RE: Downgrading App

2015-08-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Gary,

You can uninstall iTunes and reinstall an older version, there are definitely
download sites where you can get them. However, ultimately you are better off
with the newer versions, accessibility issues will hopefully get fixed soon and
apart from this app thing iTunes 12 is pretty OK.

Subject: RE: Downgrading App

Hi Gary,

Unfortunately syncing apps to the phone from iTunes is somewhat broken in the
latest few iTunes versions. It is still possible, but the main list of apps
which you can choose from doesn’t read properly anymore, although I don’t know
how other screenreaders handle it. You didn’t say if you use a Mac or PC, all I
can give you are some pointers for a PC with the latest version of Jaws.

Anyhow, first of all, you of course have to connect your phone to the PC, then
open iTunes and go to your device section. I assume you know how to do this so
I won’t explain it in more detail, if you don’t know just email me directly and
I can try to give you more detailed information.

Once you activate the “iPhone” button in iTunes, tab a few times until you get
to the treeview which starts with “Summary”, all you have to do is arrow down
once to “Apps”.

Now tab four times and you should be in a search edit field which Jaws
announces as “Search Apps”. Write the name or part of the name of the app you
want to sync to your phone.

As an example, I just typed “Dream” into the search box. You don’t have to
press enter or anything, just tab out of the search box, the next thing you
land on should be a “Clear search text” button.

Tab again and Jaws should say “Apps table list view”.

Tab again and Jaws will now say (in my example) “Apps table list box, Voice
Dream Reader, read only”.

Tab again and Jaws will announce the size of the app, it will always say “Apps
table listview”, then the information (the size in this case in Mb) and then
“read only”.

Now the next tab takes you to where you want to be. If the app in question is
not installed on your iPhone, you will now come to the “Install” button. If the
app is already on your phone, that button will be a “Remove” button.

Activate the install button by pressing the spacebar, now unfortunately focus
will jump somewhere but if you tab a bunch of times again and find the item
again, the button will now say “Will Install”. This means you have now selected
the app to be installed/synced.

You can now tab around until you find the “Apply” button or you can use F6
which might be faster or you can just go to the File menu with Alt+F, then use
“v” to go to the “Device” submenu and then select “Sync”.

In earlier versions of iTunes all available apps were displayed in a nice
listview and you could simply arrow down through that list view and each app
had a checkbox which you could activate with the spacebar. Apps installed on
your phone would be checked, apps which were not but could be installed were
not. This way you could go and install or remove as many apps as you wanted all
at once.

Hope this works,

Sieghard

I don't know if this got out, so appologies for the repost.

I'm trying to restore a specific app to my iPhone. The accessibility was
damaged in the most recent version and I want to go backward. I've deleted the
latest version and have an earlier version on the PC. I can't figure out how
to proceed. I have checked Google and the archives but either don't see what I
need or don't understand what I read.

Help appreciated.

to flick up and down to do headings again do you find the roater setting
moves to actons or that wehn flicking through a search I tend to lose
track of where it is and ends up odd places in the search list. example:
Flicking up/down roater set to headings it'll go through like songs, top
albums, top vidios and sometimes vo seems to lose it's focus or againthe
roter setting moves from heading to action.

I'd just like to see if this is just me somehow or a problum that 8.4 has

Airdropping tones?

2015-08-16 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I've never messed with tones much, especially not outside of iTunes. My
question is this: could I take an m4r file and use Airdrop to copy it from my
Mac to an iPhone, then, on the phone, assign that file as a text or ring tone?
I can make m4r files with no problem, my question is what iOS will do--and will
let me do--once I Airdrop such a file. Has anyone ever tried this? Am I stuck
using iTunes? Thanks.

2015-08-16 Thread Rebecca Ilniski
Hi Ron. Let's see if you get this message. The only setting I can find
that has to do with the order of tweets is in the look and feel menu in
the settings in tweetings. The default setting is relevant and I
changed mine to 12 hour. 24 hour is another choice. I don't know if
this fixes the order of tweets but you can see what time the tweet was
sent.

If I recall correctly, control-up will jump you to the top of the screen, and
control-down will move to the bottom. Don't forget about control-option-k,
which will enter key describe mode. In this mode anything you press is spoken
and described instead of actually running commands. Press escape to exit this
mode.

Re: Downgrading App

2015-08-16 Thread Gary Petraccaro
Worked like a charm.

Anyhow, first of all, you of course have to connect your phone to the PC,
then open iTunes and go to your device section. I assume you know how to do
this so I won’t explain it in more detail, if you don’t know just email me
directly and I can try to give you more detailed information.

Once you activate the “iPhone” button in iTunes, tab a few times until you
get to the treeview which starts with “Summary”, all you have to do is arrow
down once to “Apps”.

Tab again and Jaws will announce the size of the app, it will always say
“Apps table listview”, then the information (the size in this case in Mb) and
then “read only”.

Now the next tab takes you to where you want to be. If the app in question
is not installed on your iPhone, you will now come to the “Install” button. If
the app is already on your phone, that button will be a “Remove” button.

  Sieghard

I'm not sure which lists you've already seen, but on the off chance this
wasn't one of them, there's Apple's list of VoiceOver commands for their

In looking at it quickly, I didn't see a command to jump to the bottom

iOS and incorrect TTS voice

2015-08-16 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So I have different languages selected in my language rotor. English US as
my default along with English US as one of my options with Spanish Mexico
and German.

The issue that I have is even though I have Spanish Mexico specifically
selected, The Spanish Spain (Castilian Spanish) is used when I am working in
translation apps like Google Translate or the various dictionary apps where
you can have selected text spoken in Spanish. The same goes for flash card
apps. I haven’t been able to change this behavior from within the individual
apps and like I said, the Spanish I have selected is totally different than
the one being used by all these apps

I’m wondering if this is a default behavior of iOS and can be considered a
bug of some sort or if it’s something having to do with each individual app
itself? I’m inclined to believe the former as it’s pretty consistent
throughout.

It’s frustrating as the accent I’m aiming for and used to is not the one I’m
being given even though I’ve specifically chosen it and don’t even have the
Spanish Spain in this instance downloaded on to my phone.

I’m studying for federal and state certification for legal and medical
interpretation and use these apps quite a lot for the more arcane
terminology particular to these disciplines. I am already bilingual and run
my own interpretation agency, but am going for specialization in these
particular fields.

Indeed, The Spanish Spain Voiceover comes up when I switch keyboards too.

Has anyone else encountered this issue and have they been able to work out
how to get around it?

RE: Downgrading App

2015-08-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Sieghard

I'm trying to restore a specific app to my iPhone. The accessibility was

Subject: Important Moderator Note - New list policy and a request

Hello All,

For the last few years we have had a policy where new members to the list are
moderated. Raul has seen to managing this so that members are able to post soon
after they join this list. This takes a lot of work to maintain and Raul has
done a stellar job with all that he has done for VIPhone.

Since Raul has had other responsibilities of late, I will be the sole list
moderator in addition to continuing as list owner.

>From now on, the posting privileges of new members will no longer be moderated.

Requests to join this list will be vetted as they always are, so spammers and
bots etc will continue to be screened in this way to keep this list the high
quality informational resource that it is.

be aware though, since I am now temporarily the sole list moderator, when you
communicate with me concerning list business, it will take me several days to
get back with you. Plan on one week. I will of course, try to return your notes
earlier than this but do plan on a week from the time you write me to receive a
response.

This does not mean that any list actions will always be delayed. If I can
manage something quickly for you, I will absolutely do that but you may not
hear back from me right away. My apologies in advance for this, but this is
life right now and this will have to do for the moment. I sincerely appreciate
your understanding in this. :)

Now, as mentioned above, in regard to new members having been placed on
moderated status, there have been a number of people who have written me of
late to say they have had trouble posting. Please bear in mind that this
occasionally can be a Google issue. However, having said this, let me offer my
sincere and deepest apologies to anyone over the past months who has
encountered (or is encountering) issues posting to the group.

Please, even if you have already emailed me recently about difficulties in
posting, may I impose on you one last time and ask that you email me one more
time, as soon as you can so I can address all of these issues beginning this
week?

Also, to those of you who would be possibly interested in assisting with list
moderation, feel free to write me at your convenience.

As you all know, this is a voluminous list with very high traffic. So certain
list tasks are more time-consuming than others. If you would like to help out,
and you have a good understanding of this list over a few months / years, then
please, by all means, feel free to drop me a note.

Otherwise, let me just thank you for reading this and for offering your time
and assistance to each other on this list. You are what makes this list the
wonderful resource that it is!

Thank you and talk with you soon!

Have a great weekend / week!

Cheers!

Removing "Connect" from Apple Music and adding back Playlists

2015-08-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi,

Thought this might be of interest to some who like to have a Playlists tab
again at the bottom of the Music app and get rid of the entire Connect
stuff. Here is how you do it:

1. Go to Settings, General, Restrictions

2. At the top it says "Enable Restrictions" and by default this is
turned off.

Turn it on, but be careful since it will ask you for a passcode and as far
as I know this is not the same passcode you use to unlock your phone since
it asks you to enter a 4-digit passcode and then to reenter it. Make sure
you use one you can remember because otherwise if you ever want to turn the
Restrictions back off you can't do it. I just used the same passcode that I
use to unlock my phone.

3. Once you have set a passcode, swipe down the list until you find
"Apple Music Connect".

4. Make sure you get the context, by default all items listed are "On"
and that does not mean they are "On" as in "restricted". At the top the
heading says "Allow" so that means if an item is On it is allowed or, in
other words, there is no restriction. Turn "Apple Music Connect" off by
double tapping on it, then just exit the Settings app or go back to the main
settings screen by using the back button or scrub gesture.

5. Now if you go to the Music app, "Connect" is gone from the 5 tabs
at the bottom and it is replaced with "Playlists". This gives you easy
access to all your playlists and if you now go to "My Music" the "All Music"
and "Playlists" selection is gone since you have all your Playlists
accessible via the Playlists tab. You now have the following 5 tabs at the
bottom:

For You

New

Radio

Playlists

My Music

>From what I have heard on Podcasts so far it appears the Connect feature is
little more popular or successful than the old "Ping" service Apple at one
point came up with. I think people just want to listen to music and maybe
share what they are listening to on Facebook or Twitter, but it seems they
don't care too much about the rest.

I did, by the way, figure out that I had to turn on "iCloud Music Library"
in Settings and Music on my iPhone and now it appears all my artists, albums
and songs show up even those where it says "iCloud Needs Upload" in iTunes
on my laptop.

Regards,

Sieghard

iTunes message: iCloud needs upload

2015-08-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

I have signed up for the Apple Music free trial and I am curious about a
message Jaws reads with many of my songs. It says "iCloud needs upload",
below is one example:

Penny Lane, iCloud Need upload, Time 3:02, The Beatles, Album The Beatles
1967 - 1970 [Disc 1], Genre Rock, Track # 2 of 14, not loved

I just let Jaws speak it and copied this directly from the Jaws speech
history. If I right click on the song I see no option to upload the track,
but I do have a "Remove download" option in the menu that comes up. In the
iTunes preferences in the General tab I do have "Show Apple Music" checked
and there is also a checkmark next to an item called "iCloud Music Library"
followed by my Apple Id email.

I like the idea of Apple Music and love the SIRI integration, but I do agree
with many reviews and opinions that it is complicated and apparently there
are still issues which need to be fixed.

I used to strictly manage what music I have on my iPhone via iTunes, but
after I had to do a factory restore after briefly running a couple of early
versions of the iOS 9 beta and downgrading again to 8.4, I have not yet
synced any music to my iPhone manually. If I open the music app and go to
the "My Music" tab, I see a bunch of music which is all stuff I bought from
iTunes, but nothing else. Shouldn't the music on my laptop which is in my
iTunes library upload to my iCloud Music Library and then be available on my
iPhone?

Regards,

Sieghard

STUIPID, BUT ...

2015-08-16 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
Hi all,

I don't seem to be hitting on the right answer for my search, which is
obviously my fault, but need a list of keyboard commands to use with iOS8 and
the Apple keyboard. I need specifically to do things like jump to the bottom
of a screen to get to the buttons in email but, just can't find the right list
...

Any help most welcome!

Thanks.

RE: KNFB Reader In-App Purchases

2015-08-16 Thread SSEric
When I search the App Store for KNFB KNFB Reader comes up. I double tap that
and I get the screen with a button for app, developer and reviews. The next
button is price. Another swipe lands me on In-App Purchases. Swipe again and
I and on the bottom tabs starting with Featured. However, if I swipe back
from Featured I do not hear In-App Purchases. I did have someone look at the
screen and In-App Purchases was there.

Just another curiosity... Thanks for advising no in-app purchases.

Haven't seen any in-app purchases so far but maybe Knfb Reader will support
different reading voices, or perhaps it does already. I haven't explored
that.

RE: SlowApple

2015-08-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Not really, but I do have this issue with Audible downloads. On WiFi they
sometimes are incredibly slow as in slow like on dial-up and if I turn off WiFi
while the download is going on and it switches to 3G (no LTE yet where I live)
it suddenly starts pooring in. Audible support tells me this could be a router
issue as in a setting in my router and I am actually just waiting to find a
time when I can talk to their elevated support as they want to connect to my
computer to take a look at the settings.

Hi,

I believe each carriers implementation of it varies.
AT&T, for example, it states that you’ll be using wi-fi if your cellular
coverage is nonexistent or poor.

New iOS versions are usually released in the same week the newer generation of
iPhones are released. It was always September or October. So, when the iPhone
six S comes out, iOS nine will be downloading in the same time, probably two
days earlier to reduce pressure on the servers.

I have Sprint, but I haven't noticed anything. Anyone who has Sprint, email
me and we can check it out together.

It's probably about the same as it would be with good signal. Phone calls
pretty much are what they are unless you had another Sprint person using it,
and then it might go HD. I discovered they made the error messages sound
really good if you dial the wrong thing, but that's about the only higher
quality thing I heard.

Re: iOS 8.4.1

2015-08-16 Thread Harry Bell
I spoke too soon praising iOS 8.4.1!! have updated my Mac to Yosemite latest
and itunes 12.2.2 - and the results are terrible!! Before the update to iTunes,
I had about 20 tracks Mis-categorised as Apple Music, which in reality had been
uploaded from CD. Now there are suddenly THOUSANDS of tracks Mis-labelled as
Apple Music!! Of course, this does mean that my iPhone 5S with iOS 8.4.1 no
longer throws up "This item cannot be downloaded" - but only because I am still
within the 3 month free trial period. But once that period is up, I assume they
will no longer play.
What a shambles! I do hope Apple will fix this problem some time soon?

Subject: Something I hope they fix in the new iOS

Hi all,
I am not using the beta, so I am not on the beta users list. I suspect that
some who are also here. And that is why I am raising this question. I don't
expect an answer as to whether it has been fixed, because we all know about the
glorious and stupid nDA for a public beta, which is being violated all over the
place in the mainstream. But, never mind. It seems like there are a certain
number of apps or things within apps, where voiceover will not scroll. Or the
machine will not scroll with voice over enabled using the three finger flick up
or the three finger flick left or right. Cases in point are Netflix and the
book browser within Amazon Kindle when running it on an iPad. I don't know
frankly, if this is an Apple problem or something that the developers should
fix. What I do know, is that if Apple can fix it, it would be great, since the
developers are not likely to do so. These are just the things that come
immediately to mind. I know I have seen this problem of the device and
voiceover not scrolling together, or not scrolling when voiceover is on. And it
is a big deal that Apple should fix if they can, even if it isn't technically
their problem. We, the end-users are the loser.

Playlist question in applemusic

2015-08-16 Thread Anne Günther

Hi
I'd like to know if there's a actual reason for some strange playlist
behvior or if it's applemusic not properly working.
If I open the mini player and go to the more options. I have in one
playlist the option to delete that specific title from that playlist. In
another playlist this option doesn't show up. Both playlists are self
created.

Does that make sense to anyone else?

Hi Carol,

I've written to one of the tech people at HIMS to let them know about the
lag in writing and correcting text using Smart Beetle. I am not sure - nor
do I hold my breath - whether they will take note of the problem. But I
thought I'd let them know anyway because that's quite a point against buying
their product which otherwise is very attractive.

I will write to accessibility at Apple as I always do when I encounter the
problem. I haven't done so so far because I wasn't sure whose patch it is.
it's getting rather confusing who is responsible for what.

Please keep my e-mail in your contacts and let me know what you've found
out. And maybe if you wish, please send me your e-mail address for my
records privately. I will keep in touch with respect to Smart Beetle.

Best wishes

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Thanks so much for doing the test for me.

I wasn't surprised by your results because we have Braille Sense machines
here and had experienced this lag. There are two reasons why I wanted to
add the Smart Beetle, partily because it's that much smaller for taking
around and, secondly, because I was hoping the lag would have been solved
by the introduction of the Beetle.

However, all is not yet lost because I think there probably will soon be a
new driver and, well, I'm just holding on and hoping that this will solve
at least a good part of the lagging. I have mentioned this to the
Accessability Team at

accessibil...@apple.com

and I'd really advise you to do the same just as soon as you can.

I'm also going to double check with HIMS that Apple are supposed to do the
driver and not HIMS themselves.

If you're not a very fast Braillist then all may well not be lost for you,
especially if you're prepared to make that cuppa whilst you wait for the
translation. I feel fairly sure that the problem is the same whether
you're copying from the clipboard or writing in "real time", and it's a
lag in translation, I think. However, I'm not the expert, so we'll just
go on telling them all what we know and what's important to us.

I will write to the Accessability Team again myself to highlight this
issue, in view of the recent introduction of Smart Beetle and what I've
gleaned so far, so then they can't be saying they didn't know all about
it. . . ..

By the way, if we're rather pushing this on list and it's preferred we
take it off list then please, George or someone, tell us that this is the
case.

I know Jackie is interested, but would hate to bore everyone to death.
Anyway, folks, please feel free to use that delete key!

Please keep in touch with me with any developments, Andrew, and I'll do
the same.

Cheers and thanks for your input on this.

Dear Carol,

I’m afraid I’ve got bad news. I’ve done the test as you’ve asked me to
and there is quite a considerable lag in both instances: using the text
input straight into the edit field and using the clipboard method. This
is disappointing. I’m not the fastest Braille writer and yet the lag was
definitely there even though the text was quite short. also, I found
editing a document quite a laborious task again because of the lag. It
took sometimes a few seconds for the cursor to route to the right letter
and when inserting a letter or letters again it took a few seconds for the
text to appear on the display. Very disappointed.

One more thing I want to try is pairing the Smart Beetle with my iPhone as
a bluetooth keyboard and inputing the text from that mode to see whether
it is the Braille mode that slows it down. Apparently it is possible to
use combo mode with smart beetle, i.e. pairing it both as a Braille
display and as a bluetooth keyboard and then changing how you use it using
a shortcut key. I will have to read some more about it. In a way, I’m
anxious now that I made a wrong choice and yet I would have struggled to
raise more finances for a more expensive product. Maybe not all is lost
and maybe, just maybe, HIMS will improve their software, and maybe once
Apple incorporates Smart Beetle driver into its OS it will speed things
up.

Sorry I have no better news.
