Re: Accessible app for lerning braille

2015-03-15 Thread Maria Kristic
I know that there is an app called Braille Sonar that is a reference--that is,
it allows you to look up symbols to see how they are written in Braille. It is
at:

Braille Sonar Pro by Mary Beth Harvish
https://appsto.re/us/jnUCI.i

The Braille Screen Input feature of iOS 8 does provide some feedback also which
you might find helpful. For instance, when you activate Braille Screen Input,
if you touch and hold, you will enter Explore Mode; drag your finger around to
discover how the Braille dots are laid out, and lift your finger to exit
Explore Mode. If you set VoiceOver to echo characters or both characters and
words, and if Braille Input is set to uncontracted, you will get VO feedback as
you type each character. For contracted Braille, you will get feedback of the
current word you have typed once you have flicked right with one finger to
input a space.

In terms of apps which actually provide interactive exercises for learning
Braille and which are accessible, I have heard of one called Braille Tutor, but
as that is an iPad app only, and I do not have an iPad, I cannot say anything
else about that one...

If I type "Braille" in to the App Store, I do see several apps such as Learn
Braille Alphabet, Learn Braille Numbers, and others which provide interactive
exercises, but I know nothing about them in terms of whether they are meant to
be used by VoiceOver users...

Hope some of this is helpful...

Regards,
Maria

Re: how to add hindi books from bookshare in voice dream reader in ipad/ i phone

2015-03-15 Thread Maria Kristic
The reason you cannot choose Hindi as a "category" in Voice Dream Reader is
that Bookshare treats categories as subject categories and language as a
separate item to browse by. Language is not a separate browsable item in VDR's
Bookshare support.

The way to get around this is to browse the Bookshare site using Safari, choose
to download the book you want, and on the download screen, select to open it in
Voice Dream. The built-in Voice Dream Web browser doesn't seem to support the
downloading of books from the site itself, at least from what I tried just now,
hence I recommend using Safari. So, in Safari, go to the site, log in, then
browse the Hindi titles (either by selecting the Advanced Search link and then
selecting Hindi in the languages list or by clicking on Browse link > Browse By
Language link > Hindi). Once a title has been located, ensure its
corresponding format list box has been set to the desired item (such as the
default DAISY Text Only), and click the corresponding Download button. A page
will open listing the file name and giving you options for what program to open
the file in. Open In Voice Dream might be one of the choices there immediately,
or you may have to click the Open In... button and select Voice Dream from
there. The file will then load in to Voice Dream Reader.

Hope it helps...

Regards,
Maria

RE: Need help with apple tv, please?

2015-03-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Wendy,

That should be correct, but I assume it has other ports, Component and Composit
but as long as it is set to HDMI 1 and there is only 1 HDMI port it should be
fine.

Hi Sieghard,

Thanks so much for the information. My particular tv has only one HDMI port so
I would be looking for just HDMI 1, right?

iPhone 6 Plus case with Bluetooth keyboard

2015-03-15 Thread Nancy Badger
The subject says it all. I am looking for an iPhone 6 Plus case that has a
Bluetooth keyboard on it. I'm thinking of a case with a cover that folds over
the phone. The cover is also the Bluetooth keyboard. Does anyone know of one?
Thanks

2015-03-15 Thread Donna
The bug in question, is the problem with not being able to move single apps or
folders? I'm using an iPhone 6 and haven't had any problems moving apps just
above the dock. Didn't have this problem on my iPhone 5 either. Haven't had to
move a folder so that is why I'm curious.

My impressions about dleksy vs direct touch typing

2015-03-15 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hello everyone

I tried again the latest update by dleksy and was not very impressed.

Maybe it is getting a bit better but with not too much effort I am already
typing pretty fast using direct touch typing

I really think it is worth exploring and practicing a cot and gives great
results.

I am writing now almost as fast as with braille but make slightly more more
mistakes. I am seriously considering getting a speed dots screen protector. To
make this way of inspiring text even more efficient.

I can honestly say hand on heart goodbye to dleksy

Vest regards and I hope I have convinced some to give direct touch typing a
try. Ioana c

That's the only app too that it's showing up on for me too.
So good to know wasn't me as was trying to figure out what did to cause that.
So hope they fix the problem as will check to see if there's a contact for the
app developer so can report that to them.
Thanks again.

Was this bug reported to the voiceover accessibility team? That is bad if they

Hi Richard,

Was this bug reported to the voiceover accessibility team? That is bad if they
never fixed it in all of the releases.

It was never fixed for me in any of the 8.1 flavors and is not fixed in 8.2
either.

RE: email notifications

2015-03-15 Thread Cristóbal
This is why I use the official Gmail app for push notifications and the native
iOS mail app to interact with the same emails. The Gmail app has indeed gotten
a lot better at Voiceover accessibility, but I just find the native mail app
easier to get around and do things.

The reason why you're getting the emails when you open the mail app is because
your current setting is set to manual. If you go to settings then mail contacts
and calendars there will be a Fitch new data button. You want to activate that
and select the correct setting for the email account. You will have the option
to select from push, fetch or manual. Manual is the best way to go about if you
want to conserve your battery power as it will not constantly try to find new
emails.

Richard is correct, that bug never was fixed and if it worked for you in 8.1
then that is because you were always able to move certain apps in the bottom

The reason why you're getting the emails when you open the mail app is because
your current setting is set to manual. If you go to settings then mail contacts
and calendars there will be a Fitch new data button. You want to activate that
and select the correct setting for the email account. You will have the option
to select from push, fetch or manual. Manual is the best way to go about if you
want to conserve your battery power as it will not constantly try to find new
emails.

Re: Enjoy a Flyover Tour of Major Cities in Maps

2015-03-15 Thread Richard Turner
Interesting tip. I went to the flyover cities link and VoiceOver is using what
sounds like a Russian voice even though Samantha is my current synthesizer. If
I go to a city's name and turn the rotor to characters, samantha says the
space, but a possibly Russian voice speaks the letters then when the phonetic
pronunciation is spoken it is Samantha again.
Very, very strange.
I was just checking to tell my wife.

Ok, but did you install any of the betas on your Mac? They wanted you to do
that and then once you provide feedback for the OS X betas, you would think
you'd be eligible for the iOS invite.

Re: Problems with a Kanex keyboard

2015-03-15 Thread Alex Hall
Are you sure Quick Nav is off? In an edit field, hit the left and right arrow
keys together; you should hear "quick nav off". If it says "on" instead, turn
it back off and let us know, since that means this wasn't the problem.

Problems with a Kanex keyboard

2015-03-15 Thread Tom Frank
A friend of mine bought a Kanex keyboard from our local store that deals
exclusively with Apple products. It works beautifully on his wife’s I Pad and
on his 5S Iphone in every way except one. It will not type into a text field.
That kind of defeats the purpose of the keyboard.

I reconnected the blue tooth, restarted everything and did every trick in the
book I know of.

The keyboard is nice in that it allows up to three devices. Simply press one
for his wife’s I Pad and two for his I phone. I even switched the two around
but no luck.

Anyone out there own a Kanex keyboard that works? What am I missing?

RE: Can you transfer recordings made in TuneIn Radio from an iDevice to your computer, and if so, how?

2015-03-15 Thread Cris Ali
Two years or so ago, I asked the developer and he said you can’t. I do not
believe there has been any change since then. In away one of the most
attractive features of tune in, the ability to record, is rendered useless with
this restriction.

I've never seen a way to do this.

If it exists, I'd like to know as well.

Re: How do I see my list of apps in itunes latest version using windows

2015-03-15 Thread Colin Matthews
Hi!
OK when you’ve got iTunes open you should get to your apps by hitting Control+7
and you should be able to find the table of all your apps!
I’m not a windows user so not sure how you go through the options when you’ve
got your iPhone connected!
But I do know you need to find the tree view that says summery and other
options like tones, apps and just select the app option to show which ones you
have got on the iPhone!
Maybe someone with windows can tell you better! HTH

weird pronunciation changes in voicedream reader?

2015-03-15 Thread Shermeen Khan
Hi everyone,

has anyone noticed that since the most recent update of voicedream
reader, there have been some odd pronunciation changes in how the
voices read certain words? for instant, "watched" is now pronounced as
"washed", "worse" is pronounced as "words", and if a sentence begins
with the word "I" followed by another word, particularly words that
begin with the letter 'l', the I will now be pronounced more like
"uh". So instead of saying "I lied" or "I laughed", it'll say "uh
lied" or "uh laughed" and although some of these changes can be
corrected by fiddling around with the pronunciation dictionary, others
seem pretty unchangeable. Has anyone else noticed this? is it worth
contacting the developer?

RE: Need help with apple tv, please?

2015-03-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Wendy,

First of all, you do have to make sure you have the correct input selected on
your TV because if you don't, then Voiceover may give you a prompt to turn it
on and you would never know. Below is a link to an Apple support article about
how to turn on Voiceover for the first time:

https://support.apple.com/en-mu/HT202149

If you are not sure you have selected the correct input, you might need a
sighted person to check this and to practice with you as to how you can
reliable change from, for example, HDMI 1 to HDMI 2.

Anytime you see a link in Safari or Mail, you can tap and hold it to reveal
options beyond simply opening the new page. I constantly use this feature when
I'm looking at the news in my personalized Yahoo page. If I see a news story I
want to read, I tap and hold the link so that the page opens in a separate tab.
That way I can quickly go back to the original Yahoo page without having to use
the back arrow and waiting for the page to reload. The options in Safari also
included adding the linked page to your Reading List. Tapping and holding a
link in Mail also gives you the option of adding the page to your reading list
as well as opening the page in Safari. Finally, the options include copying the
link so you can paste it elsewhere. Can't read the email? View this tip and

Re: reading books from National Braille Press

2015-03-15 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

DAISY books from NBP have the text read by a synthetic voice, but they also
include the full text, so you can read them with whatever voice you like.

Best,
Anna

I'm so glad somebody brought up this particular program. I was wondering, if
it's possible to fill out an application someone has sent you using this

RE: Weather Stations

2015-03-15 Thread Ann Byrne
Is there a way to calibrate the barometer? Ours is way
off. sometimes it says 28.85, for example. fortunately, at that
time we are not in the midst of an Illinois tornado. It actually
means 19.70, or thereabouts. I guess if you know that, and don't
need an exact reading, it's okay.

At 12:40 AM 3/15/2015, you wrote:

Hi Neal,

What readings specifically would you be looking for? I listed what
you get and as far as I am concerned one of the major ones I
currently don't get (until they release their wind sensor) is wind
speed.Otherwise I get pretty much all I care about, temperature,
current as well as minimum and maximum for the day, humidity,
pressure and, one I like, indoor CO2 levels.

Yes. You need to enroll your Mac and install the beta for OS X Yosemite in
order to get the iOS invite.

Can you transfer recordings made in TuneIn Radio from an iDevice to your computer, and if so, how?

2015-03-15 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I've just started using TuneIn Radio to listen to sports streams, and I've
discovered you can record them. I've been recording Kentucky basketball
games, and I'd like to get these from my iPhone to my PC. If I saw
something properly, these recordings are mp3 files, so it leads me to think
there may be a way to transfer them from the iPhone. If this can be done
I'd appreciate someone telling me how to do it. If not, I can always use
the record from my Line In jack on my sound card.

Thanks in advance for the help.
