Re: No bird sound sending tweets through Twitter app
The dice world app has that sound but I could not find it among the choices under sounds. The tweet sound is rather weak when it plays. I believe I will record the tweet sound that dice world uses and I'll share it. - Original Message - From: Kathy Brandt katya20...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, April 02, 2015 3:36 PM Subject: Re: No bird sound sending tweets through Twitter app When rep at Apple tried to duplicate, he couldn't get the bird sound either. Issues transfering Voice Dream Reader library file to computer using iTunes.
As the subject states, I'm having issues transfering the VDR library file to my computer. Here are the steps that I take to transfer the file. Note that I'm still running iTunes 11.something and iOS 8.1.2. Steps: 1. I highlight the iPhone in the sources list/sidebar. 2. I check the apps button after highlighting the iPhone by pressing tab until I get to it. 3. I tab over to the file sharing section and down arrow to VDR in the file sharing apps list. 4. I tab once to the list of files which I can transfer, and down arrow to the VDR library file. 5. I tab to the save as button and press it. 6. I select the My Documents folder in the usual way, since this is a pretty typical save dialogue. 7. I press the Select Folder button. 8. I wait, tabbing and shift tabbing so that I can read the message that iTunes is copying the file. This is where things fall apart. I do not hear the ding that one usually does which signals that a process in iTunes has completed. I do, however, see that the copying message has disappeared, so I check the My Documents folder. And what do you know? There's no file. I have tried the process with the VLC app, with the result that the file I transfered does show up in my documents. I still didn't hear the ding, but it showed up where it was supposed to, so I'm pretty sure that I'm not doing something wrong. Has anyone else had trouble transfering the VDR library file to their computer? I've done it before, and it worked, but that was when I was running iOS 7, if I remember correctly. I'd like to stay with iTunes 11 if possible, but if I have to upgrade to iTunes 12, I'll bite the bullet and do it, even though it'll be a pain in the butt. Having my VDR library file is more important to me than annoyances with iTunes 12. On a related note, does anyone know what the Inbox file in VDR's transferable files is? Re: APPLE MAPS OR GOOGLE MAPS
I'm not sure I'd jump to this conclusion. Sure, Apple is going to hard code their apps into IOS as the default apps and of course Apple will integrate their apps together, such as SIRI and Apple Maps, but there's no reason to think that Cortana couldn't be just as integrated with non-Apple products, such as Google Maps. Since most people using the iPhone are going to be using at least some of the Apple apps then in reality you are correct. You'll get a more integrated experience using all Apple products. I prefer Google Maps since I found it so much easier to find my destinations in Google Maps than Apple Maps. I remember trying to find directions to Rackspace here in Austin, and I could bring it up in Google Maps by just typing Rackspace. In Apple Maps, I had to first find the actual street address. This was a while ago though, but since I've been happy with Google Maps ever since, I've never gone back to checking out Apple Maps. You may not be able to use Google Maps with SIRI, but you can with OK Google. Finally, I don't have a problem with Google Maps giving me the street names to turn onto. RE: Ringtones Again
Hi Gary, You can import it into iTunes easily enough, but you can’t use an MP3 ringtone on your iPhone, it will have to be converted to M4A format and then renamed with an M4R extension. In order to add it to your iTunes music library (it will be recognized by iTunes as a song), it’s probably just the easiest if you copy it into the “Automatically add to iTunes” folder which is located in your iTunes media folder. Let me know if uyou need more specific instructions, but I just assume you know how to find your iTunes Media and automatically Add to iTunes folder and that you know how to copy and paste the ringtone. Make sure iTunes is closed first, then copy it and open iTunes. iTunes should move the ringtone automatically to your music folder and add it to your music library, you’ll have to find it there. If it has no ID3 tags, it will most likely be at the very bottom of your list of songs. Now, as for converting it: First go to “Edit” and “Preferences” and tab down in the General tab to “Import”. Activate the button and make sure the setting is “AAC Encoder”. Next, when you are on the ringtone, right click on it and arrow down to “Create AAc Version” and press enter. This will make an M4A version of your rington which should be right underneath the original version. Now right click on that one and select “show in Windows Explorer” from the menu. This will open the folder where the ringtone is located, most likely your music folder in iTunes Media and put you right on it. I recommend you cut the song from there and then go to your Tones or ringtones folder and paste it here. Now you have to rename the extension from M4A to M4R. Most likely your extensions will be hidden, in order to show them go to “Tools” and “Folder Options” when you are in the Ringtones folder, Control+Tab once to the “View” tab, tab twice to put focus into the treeview of options and then page down. This should put you on or close to the entry you want. You may have to arrow down once or twice, in any way, arrow around until you find the following entry: Hide extensions for known file types – On You can toggle this on and off by pressing the space bar. If it is on, press space once so it’s off, then tab twice to the “OK” button and activate it. Now when you are on your ringtone, you should hear its name and the extension. For example, if the ringtone is called “Office Phone Modern”, you would hear “Office Phone Modern.m4a”. You can now use F2 to rename the file, most important is that you have to make sure to change the letter A at the end to an R, it should read “Office Phone Modern.m4r” to use my example. Once that has been accomplished, you can go back to Tools and folder Options, Control+Tab, tab twice into the treeview and find the “Hide extensions for known file types” again, change it back to “On” with the spacebar and select “OK”. Lastly, when you are back on your new M4R ringtone, press enter on it, that should start it playing in iTunes and that action will automatically make sure it is added to your tones library. You are now ready to sync it to your phone. If you have iTunes already set up to sync all tones, you just have to initiate a sync. If you haven’t synced any tones or have it set to sync only selected tones, you have to connecrt your phone, go to your device, then tab into the list view which starts with “Summary” and find Tones. Now tab until you get to the checkbox to “Sync tones”, check it and tab on to either “Sync All Tones” or “Sync Selected tones”. If you choose to sync selected tones, you have to also tab into the listview of tones and find the ones you want, check them by pressing the spacebar and then do a sync. I know this all sounds very complicated, but it really is not so hard once you do it a few times. If you don’t want to go through all the steps to rename the ringtone, just send it to me as an attachment, you can use siegh...@live.ca mailto:siegh...@live.ca and I’ll convert and rename it for you and send it back, then you just have to copy it into your tones folder and press enter on it to play it. Of course you still have to sync it to your phone. RE: APPLE MAPS OR GOOGLE MAPS
Hi, I have the Google Now app and use it a lot more than Siri actually. With the Google Now app it has a voice search and you can easily get directions. Honestly, the only drawback is that in a typical situation you can’t simply press and hold the home button to activate the Google voice feature, but that’s ok. Google gets answers faster and generially does things better than Siri and/or Apple Maps at least for my specific uses. -- Raul A. RE: USING iPHONE AS HOTSPOT
I am just curious whether in many European countries you still have to pay extra in order to use your iPhone or other mobile phone as a hotspot. It seems to me that the United States is one of the few countries left where carriers don't allow this. I think it must be almost 10 years where carriers in Canada charged extra for that, it's been no problem ever since I have had my first iPhone 4 in 2010. I also think that not all carriers in the US do this, I believe on T-Mobil you can use your iPhone as a hot spot without extra charges. Not sure why carriers care how you use your mobile data, if I have 2 Gb and I want to use it by connecting my laptop via my iPhone and download some huge files then that should be my problem. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Christopher Hallsworth Sent: Friday, April 03, 2015 11:43 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: USING iPHONE AS HOTSPOT I know you can definitely get it on Pay Monthly but I would contact your carrier about Pay As You Go. Hi Carol, Before you can use the Hot Spot feature, I would suggest calling your phone carrier to see whether there's any additional cost in using this feature and whether they need to do anything to enable it. I use ATThat, and I don't have to pay extra for it, but I know that at least in the past, some carriers did charge for it. Once you've got the go-ahead from your carrier, turn on the hot spot. You can leave the password as is or change it to anything you like. Then have the device that you want to use the hot spot check for networks. It should see your phone as a secure network. When you try to join, your device will ask for a password. Enter the password on your hot spot screen. Your device should soon show as connected, and you can then use it online just as you would with any other network. Keep in mind, though, that you're using cellular data, so be sure you have plenty so you don't go over your allotment, since going over can be expensive. REview and demo of the Zoom IQ6 Microphone
Hi everyone, I recently got the Zoom IQ6 microphone for my iPhone 6 and just published a podcast talking about it. There’s a physical description of the mic then a little demo of the audio quality itself. RE: REview and demo of the Zoom IQ6 Microphone
Hi, Your web page says the following. Handy Recorder app by Zoom leaves a lot to be desired. While the monitoring is helpful for setting the gain just about everything else is not accessible. I was able to record but unable to then export the recording in any way. If you use this mic I recommend using an app like Bossjock I'm not sure what trouble you had exporting. I just sent a file to my email client with no trouble what so ever. You might want to think about changing your introduction and doing a bit more playing with the app. Neal -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Mike M Sent: Friday, April 03, 2015 2:50 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: REview and demo of the Zoom IQ6 Microphone Hi everyone, I recently got the Zoom IQ6 microphone for my iPhone 6 and just published a podcast talking about it. RE: Issues transfering Voice Dream Reader library file to computer using iTunes.
Ari, I tried duplicating your issue since I also have Voice Dream Reader and iTunes 11.4.x. All the steps you listed below are spot on and I also selected the VDR Library file and when I executed the save as button, I chose the root of an external hard drive. I didn't get any tone when iTunes completed but I could hear the files copying via the hard drive clicking. When the process completed and the dialog closed, I had several new folders branching off the root of my external drive with names like 366f87c78272bdd4c50d6eafb7e0ad. These contained files within them with extensions of vdm. If you have a file search utility, you might try searching for files named with a wildcard and a vdm extension. I'm not sure what format these copied files are in but they don't seem to be in any format I'd know how to use. I know this is not of much help but I wanted to give you my results to confirm a similar experience to yours. Good luck with getting this to work. The first is called Four Down, and it's a true crossword puzzle game and is very accessible, or at least it was when I last played it. I haven't seen any updates for it in quite some time, so odds are that it should still be accessible. The second game that I have is called Wordundrum. This one is arranged like a crossword puzzle in that you have words that run both vertically and horizontally across the screen. The main difference is that the objective of this game is to fill in the missing letters to complete each word. When you get the app you're supplied with a starter puzzle pack, and you can buy additional puzzle packs for a buck or two, and the puzzles range from fairly simple to fairly complex. I've had good fun with both of those games and quickly got addicted to playing them. Have fun! Those inexpensive screenprotectors are known to get particles behind them and they can scratch the glass. They also develop moisture condensation. I guess you are referring to your new screen protector as one of those with the tempered glass. Definitely worth it if you can do it. Shop around. I've seen them from 24.99 to 49.99. I just got one at Verizon for I think 24.99. It was the least expensive around. All others were from 39 to 50 bucks. Re: How to find a video that settings thinks is on my iPhone
Hi there, I've taken another look and my husband has reminded me that the one I thought was a video was a DVD, with an interview at the end. It doesn't actually show up as a video, so perhaps I'm misleading you. I've searched the word video in my music and it came up with one result which was in the title, so no actual videos. Sorry I can't help further, but perhaps try a search of your phone or in any apps you have that are for making videos. Re: APPLE MAPS OR GOOGLE MAPS
Hi, Could you explain why Google maps is the better alternative? Yes it has busses, subways and so on, but can we as blind folks use it? You can’t follow maps in Google like you can in Apple maps. I don’t know how the route planning facilities in Apple maps are, in Google maps though they say ”In 50 meters turn left”, but it doesn’t say what street it should turn into, at least mine doesn’t. Google maps seems quite accurate though when it comes to telling you where to turn. I should say here that i haven’t as of yet tested Apple maps thoroughly so my observations may or may not be wrong. /Krister 3 apr 2015 kl. 16:15 skrev Feliciano Godoy theblindman...@hotmail.com: Google maps all the way.
