugs just affecting the blind VoiceOver
user might get drowned out by the bugs affecting so many other users.
Obviously, fixing any bug will help all IOS users, including the blind,
but Apple will need to continue to be committed to accessibility and fix
VoiceOver bugs even if they only affect blind users.

that group of 100,000 people who will get access to the iOS 8.3 and later iOS 9
public beta. Yes, I know people have already asked how they can register for
that, but I think we just have to wait until Apple announces this officially
and those who do want to participate better be on the ball since I doubt that
once Apple does take registrations it will take long for the 100,000 spots to
be filled. It would actually be nice if Apple set aside 1% or so of these spots
specifically for Voiceover users maybe by registration via Apple Accessibility,
but I doubt that will happen and we will just have to compete with everybody
else..

hello group,

I have been reading around and it appears that there is a security flaw in
previous versions of iOS (7 and 8 - versions up to 8.1.12). So, my question is
this, should I finally upgrade my iPhone 5 to the new iOS? How many of the
voiceover issues have been resolved?

Re: A Virtual Reward Card On Your iPhone 6 Plus, Be Careful Who You Hand It To

2015-02-21 Thread Wayne Merritt
While this is concerning, I would be more interested to know if the
virtual apps that store reward cards are even accessible to blind/low
vision users. And if so, then how do you transfer your reward cards
from the individual apps to the one that stores them all? Finally,
anyone know of such an app to sore reward cards?

I realize that this thought is after the fact and may not help Mark,
but this is a good reason for having a case on your phone. Granted,
the employee shouldn't have dropped the phone in the first place, but
accidents happen.

 Hello All,

I am absolutely in love with the Passbook App and Apple Pay feature on
 my
 iPhone 6 Plus.

The number of brick & mortar stores in my area that accept Apple Pay
transactions via the NFC protocol is relatively high. As a result, I
 find
myself using my iPhone to make purchases at least once a week,
 sometimes
 even more.

The one thing I would like to see added to the Passbook app is the
 ability
to quickly and easily add store reward cards without first having to
 install
 a store-specific app.

Now I am well aware of the fact that there are a growing number of
third-party apps and websites that will facilitate the creation of a
passbook pass, however, given the recent data security breeches across
 the
web, I am reluctant to give out any private purchasing information to
third-party, and as far as I am concerned, unvetted entities.

Given my recent success with Passbook, I have been considering
 virtualizing
all of my store-specific reward cards by installing an app such as
 KeyRing
 or Stocards.

Using such an app would allow me to quickly display the virtual card on
 my
phone's display allowing it to be scanned at the time of purchase.

I was planning on downloading a few such apps this evening when,
 earlier
today, while in a brick & mortar store, I witnessed a customer hand her
iPhone 6 Plus, with a virtual reward card displayed on the screen, to a
store employee in order for the employee to scan the bar code.

To everyone's surprise, the employee dropped the iPhone. Because of a
convergence of circumstances, the phone landed on the floor. Not good.
 The
customer was, to put it mildly, furious.

After having seen this, I'm not certain if I want to use virtual store
reward cards if doing so means that I must first hand my device to a
 store
 employee.

A virtual reward card on your iPhone 6 Plus, be careful who you hand it
 to.

Re: bard question

2015-02-21 Thread Alan J Paganelli
In the Bard app, to edit books you no longer want, in the top right hand
corner of the book shelf is an edit button. You have to double tap that
first. Then you can delete unwanted books with the flick up to delete
gesture.

Re: A Virtual Reward Card On Your iPhone 6 Plus, Be Careful Who You Hand It To

2015-02-21 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
Yes the description below is exactly how it’s done at Starbucks for instance if
one is scanning their starbucks card from their app. Hold the phone up clerk
swipes a device past the face of the phone which is towards them but it never
leaves the owner’s hand.
I would be very surprised if other equipment configurations would be different
necessitating the handing over of a device; nor would I ever consent to doing
such myself.

Hi Devin,

A number of bugs have been fixed, but there also still are some annoying
ones which have been present ever since the first iOS 8 beta release which
means they have been reported to Apple now for 9 months and still are not
fixed. One of these is the fact that you can't move most apps in the bottom
row of the home screen (the one above the dock). I believe there are alsos
till issues with Safari and the back button on web pages and a number of
issues for braille users.

Apple has so far released 5 beta versions of iOS 8.2 and even though 8.2 is
not even out yet to the public, iOS 8.3 Beta 1 has been released and 8.3
Beta 2 is expected next week. 8.3 Beta 1 seems to have fixed a few things,
but other problems have been introduced so let's ope they get fixed soon.

Jonathan has written an excellent article about the just announced iOS
public beta program which 9to5Mac has written about and which is expected to
start on March 11 with a public beta of iOS 8.3. This means I would expect
that iOS 8.2 will be released publically before then, but who knows, maybe
iOS 8.2 will never become a public release and Apple will stick with 8.1.3
until the publick release of 8.3. They are definitely doing things
differently and in any case, the majority of the new features in the 8.2
beta are about the upcoming Apple Watch. Once again Jonathan has blogged
about an article which states that while iOS 9 which will be announced in a
little over 3 months during Apple's world wide developer conference will of
course have some new features, but focus will be heavily about squashing
bugs and on getting iOS to be what it used to be, a platform which is rock
solid, secure and which works well without a lot of bugs. I think we do have
good things to look forward to this year and quite a few Voiceover users
will most likely manage to be part of that group of 100,000 people who will
get access to the iOS 8.3 and later iOS 9 public beta. Yes, I know people
have already asked how they can register for that, but I think we just have
to wait until Apple announces this officially and those who do want to
participate better be on the ball since I doubt that once Apple does take
registrations it will take long for the 100,000 spots to be filled. It would
actually be nice if Apple set aside 1% or so of these spots specifically for
Voiceover users maybe by registration via Apple Accessibility, but I doubt
that will happen and we will just have to compete with everybody else..

Sieghard

I think most of the bugs have been exterminated. Besides that, I think Alex

hello group,

I have been reading around and it appears that there is a security flaw
in previous versions of iOS (7 and 8 - versions up to 8.1.12). So, my
question is this, should I finally upgrade my iPhone 5 to the new iOS?
How many of the voiceover issues have been resolved?

any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.

Saving documents in icloud in voice dream writer

2015-02-21 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Listers,

What is your experience of saving documents into icloud in voice dream writer?
I assumed since this facility existed that I could save a document into iCloud
and once it's saved, I could then open it on my mac or another iDevice, add
some text, and then open it again in voice dream writer. But this doesn't seem
to be the case. Voice dream writer saves versions of the document in icloud
giving them numbers after the name but I can't open them on my mac to edit them
or add content. I am also struggling to find a way of closing a document in
voice dream writer. There doesn't seem to be a way of doing so at all. I am
struggling to understand how icloud function is supposed to work in voice dream
writer. I've read the help file but it doesn't seem to make things clear. I
wrote to the developer a few days ago but as yet I've not heard.

Andrew

Hi. Back in June, 2012, I was part of a focus group that got to test a

the app suite was a nice concept and was pretty cool, I wasn't wowed by it. At
the CSUN conference in 2013, I became aware that this suite was to be called
Velasense and I had a chance to test it again; in fact, I've been in regular
contact with one of the developers ever since and have met with him to check it
out and see how it's evolved. Today, I met with that same developer and one of
his teammates to see the release candidate for Velasense which will roll out
very soon. As a confirmed Apple/IOS/Voiceover fan, I have to say that what I
saw of Velasense was pretty darn impressive. To be sure, there are still some
things that need to be tightened up and some usability tweaks that could be
implemented, but the developers showed me and my coworker that they're very
committed to developing a good, solid package and that they're really
responsive to end-user feedback. Would I switch to the package after it rolls
out? No, not right away at least; I've got too much time and money invested to
throw away my iPhone 6 and all the apps that I've bought over the past five
years. Until today, I've been telling my students who are struggling and
frustrated with Android phones and Talkback to scrap what they've got and
switch to Apple. Now, if they're already on Verizon, and they have a decent
phone, especially something like the Galaxy S5, they don't have to switch; they
will soon be able to go to the Google Play store or whatever it's called,
download and install Velasense, run the quick tutorial and get right into
Velasense fairly quickly. Just as there are alternatives to JAWS or
Window-Eyes, Velasense could represent a viable alternative to the Apple
ecosystem, and healthy competition is always a good thing in my view.

I thought if you searched for an app in the app store on your iphone if an app
was not compatible it would not show up or give you a warning and not install.

Keep in mind apple gives you two weeks to try a product, but I think the price
is to high and on top of that in app purchases for a trivia game? For that
price you should get both.

Just my opinion.

Hello,
I just found this app in the App Store. I was wondering if anyone has had
any experience with it. Is it truly accessible? I don't want to buy it until
I find some one who has had experience with it since it is so expensive.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Saving documents in icloud in voice dream writer

2015-02-21 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Andrew,

I've been able to do just as you say - open a file in Writer, make changes,
then open that file on my computer and edit. I've also started a file on the
computer and opened it in Writer. I wonder if you have multiple edits and might
have better luck if you deleted all but the most recent one.

I have had a problem where the last thing I typed in Writer wasn't saved. I
wish there was a way to close a file when I'm done with it in Writer, but the
only option seems to be opening a different file.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Best,
Anna

Hi Lelia,

You can use a braille display with Voice Dream Reader. The only problem is that
when you switch screens, you see a percentage of where you are in the file, and
you have to wait a couple of seconds for it to go away. So it’s annoying, but
usable.

iPhone not speaking properly

2015-02-21 Thread KristeenHughes
My iPhone 6 with the latest iOS was working properly earlier today. I locked it
and set it aside. When I tried to use it awhile ago, it would not speak to me
when pressing the home button or the power button to unlock it. I have no
sounds unless I press and hold the home button. Then I get Siri and sometimes
the VO message that says, “tap to start Siri”, but when I then press the home
key again so that I can unlock the phone, all is silent, no VO, no beeps or
clicks.

I can’t reboot the phone. It will not allow it.

I connected it to my computer and all looks okay. I then ejected it and
unplugged it and all is the same. Siri is now not available because my pass
code is needed after a restart, but since there is no speech, I can’t enter it.
Pressing the home key results in silence. When I connect the iPhone there isn’t
the usual connecting sound.

I have connected it to the computer again because I want to restore it, but I
can’t do that because it says I have to turn off the “find my iPhone” from the
phone, which I can’t manage without speech. Am I stuck, or is there something
else I can do that doesn’t require sighted assistance?

Thanks.

Kristeen

RE: A Virtual Reward Card On Your iPhone 6 Plus, Be Careful Who You Hand It To

2015-02-21 Thread Rose Combs
Well, that is one worry I don't have, since I can't get a fingerprint on my 6
and have tried more than once, Apple pay and reward are out for me, and give me
no reason to hand my phone to a clerk!

Subject: A Virtual Reward Card On Your iPhone 6 Plus, Be Careful Who You Hand
It To

Mark

Re: Seri

2015-02-21 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

It depends on what you mean by out of the box. If you've gone through
the setup process and enabled Siri then yes, it's on. If the phone is
sitting at the setup screen and you're wanting to use Siri to launch
VoiceOver then it may or may not work depending on the SIM. Best to
give it a go and see what happens, alternatively if the aim is to turn
VO on you could give tripple click home a go.

Cheers,
Ben.

Have you tried pressing the home button once to get to the lock screen
then doing tripple click home? If you can hear VO sounds but no
speech, try a three finger double tap. What happens when you try to

Plug the iPhone into the charger, and the charger into the wall, or plug the

Then press the home button 3 times quickly. Voice-Over should come on. You
have to go into settings, then into general settings, then into Siri

Re: iPhone not speaking properly

2015-02-21 Thread Alex Hall
Tell Siri to "turn VoiceOver on". I know it needs that passcode, but if you
remember where the buttons are, you should be able to enter it by feel alone.
I've had to do that in the past, and it's certainly doable. I doubt you need to
restore anything, just get Siri up and then tell it to turn VoiceOver on. You
could also try disabling VoiceOver through iTunes, syncing, then re-enabling it
and syncing again. I've never tried that, but it beats a full restore.

Sieghard

hello group,

I have been reading around and it appears that there is a security flaw in
previous versions of iOS (7 and 8 - versions up to 8.1.12). So, my question is
this, should I finally upgrade my iPhone 5 to the new iOS? How many of the
voiceover issues have been resolved?

any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.

There's some confusion over searching in the App Store. If you double

Also, the two week return policy you refer to doesn't apply to downloads

Hi Joe, if you go into Downcast settings, you can boost Downcast's volume with
a slider control. Maybe what has happened is that that slider has been set

RE: Sound Distortion on Downcast

2015-02-21 Thread Cristóbal
You beat me to the punch Jonathan. This was what I was going to mention. This
is especially noticeable in the lower bitrate podcasts. I have my global
setting at +1 (67%) for example. Anything higher and sound quality really
begins to crap out. There’s always the volume slider in the podcast itself
should there be a need to raise the volume of a particular file which usually
doesn’t’ cause the distortion.

Re: Talking atlas for iPad

2015-02-21 Thread RobH.
The in'app purchase includes the map of India as well as the game. But as
you say, still more than I want to splash out before getting first hand
feedback how it fairs.

I thought if you searched for an app in the app store on your iphone if an
app was not compatible it would not show up or give you a warning and not
install.

Keep in mind apple gives you two weeks to try a product, but I think the
price is to high and on top of that in app purchases for a trivia game? For
that price you should get both.

Just my opinion.

JMO, RobH, who'd also like this. Had a long'standing fascination with
geography.

Hello,
I just found this app in the App Store. I was wondering if anyone has had
any experience with it. Is it truly accessible? I don't want to buy it until
I find some one who has had experience with it since it is so expensive.
Thanks for any help.
Nancy
