Re: DirecTV Now on AppleTV

2017-02-28 Thread Kliphton Miller
1st, yes the 2nd thing you here is what is up next. 2nd, to add things to your
watch list, you can do this 2 ways. You can either search for a show, and do
it that way, or you can go into networks, shows, or movies and do it that way.
Keep in mind, it has to be available for the watch list or that option won’t be
there.

Re: Airpod question.

2017-02-28 Thread Kliphton Miller
Wow, I use to live in the cold capital of the country, in MN near the Canadian
boarder, and boy did it get cold up there. I Now live in FL, where it barely
dips below 50 degrees, so I guess I take the warm weather for granted also even
though I have only ben here for 3 years. But yes, not having a volume control
on the device would be a deal breaker for me too. I haven’t gotten a pair in
my hands, but I suspect that based on the size of the AirPods, they probably
thought it would make the device bulky? Who knows.

Hi, Sieghard,

Perhaps I didn't put them deep enough in my ears, but I was rather surprised to
not hear bass pretty much at all. I'll give them another try. These have a
wire connecting the two earpieces which I think is good.

Re: BeatsX Earbuds

2017-02-28 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
Glad to hear that the AirPods sound good; I'll have to check them out one of
these days.
I have a related question. There have been occasions when I've gone into
Settings > Music and fiddled with the different EQ settings. Some of those EQ
profiles are okay, others are so-so. Why is it that Apple seemed to "sandbox"
the equalizer and didn't make it global so that you could apply equalization
when using apps like Pandora, iHeartRadio, OOTunes, et cetera? Is there some
sort of app out there that would let you apply equalization globally? Just
curious.

Re: How do Nearby Explorer and Sendaro Seeing GPS compare?

2017-02-28 Thread Mike Arrigo
No contest here, nearby explorer is better, hands down. When you change
direction with nearby explorer, the new direction is automatically
spoken, and the upcoming street is announced as soon as it can be
determined. With the Sendero app, it doesn't speak the approaching
street until you are just about there. With the Sendero app, you have
to feel around on the screen to get the information that nearby
explorer provides automatically. I think Sendero will need to make some
major improvements to their app if it is to remain competitive.

Re: automatic app updates?

2017-02-28 Thread Wayne Merritt
Though I don't use automatic updates either, note that if you turn it
on in iTunes and App Store settings, it will effect all apps--free or
paid. Since accessibility can be affected by app udpates, as Richard
described with DropBox, and since I like to know what is updated and
decide from there, I have not enabled this setting.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get them to download to my

Thanks.

Re: unable to download books from Kindle

2017-02-28 Thread Michael Feir
There's some sort of major problem with a server Amazon runs. You may not
actually have a problem once they fix their server. A bunch of sites are
having trouble or are offline since they also made use of this server. You
might just find that the problem goes away in a while.

Thanks, I forgot to mention the fact that Nearby Explorer downloads the maps
onto your phone.
That is a huge difference that I completely spaced.
That is a good advantage in case you travel through an area that doesn't have
decent cell coverage. You just need to be able to use a few satellites, which
is easier than you would think.
Navigon is another GPS app that stores the maps on the phone, but Nearby
Explorer has been designed for visually impaired, so it gives you more
information. than Navigon.

RE: How do Nearby Explorer and Sendaro Seeing GPS compare?

2017-02-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

If you have Nearby Explorer or Seeing Eye GPS you really shouldn't need to run
another app such as Maps or Google Maps at the same time since both of these
apps give you current information as you walk as well as turn by turn
directions. Blindsquare gives you information about what street you are on and
what cross streets are coming up and so on, but it doesn't navigate so that is
where running two apps comes in. I also find that Blindsquare which uses Open
Street Maps is sometimes not as accurate and a few months ago when I was in
Calgary I was in an area where surprisingly it gave me nothing, but Seeing Eye
worked fine. Blindsquare also does not tell you the type of intersection like
4-way or 3-way etc., that is something I really like with the Seeing Eye app
and have always liked in the past when I had a Trekker Maestro or the MobileGeo
app on my old Windows smartphone back in the stone ages.
Maybe somebody can confirm this, but I assume and hope Nearby Explorer gives
you that information? Based on some of the statements I heard and especially
that recent updates have really improved Nearby Explorer, I am tempted to buy
it.
Mike, maybe it's time for another comparison between Seeing Eye and Nearby
Explorer at the current state of both apps since I'm sure both have added
features and improved since you last did this.

Regards,
Sieghard

Thanks for chiming in Mike. I was hoping you would, since I know you have done
some thorough work with both apps.
I have not done enough with both to make such a strong statement, but I have no
reason to disagree. Each release of Nearby Explorer is getting better.

Subject: RE: How do Nearby Explorer and Sendaro Seeing GPS compare?

Regards,
Sieghard

What adbantages could I expect from having both Nearby Explorer and Blindsquare

Thanks again, keith

Thanks for chiming in Mike. I was hoping you would, since I know you have done
some thorough work with both apps.
I have not done enough with both to make such a strong statement, but I have no
reason to disagree. Each release of Nearby Explorer is getting better.

2017-02-28 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Mark and all following this thread,

I think I agree with Sieghard regarding the price of the Airpods being a bit
high for their current feature set. But I've not even played with them so my
opinion will just serve me. I do want to make sure I understood what the
current Airpods can or can't do. Since I use my iPhone more than half the time
for book reading with BARD Mobile, Audible, Voice Dream, etc., I use the remote
button on my wired earpods all the time for stopping playback, rewinding,
changing volume, etc. Is my understanding correct that in order to do the
rewinding and stopping of playback using the Airpods that I would have to pull
my phone out of my pocket and access the applicable app controls on screen to
to this? I thought I remembered Sieghard saying this but I'd rather ask
directly and not depend on my memory.

Thanks in advance.

You make an excellent point about how one's environment, such as ambient

I definitely take the warm climate, down here in Los Angeles, for granted

Your point is well put and well taken.

Perhaps the next generation of Airpods will have more physical controls along

options from which to choose.

Yes, you can use the volume buttons on the phone or you can tap the Airpod and
when SIRI comes up you can ask SIRI to lower the volume (or increase it) or you
can say something like "Set the volume to 55%".
Mark, in case you still read this thread, I did actually try out the Airpods at
an Apple Store and I took some time to do so.
I am totally with you with respect to how they feel and sound, I think they are
a bit overpriced, but I'd fork out the $220 Canadian instantly if they had a
volume control, offered Play/Pause functionality as well as a way to invoke
SIRI. Yes, I know you can just get SIRI going and tell SIRI to Play or Pause or
to change the volume, but there are situations where I may not want to talk
into thin air in front of me to do this and for me these are basic functions I
am looking for and it just doesn't make sense to me to push these Airpods as if
they were the reinvention of the wheel and then I have to pull out my phone if

Hi Alan,

You currently cannot adjust volume or rewind/forward on the Airpods like you do
with the inline remote on the Earpods. You can change it so that tapping the
Airpods will do Play/Pause instead of bringing up SIRI, but that's about it.

Dropbox Version 36.2 Bug and Response to Their Tech Support

2017-02-28 Thread Alan Lemly
Hello List,

As we've been discussing, the latest Dropbox version 36.2 update has a bug
that causes the app to close or crash when double tapping on the files
button and attempting to peruse them. I've traded a couple of messages with
Dropbox Support and received a question from them earlier today asking if
the problem persists when closing the Dropbox app and restarting it. Here's
a quote from the email:

" Could you please try restarting the app and let us know if the issue
persists?"

Unfortunately, I can't remember if I tested this specifically although I'm
pretty sure I did close the app and try it a number of times with the bug
still present. And I can't check it again because I uninstalled version 36.2
and replaced it with version 34.2 on my iPhone.

If someone will make sure version 36.2 is closed out of the App Switcher and
restart it and post back to confirm whether the problem still persists, I'd
very much appreciate it.

Re: How do Nearby Explorer and Sendaro Seeing GPS compare?

2017-02-28 Thread Richard Turner

Keith,
If you have Nearby Explorer, you will not want to run Blind Square at the same
time, since they will both be trying to tell you of the cross streets from
slightly different perspectives and with different map data, so that could be
rather confusing.
Not to mention they would also have different information about points of
interest.
And, as others have said, you will not want to run more than one app that does
turn-by-turn navigation. I think of these apps this way.
Blind Square is a good orientation app.
Google Maps is a good turn-by-turn navigation app.
I personally do not like the interface of Apple Maps, but I'm probably in the
minority there.
Nearby Explorer and Seeing Eye GPS are very good for both orientation and
turn-by-turn navigation.
Because of the map data being downloaded onto your phone, Nearby Explorer will
work in more places in the United States than will Seeing Eye GPS, assuming you
have the 4 plus gigabytes available on your phone for their maps.
Navigon is also a very good turn-by-turn app, and you can save space on your
device by only downloading maps for just the states you will be traveling in.
But, it does not help with the local streets you are crossing the way Blind
Square, Nearby Explorer and Seeing Eye GPS do.
Then to muddy the waters even more, there is MapQuest in the United States
which is another, very good, turn-by-turn navigation app that uses maps from
the cloud.
I hope that helps rather than confuses.
Richard

2017-02-28 Thread Richard Turner
I had a similar exchange of emails with their tech support today and confirmed
that closing it out of the app switcher does not help at all. Nor does deleting
and reinstalling it. 36.2 is simply broken.
I think they may have finally heard me.
What surprises me is I covered all that in my initial bug report to them.
But, after saying it several times, maybe they will fix it sooner rather than
later.

RE: Dropbox Version 36.2 Bug and Response to Their Tech Support

2017-02-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

Absolutely, closing the app, restarting the phone, whatever you try causes it
to crash.
I have, however, confirmed that at least on my 6S Plus this only happens when
Voiceover is running.
I just demonstrated how it crashes as soon as I tap on the Files tab to one of
my employees, then I closed the app from the app switcher, turned Voiceover off
and asked him to open it. He opened the app, tapped on the Files tab, opened a
few of my folders in there and all worked just fine.
He left a folder open and when I restarted Voiceover I could see the files in
that folder, but as soon as I performed the scrub gesture to back out to the
main folders list it again crashed back to the home screen.
Anybody who is in conversation with Dropbox may feel free to copy and paste my
above description to let them know that this seems to be a Voiceover issue,
hopefully they'll fix it anyways and quickly, I'm sure if this happened to
every single user it would have already been done.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Dropbox Version 36.2 Bug and Response to Their Tech Support

Hello List,

As we've been discussing, the latest Dropbox version 36.2 update has a bug that
causes the app to close or crash when double tapping on the files button and
attempting to peruse them. I've traded a couple of messages with Dropbox
Support and received a question from them earlier today asking if the problem
persists when closing the Dropbox app and restarting it. Here's a quote from
the email:

" Could you please try restarting the app and let us know if the issue
persists?"

Unfortunately, I can't remember if I tested this specifically although I'm
pretty sure I did close the app and try it a number of times with the bug still
present. And I can't check it again because I uninstalled version 36.2 and
replaced it with version 34.2 on my iPhone.

If someone will make sure version 36.2 is closed out of the App Switcher and
restart it and post back to confirm whether the problem still persists, I'd
very much appreciate it.

Re: How do Nearby Explorer and Sendaro Seeing GPS compare?

2017-02-28 Thread Mike Arrigo
I plan on it, just have to find the time to do it, but I can already
tell you that nearby explorer is going to blow the seeing eye app out
of the water.

Original message:

Hi Keith,

If you have Nearby Explorer or Seeing Eye GPS you really shouldn't need
to run another app such as Maps or Google Maps at the same time since
both of these apps give you current information as you walk as well as
turn by turn directions. Blindsquare gives you information about what
street you are on and what cross streets are coming up and so on, but
it doesn't navigate so that is where running two apps comes in. I also
find that Blindsquare which uses Open Street Maps is sometimes not as
accurate and a few months ago when I was in Calgary I was in an area
where surprisingly it gave me nothing, but Seeing Eye worked fine.
Blindsquare also does not tell you the type of intersection like 4-way
or 3-way etc., that is something I really like with the Seeing Eye app
and have always liked in the past when I had a Trekker Maestro or the
MobileGeo app on my old Windows smartphone back in the stone ages.
Maybe somebody can confirm this, but I assume and hope Nearby Explorer
gives you that information? Based on some of the statements I heard and
especially that recent updates have really improved Nearby Explorer, I
am tempted to buy it.
Mike, maybe it's time for another comparison between Seeing Eye and
Nearby Explorer at the current state of both apps since I'm sure both
have added features and improved since you last did this.

Regards,
Sieghard

I have not done enough with both to make such a strong statement, but I
have no reason to disagree. Each release of Nearby Explorer is getting better.

But, after saying it several times, maybe they will fix it sooner rather than
later.

Re: How do Nearby Explorer and Sendaro Seeing GPS compare?

2017-02-28 Thread Feliciano Godoy
I'm not quite understanding your question. If you set landmarks, you will be
able to navigate a parking lot with these landmarks in place.

Feliciano

BlindSquare simultaneously with Google maps is powerful. What are you trying to
gain from the other options? What are you currently not liking with your combo?

No contest here, nearby explorer is better, hands down. When you change
direction with nearby explorer, the new direction is automatically spoken, and
the upcoming street is announced as soon as it can be determined. With the
Sendero app, it doesn't speak the approaching street until you are just about
there. With the Sendero app, you have to feel around on the screen to get the
information that nearby explorer provides automatically. I think Sendero will
need to make some major improvements to their app if it is to remain
competitive.

Hi,

I’m looking to supplement my Blindsquare with either Nearby Explorer or Sendaro
Seeing Eye. Is there one of these that clearly stands out?

Thanks in advance, Keith --
