 Hi!
Few years ago Fleksy was commonly used amongst blind iOS users. I tried it
back then but since it didn't support my native language I gave it up.
Today I installed the new Fleksy keyboard which now supports more than 40
languages including Croatian but it seems to me it doesn't work as weel as
it worked earlier. I didn't try to type in English so I can't say is this
for fact or the Croatian dictionary is bad. I noticed it only comes up
with suggestions with the same first letter and it doesn't suggest other
words based on letters positions as id did before in English.
What are your experiences with the new fleksy?

It depends on what kind of detail you want.
Blind Square will give you the streets you are crossing and direction you
are heading without having to know the route the driver is using.

I would set Blind Square to just streets.
If you know what gps the driver is using and what route you could try to
match that with Google Maps or Mapquest and still have Blind Square
announcing streets.
You could use Apple Maps, though I've not gotten it set up to speak street
names, but I know others have. I probably could if I took the time to mess
with it.
Or, you could use Seeing Eye GPS, which speaks the streets as you come to
them and you can also set up turn by turn directions, but it is the more
expensive option.
But, I would never say one way is the best as that depends on personal
preference.

HTH,
Richard

Apple tv and uverse

2015-12-27 Thread Melissa Tucker
Has anyone successfully connected their apple tv to their tv and a uverse box?
I just got a new apple tv and want to be able to hook it to the uverse box and
my new tv without disconnecting cables? I know that this can be done because I
looked at some forms on uverse about people doing this. I am just wondering
about this from the accessibility level of this. I know there are extra port
on the box but don't know what it is used for. I don't know if it's an hdmi
port. I know my new tv has the hdmi port. Thanks for any thoughts on this.
We still have uverse because my husband likes the sports channels and I don't
know what networks I have until I set up the apple tv.

Hi. Does the full version include the third party keyboard and this document
package? What is the document package? What does it include? I bought the full
version and now the option to buy the other packages is gone. Does that mean I
already have them? I guess what I want to know is if I only were to have bought
this documents package for $16, would that have sufficed. Should I have bought
that and not the whole full version? Hope my questions make sense. Thank you so
much for reading

iphone 5s question

2015-12-27 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:
I have an iPhone 5s. I have icloud, dropbox, camera role backing up to dropbox,
and all camera items backing up automatically to icloud, and downloading picts
and videos to my Mac, and ipad.
I received an iPhone 6s for Christmas. I have everything transferred to the
phone. I want to give mom my 5s. How can I remove all data from the phone, but
not have it erase data picts, etc from icloud and dropbox?

Ruby,
Am I right in remembering that you at the moment have a for S? and that you are
running the latest iOS 9.2? because, if so, I have both for S and the six, both
running the latest, and my four s is behaving very well. before you pay out a
load of money for the six, have you reset the phone and have you reset network
settings? as a last option, you could try resetting back to factory default. I
am thinking that it might not be your phone but some kind of dodgy download or
some other software issue that has arisen. if you are unhappy about the outlay
for an iPhone 6, perhaps, it will be worth trying all of these things before
you do so…

just my thoughts and I hope they're helpful to you,

Sonos accessibility

2015-12-27 Thread Laura
Hi guys

I got a Sonos playbar for Christmas. Love the sound and setting it up was
incredibly straight forward.

Couple of questions, though. I read somewhere before purchasing (old Apple Vis
thread, I think?) that the Mac Sonos app was completely accessible. This
doesn’t seem to be the case for me. I’m seeing a lot of unlabelled buttons, and
no easy way to pick a music source. Am I missing something? I’m using the
latest version.

Second thing: is anyone using Apple music through Sonos? I can’t seem to find a
way to navigate the “my music” section by letter — so if I want to find a song
starting with P, I can’t just jump to that letter and scroll from there. I have
a lot of music, so having to scroll through every song/album to find something
I want isn’t ideal, especially when search on the beta currently only searches
Apples Music, and isn’t limited to individual my music libraries. I know it’s
only beta, so could be a bug. Just wondering if anyone has got it to work, or
if there’s an alternative and quicker method of navigation I could use
meantime. I’m assuming it’s an accessibility issue, because I can’t imagine
there wouldn’t be more comment on it if every user was coming up against this
problem.

Cheers for any input.

Laura

When you first open the Hulu app, you'll need to wait several seconds, then
voiceover will start to speak. Once this happens, you can actually navigate

Re: Phone constantly requiring my Apple ID and password please help

2015-12-27 Thread Donna
Have you gone to Settings, General, Restrictions and confirmed the iTunes
settings there? Do you have automatic updates turned on? Go to Settings, iTunes
& app store to check the settings there. If you have automatic updates turned
on and restrictions set to require a password immediately, this could be the
cause of your problem.

RE: I wish VoiceOver didn't try to pronounce what it thinks abbriviations mean, but it can be humorous.

2015-12-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Kevin,

This happens to me, also.

The other day, I was trying to locate a friend of mine in my contacts, whose
name is Al Jones. I couldn’t find him until I realized that VoiceOver was
pronouncing his name as Alabama Jones. I felt so stupid and then got a little
miffed at VoiceOver for trying to do too much.

I wonder if there is a workaround for this?

(smile)

Hi.

I was in the NFL Mobile app on my iPhone 5C running the latest iOs. I wanted
to hear the game between Arizona and Green Bay. I got there, and was selecting
the feed I wanted. The app gives you updates about who has the ball, and where
it is on the field. They use abbreviations for the teams. GB was used for
Green Bay. I was navigating through the info on the screen, and was surprised
to hear the ball was on the gigabytes 25. I know whoever is programming
VoiceOver to give information means well, but I wish they’d just let
abbreviations say their letters. VoiceOver isn’t the only one who does this.
I never knew, for example about Hartford, Court, or my Physician was Drive
Johnson. Oh well, it is humorous in a way, but there is sometimes too much of
a good thing.

Just thought I’d share this observation.

Have a good day, and don’t work too hard.

If you bought all packs than just activate the MBraille Kb from

Hi. Does the full version include the third party keyboard and this document package? What is the document package? What does it include? I bought the full version and now the option to buy the other packages is gone. Does that mean I already have them? I guess what I want to know is if I only were to have bought this documents package for $16, would that have sufficed. Should I have bought that and not the whole full version? Hope my questions make sense. Thank you so much for reading

Hi Everyone,

I am interested in hearing from people with Direct TV. We are considering
switching to Direct through AT Is the Direct TV app accessible for both
the IPad and IPhone? Can you scroll through the list of channels and hear
the program name followed by a double tap to select that channel? Also are
you able to use the dvr function?

Thank you in advance,

Re: I wish VoiceOver didn't try to pronounce what it thinks abbriviations mean, but it can be humorous.

2015-12-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I agree we should let Apple know about things that need fixing or
improving on the iPhone. As you said, Apple won't know what to fix or
change if they don't hear from us. I've sent many a suggestion to the
Apple feedback site and accessibility related issues to their
accessibility mailing list.

I won't be sending in a message about the abbreviation expansion though,
since as I said, it doesn't bother me personally.

What I didn't understand, and where we may not agree, is that I don't
think it makes sense to mention the American's with Disabilities Act
when talking about the abbreviation expansion. I don't think it's an
employment issue. I'm not sure if that's what you were trying to say or
not though.

I disagree that there's nothing Apple can do. Apple can definitely work
with Nuance to get a toggle added as to whether abbreviations are
expanded or not, and then Apple can include a setting for this toggle in
VoiceOver settings. I suspect Apple has quite a bit of influence with
Nuance, and Nuance would listen to Apple when it comes to a feature
request.

I find it just an inconvenience myself, and I have other things I'd
rather have Apple address which I consider a higher priority, so I wont'
be dropping a note to Apple accessibility myself.

Unable To Send Email From My Phone

Hi,

I tried to send an email to the list using my phone earlier. I am sure that

receive messages from the list, friends, and other mailing lists just fine.
When responding to others, my messages are not bounced back.

Again, thank you in advance for any help.

I agree with Gordon. Unfortunately there's nothing Apple really can do,
Nuance programs these voices. I'd bug them about it if it bothers you. On my
end, I use Alex on my phone and he says things correctly. The only time he
says gigabyte is if I put a number before it. For example, 2 gb.

Does Nuance not have a dictionary as does Jaws. If it had, you could instruct
it that when it saw GB etc, it was to read the letters, and not try to gainsay

Re: Instant pot multi use appliance with accessible iPhone app

2015-12-27 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Rick. I wish I had known this earlier. There was a big sale on the
regular instant pot before Christmas. And I was looking into purchasing it, but
then I read an article that seemed to indicate that there was a touch screen on
the front. So that made it sound like it was not going to work too well for a
totally blind person. I've never actually seen one. I guess I will have to keep
looking for a sale.

Hi,
Actually, same with Samantha. If I put: 2GB, I'll hear giga ytes. But if I put
GB, I won't hear giga bytes. I'll just hear g b. Although, for SD, she does say
South Dacota, (excuse spelling).

It's hard for me to understand this message, so I apologize if I get it
wrong, but I don't think a text to speech engine trying to pronounce
abbreviations has anything to do with the American's with Disabilities
Act. I can't think of a situation where someone would be at a
disadvantage in an employment situation because a synthesizer expanded
an abbreviation.

Hello Kevin,

This happens to me, also.

The other day, I was trying to locate a friend of mine in my contacts,
whose name is Al Jones. I couldn’t find him until I realized that
VoiceOver was pronouncing his name as Alabama Jones. I felt so stupid

Hi.

I was in the NFL Mobile app on my iPhone 5C running the latest iOs. I
wanted to hear the game between Arizona and Green Bay. I got there,
and was selecting the feed I wanted. The app gives you updates about
who has the ball, and where it is on the field. They use
abbreviations for the teams. GB was used for Green Bay. I was
navigating through the info on the screen, and was surprised to hear
the ball was on the gigabytes 25. I know whoever is programming
VoiceOver to give information means well, but I wish they’d just let
abbreviations say their letters. VoiceOver isn’t the only one who
does this. I never knew, for example about Hartford, Court, or my
Physician was Drive Johnson. Oh well, it is humorous in a way, but
there is sometimes too much of a good thing.

Just thought I’d share this observation.

Have a good day, and don’t work too hard.

mr. chaltain,

I apologize to this, but it is my last effort. like I have no idea what

about our visions. but I am talking about reading minds. you don't see what
I know and I don't see what yo know.

apple officials and technicians at apple stores did say if there are
problems keep notifying apple headfquarter more often and they would do
their best to improve to satisfy you how will apple know that yo are not
happy about something? mr. turner did talk with apple accessiblity and
sorted out. that is wonderful.I only give yo the note what apple officials
said to me in past saying that they would be happy if any blind people can
notify some issues, then they would fix the problems. they can't be so sure
if some work and some are not working. I hope this helps you.

or even, go to apple store and show techniciian as tecyhnician can see the
problem and technician file report. same with me showing up at apple store
and let tecnician seeing for himself and he saw what happened and he tried
his and realized the problems. same with technicians who are authorized by
apple at att store, verizon store, best buy, and other stores.

are yo going to contact with apple accessiblity to share your feedback???

I disagree that there's nothing Apple can do. Apple can definitely work
with Nuance to get a toggle added as to whether abbreviations are
expanded or not, and then Apple can include a setting for this toggle in
VoiceOver settings. I suspect Apple has quite a bit of influence with
Nuance, and Nuance would listen to Apple when it comes to a feature request.

I find it just an inconvenience myself, and I have other things I'd
rather have Apple address which I consider a higher priority, so I wont'
be dropping a note to Apple accessibility myself.

When I bought my iPhone 5 in 2012, I was provided a one hour tutorial
on voiceOver on at Apple store when I told them that this was my first
cell phone ever. After the tutorial, I realized how many fundamentals
I needed to learn and to become accustomed to using a touch screen
interface. Even though the trainer at the Apple store was sighted, he
was as proficient at voiceOver as experienced blind foiceOver users.
It took me two to three months of practice to become comfortable
navigating the iPhone's touch screen interface. this is something
that doesn't come through teaching but through practice.

Mary, at least the model I have is not touch screen. The buttons are sort of
like raised bubbles so I could see how maybe a sighted person would think it
was a touch screen.

I just looked at the BT version and it's currently selling for $179 which is
substantially lower than it was when I purchased my original instant pot. It
was close to $300 then so $179 really looks like a deal since the standard 6qt
model sells for $118. I'd definitely spend the extra $60 for the convenience
and better accessibility of the BT model. I'm thinking about ordering one but
need to listen to that podcast first.

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

Thanks, Rick. I wish I had known this earlier. There was a big sale on the
regular instant pot before Christmas. And I was looking into purchasing it, but
then I read an article that seemed to indicate that there was a touch screen on
the front. So that made it sound like it was not going to work too well for a
totally blind person. I've never actually seen one. I guess I will have to keep
looking for a sale.

I wish VoiceOver didn't try to pronounce what it thinks abbriviations mean, but it can be humorous.

2015-12-27 Thread Kevin Minor

VoiceOver to give information means well, but I wish they'd just let
abbreviations say their letters. VoiceOver isn't the only one who does this.
I never knew, for example about Hartford, Court, or my Physician was Drive
Johnson. Oh well, it is humorous in a way, but there is sometimes too much of
a good thing.

Just thought I'd share this observation.

Have a good day, and don't work too hard.

RE: Instant pot multi use appliance with accessible iPhone app

2015-12-27 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi there Mary. I don't have the BT version of the Instant Pot but I do have
their standard version that is a pressure cooker, slow cooker, and also sautes
among other things.

I just wanted to let you know that the Instant pot is most definitely very
useable by a blind person. I use mine at least once or twice a week. I simply
made a Braille chart of the various buttons along with what they are and their
default cook times. I keep this taped to the inside of a cabinet door just
above the Instant Pot for easy reference. In addition, this cooker also has
plus and minus buttons as well as a manual setting which I actually prefer so
you can set your own cooking time if you don't want to use the presets.

The buttons are definitely fairly tactile but I nevertheless put some lock dots
on them for an easier feel.

The cooker is also very safe. There is no way you can open it once it comes up
to pressure.

I've never seen the BT version so can't say the buttons and layout are the same
but their standard pot is quite useable. Pressure cooking save a ton of time
for all kinds of different dishes with the big advantage that all of the flavor
is locked into whatever you're cooking.

I'm definitely going to check out that podcast and see what this BT version is
all about.

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

Hi all,
There has been a lot of talk on certain cooking related websites this past year
about an appliance known as an instant pot. It is a multi use appliance, which
combines the functionality of slow cooker, pressure cooker, rice cooker, sauté
pan, and some other stuff. I was interested in this device, until I finally
found an article that went into enough detail to convince me that it would not
be usable by a blind person.
Then just today, I found a podcast done by Victor Saren on applevis. He
demonstrates the Bluetooth app which makes the most expensive variant of the
instant pot accessible to blind people. This is not a cheap appliance. But it
may be under someone's Christmas tree tomorrow. I would be very curious if
there's anyone on any of these lists who has or will be getting this pot and
how you like it and the app. There are recipes on the instant pot website. And
I have found some recipes on another website. You can also adapt pressure
cooker recipes for it, but it cooks at a slightly lower pressure than the usual
stovetop pressure cookers. The app also lets you enter your own recipes. There
is also going to be or is, an android app

I have given some suggestions for braille users, and also there are other

it would be very helpful if yo share your views and your thoughts. it would
be easier.

same idea, apple officials don't know what you know and you don't know what

I wrote Apple Accessibility about this earlier today. I'd suggest everyone
who would like VoiceOver to stop guessing at abbreviations would write them
as well and ask them to either stop it completely or provide an exception
dictionary that we can use to fix pronunciations.

Hello Kevin,

This happens to me, also.

The other day, I was trying to locate a friend of mine in my contacts, whose
name is Al Jones. I couldn’t find him until I realized that VoiceOver was
pronouncing his name as Alabama Jones. I felt so stupid and then got a
little miffed at VoiceOver for trying to do too much.

I wonder if there is a workaround for this?

Vocalizer voices do that on every platform, weather it's iOS's or OS X's
Voiceover, NVDA and Jaws. Like I said, Alex doesn't do that, and that's who I
use all the time. I might use one of the Siri voices here and there, which I
might add are also owned by Nuance as well, but I lean back on Alex. Just keep
that in mind, it's not just an Apple issue, it's everywhere else too. Nuance
would have to reprogram their voices so that it would ignore abbreviations or
make them smarter like Apple does with Alex. Also, they would have to do that
on every platform.

Hi all,

I feel privileged to write to you as a proud new user of voiceover user on
Iphone 6s. It will be great if you could help me get started on using the
inbuilt braille virtual keyboard. Thanks so much.

Warmly,

Hema.

Re: Hi, this is a new user of Iphone 6s

2015-12-27 Thread Devin Prater
Okay, I'll start off as if you've not got it in your rotor, so sorry if its
boring for a few novels or so, lol.
First, you have to know how to use the rotor, which is how you access
on-the-fly features of voiceover. Its almost like the alt+control+arrow key
thing Window-eyes has, but with different options, but the idea is the same. To
turn the rotor to select options to change, put two fingers on the screen, then
twist the fingers clockwise or counterclockwise. You'll hear things like
characters, words, headings… things like that. To adjust that option, like to
move by characters for example, twist to characters, then flick down. That's
the basic usage of the rotor.
Now, we can go on and get the braille screen input working. Go to your
homescreen, then find the settings app. Double tap on settings when you hear
it. Then, find general, within the settings app and double tap general. Next,
find accessibility and double tap that. Then, find voiceover and double tap
that. Don't worry, you won't turn it off. Then, find rotor, and double tap
that. Now, find braille screen input, and double tap that. It should say that
it is selected, which is what you want. Now, go to the home screen, and I'll
show you a neet trick with braille screen input. Twist the rotor to braille
screen input, and turn the phone to landscape mode, where it long instead of
tall. Yes, that's the bes way I can explain it. Now, the braille screen input
is active, and you can start typing, but if it ever starts putting in wrong
characters, press dots 4-5-6, then dots 1-2-3 quickly, making almost an equals
sign, in math, … if you know nimeth code, but with dots 5 and 2 included. If
you do it quick enough, almost the quickness of double tapping, you'll hear
"dot positions calibrated". This means that where ever you placed your fingers
for the 456-123 gesture, that's where the dots will be, bt don't worry about
being exact. I know I'm not the most steady person, but my brailling usually
works well. Now, about the home screen, start typing the name of an app. Yes,
you can search for apps in this way. To choose a suggestion, which also works
for words in text fields, swipe up or down. To type a space, swipe right with
one finger. To press "enter" on an app, which also works in text fields, swipe
right with two fingers. To backspace a letter, swipe left with one finger. To
backspace a whole word, swipe left with two fingers. When you're searching for
apps, only 6-dot braille can be used. When in text fields, swipe left with
three fingers to change from six-dot and contracted braille, or if you're on a
plus-sized phone, you can use 8-dot braille for super-acurate ascii input, lol.
Also, if you find that you move around a lot, and the phone keeps going into
portrate mode, or table top mode, put it into landscape and swipe up with three
fingers.

RE: Battery usage and level indicator

2015-12-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kimberly,

Just recalibrate your battery by fully discharging it and that is to the point
where the iPhone turns off because the battery totally runs out. Then charge it
overnight and repeat once more, i.e. use it again and let it fully discharge.
You can speed this up by doing some battery intensive task like streaming video
or turning on a GPS app. After the second shut-off once again charge it up
fully, then do what you normally do, i.e. run it down to 20% or so and charge
it and see if this fixes your issue. There is no need to prevent yourself from
getting phone calls by putting the phone into airplane mode to charge, I doubt
it would do so much faster than if it is just sitting there with the screen
locked.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Battery usage and level indicator

Hi,

Ever since yesterday something weird is going on with my battery level
indicator. When I plug in the phone, the indicator says charging but the
percentage shown either increases very slowly or not at all. I'm not sure if
there is a problem with my battery or the indicator.

I have done all the usual stuff like empty the app switcher, reboot the phone,
reset network settings but nothing has corrected the issue. Previously my phone
would charge really fast when placed in airplane mode, but now even airplane
isn't doing the trick.

When I look under battery in settings, I see a standby time of 25 hours and a
usage of 22 hours which seems pretty normal.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Anything I can do to try and fix the
problem short of going to the Apple Store?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

RE: cracked my ipad air glass

2015-12-27 Thread SSEric
It was an iPhone, but a friend ordered parts on line and used a You Tube
video to replace his broken glass. It cost him $35.

I talked with a local repair shop about my Touch possibly needing a battery.
They said it would be $60 to replace it. I say that just to indicate you may
have local people who do that sort of work.

Re: iPhone classes

2015-12-27 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
When I started using an iPhone 4 back in March of 2010 I had the very same
questions and doubts about using any sort of iDevice with a touch screen. But
I'm the adventurous sort, and I dived right in. Thank God I had help from a
coworker who was adept at using VoiceOver and she introduced me to the basic VO
gestures. Having mastered those basic gestures, I've found and am convinced
that mastery of those essential gestures is key to doing whatever you want to
do on an iPhone or an iPad, no matter what app you install and work with. I
also have found Ana Dresner's books instrumental in helping me discover what
the device is capable of; with their conversational, casual tone, her books
show that she has a real knack for piquing your interest and, importantly,
removing the fear factor that inevitably accompanies exploring unfamiliar
territory. I recommend her books gighly to all of my students. Jonathan
Mosen's books are also very handy. Read at least one of thosh books, find some
folks who already use an iPhone so you can get some valuable tips, and don't be
afraid to explore, dig in and get your hands dirty, so to speak. You'll be
glad you did.
