Re: Voice speech samples.

2016-10-03 Thread Brett

Hi,

Can you let us know the steps you are using to get there?

I go to Settings, General, VoiceOver, speech. I then tap on the language, the
default voice is shown, I tap on it. This opens a dialog showing the available
voices. There is a Play Sample button next to each available voice. Clicking
this button plays the sample.

If this doesn't work, I don't know what else to suggest.

Cheers Brett.

triple click. I guess that's when you had to.

Hi Rajmund,
I guess my problem was, I didn't know quite when to do the triple
click home. The first thing that came up was that business with
the rotating languages, where you have to pick the one you want
to use. I guess I was expecting some notification about turning
on voiceover with triple click home. There wasn't one of those,
at least if there was, my husband didn't see it. So I didn't
actually click triple click home. Everything turned out OK in
the end.

Hi all,
I recently got my new iPhone 7 Plus. I decided to start out
from scratch, hoping that maybe some of the problems I have been
having would go away. So I didn't just plug it into my Mac and
go right away from my encrypted backup. I started from scratch.
And there was nothing at all telling me about voiceover or
letting me turn it on or anything. If my sighted husband had not
been there, I would have been out of luck. It's been a while
since I've tried setting up a device from scratch. But I thought
Apple had a way that would let you turn voiceover on right at the
beginning of the process. This was missing. What didn't I do
that I should've done? It turned out I went ahead and ended up
doing my encrypted backup restoration, since the set up from
scratch didn't fix any of the problems I had been having and
still have. But I was really surprised that there wasn't
anything enabling me to start voice over from the get-go.

Hi,
Go into settings, General, Accessibility, and just after Call Routing, you will
find a setting for the Home button. Open that and set, rest finger on home
button to on. It defaults to off. This allows you to use your fingerprint to
open the phone. And, it will take one less press of the home button to open the
device without a passcode.

Mary, in the past, at that point, where the language choice comes up, even

had set up several phones that way without any sighted help at all.

For column navigation, I turn on vertical navigation on the rotor. This will
allow you to just flick up or down to move by row within a column.
So while I am using the excel app, I always just turn my rotor to vertical
navigation, then I can swipe left and right to move along a row, or flick up or
down to move along a column.

Now to add vertical navigation to the rotor, just go to Settings / General /
Accessibility / Voice Over, swipe down to rotor, and then choose vertical
navigation in the list.
  I hope this helps.

Re: Setting up an iPhone without iTunes and without sided help

2016-10-03 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks for your offer. I got the phone set up just fine. It's interesting that
my husband, who is cited, didn't see anything about skipping anything about
VoiceOver turning it on etc. He did some initial set up. Then I turned on
voiceover, once the screen was up after the initial set up. Then it I ended up
going back and just using my encrypted backup, since it was going to be a fair
amount of work to set up the apps like I had them before, and my attempt to get
rid of some problems I was having was not successful. So I just use mine crept
back up, and everything is OK.

Hi Everyone,

After I installed IOS 10 on my iPad and on my wife's IPhone when you press
the home button the screen that opens has the time, date and then you have
to double tap on the home button on the screen then it opens to the icon
screen. On my iPhone when I use the finger print reader and push the home
button my iPhone you to open right up to the icon screen. Now it opens up to
a screen that has the time, date and the home button on it. How do I get my
devices to open to the icon screen again like they did in IOS 9?

Re: Setting up an iPhone without iTunes and without sided help

2016-10-03 Thread Richard Turner

I have not set up an iPhone since the 6, but triple clicking home turned on
VoiceOver right after the phone powered up.
Now, if it has iOS 10 installed by default, that could be the problem. iOS 10
seems to be defaulting with the triple click home on "Ask," because the new
magnifier is on. Was iOS 10 already installed?
And since you have not been able to turn on Siri, you couldn't have used Siri
to turn it on.
That will be frustrating.

Greetings listers
Using iOs9.3.5 on an IPhone 4S using its Braille virtual keyboard, what's the
Braille signs for the Hashtag as in what Twitter"uses for its Trendy Topics,
and the percentage sign? I've tried every combination proceeded with Dot4 but
no go for Brailling these two signs! The only one I discovered works with Dot4,
is Dot4+d for the dollar sign, as in $65. Thanks for info.

Setting up an iPhone without iTunes and without sided help

2016-10-03 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
I recently got my new iPhone 7 Plus. I decided to start out from scratch,
hoping that maybe some of the problems I have been having would go away. So I
didn't just plug it into my Mac and go right away from my encrypted backup. I
started from scratch. And there was nothing at all telling me about voiceover
or letting me turn it on or anything. If my sighted husband had not been there,
I would have been out of luck. It's been a while since I've tried setting up a
device from scratch. But I thought Apple had a way that would let you turn
voiceover on right at the beginning of the process. This was missing. What
didn't I do that I should've done? It turned out I went ahead and ended up
doing my encrypted backup restoration, since the set up from scratch didn't fix
any of the problems I had been having and still have. But I was really
surprised that there wasn't anything enabling me to start voice over from the
get-go.

Annoying Buffering Behavior Gone in IOS 10

2016-10-03 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
When I read Carol's recent post about Voiceover reading text that seemed to be
trapped in the buffer, it reminded me of a somewhat similar situation I was
having. After I apparently had used the wrong gesture to label a folder called
"Cooking", Voiceover would say "Cooking" every time I changed screens, moved to
the first app on a screen, moved from the main screen into the doc, etc. This
behavior had then replicated itself to my other devices.

Apple accessibility was not able to find a solution, so I heard a lot of
"Cooking".

I am very happy to say that when I updated to IOS 10, as with Carol, this
annoying behavior is gone.

So if anyone else is having some kind of strange buffering behavior, it may be
worth upgrading. It definitely was for me.

Pam

RE: Moving app from one folder to another?

2016-10-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can also perform the scrub gesture to close a folder after you tagged an
app to be moved. The other way is perfectly fine, but the scrub gesture is
faster and it's just another quicker way to accomplish the same thing.

Re: IOS 10 update Samantha sounds fuzzy

2016-10-03 Thread 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone

Hi there,

I had something very similar! Yes, I certainly had problems with the
voices when I downloaded all the best speaking voices, only to find
that they sounded absolutely awful after the upgrade and I just couldn't
bear to listen to them like that! I couldn't crank up the volume much
above 50 percent as reading became too tedious and annoying. I Actually
complained to The Accessability Team but then, seeing a message from
Rajmund, I decided to give his advice a shot. Three or four times I
ended up flashing my phone to clear out any rubbish stuck in the system,
and finally I managed to get a result! :-) Now, my voices sound clear
and I am happy once again!

I know that I tried twice to do the reset where you hold down the Home
and lock screen key for 10 seconds, I then tried all sorts and must say
that some things were not terribly authentic! :-) However, I did get it
working but couldn't tell you quite everything I did because I can't
remember properly! No doubt, some who know better than I, can tell you
exactly how to do the resets properly! :-)

I do hope that gets you there. Please let me know as I am interested to
see how this one goes.

(The rest of this message may be interesting to some but is a little
long so feel free to skip if you're not interested once you start
reading on.)

Whilst writing, some may remember that I mentioned a bug in my phone
after I had been inputting in Braille, when it had some text trapped
somewhere in its buffer... At the time, various people suggested a few
things to me but I don't think they'd really grasped the problem. It had
occurred when I'd written a message to a friend in Braille with the
Smart Beetle. This was before the upgrade, when Braille wasn't behaving
very well and I was just learning the Beetle. I got frustrated and
deleted the message! From that time onwards, over a number of weeks,
Each time I dictated to Siri and he got it a little bit screwed up and I
corrected with the backspace key to delete to remove those characters
the phone would read out about three sentences of the message I had
attempted to write to a friend and had deleted it those weeks back. I
could still delete characters but couldn't stop this piece of texst from
reading each time.I even selected it and played it again, using the four
times three-finger tap, and there it was again! I also did various
resets at that point without success. I knew, the only thing to do was
to wait till the upgrade and, as the system was renewed and changed, it
would probably go away. Well, it did! HURRAY!

Gremlins, for sure!

RE: Locked screen

2016-10-03 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Ah, thanks, that is why I couldn't get it to work.

Is there a way to lower the volume of the sound affects without lowering any
other volumes? I find them somewhat intrusive.

Thanks.
Pam

RE: Locked screen

2016-10-03 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
I am trying to figure out how to just have the sound played when locking the
screen, so it won't say "Screen Locked". I believe I saw what to change in
settings on this list, but I am not finding it.

Can anyone refresh my memory?

wake button when the screen is locked it will make a funny noise.

I've had this in process issue at various times across several different
versions of iOS. I believe it is a hiccup with either the Apps Store or the
Apple servers which just happens from time to time as opposed to a specific
bug.

Hi!
This happens the first time you go into the edit mode for the

Just add one widget, no matter which one and confirm it. Go back
in edit mode and there'll be named list of widgets to add.

When you double tap on edit,
the add widget screen comes up.  At the top left will be a
cancel button, then as you swipe right, you will have a done
button, then you should hear, add widgets.
If you swipe right one more
  time, next you should hear:
Get timely information from
your favorite apps, at a glance. Add and organize your widgets
  below.

Now you will have a list of the
widgets you currently have on your today screen.  For each
one, you should hear the name of the widget, then a reorder
button for that widget.  The reorder button is used to help
you put your widgets in the order you want.
After you get done the list of
widgets on your today screen, then you will have a list of
widgets that you can add.  Before the name of each widget in
this list will be an insert button.  You would use this button
to add it to your today screen.

I hope this has been helpful.

This may or may not be a

my hardware keyboard set to nothing, as far as typing
feedback, so I tried selecting words, just to see if
that made a difference, and it didn't, so is there, or
is there not, a way to do this? I'd like it to make the
clicking sound as I type, so that I know that my text is
being entered, without having to set the typing feedback
to echo words. Now, when I use braille screen input, the
clicks are there, but not when I use hardware keyboards.
Thanks all.

Re: new wigits screen... page one of home screen

2016-10-03 Thread Chris Chaffin

I am not sure you were on the right screen. Did you double tap on edit?

When you double tap on edit, the add widget screen comes up. At the top left
will be a cancel button, then as you swipe right, you will have a done button,
then you should hear, add widgets.
If you swipe right one more time, next you should hear:
Get timely information from your favorite apps, at a glance. Add and organize
your widgets below.

Now you will have a list of the widgets you currently have on your today
screen. For each one, you should hear the name of the widget, then a reorder
button for that widget. The reorder button is used to help you put your
widgets in the order you want.
After you get done the list of widgets on your today screen, then you will have
a list of widgets that you can add. Before the name of each widget in this
list will be an insert button. You would use this button to add it to your
today screen.

I hope this has been helpful.

Chris, I just tried the widget screen by touching edit. Yes, as I flick down to
the right I have the widgets on my first screen. However, when I get to the new
widgets all I find is new-link and one more swipe puts me on move new. No names
are given. Could this mean I do not have any widgets to download? M

RE: Question about keyboard click sounds

2016-10-03 Thread Richard Turner
Those sounds only seem to be related to onscreen input.
The typing feedback is so you hear the letters or words as you type them.
There does not seem to be a way to get keyboard clicks with external keyboards.
If you set hardware keyboard to characters, you will hear each character
entered, which I could understand might not be a good idea if you want to keep
your typing private.

Subject: Question about keyboard click sounds

Hey list,
This may or may not be a strange question. Is there a way to get the keyboard
clicks to sound when typing with a third party keyboard, like a braille display
or a bluetooth keyboard? I have my hardware keyboard set to nothing, as far as
typing feedback, so I tried selecting words, just to see if that made a
difference, and it didn't, so is there, or is there not, a way to do this? I'd
like it to make the clicking sound as I type, so that I know that my text is
being entered, without having to set the typing feedback to echo words. Now,
when I use braille screen input, the clicks are there, but not when I use
hardware keyboards. Thanks all.

Re: App Store Issues

Another way around this issue is after the app store fails to go in to the app
switcher force quit the app store than reopen go back to search and type in
what you are looking for and it seems to work very strange.

RE: Locked screen

If you touch the screen and nothing speaks, it is locked.
It does make a soft sound if sounds are enabled.
Also, if you hit the home button, you will find out if it is locked.

Re: new wigits screen... page one of home screen

2016-10-03 Thread Chris Chaffin

If you go to your Today Screen or Widget Screen, and swipe to the bottom of the
screen, you will find and edit button.
Double tap on the edit button. The screen you are now on will first list all
of the widgets that you currently have on your Today Screen, then you will find
a list of widgets that are available that are not on your today screen but you
can add them if you like.
Together, this will be all of the widgets that you have on your device. If it
is not in either list, then that app does not currently have one.

Hope this helps,

Chris

I've had this in process issue at various times across several different
versions of iOS. I believe it is a hiccup with either the Apps Store or the
Apple servers which just happens from time to time as opposed to a specific
