We own the blood pressure cuff and like it a lot. the scale is on my wish list
for now!

If anyone is considering getting one of these, they are really user friendly,
easy to pair with your i phone, and very accessable through the cardio app.

Re: Direct tv Now

2016-11-14 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hi Kliphton, and list,

Kliphton, thank you for this article. I really appreciate it. I really hope
this service is launched this week. I also hope that they do offer a 7 day
trial.

I really want to see how accessible this App might be. I'm hoping that it will
be much more accessible than Sling.

I'm excited about this, and I love the price. Although, if it were $50, I still
would be willing to pay that.

I will watch for articles and information as well. But if you hear of anything
else, please let me know.

Thank you,

Terri

http://www.businessinsider.com/directv-now-apple-tv-and-fire-stick-giveaway-2016-11

Article is belo.

AT plans to give away free Apple TVs and Amazon Fire TV Sticks with its
coming $35-a-month streaming TV service, DirecTV Now, according to leaked
documents viewed by
Variety.

AT made waves in the industry last month when it announced that DirecTV Now
would provide more than 100 channels for a mere $35 a month, undercutting many
rivals on price. (Wall Street was expecting it to cost about $50 a month,
according to analysts at Macquarie.)

AT says it will be able to make the economics work at that price in part by
cutting out legacy equipment like satellite dishes. DirecTV Now will be
delivered over the internet, eliminating the need for cable or satellite but,
to watch it on a TV, requiring a streaming box (like an Apple TV) or a smart TV.

Not everyone, however, has a streaming box ready to go. With this leak, it
seems as if AT will try to bridge the "streaming gap" for customers by simply
giving them a free streaming box.

And make no mistake: This is a monster giveaway.

Variety says people who sign up for three months of DirecTV Now will get a free
Apple TV. DirecTV Now is only $35 a month, which means AT is asking for just
a $105 commitment. An Apple TV alone costs $150 at retail. And if you don't
want to commit to three months of DirecTV Now, you can sign up for one month
($35) and get a free Amazon Fire TV Stick. That would cost you about $40 at
retail.

The fuzzy details

We still don't know exactly which channels will be on DirecTV Now. AT has
already signed deals with HBO, Discovery, NBCUniversal, Turner, Viacom, Disney,
AMC, Scripps, Starz, and more. So it seems as if all the big guns will be
signed up for launch. But exactly which channels they are providing is still up
in the air. (An ad for the service viewed by Business Insider showed that ESPN
would be on it).

DirecTV Now will have a "72-hour catch-up window," according to Variety, which
will let you watch shows on-demand for three days after they air. But there may
be limitations on this feature — ESPN isn't on that catch-up list, for
instance. DirecTV Now will also have an on-demand library of "up to 14,000
titles," according to Variety.

For those who don't want to start paying before testing it out, DirecTV Now
will let you have a seven-day free trial, according to an ad viewed by Business
Insider that has since been taken down.

The future is streaming

AT has big plans for DirecTV Now and thinks it will be the company's primary
TV platform by
2020,
 according to Bloomberg.

In the immediate time period, a recent
report
from MoffettNathanson estimated that DirecTV Now could snag 11 million
subscribers. On Nov 14, 2016, at 2:30 PM, Kliphton Miller

committing to 3 months is true. Go to
cord cutters.com
and read the article there. I also sent in a article this morning that says
the service should launch this week.

Hello everyone,

As I mentioned yesterday, I tried talking to someone at Direct tv, about
this new service. She didn't seem to know really anything, but that the
service might exist.

So this morning I thought about calling my local AT store. I got a
little more help from a guy there.

He wasn't sure when the service was coming out. He thought it would be
the middle of this month, or some time next month. He said that I should
receive emails about it, and even fliers in the mail.

I asked him if he heard about the deal where if you purchased 3 months
of service you would receive a 4th generation Apple tv. But he hadn't
heard of this. Doesn't surprise me, that sounds a little too good to be
true. Although, I could be wrong.

He says it's open to everyone, and you don't have to qualify for it. He
says it's like signing up for Netflix. Well, this is good to know.

So now we hope, and wait!

I am not sure if overtime they disappear if you don't do this next, but after
doing what Sigard says, I then go on the bottom tabs to albums, double tap
that, look for what's called "recently deleted", double tap that, double tap
the button that says select, after which there are choices, "delete all",
"recover all". Double tap on delete all.

Open the Photos app, make sure the "Photos" tab at the bottom left is
selected, then double tap on the "Select" button at the top right.
You can now double tap on the Photos you want to delete to select them, then
double tap on Delete at the bottom.

Sorry, should have added that if you have a group of pictures which were taken
at a particular location and a particular time then there is a "Select" option
underneath the heading for this group and you can select this instead of all
the individual pictures.

Open the Photos app, make sure the "Photos" tab at the bottom left is selected,
then double tap on the "Select" button at the top right.
You can now double tap on the Photos you want to delete to select them, then
double tap on Delete at the bottom.

RE: Vehicle locator GPS app

2016-11-14 Thread Chip Orange
Sorry, I forgot a really important offering: the Near-by Explorer from APH. It
uses both a commercial high quality map along with Google places, but it
doesn’t charge a yearly subscription like Sendero. It’s just a single sale of
$79.

I don’t own it, but it looks to me to be exactly what you would want as a good
compromise between high quality data and cost. APH.org runs a mailing list for
Near-by Explorer if you want to ask questions of current owners.

Hi Todd,

Blind Square only uses street map data from a free data source called “Open
Street Map”, and it’s quite inaccurate. In my location, it has street names
wrong, and locations of intersections off by hundreds of yards (or meters).

Sendero uses a commercial map supplier, and it’s data is quite accurate, but of
course much more expensive.

I’ve written to the author of Blind Square to ask if he could add a feature to
allow users to report mapping errors, report corrections to street names and
locations, etc., and he said no, it’s not ever going to be in his plans. He
only downloads new maps once a year to begin with, so he doesn’t think offering
corrections would even be helpful to such infrequent updates.

There is a third mapping choice called Arriadne GPS, which is even less
expensive than Blind Square, but which uses Google Mapping data which I believe
is constantly updated and is more accurate for street map locations (but may
not be as accurate for business locations).

Hth,

Chip

Trying this again, I have to agree with Sieghard, in that my problem with wifi
assist is that it is on by default. A lot of people are going to be using data
and not knowing why. I checked, and apparently it had gotten turned on again
during some upgrade. It is off now, that network connection in progress icon

I have to disagree with Sieghard about turning off wifi assist (unless you
simply never leave home). I've been away from home in locations which were
supposed to provide free wifi, but what I've found is that their wifi was so
excessively slow, or the signal was so excessively poor, that I could not use
the internet at all without having wifi assist enabled to switch over to use of
cellular data.

I suppose I could keep trying and failing with the wifi, until I figured out it
wasn't going to work, then tell it to go "forget this network", so it would
then use my cellular data, but on my next visit it could work ok, but since I
had to "forget" the network in order to use cell data, I'd never know without
going through all that again.

I guess I am never this close to using every last byte of my cell data plan, so
I don't have to worry about it, and I simply want my phone to work and work
quickly (especially since I use siri to execute a lot of my commands, and it
needs internet access to even parse and execute my commands).

Hi Arnold,

Maybe check in Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. This
is at the end of location services and I would turn off most of what is in
there except of course Find my iPhone and so on. But there are things like
traffic, frequent places, cell network search, Wi-fi Network search, automatic
time zone and all of that which you can turn off, maybe that makes a difference
as far as the message in the status bar that your Wi-Fi connection is active.
Also make sure you go to Settings > Cellular and again almost at the bottom
above Reset make sure WiFi Assist is turned off. This is more to protect
yourself from using excessive cellular data since this setting means that if it
is on your cellular data/connection is used to make up for situations when your
WiFi signal is poor. I just realized when I checked it that it is on on my
phone, I received a warranty replacement a couple of weeks ago and this setting
is on by default and I hadn't turned it off yet. However, looking at the amount
of data used, 3.8 Mb, it is very minor as this was over a two-week period.
Lastly, make sure you don't, for some reason, have Personal Hotspot on.

Sieghard

It makes perfect sense when this is in my status bar when I am doing something
for it to be there. But sometimes, it is there when I am not. Perhaps it is
left over from when I was doing something, but I assume the connection is still
live. Even when I close everything in the app switcher, it is still there. The

Chip and all, I started a new thread since changing the subject still shows up
in the thread of the original.

Chip, depending on how many cells you want, I'm personally holding out to see
what the Orbit 20 from APH is like when it is released, hopefully within a
couple months.

The target was to sell it for $500 or so.

It is 20 cells, bluetooth and USB, and has the input keys, but no voice of its
own and none of the other features of a full note taker. Though it will have an
SD card so you could load books on it.

>From there, you jump up to over $1000 to the Smart Beatle from HIMS which I
>think is a 16 cell display.

Freedom Scientific makes a 14 or 40 cell display, but frankly, I don't think
they are particularly well made.

HIMS makes the 40 cell Braille Edge, which has some basic note taker functions,
but no voice and is really designed as a display and input device, but it is
almost $3000.

HIMS also makes the Smart Beatle I think still, but it is only 16 cells I
believe.

Then there are the Vario Ultra displays from Baum USA. The smaller one is 20
cells at around $2400 and the 40 cell around $3300 I think.

Perkins also makes one but I don't know if it has bluetooth.

I use the Braille Edge for work and it is very nice.

But, if I am spending my own money, I'm going to give the Orbit 20 a good look
when it is released.

HTH,

Richard

the bluetooth implementation of one called the Brailliant, which otherwise
would be a good choice (but many people complain of bluetooth speed and
connection problems).

So, I’ve changed the subject on this in case I can get recommendations for a

Hth,

RE: Our biggest sale ever – Exclusive to our Qardio family!

2016-11-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
OK, so I guess I could have done this first, but I was curious and went to the
Qardio website to check out the mysterious third product I didn't know about.
The product is not yet released, but I assume you can preorder it and take
advantage of the substantial 40% discount. It is called the Qardio Core and it
is a wearable, continuous EKG/ECG monitor. I am not going to paste all the
information here, below is a link for those who are interested. It is listed at
$449 and I assume you get 40% off that price if you were to also order a Qardio
Arm blood pressure monitor for $99 less discount and the Qardio Base smart
scale for $149 less discount. The total for all 3 products is $697, if you get
40% off you can own all three for $418.20 (I assume that is US currency, but I
didn't look if because I am in Canada this took me to a canadian website). Not
a bad deal, but even if you just want the Qardio Arm or just the scale you can
get 30% off any one of these items, $69.30 for the Qardio Arm instead of $99 or
$104.30 for the scale instead of $149. Do your research, though, the scale I
believe does not get the same good ratings as the blood pressure monitor and
the Withings Smartscale for $199 (I think that's Canadian) gets much better
reviews and of course there might be deals coming up as well with Black Friday
getting closer. Here is the link now for the Qardio Core:

you buy 3 items. Not sure what else they make, I know about the blood pressure

braille display; was RE: Vehicle locator GPS app

2016-11-14 Thread Chip Orange
No Richard … I’ve never used a braille display, but recently I’ve thought about
looking into getting one.

I really only know I want just a display, and not one of the expensive
full-featured note takers, but I have no idea where to start looking for a
small inexpensive display. I’ve seen many comments that there’s a problem with
the bluetooth implementation of one called the Brailliant, which otherwise
would be a good choice (but many people complain of bluetooth speed and
connection problems).

So, I’ve changed the subject on this in case I can get recommendations for a
braille display.

The
only way I can cancel it is to reboot my phone. Any ideas why it is still
there, and how to cancel it without having to reboot my phone?

RE: Question Regarding Restoring a Phone

2016-11-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If you use iTunes you can restore in one of two different ways: you can go to
File > Devices > Restore and restore from a backup or you can go to your device
area and tab to the Restore button. This second method will actually redownload
the iOS software even if you have the latest version installed and then
reinstall it. At the end you are asked if you want to set up as a new phone or
restore either an iTunes or iCloud backup.
If you use Settings > General > Reset from the phone and choose to Erase all
content and restore settings that is exactly what happens, all content is
deleted which includes any apps you may have downloaded and all settings are
restored to their factory defaults (WiFi networks go away, any bluetooth
devices you paired go away etcv.). At the end when the phone reboots you will
be at the "Slide to Set Up" screen where you can start from scratch, you now
also have the opportunity to restore an iCloud backup or set up as a new phone.
iOS, however, will not be redownloaded and reinstalled.

Sieghard

Hello, all. Recently I read some posts about battery drain and some people
recommended restoring the phone to factory settings then downloading your apps
again. So now my curiosity is up.

What is the difference between restoring to factory settings and erasing all
content and settings, signing into iCloud, and downloading your apps. There may
not be a difference, but I am very curious. I just did the latter because my
new iPhone 7 was running slower than expected when I restored my phone from

Thanks for your thoughts.

as far as the message in the status bar that your Wi-Fi connection is active.

The
only way I can cancel it is to reboot my phone. Any ideas why it is still
there, and how to cancel it without having to reboot my phone?

RE: Vehicle locator GPS app

2016-11-14 Thread Chip Orange

Hth,

Chip

I am aware of the device used to track all routes that records all the routes

Maps app is OK but need a more of an app that will tell me where I am while the

Know anything like this?

RE: Network Connection In Progress

2016-11-14 Thread Chip Orange

Question Regarding Restoring a Phone

2016-11-14 Thread Keith Bundy

I just did the latter because my
new iPhone 7 was running slower than expected when I restored my phone from
iCloud.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Direct tv Now

2016-11-14 Thread Kliphton Miller
Here is the link to read article
http://www.businessinsider.com/directv-now-apple-tv-and-fire-stick-giveaway-2016-11

Article is belo.
AT plans to give away free Apple TVs and Amazon Fire TV Sticks with its
coming $35-a-month streaming TV service, DirecTV Now, according to leaked
documents viewed by Variety
.

DirecTV Now will be
delivered over the internet, eliminating the need for cable or satellite but,
to watch it on a TV, requiring a streaming box (like an Apple TV) or a smart
TV.
TV platform by 2020
,
 according to Bloomberg.
In the immediate time period, a recent report

from MoffettNathanson estimated that DirecTV Now could snag 11 million
subscribers. On Nov 14, 2016, at 2:30 PM, Kliphton Miller

Re: The Updated Gmail iOS App and VoiceOver

2016-11-14 Thread regina alvarado

Hello all: I was thinking of using the gmail app, but I like the native app
with IOS. The only thing that drives me crazy is that when you tap the
conversation to get to the messages the only time they go to the original email
is the first time. After that if you continue after deleting to go through the
mail it starts on the last email written. I found if I expand conversations on
the front screen it will be only a preview and not the whole email. Is there a
setting or something someone can suggest for either problem that would enhance
my reading email? Thanks so much in advance.

Yes, it just happened to me in Safari when trying to fill out a form on a web

Hello everybody. Recently I've noticed that VoiceOver doesn't always speak
characters, words or lines when I navigate with the one finger flick up and
down gestures. I noticed this behavior in Microsoft Word. The behavior seems to
be intermittent. Have any of you experienced this?

RE: Improving typing on the i phone

I agree with Michael on the best way to use built-in phone keyboard, and on the
idea that a bluetooth keyboard is the next step up if you can carry it around
with you.

I use the touch typing mode. That helped my speed a lot as you only enter
characters when you lift your finger off the screen after getting the right
letter. You eventually develop a kind of muscle memory and land on the right
letter without having to slide your finger around for it. I still like the
feedback of hearing the letter I type. There's also a direct touch typing mode
where touching the letter will enter it without any feedback. I don't find that
method practical for me.

For more lengthy writing, I have a portable Bluetooth keyboard. There are lots
of these. I prefer the Microsoft Universal Mobile keyboard. It's rigid enough
to use on your lap and 85% the size of a full keyboard. It's protected by a
sturdy cover which closes over the keyboard like a book. That cover can also
turn on the keyboard when it opens, is magnetically attached and can serve as a
tray for an iPHONE or stand for a tablet.

Direct tv Now

2016-11-14 Thread Terri Stimmel

Hello Terri,

Yes, there is a marvelously VoiceOver accessible app which you may use.

I will paste in the text of my original post on this app, below my
signature.

This is one of my favorite apps. I use it weekly. The developers are
very careful not to break VoiceOver accessibility and for that, I always
thank them.

Good luck on your search,

Subject: Accessible Apps for buying, saling, or even looking for housing?

Hello everyone,

I usually use Craigslist on my laptop, if I want to sale something
locally, or if I want to purchase something. I have even found apartments
this way.

I guess it's been a week since I last went to the site. I went there about
an hour ago, as I would like to find another apartment.

However, the site was strange, and didn't make sense. When I went to view
apartments, I saw all these numbers, instead of links that said 1 bedroom
apartment, and so on. I tried to enter on one of the links. But from what
I could tell, nothing happened. So I am not sure what is going on.

I tell you all this long story for a reason.

Is there an app for Craigslist, that works with the Iphone, or Ipad?

How accessible might it be?

Also, if there isn't an App for Craigslist, are there other accessible
Apps that offer apartment, or roommate listings, as well as other things.
Such as computer stuff, and the like?

I have a sighted friend who uses offer-up, though I know this doesn't have
a housing section.

I tried this on my Iphone a couple of months ago, and unfortunately it
didn't seem accessible at all.

I mainly want a site that will offer a range of housing options, but
more with private landlords. I don't like big management companies.
That's a personal choice.

If anyone has any ideas for me, I would really appreciate hearing from
you.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Improving typing on the i phone

2016-11-14 Thread Devin Prater
If you like Fleksy, turn the typing mode to Direct Touch Typing, and enable
auto-corrent and spell checking. that'll probably give the the fastest
typing speed available, but a lot more mistakes you'd have to sort out.
With braille screen input, you get more accurate typing, but with less
features, such as the absence of predictions, autocorrections, and
dictation, which you'd have to use the main keyboard for.

Sometimes VoiceOver doesn't speak when navigating in edit fields

Hello everybody. Recently I've noticed that VoiceOver doesn't always speak
characters, words or lines when I navigate with the one finger flick up and
down gestures. I noticed this behavior in Microsoft Word. The behavior seems to
be intermittent. Have any of you experienced this?

RE: Sprinkler Controller App

2016-11-14 Thread Tom Rash
I use a controller and app called Sky Drop. The water company in our city were
giving these out for free for a limited time. It does work with the iPhone.
Since we didn't have to pay for it, I'm not sure of the cost, but I don't think
it was much more than $100.00

Hi All,

Does anyone know of any sprinkler system controllers that have an accessible
app for scheduling the day and time the sprinkler runs, and for how long?

Thanks.

Re: Improving typing on the i phone

 If it's not on the rotor, go to Settings/General/Accessibility/Rotor;
there check an option "Braille Screen Input" which will place this item
on the rotor. From there, go to the rotor, and Braille away! That's the
typing method I use generally on my iPhone 5S.

Hello,
1) Settings, general, accessibility, voiceover, rotor. 2) Scroll down till you
find braille screen input, and double tap. This will add it to the rotor. If it
says selected already, then don't double tap, it's added, already.
1) Go back to the voiceover menu, and open braille. Here, choose your prefered
braille typing grades, and codes. 4) Open an app, where is text fields, twist
∫the rotor to braille screen input, and have a go on it. To calibrate the dots,
press 4-5-6, and instantly, 1-2-3. This should say dot positions calibrated. No
delete a character, flick left. Delete word, flick 2 fingers to the left. New
line, flick 2 fingers to the right. Space, flick right. Lock braille
orientation, 3 fingers up. HTH.

Re: Improving typing on the i phone

2016-11-14 Thread Michael Feir
I use the touch typing mode. That helped my speed a lot as you only enter
characters when you lift your finger off the screen after getting the right
letter. You eventually develop a kind of muscle memory and land on the
right letter without having to slide your finger around for it. I still
like the feedback of hearing the letter I type. There's also a direct touch
typing mode where touching the letter will enter it without any feedback. I
don't find that method practical for me.

For more lengthy writing, I have a portable Bluetooth keyboard. There are
lots of these. I prefer the Microsoft Universal Mobile keyboard. It's rigid
enough to use on your lap and 85% the size of a full keyboard. It's
protected by a sturdy cover which closes over the keyboard like a book.
That cover can also turn on the keyboard when it opens, is magnetically
attached and can serve as a tray for an iPHONE or stand for a tablet.

To all that tried to help me with this problem, thank you very much.
I found and corrected the problem!
On my wife's phone, she had my phone number in her own contact info for some
reason,
and since alphabetically her name comes before mine in her contact list,
her phone was recognizing my number associated with her name.
Once she removed my number from her info, the only place for the phone to
find that number was with my name.
Problem solved!
Based on these results, I would say that the phone identifies the incoming
number, then performs an alphabetical search of the contacts list
and places the associated name with the number.
At any rate, thanks to everyone that responded to my original post!
Take care,
