RE: Weather Stations
Sieghard. What readings do you not get with this weather station? Can it be corrected??? At 12:30 AM 3/14/2015, you wrote: Hi Chris, To start with your question about the barometric sensor in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, yes, they are there, but they are being used for elevation and you don't have access to them directly. I am not sure if Apple allows developers access to them since then somebody could I guess make an app where they display barometric pressure. Now, as for the Netatmo weather station, it's basically yes to all your questions. If you buy the basic package for $180 you get 1 indoor and 1 outdoor module. The indoor module gives you indoor temperature, minimum and maximum indoor temperature from 12:01 AM to Midnight, indoor humidity, CO2 level, noise level in decibels and barometric pressure is displayed. The outdoor module measures current temperature, minimum and maximum temperature, it gives you Feels Like temperature and also shows outdoor humidity. You can buy up to 3 more additional indoor modules for $79/each if you want readings for other rooms/areas of your house, they are like the outdoor modules and give you everything except for noise level since that uses too much battery power and requires the main indoor module which needs to be plugged in. Netatmo also offers a rain gauge which is of the tipping bucket design and which works great. It gives you total rainfall starting at 12:01 AM until Midnight, but if you want to know you have to check just before midnight because while the previous day's amount is there for sighted people, it is currently not accessible with Voiceover. When Netatmo first came out it was almost completely inaccessible. I bought a station and contacted the company. Their head developer in Paris, France got a hold of me and we had several Skype conversations about accessibility, he made changes which I tested and the result was a very accessible app which gives you most readings, but not all of them. Netatmo is also in the process of developing an Anemometer (a wind sensor) which would pretty much complete the stations capabilities. It might be interesting to have it as an option within the app. I use Talking Tuner several times a week to tune my harp. I think the two things I would like to see most would be: 1. Faster response 2. The ability to use the app with a pick-up which could be cliped to the instrument for tuning in a situation where there is background noise. In other words, very slow or no clicking would be very much in tune and the clicking speeds up as you get more out of tune. A similar feature can be found in the Chromatia Software Tuner for the PC, from FMJ Software. So, would people be interested in this, as in, actually buy an app which contained this feature? I have no idea if he's thinking of incporporating this into Talking Tuner, or developing a separate app. Personally, I think it would be fine as a new feature for Talking Tuner, since that app is already very simple. He's more interested in this idea than say, a tone generator, since there are already lots of tone generating apps out there. Let me know if you would actually buy this app or be interested in it as a feature if you already own Talking Tuner. RE: Just use Sonos, was: Stereo Receivers That Can Be Operated With An App?
HiChristopher, I also don't disagree with what you say although there is a big difference between wiring a room or house when its being built and trying to retrofit an existing house with in-wall wiring and speakers. When I bought my house in 1996 it was a spec home, but I bought it early on so the inside walls had only been framed and not drywalled. I also went ahead at that point and installed speaker wires for built-in ceiling and in-wall speakers since I had an Onkyo receiver even back then which was capable of handling 2 independent zones. I had the main zone hooked into speakers in my living room with rear speakers built into the ceiling above the couch and the second zone was hooked up to a Niles 4-port speaker switch which provided signal to my bedroom, bathroom, office and kitchen. Of course those rooms wee not able to play independent sources although I did have in-line volume controls in each room so I could turn the volume all the way down if I didn't want sound in a particular room. Anyhow, the point is that I do come from a more traditional background and while a number of receivers nowadays are capable of being hooked up to a router and handling certain online subscriptions, I highly doubt any one of them handles as many as Sonos and in as accessible a format. A solution with such a receiver also does not give you the flexibility and scalability that Sonos offers when it comes to expanding into different rooms without any fuss and the variety of Sonos gear nowadays makes the system just ever so appealing. I am now just waiting for their long-anticipated headset which I really hope is coming this year or if not this year then next year. Every time I talk to their support and mention it they tell me that they get a ton of requests for a headset and I'm quite sure it's going to become reality in the near future. Then I can enjoy all my Sonos system has to offer with perfect privacy and without disturbing my wife or anybody else. I know that I could get a really good wireless headset and hook it into one of the RCA or optical digital outputs of one of my Sonos players, but I don't want to spend the money for a really good wireless headset knowing Sonos will most likely have one which will be fully integrated into their system in the near future. Also, Sonos has one other advantage which most receivers don't have and that is the fact that you get regular software updates which improve the system and which ensure that new music services are available. Deezer lossless, for example, is only available via Sonos at least at this point. I had a free 1 year Deezer subscription which came with the purchase of my Playbar and just last week I received an offer from Deezer to upgrade to their Deezer Elite lossless service for a ridiculous $36.50 for an entire year. Normally that service is $20 a months and it is an awesome offer and the sound quality is amazing. I'm not pushing home theater receivers or knocking Sonos, and I listen carefully to everything Sieghard says, especially when it comes to audio, but I have one tiny point of clarification. Home theater receivers do come with the ability to tap into subscription music services and do support DLNA, so you can access your music from a network attached storage device. The Yamaha RX-V773 receiver I own has these features, and it's obviously not unique. We built our house a few years ago, and we had it wired for a 7.2 surround sound system in the family room, so we don't have big bulky speakers or wires anywhere. I've looked into Sonos recently, and I may still go that option in the future for some situations, but for my living room, I don't think it beats just dropping a network capable home theater receiver into my AV cabinet. Re: Adding a mailbox
Hi, Desi, Yes, there is a way to add a new mailbox to your list. I have a Yahoo account and when I want to add a new mailbox, I back out of my Inbox and I land on the area where all my mailboxes are listed, such as Sent, Trash, Drafts, etc. At the top right of your phone is an Edit button. You double tap that and here again, all your mailboxes are listed. At the end of the list, there's an Add Mailbox title. You would double tap on that and this puts you into an edit field where you would type in a name for your new mailbox. Then at the top right corner of your phone is the Done Button, which you would double tap when you are finished giving your new mailbox a name. You could then move the appropriate messages into your new mailbox. It's a neat feature, and I have several mailboxes that I've added and I can organize various messages in them. I hope this helps you. Esther Levegnale Sent from Esther's Amazing and Awesome iPhone 6+! RE: Weather Stations
Hi Neal, What readings specifically would you be looking for? I listed what you get and as far as I am concerned one of the major ones I currently don't get (until they release their wind sensor) is wind speed.Otherwise I get pretty much all I care about, temperature, current as well as minimum and maximum for the day, humidity, pressure and, one I like, indoor CO2 levels. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Neal Ewers Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2015 12:01 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Weather Stations Sieghard. Re: Stereo Receivers That Can Be Operated With An App?
Generally a company's app will work with a whole range of their products, so if there's a Denon app that's accessible and works with one model of their receiver, chances are it works with all of heir modern receivers. The entry for the app in the App Store will list what models it supports. Apps also tend to have a demo mode so you can download them and take them for a test spin to see how accessible they are before buying the receiver. I purchased a home theater system a few years ago, and one of the criteria I used was how accessible it's iPhone app was. If I remember, Onkio, Denon, Pioneer, and Yamaha all had apps for their home theater systems, and I think Denon and Pioneer were the most accessible. That was a few years ago, and my memory may not be completely accurate, so definitely don't take my word on that and check things out for yourself first. I ended up getting a Yamaha RX-V773 (I think that's the right model number.) and I just recently put it on the network by extending my wifi network with an old LinkSys router. The iPhone app isn't as accessible as I remember it, but there have been a few updates recently, so I need to check that out again. It does support AirPlay though, so it's trivial to go to my iPhone, get it to play something, and then hit the AirPlay button and the RX-V773 device and listen to whatever I want on my iPhone through my home theater system. On 03/14/2015 12:12 AM, Arnold Schmidt wrote: A couple years ago, I think on Cool Blind Tech, there was a podcast about a Denon receiver that was quite accessible using an iPhone app. However, even when that podcast was released, that receiver was no longer available. I don't know what the giraffe is made out of but spending 30 bucks for a piece of cardboard that you fold I think that's just a little ridiculous it was made out of some plastic that you know I wouldn't wear out after a while and I could see spending 30 bucks for it but not not just cardboard and some LED lights on a Velcro strip is Lisette's what I have heard so that's my help to you so and I think the giraffe will fit the six or 6+ on it where the other one you're just stuck with the the 5S or smaller or the other or the four so I hope this helps you have not got one of these yet hoping they're going to come out with one that's more sturdy that won't wear out and fall apart if it gets wet with rain or other liquids that might get spilled on it so go and see I hope somebody else responds on here as to what the giraffe is made out of because I truly do not know what it is but. Back in June, 2012, I was part of a focus group that got to test a suite of apps that were running on Verizon Android phones, and though I thought the app suite was a nice concept and was pretty cool, I wasn't wowed by it. At the CSUN conference in 2013, I became aware that this suite was to be called Velasense and I had a chance to test it again; in fact, I've been in regular contact with one of the developers ever since and have met with him to check it out and see how it's evolved. Today, I met with that same developer and one of his teammates to see the release candidate for Velasense which will roll out very soon. As a confirmed Apple/IOS/Voiceover fan, I have to say that what I saw of Velasense was pretty darn impressive. To be sure, there are still some things that need to be tightened up and some usability tweaks that could be implemented, but the developers showed me and my coworker that they're very committed to developing a good, solid package and that they're really responsive to end-user feedback. Would I switch to the package after it rolls out? No, not right away at least; I've got too much time and money invested to throw away my iPhone 6 and all the apps that I've bought over the past five years. Until today, I've been telling my students who are struggling and frustrated with Android phones and Talkback to scrap what they've got and switch to Apple. Now, if they're already on Verizon, and they have a decent phone, especially something like the Galaxy S5, they don't have to switch; they will soon be able to go to the Google Play store or whatever it's called, download and install Velasense, run the quick tutorial and get right into Velasense fairly quickly. Just as there are alternatives to JAWS or Window-Eyes, Velasense could represent a viable alternative to the Apple ecosystem, and healthy competition is always a good thing in my view. Just use Sonos, was: Stereo Receivers That Can Be Operated With An App?
Hi Arnold, My recommendation is Sonos. You said “stereo receiver” in your subject so I assume you are looking for a receiver (amplifier with integrated tuner) for music playback. If you already own a set of good quality speakers you want to use, then get a Sonos Connect Amp. You get a very nice sounding amplifier with 110 Watts of Class D amplification for $600. It is small, fully connected with access to dozens of paid and free internet music services and the app is fully and fantastically accessible. On top of that you will have the freedom to expand your Sonos system later with any of their other players to bring music to other rooms, you can add a Sonos wireless Sub or, if you already have a traditional, powered Sub, you can connect it to your Connect Amp. If you want a full 5.1 surround system, it would set you back about $1,800 with a Sonos Playbar, Sonos Sub and two Play 1 players for the rear channel. In my opinionthe flexibility, connectivity and accessibility of Sonos beats anything else out there. Even if you consider an inexpensive $300 or $400 receiver paired with an inexpensive $200 or $300 set of bookshelf speakers, you now have spend $500 to $700. For $600 you can buy two Sonos Play 3 players and set them up as a stereo pair which will sound every bit as good as what you get with a low-end traditional setup. The traditional setup means a bulky receiver, speakers which by themselves are about the size or larger than the Sonos Play 3 and, of course, wires which have to go from the receiver to the speakers. This setup gives you access to an FM/AM tuner and you have not yet added any other source of music. For this you either need to spend more money for a CD player or connect your computer or iPhone to the receiver. Chances are you may find a receiver which has Airplay capabilities so you could play music to the receiver wirelessly via your iPhone or iTunes, if not you will need to connect the computer or iPhone with a cable. Playing music from Tune In or a subscription based music service similarly would require you to use your iPhone with Airplay or your iPhone or computer wired into the receiver. With Sonos access to Tune In and just about every subscription based music service you can think of is integrated into the fully accessible Sonos app. Your own music can easily be accessed by ripping all your CD’s (if you haven’t done so already) and give Sonos access to your music folder on the computer or, even better, on a network attached hard drive which means your computer doesn’t even have to be on. This means additional components like CD Players also become a thing of the past. Facebook notifications question again, please help.
Hello list, at first I am very sorry for such a long e-mail, but I want to explain things properly. I asked this question several times but have not found an answer, so I thought I'd try again. I am just wondering how can a blind personset notifications to get from Facebook pages. Apparently, it is possible for sighted users. Here is the text from the website: How do I turn on notifications for friends or people and Pages I follow? To turn on notifications for friends or people and Pages you follow: 1. Go to the person's profile or Page 2. Click Friends or Liked 3. Click to check Get Notifications When you choose to get notifications, you'll get a notification each time that person or Page posts something shared with you. You can turn off these notifications by unchecking Get Notifications. https://www.facebook.com/help/299284303519326 When I click on liked as it is described above, nothing happens. It is not a problem to set notifications forgroups or people, but I cannot find a way how to do it for pages. The instructions above do not seem to work with screen readers (either Voiceover or NVDA). I don't have many friends in my facebook, so it was not a problem to put all of them to close friends list, so I know I will not miss any of their posts. It is all the same for the groups; there is an option to get notifications for all posts. Unfortunately I cannot find such an option for pages. I have been following pages provided by different stores (food stores, clothes stores, pet stores), TV shows, TV channels, radio stations, theatres, cinemas, job agencies, libraries, pages that give offers, coupons ETC. As we all know Facebook do not show every single post on news feed, so it happens quite often that I miss a post I find important, but Facebook does not think I might be interested in that particular post, so it is not on my timeline and it happened quite often that I for example missed something I was interested in. The solution might be to open each page to see all their posts. But let's say you are following more than50 pages so opening one by one takes too much time and I do not want to spend all day browsing my Facebook. I used to do that for a while, but it takes too long to check everything. You may say that Twitter is an alternative to follow, but here, in Slovakia, they prefer Facebook. I would be grateful for any tips and instructions. I was told it is possible, but I did not get any tips to get it work. Please feel free to contact me off-list at maria.orovcik...@gmail.com Thank you for your help in advance. Have a great weekend. Re: Just use Sonos, was: Stereo Receivers That Can Be Operated With An App?
On 03/14/2015 10:57 AM, Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. wrote: I agree with everything Sieghard said. I bought 4 Play3’s in December, setting them up as paired units in 2 rooms. This was registering as a new NPR.org user.) No commercials or underwriting (at least so far). I found a few unlabeled buttons if I clicked on a story title, but couldn’t quite figure them out. I also found a 3-finger swipe left or right could sometimes change a page to different content. Don’t know any more than that now. At one point during the login process there was an option for text or graphic. This was during my before the email authorization phase, so I’ll make sure text is enabled if I find it again. Also, I noted on the Welcome email that came up after the email authrozation, that there was a link to contact them with technical questions. They may be amenable to feedback regarding VoiceOver usability. This is a much more accessible and usable app than my Minnesota Public Radio News app, which my efforts to get them to address these issues have fallen on deaf ears. RE: Just use Sonos, was: Stereo Receivers That Can Be Operated With An App?
I agree with everything Sieghard said. I bought 4 Play3’s in December, setting them up as paired units in 2 rooms. With Spotify, and my iTunes Match, I haven’t had such wonderful and accessible music listening in decades. And their phone support is excellent, if you need it. Keith From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2015 7:50 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Just use Sonos, was: Stereo Receivers That Can Be Operated With An App? A couple years ago, I think on Cool Blind Tech, there was a podcast about a Denon receiver that was quite accessible using an iPhone app. However, even when that podcast was released, that receiver was no longer available. RE: Has anyone tried the Npr One app? Is it accessible and usable?
I have tried the NPR One app and it seems very accessible. The app seems to be designed as a live feed of selections of various NPR programs and stories. It starts with a top of the hour news report and moves on from there. On the top menu is a search button at the far left which can be executed to generate a search box to search for specific NPR stories. The middle label of the top-line menu will say what is currently going such as Now Playing. The top-line button to the right is a User Profile button. You have to sign in with a Facebook, Google Plus, or an NPR account if memory serves me correctly. What's shown in the user profile section will be gleaned from whichever account you use. The bottom line menu of the main NPR One screen has a rewind button to the far left, a play/pause button in the middle, and a skip button at the right. I'm not sure how it decides which stories are served up if you choose to skip or not but I've not figured out whether the user can influence the selections. I've found all the buttons to be clearly labeled and the app to be very accessible and to work very well. The FopyDo that should be available to order in the next week or so. That corrugated plastic is quite durable and it provides the most flexibility and it is an amazing price. The creator is going to send me the link as soon as it becomes available. It will have a longer name since it is a newer model, but I’m not sure of the final wording he settled on. RE: Weather Stations
The barometer is wy off, though, by almost a point.
