Re: Phone pricing/upgrading, was: Harming battery if left on a charger all the time

2018-01-14 Thread Bill Gallik
I got my first - an iPhone 5 - in September, 2012. When I upgraded to my
current iPhone 6 I “lent” the iPhone 5 to my niece so she would have reasonable
communications while she’s driving her two daughters around Northern Wisconsin
during our notably fierce winter months. She’s continuing to use that iPhone 5
without any issues just fine.

I will add that when Apple came out with the list of iPhone 5 serial numbers my
original iPhone was in that list; I sent that iPhone in for the customary
exchange to cover the faulty battery issue. I do believe I will not upgrade
until the iPhone my niece is using “hits the skids” and then I’ll upgrade and
offer he my iPhone 6. But it does appear that the iPhone 5 is still holding
its’ own; that’s going on six years now so I certainly got my money’s worth on
the purchase of that iPhone. I’m not in any hurry to upgrade because, frankly,
I’d prefer to wait for the next incarnation of the iPhone.

Yes, those would be the last 4 digits of your 16-digit credit card number, the
rest doesn’t show for security reasons.

Hi Flor,

It is only the first digit which determines card type, Anna correctly pointed
this out, 4=Visa and 5=Mastercard. There is of course more information hidden
in a card number for those who know how to read it. For example, if with a
Mastercard number the second number is a 1, then the second and third digit
identifies the bank, if the second number is a 2, then digits 2, 3 and 4 are
the bank identifier and if it’s a 4 then digits 2, 3, 4 and 5 are said
identifier. My Mastercard starts with a “55” and in this case digits 2 through
5 are the bank identifier.
With Mastercard all other digits after that except for the last one are the
actual account number and the last digit is what is called a check digit.
The only cards where the first 2 numbers are required to know what card type it
is are those which start with a 3, American Express, Diners Club and Carte
Blanche. American Express cards always start with “37” and I think now some
start with “34”, if the first two are 30, 36 or 38 it’s a Diners Club or Carte
Blanche.
There is an online “BIN” (Bank Identification Number) database where you can
type in a card number and it will give you the issueing bank, issueing country
and so on, but it has a captcha which only a sighted person can solve and
beyond 12 inquiries it’s a paid system.

I haven’t ever come across one of those yet, but I believe Mastercard has
introduced a new BIN (Bank Identification Number) which starts with “2”, this
is based on an email I received last year:

Dear Valued Merchant,
Effective October 14, 2016, MasterCard is introducing a new series of Bank
Identification Numbers (BINs) that begin with "2" (e.g. 222100-272099).
This BIN series will help to support the expanding payment industry and growing
number of cardholders globally.

I guess it’s just a matter of time until it was or will again be necessary for
these systems to be expanded just as where there used to be one area code often
for an entire state or canadian province there are now multiple area codes to
support the growing numbers required for cell phones, Voip lines and all that.
It will be interesting to see when our current system of a 3-digit area code
followed by a 7-digit phone number will not be enough any more to provide the
amount of numbers required and maybe 4-digit area codes start to show up or
instead of a 7-digit number there will then be 9 or 10-digit numbers.

Regards,
Sieghard

No, it does not mean that. The first digits on the card tell a computer or card
network what type the card is. If a card number begins with 54, it’s a
MasterCard. If a card number begins with 45, it’s a Visa. These are known to
the computer, etc. I i know what my card type is, and I know I have the number
typed in correcly. (Incidentally my card doesn’t yet support ApplePay.)

Hi,
With all due respect, still after reading this article I see nothing that would
indicate why one wouldn’t be able to advance through the card entry process.
The authorization hold is common but wouldn’t prevent any purchases or
verifications from taking place; nor did it mention a time period during which
the card or the associated account couldn’t be used to download or purchase
apps.
I’m glad you got it sorted by using another method still the mystery remains
why that card wouldn’t easily activate and integrate itself into the account.
I’m glad such has never befallen me and my Apple ID thus far.

Are you sure it’s not just asking to verify by requesting your credit card’s
3-digit card verification code (on the back of the card)?

If I have a couple of cards registered and if I switch from one to another is
usually comes up and wants me to do that. The screen looks like it has

on it, enter the code and everything is fine after that.

Hi,
With all due respect, still after reading this article I see nothing that would
indicate why one wouldn’t be able to advance through the card entry process.

Re: Message: Credit card number does not match credit card type.

2018-01-14 Thread Flor Lynch
The Bank issued me with a new card, a MasterCard, when the change was made.
(The card also has a number beginning with 54. The change was also reflected in
my iTunes, as I provided the info there at that time (in 2016).
I rather think that it’s related to my (earlier today) change from password
entry to Touch ID as the means for verifying a download or purchase. Had I not
wanted to download something today, I might not have encountered the issue.
Fortunately, I do have an alternative that did work for the verification.

  Hi,

I’m attempting to set up my payment info in the App Store for my first free
download of an app on this iPhone 6s, having verified my fingerprint ID and
entered my password when asked. (This is for a free app, but ‘verification is
required’ probably as it’s my first download on this iPhone from the App Store.
The 16-digit Credit card number, CVV, and Expiry Date, are correct.

So, what does, “Credit card number does not match credit card type” mean?
Does it mean, that I must contact my card provider to proceed anyway? Or, does
it mean something else? Or does it signify something else entirely unrelated?
Or, does it mean that I should simply try PayPal and hope it works? (When I/my
Bank changed from Visa to MasterCard, iTunes/App Store had accepted that in the
past and I made purchases using the latter card type.)

  Any good ideas? Thanks.

Why don’t you log in to http://AppleId.apple.com and delete your card

RE: Message: Credit card number does not match credit card type.

2018-01-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Re: DELETING ALL NOTIFICATIONS!!!

2018-01-14 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
My biggest current issue with iDevices is this very thing. In early iterations
of the operating system that clear button was always present in the top
left-hand corner. Now sometimes I have to swipe through many and I mean many
notifications to find a clear button usually presenting itself after an earlier
today heading if at all. I miss the old days when one could both find the
clear button at will all the time or group notifications by app and clear them
in those created sections (sad face). I submit feedback on this almost monthly
because I think it’s important functionality to have whether one can see or
not. It certainly made managing notifications much easier for me when it was
implemented thusly on both accounts.

Any good ideas? Thanks.

Re: Message: Credit card number does not match credit card type.

2018-01-14 Thread Flor Lynch
Hi,
That may be the case. However, I didn’t find it when I looked, and I know from
googling it that sighted users (who can see the screen!) have also had this
problem. Apple Support posters don’t mention that scenario their replies,
either.

There’s one possibility in that iTunes puts a ‘temporary hold’ on a credit card
for verification purposes when a switch or change of some kind has been made to
the payment mathod (in this case Touch ID instead of typed password)? (It
wasn’t long since I had checked to see if ApplePay would work on my card or
not.)

In the meantime, iTunes can live happily with my PayPal. I may returbn to it in
a few days.

Thanks a million folks for this valuable information.
I do not have a security company, and I have no intention to hire one. It is
simply not needed in my area.
I asked my question because I have a tendency to lock myself out often. That
is why I thought of fingerprint or digital lock.
Now, I wonder how hard is it to install these locks. Do I need to hire a
specialist to assemble and install these kinds of locks, or I would be able to
do it myself? When it comes to the regular mechanical locks with keys, I
always change them myself without hiring a Locksmith. I am not sure how hard it
would be to install a digital lock by myself!
Cheers,
Cris

Find out the exact model and Google it, you’ll find all the features, specs and
most likely a user manual in PDF.
I don’t know why anybody in their right mind would want to Alexa enable a
doorlock. Alexa has no security as far as I can tell and if somebody knows you
have Alexa and a smart doorlock that works with it all they have to do is walk
up to an open window and ask Alexa to unlock your door. If I want to unlock my
Schlage Sense with SIRI it only works if I first unlock my phone with Touch Id
or my passcode.

Not any more, quite a few electronic lock companies made fingerprint doorlocks
years ago, I had one and so did a friend of mine, and they were the biggest
pain in the neck.
Depending on how much you want to spend, you are much better off with an
electronic lock with a keypad or a smartlock which you can unlock with your
phone.
I have a Weiser electronic lock at my retail store which was actually installed
by my alarm company and which has a keypad, but it also connects via the
Zigbbee protocol to my alarm panel so I can unlock it via the alarm app
remotely.
At home we just recently purchased a Schlage Sense smartlock which has home kit
support. This means you can unlock it by telling SIRI “Unlock my front door” or
from the home app. It has also a keypad, but it’s a touchscreen so you’d have
to put at least a dot on the 5 or maybe put a tactile dot on the 1, 3, 5, 7 and
9 to be able to use it manually.
Before we bought it we had a Schlage electronic lock on the front door and I
really like it, too. It has a lock button at the top and underneat two rows of
buttons, 1 to 5 and 6 to 0. The lock button is above the 3, so in the middle
above the two number rows. This particular lock (forgot the model) doesn’t
actually have a motor so the single 9 Volt battery lasts forever because all it
does is to engage a deadbolt which you turn by hand to lock and unlock the
door. Less high tech, but also completely reliable and we now moved this lock
to our patio door.
If there are still fingerprint locks around I really advise you to stay away
from them, if you don’t want to spend too much then you can get a lock like
that electronic Schlage with the keypad I described for around $100 and it’s

Re: Message: Credit card number does not match credit card type.

2018-01-14 Thread MamaPeach
It means they don’t match, a Visa usually starts with a 4, a Mastercard usually
starts with a 5 and a Discover card usually starts with a 6, this is how you
can tell what kind of card you have. If you put in that it is a visa but the
number starts with a 5 or a 6, then they won’t match because it should start
with a 4.

Subject: Message: Credit card number does not match credit card type.

Does
it mean, that I must contact my card provider to proceed anyway? Or, does it
mean something else? Or does it signify something else entirely unrelated? Or,
does it mean that I should simply try PayPal and hope it works? (When I/my Bank
changed from Visa to MasterCard, iTunes/App Store had accepted that in the past
and I made purchases using the latter card type.)

Any good ideas? Thanks.

Re: Touch ID While Charging

2018-01-14 Thread John Panarese
If you read some articles out there, that is how they suggest you do it.
Also, using the thumbs as your primary means for Touch ID is also recommended
over other fingers. When setting up Touch ID, try to place your finger in
different angles each time you place it. This gives you a much better chance of
always being able to unlocking the phone when you use it.

Re: Touch ID While Charging

2018-01-14 Thread englishrider91
I get this behavior sometimes when my phone is lying flat on a table at a weird
angle from me. It's probably the angle you're having to approach your phone
from while it's charging. You may have to turn your phone a little if it's on a
flat surface in order to approach its Touch ID senser straight on as you
probably did when setting up your finger print for use with Touch ID. Does this
make sense? I think this is one of the reasons the phone asks you to place your
finger on the phone at so many angles when setting up the finger print.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: Harming battery if left on a charger all the time

2018-01-14 Thread Daniel McGee
Thank you mike and everyone else for your info, experiences providing links
etc.

It all has been useful knowledge in obtaining.

I'm truly greatful for the Mac and iPhone Google groups because everyone helps
out each other and while they can get rather busy sometimes, that is also a
reason why I like these groups. Because they are still active today and such
activity is fantastic for one and all in passing information around and
providing help in email form to those who need it regardless of there ability.
We can all learn from each other. :)

Re: Message: Credit card number does not match credit card type.

2018-01-14 Thread Flor Lynch
Hi Anna,

If I did (and I doubt it), since all three card types are/were ticked,) how
would I select MasterCard?

-- The choices of Payment mnethod are: Credit/Debit Card (Visa, Amex,
MasterCard, Discover); (This is the radiobutton that is ticked).
-- PayPalk;
-- None.

In the meantime, I just went to PayPal, and it was accepted by iTunes. I
downloaded the app, but it is just a pale shadow of what it used to be. (In
fact, it hadn’t been updated in a long time, and, since iOS11, it won’t play
music, it seems.) (For the curious, it’s called Raven Radio.)

Hi,

Visa credit card numbers begin with 4, Mastercard with 5, and Discover with 6.
My guess is that you selected Visa while your card starts with a 5, or vice
versa.

Best,
Anna

The 16-digit Credit card number, CVV, and Expiry Date, are correct.

So, what does, “Credit card number does not match credit card type” mean?
Does it mean, that I must contact my card provider to proceed anyway? Or, does
it mean something else? Or does it signify something else entirely unrelated?
Or, does it mean that I should simply try PayPal and hope it works? (When I/my
Bank changed from Visa to MasterCard, iTunes/App Store had accepted that in the
past and I made purchases using the latter card type.)

  Any good ideas? Thanks.

2018-01-14 Thread Flor Lynch
No, it does not mean that. The first digits on the card tell a computer or card
network what type the card is. If a card number begins with 54, it’s a
MasterCard. If a card number begins with 45, it’s a Visa. These are known to
the computer, etc. I i know what my card type is, and I know I have the number
typed in correcly. (Incidentally my card doesn’t yet support ApplePay.)

I have an extremely strange problem. When my phone is charging, touch ID is
very inconsistent and often just doesn't work, but when it is unplugged it
works just fine pretty much every time. Has anybody else had this happen?

It is amazing what they put up with on a new product introduction day! I know,
