Re: Okay, I have to Admit It, HomePod Is The Best

The home pod speaker sound incredible, but I don't like the fact that all you
have access to is Apple Music unless you want to airatair drop from your
phoneddI like the Sonos for its diversity and the multiroom capability.
However, this is not a knock on Apple. I have always wanted the Sonos and I
don’t regret my decision. If Apple would open up to offering outside services,
this might be a different story.

But, being an XM subscriber Sonos works for me. I wouldn’t mind though, seeing
a homepod in action at someone’s home.

Mary, I have to admit, until now, I had not tried to read anything in iBooks.
It seems less accessible than it used to be.
I managed to highlight a couple lines, but then what?
Other than using the VoiceOver command to copy the last segment of text spoken,
it seems pretty useless.

What you need to know about unlocked phones vs. locked phones - CNET

2018-02-17 Thread M. Taylor
Unlocked phones vs. locked phones: Why you should care
In this edition of Ask Maggie, CNET's Marguerite Reardon breaks down what
you need to know about the carrier practice of locking phones.
By Marguerite Reardon, February 17, 2018 5:00 AM PST

FAQ

Should you get an unlocked phone?
The US wireless market is more competitive than ever, which is great news
for consumers who have lots of choices when it comes choosing a service
provider.
But one barrier still exists when trying to switch carriers: the locked
smartphone.

The end of wireless contracts marked a watershed trend for consumers because
it finally opened the door for them to more easily shop around for
alternative wireless carriers. But the software locks that carriers put on
phones restricting its use on other networks still prevent many consumers
from having total freedom when it comes to choosing a provider.

Now Verizon, the only wireless carrier that sold its phones unlocked out of
the box, is reversing course. The company said earlier this week it would
begin locking the phones it sells to consumers for an undetermined period of
time, which will prevent them from using a SIM card from another carrier.
But Verizon promised it would eventually unlock the device after activation.
The company hasn't said how long that period would be.

Verizon said it's doing this to deter criminals from stealing phones, which
are often stolen en route to retail stores or from the stores themselves.
Unlocked phones make attractive targets because they can be resold on the
black market or used overseas with different carriers. That's particularly
the case for iPhones, which are a top target for thieves because of their
high resale value.

Because I get so many questions about the difference between locked versus
unlocked phones and what it means to the average wireless customer, I've put
together this FAQ for my Ask Maggie readers to summarize the basics.

What's the difference between a locked and unlocked phone?
The difference is that a locked phone has a software code on it that
prevents you from using it on another network. An unlocked phone either
doesn't have the software lock on it or someone was able to get a code that
unlocks the software. Once a device is unlocked, you can pop out the SIM
card and put in a different SIM and get service.

What's the benefit of having an unlocked phone?
The biggest benefit of having an unlocked phone is that if you want to
switch wireless operators, you can easily do that. All you have to do is pop
in a new SIM and sign up for service. There's no need to buy a new phone.
This is great because it lets you shop around for the cheapest service
instead of being stuck with a particular carrier because you don't want to
buy a new phone.

This flexibility can also come in handy for people traveling overseas. It's
usually less expensive to use a local wireless service while traveling
abroad. And again, you simply pop out the SIM card in your phone and replace
it with one from a local carrier. And voila! You will have a new local
number and it will be cheaper to make calls in country and access the
internet than if you used a US carrier's service that would require roaming
on the foreign network.

Does GSM vs CDMA still matter?
Yes, the voice networks of US wireless carriers still use two fundamentally
different technologies GSM and CDMA. Sprint and Verizon use CDMA, while AT&T
and T-Mobile along with most of the rest of the world use GSM.

The good news is that phones are a bit more compatible and portable among
carriers than they were a few years ago. But phone makers, like Apple, still
tend to make multiple versions of their phones so you need to know which
model you're buying before you can know if you can take it to another
carrier.
For instance, Apple sells two versions of the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus
and X. Unlocked versions of these phones that aren't sold through a carrier
are compatible on all four US carriers. The iPhones sold through Verizon or
Sprint can also be used on both CDMA and GSM networks, which means they are
compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile. But iPhones sold through AT&T and
T-Mobile don't include modems for CDMA, so they can't be used for voice
service on Verizon or Sprint.

The bottom line is that you should check before you buy if you think there's
a chance you'll be switching carriers.

How do I get my phone unlocked?
Depending on how you bought your phone, it may already be unlocked. For
example, if you didn't buy your phone through a US carrier or you purchased
it directly from Apple or on Amazon and either company indicated it was
unlocked, you don't have to do anything.

Prior to the change, Verizon phones came unlocked out of the box.
Phones bought through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon (starting later
this year) will have locks on them. And you'll need to find out what
criteria needs to be satisfied before you can ask for a code to unlock it.

So what are the criteria f

HomePods are staining wooden tables with a white ring By Chaim Gartenberg

Apple's HomePod is a great sounding but ideologically flawed speaker, and it
turns out there's another major problem with the smart speaker aside from its
lack of support for Spotify. Apparently the silicone base of the HomePod can
damage wooden furniture, with multiple outlets (including Wirecutter and Pocket
Lint) reporting that leaving the speaker on top of wooden surfaces can cause a
white ring to form.

Apple has confirmed the issue to Wirecutter, stating that "the marks can
improve over several days after the speaker is removed from the wood surface,"
with the company also recommending that users "try cleaning the surface with
the manufacturer's suggested oiling method" if the white rings don't fade.

Given that HomePods aren't meant to be put on a soft surface (the tweeters fire
down, so putting it on cloth messes with the reflectivity of the sound), it's
not the sort of problem you can solve by just putting down a cloth underneath
it, either.

Congratulations to everyone on their beautiful HomePods and sorry it secretes a
deadly acid that destroys your furniture

pod-vs-echo-vs-google-home-max-vs-sonos-one .

Apple has also updated its official support page for the HomePod, explaining
that "It is not unusual for any speaker with a vibration-dampening silicone
base to leave mild marks when placed on some wooden surfaces." According to the
support page, the marks are apparently caused by "oils diffusing between the
silicone base and the table surface." In addition to the previous stated advice
about hoping the marks go away or cleaning the surface, Apple also said for
customers who are concerned about the issue, "We recommend placing your HomePod
on a different surface."

Update February 14th, 4:00pm: Added additional information about placing the
HomePod on soft surfaces. Updated post to reflect new information from Apple's
official support page for the HomePod.

Yup, we’re having the same problem with our devices in the theater we go to.
They used to work great, but now, when the jacks to the headphones aren’t

about it twice now, so we’ll see if they’ve fixed it the next time we go. I’m
not all that confident myself.
Unfortunately, having only an iPad, I probably won’t be able to use the app,
unless I can get on the Internet over a wi-fi network in, or near, the theater.
Still, it would be nice to know about such an app if it exists.

Subject: An AP For descriptive audio

I am looking for an AP which will allow me to pick up the descriptive signals
when I am in a movie theater featuring descriptive audio.
I have seen a couple but they only sync up the file on the phone to play it
back when you are in the movie theater. I want something that will replace the
receivers that they pass out at the theater, because they don't work most of
the time.
I remember Disney was experimenting with one, but I never heard anything else
about it.

The upgrade screen opens automatically when you attempt to make that fourth
recording thus exceeding the free limit of three. I went ahead and upgraded
paying the $4.99 price.

There does not appear to be any settings.

If you don't keep more than 3 recordings on your device, there is no charge.

Got face id working: RE: How do I set up face id on an iPhone X?

2018-02-17 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi Maria and all.

Thanks for the help. Maria, I didn’t have the iPhone far enough away from me.
I was planning on setting up an appointment at our local Apple Store. The call
led me to someone in Apple Care, and he transferred me to Charity in the Apple
Accessibility center. She linked into my iPhone where she could see my screen.
She had me hold the iPhone at arm’s length and it worked. I’m still getting
used to how this thing works, but I’m getting there. Thanks to all for the
help.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

Kevin,
Do you have the earpiece part of the phone facing you? Try holding the phone
about arms length away from your face and move your head in a slow circle. VO
will tell you whether your head is in view or not.

I just ordered a pair of Sonos Ones directly from Sonos. They gave me $50
off plus free expedited shipping because I was a repeat customer. So the
pair was $349 plus free shipping.

I saw them at Best Buy a few weeks ago for $199, where I bought my son a
Play 3 for $249. I had heard that when the Home Pod went on sale, Sonos was
selling a pair of Play 1's for $349, so you could get a pair of Play 1's for
the same price as a Home Pod. Obviously, you'd want to check around for
prices and sales at various locations.

I promise I won't flood the list with these kinds of posts but I have
to admit that I found myself doing something this evening that I
haven't done in over 10 years. I actually sat in my living room,
with a hardcopy Braille novel and enjoyed listening to my music on my
HomePod, in front of my fireplace. The sound was so pleasant that I
can actually see myself doing this on a regular basis.

During the past 10 years I've purchased over 10 Bluetooth speakers
and none have compelled me to just sit and listen and read. In fact,
I ended up giving all of them away but not this time.

Regardless of the lack of AI skills, the sound alone is definitely
worth the
400+ dollars I paid for the device.

Okay, no more unsolicited testimonials' from me.

My only regret is that I cannot have all of you, my brothers and
sisters, here, so we can experience these beautiful moments,
together.

Sincerely,

Mark

I hope that this is not off topic, but you cannot possibly compare the sound
of the Home Pod with the Sonos Play 1, or the Sonos Play 3.
It's simply not in the same category. Now, the Sonos play 5 speakers for $499
each, if you want true stereo, sound great. but remember, once you move away
from that sweet spot, right in front of the speakers, you lose the balance

I am highly impressed with the Sonos Play 5's, but even more astounded and

FW: Support for iRecorder Pro

2018-02-17 Thread Richard Turner
Greetings,
I wrote the developer of iRecorder about the limits of recording.
Here is their reply, which is very positive and very quick.

Hi Richard, Thanks for asking. The limit is that you can maintain only 3
recordings at any given time. You can delete recordings after sending them to
your computer to keep recording new ones or upgrade to remove the limitation.
The recordings can be any length regardless of upgrading.

I hope this helps,
Amber
End of reply.

HTH,
Richard

Better even than the Sonos speakers? Which a friend of mine, said he paid
$199 for each.
I was pretty impressed with those when I heard them during a visit over the

I promise I won't flood the list with these kinds of posts but I have to admit
that I found myself doing something this evening that I haven't done in over 10
years. I actually sat in my living room, with a hardcopy Braille novel and
enjoyed listening to my music on my HomePod, in front of my fireplace. The
sound was so pleasant that I can actually see myself doing this on a regular
basis.

During the past 10 years I've purchased over 10 Bluetooth speakers and none
have compelled me to just sit and listen and read. In fact, I ended up giving
all of them away but not this time.

Regardless of the lack of AI skills, the sound alone is definitely worth the
400+ dollars I paid for the device.

Okay, no more unsolicited testimonials' from me.

My only regret is that I cannot have all of you, my brothers and sisters, here,
so we can experience these beautiful moments, together.

Sincerely,

Mark

RE: A nice recorder

2018-02-17 Thread Richard Turner
I just wrote the Just Press Record support to ask about changing the two finger
double tap from stopping the recording, to pausing.
Perhaps you could do the same?

That would be a good change so one did not have to find the pause button and
get VO speech into the recording.

By the way, for those with an Apple Watch, Just Press Record has a watch app
I don't have one, but noticed that when reviewing the description in the app
store.

Oh yes “Just Press Record” is awesome! I love the fact that during recordings,
Voiceover as it comes out of the earpiece, is barely noticeable when it talks
upon getting notifications! I do miss and wish “Just Press Record” had some
quick gesture to pause recordings, kind of like (I can’t remember what’s the
recording app called, but it uses a dedicated area onscreen to perform gestures
to record via swipe up I think, pause via Swipe I think left or right, and
Swipe down I think to stop) let’s say we get a call during the middle of a
recording, and we want to quickly pause and then resume. Now the only way to do
it is to put the phone up to our ear, and careful not to be in proximity to our
face of course, and listen for the Pause button.

RE: A nice recorder

2018-02-17 Thread Karen Poulakos
I think it limits you to 3. To be honest I really wasn't paying attention as I
was playing with it. I tested it with 1 recording, then deleted it, then a
couple more, and all of a sudden it wouldn't let me record any more until I
purchased the app.

How many recordings can you make? I'll gladly pay for this app as it
offers many things I've been looking for. I like recup, but that app is
limitted as it only sends to drop box and doesn't keep a copy on your
phone unless you want to go through the drop box app and get it that
way. And irecorder also shows the time and date a recording was made in
case you don't have time to keep track of that.

Re: Okay, I have to Admit It, HomePod Is The Best

2018-02-17 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I saw them at Best Buy a few weeks ago for $199, where I bought my son a
Play 3 for $249. I had heard that when the Home Pod went on sale, Sonos
was selling a pair of Play 1's for $349, so you could get a pair of Play
1's for the same price as a Home Pod. Obviously, you'd want to check
around for prices and sales at various locations.

Ah, yes, this is true, and I apologize for distributing misinformation.
Originally the Google Home did not support your ability to stream to it

The fact that it doesn't support bluetooth streaming is a turn off. I
mean the price was already a turn off to me. There are a few cheaper
options that give me a bit more, the sound might not be as good but I
can at least use those devices with equipment I already own.

Hello Everyone,

I was really considering buying a HOmePod. However, as I am not
subscribed to Apple Music nor am I going to subscribe anytime soon,
I was hoping that the HomePod would have a 3.5mm jack so that I
could use it with non-apple and/or legacy hardware devices such as
my iPod Nanno. What a bummer that it does not have such a port.

Perhaps I'll wait until the next generation model in hopes that they
will permit legacy-device attachments.

Thoughts?

Re: A nice recorder

2018-02-17 Thread Gerardo Corripio
Now the only way to do
it is to put the phone up to our ear, and careful not to be in proximity to our
face of course, and listen for the Pause button.

my brief look at iRecorder would suggest that it is one of the easiest at
the lowest price.
It appears it is free though it mentions in app purchases. Gordon, did
you need to buy any extra features? If so, how much?

A buddy of mine tole me about irecorder. This is a nice app for making
recordings with multiple ways to share a recording including wifi
download which lets you download your recordings if your phone is
connected to the same wifi network as the computer that you're wanting
to use. For example I was able to go to 192.168.1.65:54602 and see a
directory of my recordings with the ability to play from there or
download. It records in m4a and the quality is nice. So I'll use this
one if I want to keep a copy on my phone and recup if I just want to
immediately send it straight to dropbox. I like irecorder because it
will show the date and time that a recording was made. The native voice
memos app only shows the date. You can still send to dropbox and other
places using irecorder.

2018-02-17 Thread Christopher Chaltain
True, but you'll need to be careful what coaster you use. The material
and the contact with the table surface could impact your sound quality.
People should also take this into account if they're going to buy a $350
speaker and place it on their antique table. They may not want to toss a
$10 coaster into their decor.

Apple has confirmed the issue to Wirecutter, stating that "the marks can improve over several
days after the speaker is removed from the wood surface," with the company also recommending
that users "try cleaning the surface with the manufacturer's suggested oiling method" if
the white rings don't fade.

Given that HomePods aren't meant to be put on a soft surface (the tweeters fire
down, so putting it on cloth messes with the reflectivity of the sound), it's
not the sort of problem you can solve by just putting down a cloth underneath
it, either.

Congratulations to everyone on their beautiful HomePods and sorry it secretes a
deadly acid that destroys your furniture

um=social&utm_campaign=social-promo#homepods-flaws-but-not-dealbreakers-home
pod-vs-echo-vs-google-home-max-vs-sonos-one .

Apple has also updated its official support page for the HomePod, explaining that "It is not unusual for
any speaker with a vibration-dampening silicone base to leave mild marks when placed on some wooden
surfaces." According to the support page, the marks are apparently caused by "oils diffusing
between the silicone base and the table surface." In addition to the previous stated advice about hoping
the marks go away or cleaning the surface, Apple also said for customers who are concerned about the issue,
"We recommend placing your HomePod on a different surface."

Update February 14th, 4:00pm: Added additional information about placing the
HomePod on soft surfaces. Updated post to reflect new information from Apple's
official support page for the HomePod.

I promise I won't flood the list with these kinds of posts but I have to
admit that I found myself doing something this evening that I haven't done
in over 10 years. I actually sat in my living room, with a hardcopy
Braille

novel and enjoyed listening to my music on my HomePod, in front of my
fireplace. The sound was so pleasant that I can actually see myself doing
this on a regular basis.

During the past 10 years I've purchased over 10 Bluetooth speakers and
none

have compelled me to just sit and listen and read. In fact, I ended up
giving all of them away but not this time.

Regardless of the lack of AI skills, the sound alone is definitely worth
the

400+ dollars I paid for the device.

Okay, no more unsolicited testimonials' from me.

My only regret is that I cannot have all of you, my brothers and sisters,
here, so we can experience these beautiful moments, together.

Sincerely,

Mark

RE: A nice recorder

2018-02-17 Thread Richard Turner
There are other apps that allow this kind of download, but I have to say, my
brief look at iRecorder would suggest that it is one of the easiest at the
lowest price.
It appears it is free though it mentions in app purchases. Gordon, did you
need to buy any extra features? If so, how much?

The fact that it doesn't support bluetooth streaming is a turn off. I
mean the price was already a turn off to me. There are a few cheaper

can at least use those devices with equipment I already own.

Thoughts?

Re: Okay, I have to Admit It, HomePod Is The Best

2018-02-17 Thread Evan Reese
Better even than the Sonos speakers? Which a friend of mine, said he paid
$199 for each.
I was pretty impressed with those when I heard them during a visit over the
holidays especially considering their size.

Subject: Okay, I have to Admit It, HomePod Is The Best

I promise I won't flood the list with these kinds of posts but I have to
admit that I found myself doing something this evening that I haven't done
in over 10 years. I actually sat in my living room, with a hardcopy Braille
novel and enjoyed listening to my music on my HomePod, in front of my
fireplace. The sound was so pleasant that I can actually see myself doing
this on a regular basis.

During the past 10 years I've purchased over 10 Bluetooth speakers and none
have compelled me to just sit and listen and read. In fact, I ended up
giving all of them away but not this time.

Regardless of the lack of AI skills, the sound alone is definitely worth the
400+ dollars I paid for the device.

Okay, no more unsolicited testimonials' from me.

My only regret is that I cannot have all of you, my brothers and sisters,
here, so we can experience these beautiful moments, together.

Sincerely,

Mark

How do I set up face id on an iPhone X?

2018-02-17 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

Yesterday I got my nice and new iPhone X. So far I'm getting it to work,
except for one important area, and t6hat's with setting up face id. I've tried
moving my head in a small circle, a large circle, and everything else I can
think of to get this thing to work. The last time I tried it, it got past the
first scan, but no farther. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have a blessed day and don't work too hard.
Kevin Minor and the amazing Jilly, Lexington, KY

A nice recorder

2018-02-17 Thread Gordon
