Re: prepping iPhone for sale?

2015-04-19 Thread MamaPeach
If you wipe the phone totally clean, then you don’t have to do anything else.
Once the person who purchases the device receives it, then they have to set up
their own apple ID during the initial set up of the device. None of your
information will remain on the device.

Isn't there some sort of website you apso need to go to to disassociate the
phone with your Apple ID? Also, don't you need to disassociate iMessage with
your phone number?

Thanks,
Ari

Re: difference between standard and encrypted backup?

Yes, when you make the backup, you will be prompted for a password. This is the
password used to encrypt the backup, and it can be anything. That is, it need
not be your computer account's password, or your iCloud password, etc.

Offbeat for iOS - the excellent solution is PaceDJ

2015-04-19 Thread Robin Christopherson
Richard

Thanksf or that update. I tried PaceDJ as someone recommended and it works a
dream. No crashing and it effortlessly reviews your library and allows you to
play songs of a similar B PM. You can even set up playlists where they start
slow for X mins then get faster then slower again etc. Brilliant app. Also for
a limited time it’s free so don’t get the lite version.

BTW one comment would be that it almost invariably seems to detect the BPM as
twice what you get if you use the feature to correct the BPM (by listening to
the song and tapping on the drum button which is also very easy to do) however
as the settings have an option to include songs with either half or twice the
BPM in the playlist then this is no problem at all. Simply tick these options
and you’re covered.

Thanks, Robin

But do remember that if you have Find My Phone turned on in your phone's
Settings, you will not be able in the future to restore your phone (or a new
phone) from that backup until Find My Phone is turned off on your original

As I understand it, a standard backup will back up everything on your device,
except sensitive information. An encrypted backup will back up everything, no
matter what. Essentially, then, restoring an encrypted backup will restore
wifi passwords, app logins, and other personal details; a standard backup
will restore the apps and data, but you'll have to sign back into everything.
I imagine I'm missing pieces, but that's the basic idea.

Once the person who purchases the device receives it, then they have to set up

Re: accessing audio description in netfliks

Sometimes. For me, I had to actually go in usage under storage and actually
clear data for Netflix, and then sign out and in. I then got through several
more episodes, and it disappeared again on me.

RE: Setting reminders with SIRI has become less useful

2015-04-19 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi, I have not tried this, but I think you just say to Siri something like,
Remind me to do a shopping list when I get home. Or, Remind me to take out the
trash when I leave home. Now, if she waits until you are already away from
home, that isn't much help. And, as I said, I have not tried this, but I would
think it would work.

 Hi,

Just thought I write about something I noticed recently although I can t say
exactly when this started. I used to be able to set a reminder with SIRI in
a way that if I wanted to be reminded an hour or so before the appointment
or whatever I was reminding myself about, I would simply do it in two parts
 like this:

Part 1: Set a reminder for Monday at 8 AM SIRI would then say OK,
just tell me what you want to be reminded about. I would then do the second
 part like this example:
Part 2: Dentist appointment at 10 AM
SIRI would then confirm: Here is your reminder for Monday at 8 AM, it says:
 Dentist appointment at 10 AM.

Now if I ask SIRI to create a reminder as in part 1 and then tell it what I
have above in part 2, the reply will be this:
Here is your reminder for Monday at 10 AM, it says Dentist appointment .

In other words it takes the time I want to hear the reminder before the
event and adds it to the time I

Hello
Is anyone using their phone to download audio described movies through
Blind Mice Mart. My desktop may be too old to be supported by freespace
which is where the movies are downloaded from. I keep getting an error
message from them. Using the phone I got to the right page on freespace to
download the file I wanted but it wanted me to create a sign in. This was
not necessary using the desktop. Is this really a requirement of freespace
when using the phone? Does anyone know?

Subject: Setting reminders with SIRI has become less useful

 Hi,

Just thought I write about something I noticed recently although I can’t say
exactly when this started. I used to be able to set a reminder with SIRI in
a way that if I wanted to be reminded an hour or so before the appointment
or whatever I was reminding myself about, I would simply do it in two parts
 like this:

Part 1: Set a reminder for Monday at 8 AM
SIRI would then say OK, just tell me what you want to be reminded about. I
would then do the second part like this example:
Part 2: Dentist appointment at 10 AM
SIRI would then confirm: Here is your reminder for Monday at 8 AM, it says:
 Dentist appointment at 10 AM.

Now if I ask SIRI to create a reminder as in part 1 and then tell it what I
have above in part 2, the reply will be this:
Here is your reminder for Monday at 10 AM, it says “Dentist appointment”.

In other words it takes the time I want to hear the reminder before the
event and adds it to the time I want to be reminded at to create a reminder
at the time of the event. I find this very annoying since I always like to
remind myself a bit before and to have the actual time of my appointment or
phone call or whatever it is as part of the reminder.

Just now I wanted to set a reminder about a Skype call I have at 8 AM on
Monday. I tried to trick it into doing it by saying it differently like “Set
a reminder at 7 AM on Monday” and then “Skype call with Brian at 8 AM” or
“Skype call with Brian in 1 hour” or “I have a Skype call in 60 minutes with
 Brian”. Each time it

I noticed that this is some sort of a bug. What you have to do, is go to a
Nother episode then go underling which options. You will see English of your
description as one of the options. Then, you can go to the previous episode
that you wanted to see. You can check language options then, then you will see
English audio description as an option. this was my experience...

Has anyone else experienced problems with Pages since the IOS 8.3 update?

2015-04-19 Thread Eleanor Roberts
Hi all

Was just wondering if anyone had experienced problems with Pages since the IOS
8.3 update? I'm running IOS 8.3 on an IPad Mini 3, and I've just tried Pages
for the first time since the IOS8.3 update and it seems to have gone mad. I was
trying to type a document that I need to send off tomorrow, but every time I
tried to go through it and check/edit/correct it it just wouldn't let me
navigate either by letter or word! It went mad and took me to really random
places in the document, or it took me out of the document completely. Has
anyone else experience this problem?? In desperation I turned to Word, and so
far (touch wood) it's working perfectly! But would be interested to know if
anyone else has encountered this issue when typing/editing in Pages since the
update?? If so, does anyone know what the sollution is to get it working
sensibly/properly again??

When I change the rotor to words or characters, all is normal. It's not a show

On The Unlocked Screen, Where Is The Answer Button?

2015-04-19 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I feel silly for asking this, I ought to know. I can't find the answer button
when I get a call while doing something in another app and the screen is
unlocked. A few updates ago, there was an accept button on the right side of
the screen, maybe a third of the way up from the bottom, and a decline button
on the left side. This accept button no longer seems to be there. Oftentimes,
the two-finger double tap doesn't answer my call. I am running 8.3.

Thanks for any information.

Re: Setting reminders with SIRI has become less useful

Can anyone talk about how they send location based reminders through Siri? I

Ok, I just tried settings several reminders which include a both a reminder

Siri got it right, each time.

For example, I said the following in one breath: “Remind me on Saturday at
1pm to go to the store at 2pm.”

Siri replied with, “Okay, here is your reminder for Saturday at 1pm, it says,
“Go to the store at 2pm.””

I used several variations including creating reminders to call someone at a
specific time and in each instance, Siri got it right, including the reminder
time and the actual target time which was written in the text of the reminder
 field.

As far as I can tell, one must state the reminder with both times in one
breath or, that is to say, without a pause.

 Hi Neal,

Now, that is interesting. I just tried your wording and that worked, But when
I tried it by saying “Remind me on Monday at 7:30 AM that I have a Skype Call
with Brian at 8 AM it just repeated that ver betum and when I said “Yes” to
create it SIRI just said “I added this to your list” which means it’s in my
list but not so that at 7:30 it reminds me. Maybe I am doing something wrong
and you can maybe try to set a reminder for a date a few days in the future
and see if that works for you. Something like my example, Remind me at a
certain date and time about an event that same day but maybe an hour or 2
later. As I said, this always used to work if you did it in 2 parts, first
tell SIRI you want a reminder on a certain date and time and second tell it
what you want the reminder to say including the time when your appointment is
or that it is in 1 hour, for example.

Subject: Setting reminders with SIRI has become less useful

 Hi,

Just thought I write about something I noticed recently although I can’t say
exactly when this started. I used to be able to set a reminder with SIRI in a
way that if I wanted to be reminded an hour or so before the appointment or
whatever I was reminding myself about, I would simply do it in two parts like
 this:

In other words it takes the time I want to hear the reminder before the event
and adds it to the time I want to be reminded at to create a reminder at the
time of the event. I find this very annoying since I always like to remind
myself a bit before and to have the actual time of my appointment or phone
call or whatever it is as part of the reminder.

Just now I wanted to set a reminder about a Skype call I have at 8 AM on
Monday. I tried to trick it into doing it by saying it differently like “Set
a reminder at 7 AM on Monday” and then “Skype call with Brian at 8 AM” or
“Skype call with Brian in 1 hour” or “I have a Skype call in 60 minutes with
Brian”. Each time it figured out that my Skype call was 1 hour from 7 AM and
wanted to create a reminder for 8 AM just called “Skype call with Brian”. I
finally tricked it by setting the reminder for 7:30 AM and saying “Skype call
with Brian in 30” and I guess not saying “30 minutes” confused it enough.

Do I have better things to do than to try and be smarter than SIRI? *smile*.

How do you get to the language menu on an Apple TV with a blue tooth keyboard to turn on audio description in Netflix?

2015-04-19 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

First, I’ve read messages on this topic, and the feature may not work yet.
I went into Netflix on my Apple TV, and I tried looking for the language
menu. I couldn’t find it using a blue tooth keyboard. I do have video
description turned on, but the movie I tested the feature with didn’t work.
How do you change languages on a blue tooth keyboard in Netflix? If audio
description is available on the Apple TV I’d like to use it. My fiancée and
I would enjoy watching movies that way.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Rating books from within the audible app

2015-04-19 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Shermeen,

While it looks as if you cannot give above a 4 out of 5 rating, this is not
actually the case.

Who ever labeled those graphics simply mislabeled them. The 4 out of 5 star
graphic is actually 5 out of 5. So instead of the stars going from 0 out of 5
to 4 out of 5 stars, They actually go from 1 out of 5 to 5 out of 5.

Hope this helps and do have a wonderful day!

Cheers!

Re: difference between standard and encrypted backup?

2015-04-19 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
Yes, but it only asks you for a password after your first encrypted
backup. It won't prompt you for a password when doing subsequent
backups, so if you forget that password over time, your backups are
worthless.

Note this isn't a reason not to do an encrypted backup, but it is a
reason to choose a password or figure out some way that you won't forget
it over time.

Re: accessing audio description in netfliks

2015-04-19 Thread Feliciano Godoy
I noticed that this is some sort of a bug. What you have to do, is go to a
Nother episode then go underling which options. You will see English of your
description as one of the options. Then, you can go to the previous episode
that you wanted to see. You can check language options then, then you will see
English audio description as an option. this was my experience...

HOW CAN I SEE EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE IN iCLOUD

My question subject line says it, really. I always just backup and I do have a

there were times when we just couldn't really use iCloud very well; so now I'm
asking if I can do this and how?

Yes, that's a really annoying part of FaceBook right now and I really don't
know how a VI person can best ensure they see everything without missing what
they really want and don't have to keep seeing posts out of order.

What's the best method to voice our views on this for those who do what they
want with FaceBook?

Rating books from within the audible app

2015-04-19 Thread Shermeen Khan
Hi everyone,

All my apologies in advance if this issue has been covered to death
already; I'm generally behind when it comes to discovering the latest
craze, but like the little engine that could, I keep chugging along
and trying. :).

Anyway, when I've finished reading a book in the audible app, it asks
me to rate it. Happy to share my opinion, I realize that I can only
give each section a maximum of four out of five. Does anyone know why
this is or how I can go about giving the full five stars for the
narrators and books I feel deserve it?

Sorry again if this has been covered.

Flagging all messages from a given domain as VIP on an IPhone 5S using IOS 8.3

2015-04-19 Thread Christopher Sabine
Hi folks. I need to know if I can flag all email addresses from a set of two
or three given domains (e.g. mydomain.com, mydomain.net, xyzdomain.com,
xyzdomain.net) as if they were on a VIP list. I need to be notified
immediately if I receive an email from any one of a couple of different
domains, but I don't know the email address-so I can't just add it to the
VIP list. I also need to know if this is possible in Outlook 2010 but I
realize that is off topic for this list.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Very Best,

Chris.

2015-04-19 Thread Michael McKay
Hello Chris! Yes you can flag messages. If you use the iPhone at the very
bottom after you read all your messages there is a flag move archive there's
one for reply or forward or whatever and when I believe to compose if you're
using voice over or Siri, you will hear it when you come to it will announce at
you double tap and follow the instructions.

I hope this helps.

Hi Cara,

Aha, that actually really explains it. I had thought it was a bit
peculiar that one could give a zero out of five rating, but I wouldn't
have put it past anyone, I guess. (I suppose you can really, really
hate a book and want to express your feelings haha).

Anyway, thank you. I'll happily rate on now.

 Hi Shermeen,

While it looks as if you cannot give above a 4 out of 5 rating, this is not
 actually the case.

Who ever labeled those graphics simply mislabeled them. The 4 out of 5 star
graphic is actually 5 out of 5. So instead of the stars going from 0 out of
5 to 4 out of 5 stars, They actually go from 1 out of 5 to 5 out of 5.

Hope this helps and do have a wonderful day!

Really frustrated trying to get Netflix audio description to work on either iPhone or Macbook Air with Silver Light

2015-04-19 Thread Christine Grassman
This morning I signed into Netflix on my iPhone and was able to start audio
description after a second go at the language options menu. However, since
then, I cannot get it to work. I have rebooted the phone, closed the app and
gone back in, signed out and signed back in . . . the option simply is not
showing up.
I decided to load Silver Light on my MacBook and it installed and played just
fine. But I could not figure out how to get to the controls, let alone the
language options menu, if this is indeed possible on the MacBook with Silver
Light. My son is really excited about listening to Daredevil with audio
description. Is anyone else having this issue, and can anyone offer a solution
or workaround?
Thanks.
Christine

How do I remove a nickname from Siri?

2015-04-19 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

Let me explain what's going on. In Siri, I can say Call Mom, and it dials
my Mom's phone number. The first time I did this I had to associate the Mom
nickname with the contact. Well, I don't know how I did it, but my Brother
and I are tied with my name. Is there a way to remove my name from my
Brother's contact? I figure there's a way, but I don't know how to do it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: My experience with Apple Pay.

2015-04-19 Thread Brent Harding
How do you figure out where on the machine to tap your phone to make it
work? From what I understood, you need to line up the little hole next to
the back camera with something on the payment terminal, unless people are
describing it badly that it doesn't really require you to tap in the correct
place.

I noticed that this is some sort of a bug. What you have to do, is go to a
Nother episode then go underling which options. You will see English of your
description as one of the options. Then, you can go to the previous episode
that you wanted to see. You can check language options then, then you will
see English audio description as an option. this was my experience...

RE: Flagging all messages from a given domain as VIP on an IPhone 5S using IOS 8.3

2015-04-19 Thread Christopher Sabine
Hi Michael. What I actually need to do is set the mail client to notify me
immediately if I receive an email address from one of a set of two or three
different domains. This is like adding an individual contact to a VIP list,
except that we don’t have the email address the recipient will be using except
that it will come from one of a list of two or three given domains. This is
different from flagging, I understand.

2015-04-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Thanks, I actually haven’t tried this since the iTunes update last week and
while I downloaded it, I haven’t actually installed it yet. I saw something
from Jonathan I think on Twitter that some of the fields like artist name, song
title and so on are more easily editable again, but haven’t checked it out yet.

Hey Sieghard, I just wanted to say thanks for writing up this tutorial and
sending it to the list. I've been working more with the music on my phone
lately, and creating some ring tones from my music was one of the things I
wanted to do. Your tutorial was just the ticket, and the archive of this list
is a great resource.

On 11/23/2014 7:11 PM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

Hello Listers,

As promised, here is as complete a guide as I could come up with describing how
you can make ringtones from your songs using iTunes 12. This has headings, both
level 1 and 2 which you can use if you want to get back to a particular
section. After explaining the process and after the “Clean up” heading is
another heading called “More details about adding to library and syncing” and
it goes into more details about how to correctly rename the file extension and
how to sync your tones to your phone.

I did it this way because for more advanced users some of my descriptions may
already contain more details than necessary, but for people who are new to
technology or less experienced with Windows commands it is hopefully useful.

I also realize that you can add ringtones to your library by copying them into
the “Automatically Add to Library” folder. If you prefer to do this than that’s
fine, I personally prefer to put stuff into the folder where it belongs and add
it to the library either by simply playing it or by using the “Add /File to
Library” or “Add Folder to Library” option in the iTunes File menu.

I wanted to provide a tutorial on how to make ringtones from songs since
several people asked for it and I did the same for iTunes 11. I don’t want to
start a debate on how to do it better by using a different program to create
the ringtone, if anybody feels they know of a better way than all I can say is
go ahead and create your own tutorial and this way people can choose which
method they want to use.

Creating ringtones from songs using iTunes 12

Note: These instructions are based on doing this on a Windows 7 laptop with
Jaws 16. Most of this should work fine with other screenreaders except of
course for Jaws specific commands like “route Jaws cursor to PC cursor” and
“left mouse click with Jaws”. You would simply have to know or find out which
are equivalent commands in Window Eyes, NVDA or whatever other screenreader you
might use.

Basic steps

1. Find the song you want

2. Press Control+I for Get Info, tab to the options button, tab to start and
end time and set end time to no more than 40 seconds.

3. Right click on your song and select Create AAC Version

4. Press Control+C on the newly created 40 second version of the song to copy
it to the clipboard, open your iTunes Media\Tones folder and use Control+V to
paste the song into the folder.

5. Go to the Tools menu of your Windows Explorer window, go to Folder Options
and the View tab, make sure Hide extensions for known file types

is Off.

6. Rename the .M4A extension to M4R.

7. Press enter on the newly renamed file to play it in iTunes, this
automatically adds it to your Tones library.

8. Connect your phone, make sure Sync All Tones is selected or if you sync
selected tones, make sure your new ringtone is checked, then sync your phone.

detailed instructions

1. Find the song you want to make into a ringtone in your Music library in
iTunes.

2. Right click, use the application menu key or Shift+F10 and select Get
Info. You can also use The shortcut key which is Control+I.

3. Tab to the Options button (should be 8 tabs) and activate it by pressing
the spacebar or enter.

Note that nothing obvious happens, but visually the Options content now is on
the screen and you have to tab to it. Unfortunately the cursor seems to go back
to the beginning of this entire screen, but instead of using tab about 15
times, you can use F6 about six or seven times to get to where you enter the
start and stop time for the ringtone.

Changing Start and Stop time

4. The first item you get to will just say Start read only, then if you tab
once there is a checkbox which is read as 0 checkbox not checked and if you
tab again you will be on the actual field where you can type in a start time
and which by default is always read as 0 o'clock read only.

The only way to get into the edit field for start and stop time that works for
me is as follows:

RE: Bluetooth Keyboards again--Questions

2015-04-19 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi Desi, There is a little bit of a lag between when you press the letter and
hear it especially if you have the keyboard set to announce characters. This is
even true on my iPhone 6. So, I either turn the volume done enough so it
doesn't bother me, or set keyboard announce to none. The nice thing with this
is that if you make a mistake and have to backspace, the characters you read
over are announced, but not the ones you type. My Logitech 811 keyboard is so
much nicer than the Apple keyboard I have in that the keys are concave. This
scared me a bit until I got it, but my fingers fit just exactly in the keys
which are rounded and not square and butted up against each other as they are
on the apple keyboard. So, I don't any more have to worry about pressing two
keys at once, There is enough space between to help prevent this without making
the keys too small, and I do have large hands.

Also, there is a slide switch to turn it on rather than the push button on the
apple which can get pressed accidently. It pairs with up to 3 keyboards, and it
is easy to pair, and keeps its settings.
 I hope this helps.

Neal

RE: difference between standard and encrypted backup?

2015-04-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Simon,

As Alex pointed out, as soon as you check the Encrypted backup option, you will
be prompted for a password, type it in and then tab and you have to retype it,
then tab again to OK and your encrypted backup will start. Keep in mind that
after that first time you can just choose “File”, “Devices” and “Backup” and
any future backups will be encrypted with the same password, but it won’t ask
you for that password any more unless you are trying to restore with iTunes.

I personally use a very simple password for this since after all this is for a
backup which lives on my computer only and if somebody stole my laptop they
would first have to crack my more complicated Windows login password before
they can get into iTunes.

Regards,

Sieghard

Yes, when you make the backup, you will be prompted for a password. This is the
password used to encrypt the backup, and it can be anything. That is, it need
not be your computer account's password, or your iCloud password, etc.

SETTING A SIMPLE PASSWORD ON iPHONE - I DID IT!

2015-04-19 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
Hi all,

Some of you know I was very reluctant to do this, just in case I couldn't get
in etc. Well, after lots of questions ... and a patient friend who answered
them for me, I decided I'd have a go with my 4S. The reason I'm telling you
this is to explain that, probably like others, I hadn't even really looked at
the settings that are given. When I came to carry out the process, I realised
that the default settings were really good, in that I was very unlikely to get
into trouble. This was a lesson for me to try to remember to look at settings
and was further brought home when I had the problem recently of not being able
to get rid of two button items that mysteriously appeared in my messages.
Again, I hadn't looked through the changes (additions) to settings following
the most recent upgrade.

Perhaps this might help others to have a good look around their settings after
upgrade and also to take the plunge and password their phone.

I'd really like to be able to use fingerprint but this isn't available for the
4S, so another reason to think of upgrading soon.

OK when your iPhone is connected to iTunes and you find your iPhone button
select it and arrow past the html area and you should find a table of items

Then stop interacting and arrow left and interact with the html area in there
you can select sync Tones and either sync all your tones or pick the option to
sync only selected tones!
If you choose to sync only selected ones there is a table of all the tones and
just arrow through them and check the ones you want!
After that stop interacting and arrow right and you should find a sync now

Re: Blind Mice Mart

2015-04-19 Thread Russ Kiehne

I saw the following on anouther list:
For those of you using IE8 and above, outlined below is a way to tame
SendSpace

completely and a lot easier than having to keep turning off active x and
mess with other settings.

1.From within IE8 hit alt t to open the tools menu then hit o for
options.

2.In the Options multi page dialog, you want to get to the security
tab. You can do this either by hitting control tab or shift tab then right
arrow.

3.You need to be on the first control of the security page, it will
say select a zone to view or change security settings

4.Hit right arrow to get to restricted sites.

5.Tab over to sites and press spacebar.

6.You will land on an add button so press spacebar.

7.You will be placed into an edit field. Just type in
http://www.sendspace.com

8.Tab to the Add button and press spacebar. Sendspace will now be
added to the list of restricted sites and you never have to touch this
again.

From now on, every time you visit SendSpace, it will be considered a

restricted site and you will not get any more popups or those annoying flash
ads and it will be a safe environment. Note that you will se on the
SendSpace page that your browser does not support Java and some other
warnings, but disregard them as you will be able to download normally but
safely and without all that nasty crap that SendSpace likes to give out.

I read this on another list and implemented this solution and it works like
a charm. I highly recommend you give it a try if you use IE8.

Hello
Is anyone using their phone to download audio described movies through
Blind Mice Mart. My desktop may be too old to be supported by freespace
which is where the movies are downloaded from. I keep getting an error
message from them. Using the phone I got to the right page on freespace
to

download the file I wanted but it wanted me to create a sign in. This was
not necessary using the desktop. Is this really a requirement of
freespace

when using the phone? Does anyone know?

Re: difference between standard and encrypted backup?

2015-04-19 Thread Harry Bell
If you intend to use the iTunes backup to restore from ( perhaps set up new
phone) turning off Find My Phone is essential. I am unclear whether you have to
turn the feature off before you do the backup - anyone more experienced out
there know the answer? Harry

But do remember that if you have Find My Phone turned on in your phone's
Settings, you will not be able in the future to restore your phone (or a new

As I understand it, a standard backup will back up everything on your
device, except sensitive information. An encrypted backup will back up
everything, no matter what. Essentially, then, restoring an encrypted
 backup will restore wifi passwords, app logins, and other personal details;
a standard backup will restore the apps and data, but you'll have to sign
back into everything. I imagine I'm missing pieces, but that's the basic
 idea.
