RE: problem with Alexa app and VO; was what's the email to report an accessibility problem to Apple?

2016-12-12 Thread Jim Ruby
The amazon alexa app nees some work, there are big time focus problems with
voice over. I bet they are not testing it with voice over on using the voice
over gestures etc.

accessibility problem to Apple?

Hi Sieghard,

Good point, so I’ll mention it here: I and my wife and constantly making use
of the Amazon Echo feature which lets you create shopping lists. My problem
with VO is that when I use the Alexa app on the Iphone, and try to take items
off of the list once purchased (by tapping the checkbox next to the item), most
of the time the checkbox remains unchecked. Rarely it will changed to
“checked” status, but it’s completely random.

I’ve written to Amazon a couple of times, and called them on the phone once,
and they’ve told me their testing hasn’t turned up any issues with the app; so,
I’ll write Apple to see if it’s a VO problem instead of an Alexa app problem.

Anyone have any ideas? Can anyone else duplicate this?

Thanks,

Chip

Hi Chip,

What problem are you planning to report? I find it’s often a good idea to also
post it to the list and in fact I sometimes post something to the list and CC
Apple Accessibility on it or vice versa since sometimes what I think might be a
bug is something others don’t experience, have a fix for or in some cases Apple
may have changed how something is supposed to work and it may appear as a bug
when it is not. I am not saying this is the case with your issue, but if you
let the list know then others can try to reproduce it as well and add their
voice to yours in reporting it.

Hello,

For what it's worth, this is how I usually use the Alexa App on my iPhone 6S
Plus iOS 10.1.1.

This is how I activate links or check boxes.

I double Tap, I hold the tap for a second or so and it usually works. But if I
tap quickly and release my finger, usually things won't work. I have also
spoken to Amazon and filled out the feedback form, but??

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Subject: Philips Hue Lights - first impressions

Hi,

Thought I post a few thoughts about the Philips Hue lights I recently
purchased. To start out with I can say that both my wife and I are very
impressed and happy with how this system works. I am the sort of guy who likes
to read as few instructions as possible when it comes to setting up these type
of gadgets. When I received the stuff I put in all the light bulbs and then
connected the bridge and downloaded the app. As soon as I opened it I was
guided through the setup quite nicely, but hit a bit of a snag when I was told
that in order to set up Home Kit integration I had to either scan an 8-digit
“Home Kit Code” or enter it manually. The app said the code was in the
packaging or on the accessory. I asked my wife to look and she did see it on
the bottom of the bridge and also I think in the little booklet that came in
the box, but for some reason it wouldn’t scan and since it’s only 8 digits I
just quickly entered it manually.

What I thought wasn’t explained too well was how to set up the individual
lights and rooms, it’s fairly intuitive, but the app said to make sure all
lights were turned on which means to make sure the actual wall switch was on so
they have power because of course if a light is turned off at the wall switch
it is not available to be controlled and the idea is to leave the wall switches
on and to turn on the lights either by telling SIRI to turn them off or you can
very easily use the Home app to do this and once Home integration is set up
there actually is a third page when you pull up the control centre which can
show up to 9 accessories and you can turn lights on or off simply by tapping on
the light you want to control and it turns on or off, if you swipe down or up
(rotor action) you get a “Show More Controls” and this opens up a screen where
you have a slider where you can flick up and down and control the brightness,
from 100% all the way down to I think 2%.

Anyhow, back to the setup. When I turned on all the lights they all showed up
with the name of the bulb model, e.g. Philips Hue White” or “Philips Hue
Ambient White” etc. The problem was that I have 6 of the ambient white and 3 of
the just white and I had no way to figure out which light was where. I then
decided to turn off all lights with their wall switch and only leave on, for
example, the hallway light where I happen to have just one of the 3 white
bulbs. Once Idid this all lights shows as offline except for this one and I
then went ahead and renamed it “Hallway”. Then I turned on the light at my
front door/entry way. Here are two white bulbs and I didn’t really care which
one was which and I just called them Front Door 1 and Front Door 2. Then I did
the Kitchen where I have a lamp over the dining table, a 3-bulb fixture in the
middle and a 2-bulb fixture over the sink area. I only had enough bulbs to put
in one over the sink and 2 in the middle and by using the same method as before
I named them Dining table, Kitchen 1 and Kitchen 2 and Kitchen Sink 1. Lastly I
did the bedroom where I have 1 bulb in the ceiling fixture and 1 in my wife’s
bedsight lamp, I called them Bedroom Ceiling and Jackie’s Lamp.

Once that was done I was easily able to group, for example Front Door 1 and
Front Door 2 into a room I called “Front Door”, similarly I grouped Kitchen 1
and Kitchen 2 together as “Kitchen”.

Interestingly enough I looked all over the place in the Philips Hue app and
could not really find any place where you can turn the lights on or off. I
think the app is primarily for setup, you can setup your rooms, SIRI voice
control, create scenes (or pick from existing ones) and so on. I haven’t played
around with the scenes a lot yet, but they are things like “Bright”, “Read”,
“Nightlight”, “Energize” etc. If you have ambient white bulbs you get things
like “Tropical Twilight”, “Savanna Sunset” etc. and if you have the colour
bulbs you can do even more as they can do 16 million colours.

I then tried to set up my wife’s iPhone to work with SIRI and then realized
that once I connected the Hue bridge to her phone that it disconnected it from
mine, e.g. SIRI voice control was only working either on my phone or on hers. I
then decided to do a bit of reading and learned that I had to make sure it was
working on mine and then I can invite/share people to use it. Th

Re: Braille to speech apps?

2016-12-12 Thread Cathy Inglis
When I bought the app, it did say that it would work with bard books. That's
all I know. That's the reason why I got the app. Now, I can't get any help, and
I paid $14.95 Plus tax, for this app, and now it doesn't work. And Apple won't
give me back the money, and I understand, I've had over 30 days, but I can't
get any response from the creator. It says it still and other app stores, just
not in the US App Store.
I'm on a fixed income, so I was excited to be able to have this app. I bought
this app in the summer, so it's not that old. Oh well, I guess I'll just have
to forget about it. If someone can help me, that would be great. Sorry that I
rented.

Re: Problem

2016-12-12 Thread rajmund

Hello Wane,
Fair enough that I'm on the beta, but for example, when typing an
email address, somewhere like appleID.apple.com, if I explore too
much, or touch too far up the screen, the field loses focus.
It's not an issue on my iPad, that's also fair enough, but that,
because of the email issue, I left on IOS9.3.5. It could be a
bug, I'm not sure, but that's how it appears for me. If you
would like me to reproduce it, somehow, I'd be happy to do so.

inconsistent that I'm thinking it might have to do with the actual webpage or

Re: Problem

2016-12-12 Thread Wayne Merritt
The site where it happened this weekend was a site that probably has
it's own accessibility issues:
www.megabus.com
I was trying to fill out the date field, and after writing a few
numbers in the date, the field disappeared. This was one where when my
wife looked without VoiceOver, she had some issues herself. Though the
keyboard did not disappear for her, it was not obvious how to buy
tickets from that site. I will keep watching this behavior to get some
sort of pattern. I don't use Safari all the time, but I do use it
fairly often.

I am fairly sure that Winston Chen did not develop the Voice Braille Reader,
but you could write him directly at supp...@voicedream.com

Just to be clear, BARD braille books are not and never have been designed to
be read by anything but a braille display. In fact, when using a braille
display, you have to set it to uncontracted braille because if you try and use
contracted braille it is attempting to contract things that are already
contracted. To have a device read one of their brf files, it would have to be
set to read computer code out loud, since, for example, the symbol for "t h e"
is an exclamation mark, 'it would have to know that when it comes across an
exclamation mark to speak that as those letters instead of treating it as a
punctuation mark.

What about looking for the same title on Bookshare.

 Hey Thom,

 Regarding your questions.
I have added the traffic light positions manually.
It doesn't let you know if the light is green or not but it is in my plans
 to do it.
Next week i'm going to update the app so it can give vibrations to an
apple watch as well as play an audio message in case you use headsets.
I'm still working on navigation in order to make it as good as blindsquare
 but free of charge.

Sometimes dictation does not announce what it has inserted

2016-12-12 Thread Mary Otten
I wonder if anyone has noticed this problem. I first noticed it in voice dream
reader in the search box. I dictate the text of a title, and voiceover does not
announce what it inserted, although it did insert something, which I can tell
by looking in the edit box. It's very consistent about not announcing. I
thought it was a Voice Dream quirk, until I experienced it in another app this
morning. Also a search field. So I wonder if there something about search
field. It works fine in mail. Just curious if anyone else has seen this.

Re: New app for finding traffic lights

2016-12-12 Thread Richard Turner
If you are not in a city supported by the app, contact your department of
transportation and ask them to get in touch with the developer and send him the
traffic light data. The address they can use is
supp...@citylightsapp.com

If you are in a city that supports it, it is a stand alone app. You have to
have sounds vibrations turned on, then while the app is open, it will vibrate
when you are approaching an intersection with a traffic light.
I believe all that is explained in the app store description of the app.

Richard

Hey Thom,

Regarding your questions.
I have added the traffic light positions manually.
It doesn't let you know if the light is green or not but it is in my plans to
do it.
Next week i'm going to update the app so it can give vibrations to an apple
watch as well as play an audio message in case you use headsets.
I'm still working on navigation in order to make it as good as blindsquare but
free of charge.

Apple Releases iOS 10.2; Bringing Fixes, But Also Some New Bugs for VoiceOver and Focus Braille Display Users

2016-12-12 Thread Mary Otten
Apple Releases iOS 10.2; Bringing Fixes, But Also Some New Bugs for VoiceOver
and Focus Braille Display Users
AppleVis | Empowering blind and low-vision users of Apple products ... /
AppleVis

Apple has today released iOS 10.2 to the public.

For blind and low vision users, our limited testing suggests that Apple has
made continued progress towards addressing the accessibility bugs present in
iOS 10. However, despite this progress, our testing also suggests that a number
of accessibility bugs have been introduced in this release—one of which we
believe to be potentially critical for those who use the Focus line of braille
displays. Thus, if you have not already updated your device to iOS 10.2, we
strongly recommend that you read this post and any comments below before doing
so.

As we always stress in these posts, it is impossible for us to test all
devices, apps, and use cases. With this and the fact that the first version of
iOS 10 introduced a number of bugs which were not common to all users and use
cases, it is very likely that there are changes, regressions or improvements
that we are not aware of at the time of posting. With this in mind, we would
greatly appreciate your help in ensuring that the information on this page is
as complete and accurate as possible. If you spot any accessibility-related
changes in iOS 10.2, please do let us know in the comments.

Accessibility Bugs Introduced in iOS 10.2

Users of the Freedom Scientific Focus line of braille displays may experience
issues pairing their display with devices running iOS 10.2. The information we
have available to us suggests that this issue primarily affects users who
attempt to re-pair a Focus display which has previously been un-paired from the
same iOS device, although in our testing it was also impossible to pair a Focus
display for the first time when running iOS 10.2. It is our understanding that
Focus displays paired before updating to iOS 10.2 should continue to work
correctly. This issue was apparently discovered very late in the beta cycle,
and Apple has assured us that a fix is in the works and will be released in the
near future. In the meantime, we recommend that you do not upgrade to iOS 10.2
if you use a Focus braille display and have a use case which may require you to
un-pair and re-pair the display, or if you may need to pair a Focus display for
the first time before Apple releases a fix. At the time of posting, we believe
that the Focus line of displays are the only displays affected by this issue;
in addition to the Focus 14 Blue and Focus 40 Blue, the models we were able to
test under iOS 10.2 include the Braille Edge, Braille Sense, Refreshabraille,
VarioUltra, and Brailliant.
When opening a message in the Mail app, VoiceOver focus is no longer
automatically placed in the body of the message. To find the body of the
message, the user must either swipe or explore by touch. It is our
understanding that this change is not by design, and that we should expect to
see this revert back to the previous behavior in a future iOS release.
The VoiceOver rotor no longer consistently switches to the 'Actions' rotor item
when VoiceOver focus lands on an element which has actions available.
In certain situations, VoiceOver will randomly speak the contents of previous
notifications which do not appear onscreen visually. This issue does not occur
consistently, and the notifications are no longer spoken once speech is stopped
or focus is moved to another element.
Accessibility Bugs Fixed in iOS 10.2

It is once again possible to navigate by character when in a text field on a
web page.
Enhanced Quality voices no longer occasionally revert to their compact variants.
The Enhanced Quality Siri voices are once again available for use with
VoiceOver in all use cases.
It is now possible to manage shared access in the Home app using VoiceOver.
VoiceOver now correctly announces the status of the Love and Dislike buttons in
the Music app.
VoiceOver now correctly provides feedback on the current selection status when
editing the list of mailboxes / folders in the Mail app.
There is no longer a duplicated heading at the top of the 'For You' tab of the
native News app.
VoiceOver now behaves as expected when using 3D Touch and the scrub gesture
inside Home Screen folders.
VoiceOver rotor actions now work as expected in the 'Up Next' section of the
Music app.
VoiceOver now behaves as expected in the Weather app when you have multiple
locations set.
When new widgets are available while browsing the list of all widgets,
VoiceOver correctly reads their names.
It is once again possible to rearrange the order of favorites in the Phone app
when VoiceOver is enabled.
New Features and Changes

In regard to general changes and new features, here are some that you may wish
to explore in iOS 10.2:

The new TV app introduced by Apple in its most recent keynote is coming to iOS

One annoying bug I hope does get fixed is that when streaming from Tunein, if a
notification comes in, it incessantly speaks over and over, even if you try to
unlock the phone and get it off the screen. Shutting vo off and putting it back
on does work, but it takes several seconds after tripple clicking home to make
the madness stop.

going to the phone and then swiping away from the time elapsed

I'll have to make sure it's not on there when I lock it, although mine seems
to persist in speaking it even if I get the phone back to the home screen,
not sure if it's specific to the NFL on Tunein Premium, but it's where I

Apple has today released iOS 10.2 to the public.

For blind and low vision users, our limited testing suggests that Apple
has made continued progress towards addressing the accessibility bugs
present in iOS 10. However, despite this progress, our testing also
suggests
that a number of accessibility bugs have been introduced in this
release—one

of which we believe to be potentially critical for those who use the Focus
line of braille displays. Thus, if you have not already updated your
device
to iOS 10.2, we strongly recommend that you read this post and any
comments

below before doing so.

As we always stress in these posts, it is impossible for us to test all
devices, apps, and use cases. With this and the fact that the first
version
of iOS 10 introduced a number of bugs which were not common to all users
and

use cases, it is very likely that there are changes, regressions or
improvements that we are not aware of at the time of posting. With this in
mind, we would greatly appreciate your help in ensuring that the
information

on this page is as complete and accurate as possible. If you spot any
accessibility-related changes in iOS 10.2, please do let us know in the
comments.

Accessibility Bugs Introduced in iOS 10.2
a.. Users of the Freedom Scientific Focus line of braille displays may
experience issues pairing their display with devices running iOS 10.2. The
information we have available to us suggests that this issue primarily
affects users who attempt to re-pair a Focus display which has previously
been un-paired from the same iOS device, although in our testing it was
also
impossible to pair a Focus display for the first time when running iOS
10.2.

It is our understanding that Focus displays paired before updating to iOS
10.2 should continue to work correctly. This issue was apparently
discovered

very late in the beta cycle, and Apple has assured us that a fix is in the
works and will be released in the near future. In the meantime, we
recommend

that you do not upgrade to iOS 10.2 if you use a Focus braille display and
have a use case which may require you to un-pair and re-pair the display,
or

if you may need to pair a Focus display for the first time before Apple
releases a fix. At the time of posting, we believe that the Focus line of
displays are the only displays affected by this issue; in addition to the
Focus 14 Blue and Focus 40 Blue, the models we were able to test under iOS
10.2 include the Braille Edge, Braille Sense, Refreshabraille, VarioUltra,
and Brailliant.
b.. When opening a message in the Mail app, VoiceOver focus is no
longer

automatically placed in the body of the message. To find the body of the
message, the user must either swipe or explore by touch. It is our
understanding that this change is not by design, and that we should expect
to see this revert back to the previous behavior in a future iOS release.
c.. The VoiceOver rotor no longer consistently switches to the
'Actions'

rotor item when VoiceOver focus lands on an element which has actions
available.
d.. In certain situations, VoiceOver will randomly speak the contents
of

previous notifications which do not appear onscreen visually. This issue
does not occur consistently, and the notifications are no longer spoken

Alarm clock sound and iOS 10.1.1

2016-12-12 Thread Shai
Hello,
I am using VoiceOver with iOS 10.1.1 on an iPhone6s and I notice that
after setting an alarm using Siri or setting it manually via the Clock
app, and locking the screen, the alarm will sound and vibrate normally
but then the sound will become softer and remain in this state until
the alarm is disabled.
Has anyone else noticed this and has this been resolved in the new iOS
released today?
Thank you in advance for any responses

Re: question on texting.

2016-12-12 Thread Wayne Merritt
Yes, you can. If you have predictive text turned on in the
General/Keyboard section of Settings, you can see some suggestions as
you type. For VoiceOver users these are above the keyboard, but
perhaps they appear visually below the keyboard for "sighties," not
sure on that. This is a feature that I use regularly over the
autocorrect, which quickly gets annoying. Besides, predictive words
don't make any sound, so I can choose whether to use or not use them.
Verses autocorrect, which makes the annoying popping sound each time I
write a few letters. Anyway, hope that helps.

Wondering about the K480 bluetooth Keyboard

2016-12-12 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I have a couple of questions about this bluetooth keyboard. I am hoping
I put the information in the subject line, properly?

I just got this bluetooth keyboard from a friend of mine, this weekend.
I like how the keyboard slides out, like it used to do with much older
phones I had at one time.

I also like how it fits on to my phone, but that I can still access
everything easily. Although, I think if I ever need to remove this case,
I may need some serious help! Looks complicated,.

Anyway, can anyone tell me about how long it might take to charge?

My friend hasn't used the keyboard in a while, because she has a newer
phone. She thinks it needs to be charged, because it wouldn't connect
yesterday, when we tried to get it to work with my phone,.

Can I use the block for my Ipad Mini, to charge the keyboard?

Or do I just need to use a regular block, like you would use with the
Iphone? I wouldn't think it would really matter. But I also thought that
it was best to find out, one way or the other.

Also, is it possible to get a layout of the keyboard somewhere?

This would really come in handy for me. I am sure I will have commands
to learn as well, which should be interesting!

I've never really figured out bluetooth keyboard commands. But I would
like to do so.

Any advice, or suggestions you all might have for me, will be very
appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: IOS 10.2 and phone keypad issues:

2016-12-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Don and others,

Is this something a lot of people experience? I haven't noticed any difference
on my 6S Plus ever since I started using iOS 10, I am not using the current
10.2 beta so unless it's a problem here, what is exactly the issue?
When I make or receive a call I may have to tap to bring up the keypad, but
that has always been the case at times, but most of the time the keypad is
there and I actually have to hide it if I want access to any of the other
buttons.

Sieghard

Rajmund, I must be rapidly touching something outside of the edit field then
because as soon as I hit space or after I have typed a few letters, the
keyboard immediately disappears. I go to type another letter, and find that the
keyboard has been replaced by the web page.
Several times I have had to get my sighted wife to turn VoiceOver off and fill
out the form for me. I don't think this happened with the initial release of
iOS 10. I'm using iOS 10.1.1 on an iPhone 7.

Apple Releases iOS 10.2; Bringing Fixes, But Also Some New Bugs for
VoiceOver and Focus Braille Display Users
AppleVis | Empowering blind and low-vision users of Apple products
... / AppleVis

Apple has today released iOS 10.2 to the public.

For blind and low vision users, our limited testing suggests that
Apple has made continued progress towards addressing the
accessibility bugs present in iOS 10
. However, despite this
progress, our testing also suggests that a number of accessibility
bugs have been introduced in this release—one of which we believe to
be potentially critical for those who use the Focus line of braille
displays. Thus, if you have not already updated your device to iOS
10.2, we strongly recommend that you read this post and any comments
below before doing so.

As we always stress in these posts, it is impossible for us to test
all devices, apps, and use cases. With this and the fact that the
first version of iOS 10 introduced a number of bugs which were not
common to all users and use cases, it is very likely that there are
changes, regressions or improvements that we are not aware of at the
time of posting. With this in mind, we would greatly appreciate your
help in ensuring that the information on this page is as complete and
accurate as possible. If you spot any accessibility-related changes
in iOS 10.2, please do let us know in the comments.

Accessibility Bugs Introduced in iOS 10.2

  * Users of the Freedom Scientific Focus line of braille displays
may experience issues pairing their display with devices running
iOS 10.2. The information we have available to us suggests that
this issue primarily affects users who attempt to re-pair a Focus
display which has previously been un-paired from the same iOS
device, although in our testing it was also impossible to pair a
Focus display for the first time when running iOS 10.2. It is our
understanding that Focus displays paired before updating to iOS
10.2 should continue to work correctly. This issue was apparently
discovered very late in the beta cycle, and Apple has assured us
that a fix is in the works and will be released in the near
future. In the meantime, we recommend that you do not upgrade to
iOS 10.2 if you use a Focus braille display and have a use case
which may require you to un-pair and re-pair the display, or if
you may need to pair a Focus display for the first time before
Apple releases a fix. At the time of posting, we believe that the
Focus line of displays are the only displays affected by this
issue; in addition to the Focus 14 Blue and Focus 40 Blue, the
models we were able to test under iOS 10.2 include the Braille
Edge, Braille Sense, Refreshabraille, VarioUltra, and Brailliant.
  * When opening a message in the Mail app, VoiceOver focus is no
longer automatically placed in the body of the message. To find
the body of the message, the user must either swipe or explore by
touch. It is our understanding that this change is not by design,
and that we should expect to see this revert back to the previous
behavior in a future iOS release.
  * The VoiceOver rotor no longer consistently switches to the
'Actions' rotor item when VoiceOver focus lands on an element
which has actions available.
  * In certain situations, VoiceOver will randomly speak the contents
of previous notifications which do not appear onscreen visually.
This issue does not occur consistently, and the notifications are
no longer spoken once speech is stopped or focus is moved to
another element.

Accessibility Bugs Fixed in iOS 10.2

  * It is once again possible to navigate by character when in a text
field on a web page.
  * Enhanced Quality voices no longer occasionally revert to their
compact variants.
  * The Enhanced Quality Siri voices are once again available for use
with VoiceOver in all use cases.
  * It is now possible to manage shared access in the Home app using
VoiceOver.
  * VoiceOver now correctly announces the status of the Love and
Dislike buttons in the Music app.

Hi Terri,

I think you will enjoy your new Apple TV, I know I bought the exact same one
and I love it.

As for the remote, below the gesture area, from the top left going down, you
have the Menu, Siri and Play/Pause buttons. From the top right going down, you
have the Home button and below that is the Volume Up and Down rocker.

To enable VoiceOver, simply press the Play/Pause button three times and after a
few tries, VoiceOver should begin speaking.

When inputting text, the keyboard is layed out a little diffrently with the
first row being the letters A to Z and the next row below being the numbers and
punctuation symbols. Below that row is buttons to toggle between lowercase and
uppercase letters, but if you press the Play/Pause button, this will do the
same.

You can also use Siri to dictate anything in an edit field, this also includes
passwords. Simply press and hold the Siri button and dictate. When you're
done, let go of the button and your text will be inputted.

While on the Home screen, you can even ask Siri, by pressing and holding while
you talk and letting go when your done.

You can always check on www.applevis.com for How To's on using the Apple TV. I
believe that David Woodbridge has quite a few podcasts on doing just about
anything on the Apple TV.

Hope this helps!

Subject:Got my new Apple TV, need a bit of help!

Hello everyone,

Well, I broke down and purchased my new Apple tv last night. I got the
32 gig model. I didn't mess with it last night though, because I just
wasn't feeling the best.

It's all open, and all hooked up now. It is a little chunkier, and
bigger. But I think I like that. I do like the remote much better,
because it too seems thicker, and maybe not as easy to lose. I lost one
once. LOL!

Now here is where I need some help please.

When I go to the input where the Apple tv is, nothing seems to happen.
On my older model, it asked about Voiceover.

So first of all, can someone kindly explain the layout of the buttons to
me, and what they are?

This would really be very helpful. I found the area for the gestures.

Now how can I get voiceover on?

Will I need sighted assistence for this?

I pushed a couple of buttons just to see what would happen. I don't know
if anything happened on the screen. But I heard some cute little noises.
LOL!

I decided to quit messing with it though, because I didn't want to mess
anything up.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Now I am kind of getting
excited about this thing. Although, I'm not really looking forward to
adding on all the apps I may want, or remembering passwords.

Thank you,

Terri

 Hey Thom,

 Regarding your questions.
I have added the traffic light positions manually.
It doesn't let you know if the light is green or not but it is in my
 plans to do it.
Next week i'm going to update the app so it can give vibrations to an
apple watch as well as play an audio message in case you use headsets.
I'm still working on navigation in order to make it as good as
 blindsquare but free of charge.

Apple has today released iOS 10.2 to the public.

For blind and low vision users, our limited testing suggests that Apple has
made continued progress towards addressing the accessibility bugs present in
iOS 10. However, despite this
progress, our testing also suggests that a number of accessibility bugs have
been introduced in this release—one of which we believe to be potentially
critical for those who use the Focus line of braille displays. Thus, if you
have not already updated your device to iOS 10.2, we strongly recommend that
you read this post and any comments below before doing so.

  * Users of the Freedom Scientific Focus line of braille displays may
experience issues pairing their display with devices running iOS 10.2. The
information we have available to us suggests that this issue primarily affects
users who attempt to re-pair a Focus display which has previously been
un-paired from the same iOS device, although in our testing it was also
impossible to pair a Focus display for the first time when running iOS 10.2. It
is our understanding that Focus displays paired before updating to iOS 10.2
should continue to work correctly. This issue was apparently discovered very
late in the beta cycle, and Apple has assured us that a fix is in the works and
will be released in the near future. In the meantime, we recommend that you do
not upgrade to iOS 10.2 if you use a Focus braille display and have a use case
which may require you to un-pair and re-pair the display, or if you may need to
pair a Focus display for the first time before Apple releases a fix. At the
time of posting, we believe that the Focus line of displays are the only
displays affected by this issue; in addition to the Focus 14 Blue and Focus 40
Blue, the models we were able to test under iOS 10.2 include the Braille Edge,
Braille Sense, Refreshabraille, VarioUltra, and Brailliant.
  * When opening a message in the Mail app, VoiceOver focus is no longer
automatically placed in the body of the message. To find the body of the
message, the user must either swipe or explore by touch. It is our
understanding that this change is not by design, and that we should expect to
see this revert back to the previous behavior in a future iOS release.
  * The VoiceOver rotor no longer consistently switches to the 'Actions'
rotor item when VoiceOver focus lands on an element which has actions available.
  * In certain situations, VoiceOver will randomly speak the contents of
previous notifications which do not appear onscreen visually. This issue does
not occur consistently, and the notifications are no longer spoken once speech
is stopped or focus is moved to another element.

Accessibility Bugs Fixed in iOS 10.2

  * It is once again possible to navigate by character when in a text field
on a web page.
  * Enhanced Quality voices no longer occasionally revert to their compact
variants.
  * The Enhanced Quality Siri voices are once again available for use with
VoiceOver in all use cases.
  * It is now possible to manage shared access in the Home app using
VoiceOver.
  *   VoiceOver now correctly announc

Hello Alan,
Not Mary,
But I'm sure she won't mind me sharing it. If you have an iPad
on IOS10, you will know it, and hate it. The 2 finger flick up
to read all is broken. Rather than the message body, it reads
the entire screen, just like on the iPad. It is still there,
unfortunately. In fact, public beta 7 is what they have released
as the final, as I can't see an update. Anyway, a step back, if
you ask me.

This is how I activate links or check boxes.

I double Tap, I hold the tap for a second or so and it usually works. But if I
tap quickly and release my finger, usually things won't work. I have also
spoken to Amazon and filled out the feedback form, but??

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Thanks,

Sieghard

RE: battery draining need to reboot

2016-12-12 Thread Chip Orange
Sorry, but I completely disagree with the advice or theory here stated as
"battery conditioning". According to many articles from authoritative sources
(such as Pupular Mechanics), this isn't necessary with today's "smart" lithium
ion batteries.

sorry, but i haven't read all of this thread, but how long have you had your
phone, and could it be a battery issue? Batteries don't last forever, and if
you don't condition them correctly, meaning, let them run completely flat,
every month or 2, then doing a full charge, without breaking that charging
process, it could give you the issues, that you are currently experiencing.

If i were you, i would take it into an apple store, and let them run a full
diagnostics on your handset.

Dave.

Apple this article on this topic which I posted to the list earlier, it is
mentioned that Apple acknowledges this bug and says that it was not an intended

Browsing or searching Netflicks

2016-12-12 Thread Jim Portillo
Hi there.

So, now I'm getting into Netflicks, after who knows how long it's been around.
I'm interested in knowing a good way of searching or browsing the site. I know
there are categories, but it doesn't seem like it lists all of the shows within
that category.
Also, I'd like to see what they have in Spanish, but again, I'm only seeing a
limited number of selections, unless I type a specific name of a specific show.
Does anyone know how I can get a full list of a given category? And, how can I
look for things in Spanish in general?
Jim

Some big audio issues with iPhone 7 and new update

2016-12-12 Thread Gordon
So major volume issues were introduced today with the new update on my
end. The most noticeable would be when unlocking the phone and ending a
phone call. I'm not sure if this is some sort of bug since audio is
routed to two speakers or what. When unlocking the phone it takes a
couple of seconds for the volume to raise to where you have it set. It
starts out low and gains over a couple of seconds. this also applies
when ending a phone call. I have my rotor volume set at 15 percent and
I've tried this with audio ducking on and off. And of course nothing
changed with the lowness of the alert tones. I really wish Apple would
tie that to the ringer and alarm volume. I've never seen any other phone
use the media stream for alert tones. I also have the box unchecked
where ringer volume has to be adjusted in settings and the volume
buttons only control the media stream.

Made a mistake on the type of Bluetooth keyboard I need help with

2016-12-12 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everybody,

I want to apologize for my message I wrote to the list earlier. I asked for
help with a Bluetooth keyboard, and I gave the wrong Bluetooth keyboard
information. I realized that it was still showing my older Bluetooth keyboard.
Which was a Logitech.

Anyway, my friend gave me a box wave buddy, Bluetooth keyboard. I don't know if
there are different models of these, or not.
However, my phone isn't even showing it in the list of options. My friend
thought that the keyboard needed to be charged, because she had not used it in
quite a while. He has a different iPhone now.

Anyway, I tried to charge it earlier. But I didn't let it charge for very long,
because I needed my phone. Can I use my block from my iPad mini to plug in the
USB cable, to charge this Bluetooth keyboard? Or do I need to use just a normal
charging block, like one that might have come with my iPhone 5S? Also, how do I
even know if this Bluetooth keyboard is on?
There is a very small switch on the bottom right side, if it is on your phone
and the phone is facing you. You can move it up or down, but you have to use a
fingernail to do so. Right now, but I have it in the up position.

About how long might it take for this keyboard to charge? Also, once it is
charged, and my phone recognizes it, how do I pair it with my phone?

I know nothing about this keyboard. Although I have wanted one for a long time
now. I like how it has to slide out keyboard. And for my last question.
Can I find a layout of the keyboard, somewhere? Or, is there a way for me to
learn the Bluetooth keyboard commands?
I haven't ever done this before, even when I had my other keyboard. I mainly
used it to write texts, or emails. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: Made a mistake on the type of Bluetooth keyboard I need help with

2016-12-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Terri,

I can't help you with the on/off question, I would just Google it, chances are
you'll find a user manual online.

As for charging it, if it charges via a Mini or Micro USB cable you can plug it
into anything you have that can take a USB cable, it makes no difference if you
use the wall adapter of your iPhone, iPad or of some third party product that
came with one.

Something like that normally would probably charge in a couple of hours, but
even charging it for half an hour should get you half a charge since the speed
with which batteries charge decreases when they get fuller, e.g. it may take
half an hour to charge them to half full, but another hour and a half to charge
the second half.

You phone won't see the keyboard until you put it in pairing mode. I can't tell
you how that is done with this keyboard, again this would be in the user
manual. Chances are there could be a small hole somewhere where you have to
press a resessed button with the tip of a pen or paper clip.

Regards,
Sieghard

Tidal music service

2016-12-12 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
I wonder if anyone here has experience with a TIDAL music service. Specifically
of course, the first question would be about accessibility and ease-of-use of
the app. I'm kind of interested in the higher fidelity audio that is offered,
although I don't know the extent of the catalog. I'm mostly a classical music
and jazz listener. Of course, I have iTunes match and a large Apple Music
library. But the notion of lossless is intriguing, especially as I have a pair
of headphones with digital to analog converter that I think would take good
advantage of this lossless service. So I'm wondering if folks have had good or
bad experiences.

how to get apps from phone to iPad and then have them sync

2016-12-12 Thread regina alvarado
Basic questions. I am getting an iPad Air II. It is 32 gigs. It will be
basically blank. How do I get apps synced to it from the iPhone without doing
it by hand? I had a 16 gig iPad that I had somehow gotten only to display apps
for reading and videos and a few other things that were not games. Now I will
have a 32 gig and want to have the same things on each device. I forgot what I
did. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. I know this is basic, but just cannot
remember what I did before.

got this volume thing pegged

2016-12-12 Thread Gordon
So whenever voice over is running the alerts volume is tied to the media
volume. when voice over is not running it's tied to the ringer volume as
most other phones would be. I set my ring tone volume up to 80 percent
in settings. Then I went back to home and turned voice over off with the
triple press of the home button. I sent myself a text and the alerts
volume is where the ringer volume was. I turned voice over back on and
sent myself a text not changing any volumes and it was low again down
with the media volume. So something with voice over is making this
change. We need to all report this in hopes to get it fixed. You all can
easily duplicate this on your own phones if you want.

Re: got this volume thing pegged

2016-12-12 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Gordon,
I would be happy to report this, except I'm not experiencing it as a problem.
You said you had a volume set to 15%. That's awfully low. Or did I
misunderstand? I admit that there is a slight decrease in volume, but it's no
big thing and it comes back. Compared to other bugs, such as those with email
threads, HTML messages reading rows and columns, and the much discussed bug
that Apple has admitted to with email, where the two finger flick up doesn't
work like it used to, this just doesn't seem like a big deal. Can't you raise
your rotor volume up to something more than 15%? If I put my volume down to
15%, I'm not sure I could really hear it unless I was in a very quiet
environment. Can you help me understand what the real issue is here? Sorry.

2016-12-12 Thread Gordon
Ok my rotor volume is set at 15 percent right now. I adjust the media
volume to a level where the tone can be heard, but voice over is still
loud enough for people on the other side of the room to hear and
completely understand. But since the media volume is tied to alerts, I
have to have it up a little to hear the tones. I use the rotor volume to

but goes back to the ringer and alert stream when it's not.

Re: got this volume thing pegged

2016-12-12 Thread Richard Turner

I just set my rotor volume to 15 %. For someone across the room to hear it at
that level I would have to turn the volume up to nearly maximum using the
volume buttons on the side of the phone.
Then, just about any ringer volume setting would be terribly loud.
The idea is to find a reasonable balance between cranking up the volume using
the volume buttons, and the settings on the rotor and in the sound settings.
Without being in the same room, trying to describe all this in writing is going
to be extremely difficult.
Perhaps you could do a recording and put it on dropbox to give an example of
what you are saying.
Just my thoughts.
